Pray Jameis Stays Healthy

August 11th, 2017

God forbid.

Alas, the Bucs did not meet Joe’s goal Friday night.

Joe doesn’t care about the outcome of a preseason game. The only thing Joe hoped for is that key players on the Bucs made it home without the need of a sling, boot or crutches. That didn’t happen for Ryan Griffin.

The only reason Griffin is not the No. 2 quarterback of the Bucs is he’s never taken a snap in an NFL regular season game. He has had a decent camp, but Friday night he looked all sorts of meh against future bail bondsmen and bouncers of our republic. Then, Griffin hurt his shoulder.

The Bucs ostensibly signed vagabond quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to be the direct backup to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Fitz has done nothing to suggest he is any better than Griffin, other than to run a quality boot in training camp. Tonight, he ran for a touchdown.

Guess the best takeaway there is it’s hard to throw a pick when a quarterback is running the ball.

Speaking of picks, after Griffin went down with a right shoulder injury — his throwing shoulder — Fitz went back in the game and proceeded to throw a pick in the red zone.

Whatever your faith or denomination — wearing out rosary beads, chants, sacrificing chickens, lighting candles, howling at the eclipse while on all fours — Bucs fans must take all measures to appeal to a higher authority for Jameis to remain upright, or this season is screwed.

This is why Mike Glennon was offered $8-mil as a backup – a 2nd QB isn’t easy to find. With that said Fitz looked OK with the true 2nd teamers and was running the ball OK. Later in the game with guys I never heard of he didn’t look good, but who knows if he was the issue of the future UPS driver was running the wrong route. I’m not more concerned than I was before the game.

lets hope #3 has more in common with brett farve than just his gunslinger attitude. hopefully he’s the next iron man qb of the nfl. stay healthy jameis. please!!

  3. Fsuking Says:

I realized tonight that the satellite images from Tampa would change colors if Jameis Winston got hurt. Mostly darkness I would think

  4. Pa Privateer Says:

we have a couple more games to look at Griffin. I am sure there will be an update about his shoulder before the weekend is over

I can accept either as a backup.

  5. Jeffbuc Says:

Yeah maybe we should see what rg3 is doing if we are relying on Ryan to run the ball. I mean he can’t even worse than what I saw tonight. But in his defense he was getting pressured a lot and was making a lot of side armed throws.

  6. Chucklehead Says:

    Joe.
It just doesn’t stop at the QB position. We looked out classed at every position once our starters were off the field. I was thinking we were stacked with talent but this was an eye opener.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    Munch

You obviously missed Glennon’s abysmal performance yesterday. Bucs dodged a bullet that the incompetent bears took the heartless horrendous glennon off the table

Bucs are screwed on the field and emotionally if Jameis goes down

  8. Jeffbuc Says:

But I was impressed with are first team offense. I think I will be taking mike Evans first overall in fantasy. And Doug looked like he was back to his every other year great self. And I hope hard knocks is filming in the o line room when the coach talks up whoever they threw the flag on for illegal man down field and then picked it up and said he was engaged and drove his man down the field. Does anyone know who that was? I didn’t rewind and they didn’t show many replays tonight

  9. Joe Says:

    Fsuking:

    Nice!

  10. Jeffbuc Says:

And joe I think Freddy will be a permanent headliner at the ramda inn. Because him and aguayo are out of here.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Tmax, don’t base your judgements of QBs on preseason games of players on new teams with new offenses on a team with no wide receivers playing the best defense in football…

I agree in that if Jameis goes down for any long period of time the team is finished, and that includes if Glennon was still here. But not every injury is season ending, and if you needed someone to start you 3 or 4 games Glennon would have been a great choice based on backups around the league. Fitz I think is fine in that role and nothing I saw tonight would make me think otherwise. We’ve really seen nothing of Giffin against even a solid #2 defense so we still know nothing about the guy. The coaches obviously know more than me, but I’d rather have Fitz in there playing if we had to have a QB for a game or two, but that’s because I’ve never seen Griffin. I’m fine with whatever the coaches do – but if they loved Giffin they wouldn’t have offered Glennon $8-mil/year, just something to keep in mind.

  12. Canadabucsfan Says:

Jeff I remember them saying kevin Pamphile if I’m not mistaken. Left guard is what the ref said I think also.

  13. Ocala Says:

Yea there is a huge drop from Jamies to the other QB’s but how many drops did Martino have…5?

It was like he was telling Bucs Management to suck it for giving him a chance.

Jamies looks like he is going to have a really big year and yes Joe I have already prayed for his good health.

  14. Buccaneer scotty Says:

It’s the 1st PRESEASON Game people calm down RELAX LMAO

  15. JabooBuc Says:

I actually thought Griffin was better than meh. He put several balls on the money only to see them dropped by your future UPS drivers and lounge singers. Plus, i think it’s tough for a pocket passer to play with scrubs in a preseason game and look great. The protection sucks, the route running sucks and catching sucks. This is why a player like Driskel looks good in the preseason. When the play breaks down, which it does almost every play, they can take off running.

