“I Just Gotta Start, You Know, Acting Like A Vet”

Hard words

Doug Martin found some face time on Hard Knocks last night.

Legions of Bucs fans were probably at the edge of their seats waiting to hear behind-the-scenes confirmation that the Bucs can’t wait to hand Martin the rock in Week 4 when his drug suspension ends.

But that never came. Even the hidden cameras and microphones, apparently, didn’t catch any important Bucs official revealing that Martin is the go-to guy for the Bucs’ running game when he returns.

Not a peep about Martin’s performance.

That written, Hard Knocks aired a piece of its 1-on-1 interview with Martin. And Joe thought one of Martin’s quotes was surprising, “I just gotta start, you know, acting like a vet.” It was part of Martin talking about getting older and being around a lot of young players.

But Joe thought it was an odd choice of words. And it was a bit odd because others at One Buc Palace often talk, and have for years, that Martin sets the standard for Bucs running backs and works super hard.

So why does he think he needs to start acting like a vet? Odd.

Well, remember the staff has editing rights before it airs. I’m sure any 22 talk got canned if it was caught.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Joe were you drinking tonight, you seem confused about a lot of what was on Hard Knocks tonight? Like I get it, I take a hand full of xanax and try to do anything I’m completely baffled, so no big deal, but I wasn’t really having the same issues as you tonight on what was confusing and what wasn’t. Anywho I know you’re going to stay at the front of the run Martin out of town train until the train comes off the rails in week 4 and he’s the starting RB, but just watch the games, who is in there, who looks good and who doesn’t – it’s pretty obvious Martin is the starter. Sorry you’re wrong, but hey you got Roberto getting cut so you can hang your hat on that.
    LOL. So ridiculous.–Joe

  3. Lamarcus Says:

I love that stare down by Martin and the first thing I thought of was all his haters.

Damn no need to say he is staying right now. Remember the carrot?

  4. Lamarcus Says:

BTW I don’t think Martin found facetime. Facetime found him.

  5. tnew Says:

Where’s that straw? I just can’t quite reach it.

  6. Pick6 Says:

Sooo…the Bucs refuse to do something you have repeatedly criticized them for doing in the past (anointing a starter when declaring a competition is in their best interests), and that is your evidence that our best RB in the preseason has a “10% chance” of making the roster? Can we just put this in the “bad JBF takes” pile next to Johny Football and move on?

  7. Alaskabuc Says:

Anyone one else notice it was D-Jax, Jameis and McWeapon going over plays together in the hotel room and not Doug? Week one starter?

  8. Pick6 Says:

@alaskabuc, I wouldn’t read too much into lineup decisions from that study session. McNichols is the only RB new to the playbook and QB, and DJack has some work to do to catch up to the chemistry JW has with Evans/BRate/Hump who are all 32 games in with this QB and this Playcaller

Nobody is yet certain if Martins stays or Martin goes. I saw the interview with DK at his desk and HE said it was up in the air.

This place is going to be very interesting if Doug is not on the roster this year!

There are a lot of people who are CERTAIN he’s on the team week 4. If he’s not….

Personally I’m not sure. Time will tell. He certainly came across as a nice guy and HK did everything they could to present him in a positive light…saying how beloved he is and his joy for life. Impossible not to like that. I’m still not blown away by his skill set. He is a very good…when he’s at his best…running back…he runs hard…but he NEEDS blocks…he’s too slow to create.

  10. Maze Says:

You have to be borderline dumb to think Martin won’t be on this roster week 4. Football is confusing I get it

  11. Cobraboy Says:

No matter how many times the coach & GM say “no need to make any decisions right now, don’t read anything into it, some guys need a carrot” some with an agenda WILL think decisions have been made, WILL read into it, will parse every word and facial twitch, and deny the carrot theory.

Seems that whether it’s Johnny Football, Dalvin Cook or Doug Martin, every season has a new obsession on JBF…

  12. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Maze

Does that mean if he’s NOT on the team you were borderline dumb?

  13. Stud Says:

T.J. Rives called anyone thinking Doug Martin won’t be on this roster “clueless”

If you look at the way this roster has been shaped by not adding a real threat to take Doug’s spot (Please don’t be foolish enough to think a 5th round rookie or a player like Rodgers is gonna take Doug’s spot) I have to agree with T.J. Rives and not with the Joes, Ira or Big Dog. Doug Martin is on this roster and will likely be the leading rusher in 2017.

  14. Lamarcus Says:

    Stud

I heard that too. I’m going tj on this. Joes have a personal opinion on it would mean it’s true. Kinda weird they are insiders and not know this

  15. Maze Says:

    Yes St.Pete I would be

  16. RachelWatson'sThong Says:

Couple things on Doug, he sure ain’t a skateboarder. He looks stiff and unsure on that Boosted board. That thing will do like 20-25mph if I’m not mistaken and has a range of 6-7 miles I think. The board looked brand new too. He better be careful.
When he said like “Im the Silver surfer” I new he saw Jesse Wellens Silver Surfer Boosted board vid on You Tube. Very cool. Watch it and see what a real skateboarder rides like. anyways.
Last thing, why doesn’t the Muscle Hamster look, you know, Muscley?! He’s looking less Hammerish in the guns dept this year.
I do hope for his success on his return tho. How long before the 813 is getting a shout out from Snoop!?

  17. RachelWatson'sThong Says:

last thing, who can’t run if your O-line is loaded with studs!?

  18. Roy T. Buford Says:

Martin has earned the starting job…again. His suspension is what it is but you don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. And NO ONE at Bucs is going to say privately or not, that he has the starting job because the others have to be motivated, some of them to even make the roster. Whether Martin has done well or not, they’d not say. So many media types out there looking for scoops and trying to read things that aren’t there, and they sure don’t know business. Any of the Bucs executives are smarter about what their intent is, how to get what they need, than any media dude. Period. Seen some really dumb assertions made.

  19. The Anomaly Says:

Doug cannot be trusted. He has more bad seasons than good ones. He let everyone down and frankly that’s enough for me. Add in that he sucks out loud every other year. Not worth it.

    Move on.

  20. unbelievable Says:

Well his teammates sure don’t act like he let them down. They all seem to be pulling for him. Thought it was interesting that HBO gave him a lot of face time last night considering his uncertain status. Maybe that means his status is more solid that some on this site would like to admit…

I think the whole “acting like a vet” was more about the changes he made- going to rehab, stop partying and and indulging in the nightlife, etc. Which is exactly what you’d want from a guy in his situation.

Either way, he looked like the best RB during that game, no one else came close. Barber had a few nice runs but that was against 2s and 3s…

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Seems to me that all indications lean towards DM being a Buccaneer this year.

Not sure how anyone could be reading it much differently.

The Joe’s sure seem all in on the idea (paraphrased) “We don’t think Martin will be here this year” – which just strikes me as odd since no other Bucs news insiders have the same opinion and most visible indicators are pointing to the opposite conclusion. Very Odd.
