McCoy: Koetter Ordered Absolute Reality

August 4th, 2017

No-phony rule

Interesting take from big No. 93 after practice today.

Gerald McCoy hopped into a radio interview and shared that winning head coach Dirk Koetter sat players down and ordered them to be completely real before the Hard Knocks cameras.

Not one shred of phoniness allowed, McCoy said of Koetter’s demand.

“We’ve agreed as a team, you know, Coach Koetter told us we have to agree as a team in the team meeting room. ‘Nobody’s going to be fake. Everybody just be yourselves and let the world see who you really are.’ McCoy said on WDAE-AM 620. “And that’s all we’ve been. We’re having a good time with it. Guys like to compete, get in certain conversations on camera. Gettin’ the competition in the locker room on camera. … You’ll get to see a lot of personalities you didn’t know guys had. So I think this Hard Knocks is going to be a good one.”

McCoy added that Hard Knocks has been no intrusion: “Very polite. They’re not pushy; they’re just here. You just go about your everyday business as normal and they just capture the real.”

Wise move by Koetter. Firmly demanding guys be themselves is a great way to avoid drama and controversy — assuming the team culture was healthy to begin with — and to keep Hard Knocks from becoming a distraction.

Now a team with problems and issues, well, they might want to change behavior.

Do it Pawel do it. N ole Dirk seems to get the big picture. No idea how it took him this long to get a hc job. This team is turning the corner finally. Go Bucs

FYI- not sure how many of you are aware but there is cursing allowed on hbo. Just a heads up. Oh and no commercials. Wow, right pretty crazy I know.

  5. Papa578 Says:

Great stuff. Love the culture change at 1 Buc..

I can’t even begin to imagine how this whole Bucs Hard Knocks thing would have played out if Lovie were still the coach here.

I honestly can’t even lay out how bad it would have affected the 2017 season or how this team would have shown on TV before the cameras. Spit balls and paper airplanes in the film room, while Jameis is trying to study in the corner… the horror, the horror

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

So now does this mean we’ll getting to Mr Softie aka GMC whine, cry, and complain and then get hurt before the 1st season game and then duck reporters and media because he doesn’t feel like talking????????

    hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm…………..????????

  8. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

We know the team culture is healthy right now, right? We’re past the assumption phase at this point, because we know who the leaders are, right?

  9. Vern@4499 Says:

    TheBucsAnthem,

    What are you talking about?

Not sure why negative people even come on here. Real fans aren’t always negative especially the year that they should be me positive than any hear in the last 15.

  10. '74 Bucs Fan Says:

One of the Hard Knocks guys was at Target last night buying food for the crew. Nice kid. Had my Bucs shirt on and we talked for a bit.

Go Bucs! And Anthem – please go sit in the corner.

  11. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

No phoniness you say? Guess Ian Beckles (according to his latest pod) will have to go back and look for a new way to dis #93 then. Not like he ever stops though. He honestly can’t sit behind a mic & talk Bucs without dissing on GMC.
He must be tmax & co’s hero.

  12. Pickgrin Says:

    Real recognizes Real

  13. Buc 4ever Says:

Come on Gerald. I guess that’s why you came to camp dressed like Kung Fu Panda. And now ur hopping around the practice field dancing like never before. Just be part of the team instead of wanting all eyes on you, then when ur criticized you complain about not being appreciated

That’s a GREAT question. When you look at DK’s resume it’s pretty amazing it took so long.

My best guess is that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. DK is not a loudmouth.
And sometimes life simply is not fair. Some deserving people get passed over because the timing wasn’t right….a more famous HC was available..can you say Lovie?

And recall when DK got the job there were still people here who claimed the Glazers didn’t have to hire because other teams were interested…that the “interviews” with other teams weren’t serious. That DK got the job because of his connection with #3.

It is pretty amazing when you look back at it.