  16. DR FEELGOOD Says:

How can we judge Fitz against second teamers? He did score a TD tonight, didn’t he? While he’s not God’s gift to quarterbacks, he is the perfect backup. A man with over a decade of experience who can get the job done with the starters. Is he an All Pro? NO!! But, if JW3 goes down, I want someone with that level of experience throwing to ME13, OJ80, DJ11, CG12, AH10, and Brate. Are we Bucs fans so shallow that we will scream that Fitzpatrick sucks after tonight? You don’t spend 13 years as a QB in the NFL, out of Harvard, for no reason!! Fitzpatrick is the perfect backup QB in this era of the NFL. Would you trade him for Glennon? If not, then shut up. You people that grab onto panic are hilarious. PRESEASON!! And, again, when he ran I the ONLY TD of the night, were you crying out, ” oh no, we can’t have this guy?!?” Sorry, Joe, but I feel that this is a very irresponsible article.

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

It was Joe Hawley. They announced his number.
Wasnt illegal man downfield- because he maintained contact with the defender

As he drove him 4 yards off the ball, and straight bacwards!!

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

All 3 backups looked decent at times.
Every team is screwed if their starter goes down.
    Except the Patriots( figures)

  19. Fsuking Says:

Great little shout out to JBF late in the broadcast! We have our differences but there’s a reason I login 2-3 times a day

  20. Atlbuc28 Says:

Fitz could win the super bowl with the first team offense!… I’m a huge Jaboo fan.. But damn.. Fitz is way better of an athlete .. and way more accurate !

  21. Atlbuc28 Says:

Hoping Griffin will be good for next year… hate that anyone gets hurt.. But just like the kicking issue…. tonight spoke volumes… I’m good with Fitz and Folk to start the year… feel free to flame..

  22. BigHogHaynes Says:

Call Colin …..do it..do it now!!!

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I thought Sifo Liufau looked better than either of them. Certainly, he did not earn the backup spot, but he should at least get more reps and be added to the competition.

He had a perfect game. 4 for 4 and then the spike (which counts as his only incompletion unfortunately).

He was playing against the worst of the Bengals, but he made do with the cards he was dealt. I say have him replace Griffin in the competition and give him some first and second string reps, then have him compete in the next game with some better talent. If he keeps looking good, move him up in the competition.

Because he certainly outclassed Griffin and Fitz.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    BigHogHaynes Says
“Call Colin …..do it..do it now!!!”

First…no. I might boycott support of the team if they did that.

Second…he has been offered backup jobs and refused them…from superbowl contending teams….which is proof that he is still self-destructing.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    DR FEELGOOD Says
“…if JW3 goes down, I want someone with that level of experience…”

    Josh McCown had experience too.

When it comes to a backup, I don’t care about experience. It’s overrated. Did Jameis have NFL experience in his rookie year? Nope.

If we only have two QBs, I would rather the backup be someone young who potentially higher ceiling.

If (knock on wood) Jameis goes down and is out for a season, there is a chance a young guy can learn on the fly and do well…maybe even do great, giving us true trade value.

    Fitz is horrible.

We need a backup that can win some games. If we have Fitz, it will feel like Agauyo is going out on the field every down.

  26. K_bassuka Says:

I said it then and will say it again Fitzpatrick it’s not any good, and shouldn’t be in any NFL roster. The team needs to start looking for a back up QB fast.
Heck I’m all in for bringing sideshow Bob instead of our current non-options.

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

So quick…name the backup for the Green Bay Packers.

Watched their game the other night and they’re all depending on Brett Hundley.

The majority of NFL teams would be hosed if they lose their starting QB but’s really magnified for those teams fortunate enough to have a “franchise” QB.

Many teams simply do not have a franchise QB…remember Fitz was a starter in New York…the Bears…who backs up Stafford with the Lions.

The main reason we need #3 to stay healthy is not because of poor play behind him…it’s because #3 is a generational talent who has the bar set waaay to high for any backup QB to really get close.

Yeah we can hold our breath but realize it’s a great problem…we have a QB so gifted that we can’t replace him. If you think about it that’s good…we have not had this problem before!!!

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

Its just preseason? Yep..we’ll be sayin that all the way thru preseason. And then comes the regular season. Will we be sayin…its just games 1,2,3 or, 4. No worries. Just..4 losses. Don’t eat this hype people. We will all know what we truly have come game 1 of the regualr season. And we’d better pray jameis and the offense stays healthy. Cause I’m not all stick carrying about our pass rush..yet!!

A better athlete than Winston?! More accurate?! Check the stats bud! Unfortunately these are the types of comments you get when they’re posted at 4 in the morning. Ridiculous!

  30. Cobraboy Says:

Any news of the extent of Griffin’s injury?

  31. Trubucfan22 Says:

Fitzpatrick had 1 bad season. The year before, he did very good. Led the Jets to a respectable record and put some good stats. Im no Jets fans so i don’t know why the wheels feel off last season. But considering the Jets completely imploded their team this off season, i wouldnt put it all on fitz.

Veteran back up QB is exactly what you want to back up winston. Fitz is a genius in the classroom and has a ton of starts under his belt. He has been coached up by numerous OCs and has a great understand of what his job is. Ryan Griffin might be more talented that Fitz, he might even have a higher ceiling. But for what the bucs need behind winston. Fitz is perfect. He can help mentor jameis in the classroom and he can manage a game if called into action. He won’t freak out or have a huge weight on his shoulders. He’s done it a thousand times before. Winston can’t go to Griffin for advice. Griffin knows far less than winston does about the QB position. He is literally no help to Jameis. Like McCoy said in his interview. “If we lose three…. errhhhh” griffin wont be our savior. Neither will fitz. We are screwed eitherway. But since fitz cN help winston get better. That is our guy.
