Rave Review; “Minor Mistakes”

August 18th, 2017

One down

How bout that pride of Hobart, the Division-III left tackle turned stud Bucs right guard turned experimental starting center!

Ali Marpet had one heck of a debut last night against the Jaguars.

Marpet had tweaked an ankle and skipped the preseason opener in Cincinnati. So he took his first real snap at center against a talented Jaguars defensive line.

Nearly every fan could see he played well, but after watching the film, Dirk Koetter confirmed today that Marpet did everything asked of him.

“At the point of attack he did a really nice job,” Koetter added. “Minor mistakes, just inexperience things at that position. … Easily fixable.”

Joe was a giant skeptic of the Marpet-to-center move. The Bucs’ mindset was clear and logical, but still, it was a risk. So far, so good.

It looks like Marpet’s next big step, unfortunately, will be playing alongside a different left guard. (See home page for full story on the looming O-line shakeup.)

You were not alone but man he really shined last night. He played very well and even seen him pulling for DJax on the reverse and he was hauling ass. Good ish Marpet!! #NYinTheHouse

Moving from guard to center is no big deal at all – in Madden I just start my guard at center, it’s that easy. Heck I can play my centers at tackle too, works just as well. I’m not sure why Joe thinks this would be a hard move. SMH…

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Some were very excited about the move, even before it was officially announced!!!!!!! Love the strength up the midddle!!!!! We will still see some growing pains, But if we take a couple of lumps early, will really put up dividends later!!!!!!!! GO Bucs!!!!!!!!

Who was excited???????…….. Oh Yea!!!!!!! Its a “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!

The truth of the matter is that this O-line, which was supposed to be a Run-blocking, play-action O-line was in more pure pass protection than they were designed to be in!!!! Having said that, I thought their pass protection was better than what I had them graded as!!! It can take years of development for some players and as long as their is growth I am fine with it!!!!

But I am also fine with talk of moving players to make the best O-line the Bucs have ever had!!!! If getting a LT and moving DS76 to RT and AM74 to center and Jr Sweezy at and KP64/free agent at guard. DD69 as backup Tackle, and KP64/free agent!!!!

Once again, put the best line out on the field for years to come!!!!!

All summer I heard “oh my god the O line will be atrocious next season,Sweez won’t hold up,Jameis starts slow,Jameis is inaccurate on the deep ball”. Stfu and eat it now. Today on the “Herd” the question was “is Jameis WINSton the best young QB in the NFL”??? Need I answer.

The show host said I think many of us are beginning to realize what they’ve already known in Tampa “they have Dude”. I’m like,d@$! right my G.. Better late than never.

  6. DB55 Says:

They played the Jaguars, let’s keep it in perspective.

“They played the Jaguars, let’s keep it in perspective.”

Yeah just Calais Campbell , Malik Jackson ,Donte Fowler and Company. It’s a better line than they practice against every day

  8. DoNUTS Says:

Keep it in perspective…its preseason and most of the 1s are playing at 75% max effort. When Marpet takes on Suh in week 1 then we will really know where he is at.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

You can keep doubting him but my money is on Marpet.

    WTG Ali !!!

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

It wasn’t just that he played well, it’s that he made it look easy. He wasn’t even giving up penetration at all. He was literally driving people back into the LB’s. I wasn’t really worried about him, but this may end up being a brilliant move. I know it’s way too early to make crazy proclamations, but yesterday was a fantastic start.

    Huh?

  14. Walter Says:

I’ll take Marpet against Suh any day of the week.

    McCoy > Suh

  15. SB Says:

I can’t even Convey how stoked I am about Mongo making a seemingly seamless transition to Center. SO FOCKING STOKED for this Season!!!!!

  16. SB Says:

Hey Guys…………..To All of you that don’t live in the Tampa Bay area that would like to play in an ALL BUCS FF League I will start one if I can get 9 other participants.

  17. DoNUTS Says:

For clarity, I am not doubting Marpet at all. His Hobart story is great and I am a fan. I am saying the sample size is too small. I think some of you are ready to crown him All Pro first team. I dont think it makes sense to say he is dominating or bad for that matter based on one preseason game. I think Marpet will succeed but I also know he will have some learning experiences along the way. Playing Suh will be a great test….and yes I agree GMC is an equal test. Jags were a decent test but its one test and its preseason. I expect to see a lot of good and some bad the first 4 weeks of regular season with Marpet as he adapts to the position at regular season game speed.

  18. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Funny people still think suh dominant. Better watch his tape since being paid top dolla. Not the same DT bro.

  19. Easy Denman Says:

I watched Marpet pretty closely last night and he was doing more than holding his own out there.

  23. tnew Says:

The narrative from the front office regarding Marpet was that he was projected at center since day 1. It would’ve most likely happened last season had Sweezy not trashed his back. I love Hawley on the team. Truly do, but watching tape from last season showed he was a big deficiency. The trickle down was pretty significant. Barring injuries, Marpet will be a repeat Pro Bowler. This has been my opinion since I saw him working early at guard. No hand wringing regarding him. My thing is now that he is there, I hope he can stay at Center.

This is NFL, not Maddern. Stop comparing everything you do on a video game to real NFL moves.
