“Silent Count” At Home

Rock bottom in Tampa

Perhaps Joe’s “Den of Depression” nickname is obsolete now that Tampa Bay is riding a four-game home winning streak. Maybe.

However, it was 110 percent appropriate at one time, and Dirk Koetter candidly illustrated that while joining today’s episode of the Ira Kaufman Podcast today.

During a discussion of fan impact and the need to recreate the tremendous energy and atmosphere during the Bucs’ home pasting of Seattle last year, Koetter explained that the Tampa Bay offense was forced to go to a “silent count” at home in 2015.

Joe’s jaw nearly hit the floor. That’s just rock bottom, and embarrassing. Joe can only imagine what was running through the head of rookie America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

“The first year I was here, and we played a couple of those teams, from the northeast, the traditional teams that travel well, I mean, we had to go to silent count in our own home stadium, and that’s just not right,” Koetter said.

… …”The organization, the fans and the team has to play better, ok. Any time I start talking too much about my role with the fans, they’re going slap me right back down to earth. And there’s always going to be a bunch of people on JoeBucsFan telling, ‘Hey, Dirk, worry about coaching the team.’ And I get that; that’s my ultimate job. But I’m always looking to give us every advantage we can get because it’s all about winning. I’m worrying about motivating my team, but I want the fans’ help. Because we need the home field advantage.”

You can hear the full audio via the link above. It’s worth your time.

Great, telling, heartfelt stuff from Koetter.

this falls on the glazer clowns 100% Put a solid competitive team on the filed week in and week out and the fans will come. Paying down the united manchester debt and trying to relive a failed past with Lovie were HUGE factors in the circus that has been bucland for nearly a decade but the root of the problem has been the horrendous drafting for a better part of 20 years.

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

4-4 last year, we have moved up to “den of manic depression.”

  3. Howard Cosell Says:

Bear and Packer fans LOVE to come here in the fall and winter for the weather. Can’t blame them.
That said we need to find a way to keep them out.
The problem is they pay big big bucks to come here and for tickets.

  4. celly Says:

Whether the other teams fans are here or not, if we start pasting the visiting team and putting up some points early, their fans will quiet down.

We’ve all seen it time and time again.

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Koetter speaks truth, we just don’t have the home field advantage other teams have.
Many potential fans who live here, come out to root against the Bucs, and support their old home team.
I have lived in Seattle, Oakland, and Detroit, and you will never find their stadiums Full of Fans from the other teams, as you do here in Tampa.
To make matters even worse, fans here in Tampa seem to cling to that stupid cheering, where one side of the stadium chants “Tampa”, and then the other side shouts”Bay”.
Opposing teams love this stupid cheer, because it quiets one side of the stadium down completely.

  6. Kalind Says:

Hate to criticize, Joe. But man, the ads between every single article these days is getting to the point of annoying. I just want to click through between them all. Instead I have to load at least 1 utterly useless and worthless page. (I’m in DC the local ads are irrelevant to me. But my larger point is, one “article” ad a day..I guess I can live with. But come on man… It’s gotten out of control now
That’s ludicrous. But Joe is glad you are seeing these well positioned advertisements that help JoeBucsFan work tirelessly to deliver Bucs coverage 24/7. Joe is proud to deliver for these great sponsors and supporters.–Joe

  7. Kalind Says:

The rest of the site and what you do is great…don’t get me wrong. But you gotta fix it man, or I’m gunna have to stop checkin in as often.
Yes, it is difficult to do one more finger swipe or mouse scroll past an ad you aren’t interested in. C’mon. Give Joe a break. If that sends you packing, then, well, enjoy your options.–Joe

  8. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Howard Cosell

“Bear and Packer fans LOVE to come here in the fall and winter for the weather. Can’t blame them.”

No you can’t Howard but it frequently gives us the last laugh regardless of what happens on the field. They fly in for a long getaway weekend Thursday….rent a convertible…lie on the beach and burn their fair northern flesh!!!!

  9. Defense Rules Says:

@Chris … “we just don’t have the home field advantage other teams have.” Admittedly Tampa is probably more of a ‘melting pot’ than most NFL cities (folks come to live here from all over the US), and that leads to some holding on to old allegiances. Plus we get lots of visitors from all over. That’s great, but those are still just excuses for not having an ongoing home field advantage. Bucs lost a large number of seat-buying fans over the last 10-15 years, mostly because many (OK, most) were losing years. As ‘Field of Dreams’ said … “If you build it, they will come.” IT in this case is a winning team. And that’s exactly what our Bucs are building.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

Joe until our fans (loud ones) show up, this will continue. Sadly I’ve been to a game that he was talking about and it was the lowly Jags. The Jags fans were louder than the Bucs fans. In OUR stadium. Tell it like it is Joe. You’ve been to more games than me. You’ve heard opposing teams fans when our O’s out on the field. Tell it like it is. I know they’ve sucked, but really?

Keep the name Joe until that stadium turns red again!!!

  11. LakeLandBuc Says:

This team has STUNK for 41 seasons, why should the fans pay hard earned money to watch trash on a football field?

  12. Buc1987 Says:

LakeLandBuc…correct. Those “fans” should just stay home imo. Hell especially for this 7-9 of a trainwreck coming.

What this team needs more of is players and coaches from Lakeland. 🙂

  13. LakeLandBuc Says:

Buc1987….After Coach Bill Castle 40th season at Lakeland High, his record was 400-86. With 6 State Titles and 2 National Championships, that’s a whole, whole, whole lot better than the Bucs record after 40 seasons.

  14. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

So who were those people in SanDiego??? Now they were raukus.

  15. Alaskan abdominal snowman Says:

I remember in a few occasions I would stand up and cheer on the defense and “buc fans” would literally ask me to sit down because their soft a$$es couldn’t see. That’s when I would prompt them to stand the f#@! Up and cheer then. Football games is not the opera, we need fans that are gonna be loud and passionate and bring the energy.

  16. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

San Fran suck many year prior to Bill Walsh,Pittsburgh suck many years prior to Chuck Knoll,Buffalo suck many years prior to Marv Levy. Get my drift or should I continue.

  17. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Now I’m not much of a researcher fakeland but I’m willing to wager Koetter had a better first time HCing record than any of those aforementioned.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

that packers game was horrible….they were chatting go pack go so loud it was embarrassing….and after the game they were even louder….I hope we can return the favor 12/03….

with that being said, the stadium was rocking last year….the crowd was loud and the players were flying around….I remember during the seahawks game, the camera showed the seahawks bench during a tv break….they showed Sherman looking around as if he was lost and confused…he was looking around like,”where are we and who are these rabbit fans”….

i’ll never forget that look on his face…..more importantly the way I felt during that victory….GO BUCS!!!!!

  19. Doctor Stroud Says:

Opposing fans come to RayJay; Miko Grimes goes to the stadiums of opposing teams. Is that an even trade off?

  20. 813bucboi Says:

@Alaskan….I hear you loud and clear…I got offended when I stood up yelling while we were on “d” and people were looking at me like I was crazy….a few asked me to sit down and threatened to tell the usher….I said damn, has it gotten that bad….why the hell are you hear….I cursed their a$$ out….I quickly sit down tho because me and bro were too drunk to drive home had we gotten thrown out lol….that aint happening this year tho….if you aint excited about this team then stay home and watch the game peacefully….GO BUCS!!!!

  21. The Buc Realist Says:

When lazy lovie was the head coach, some of our own fans were yelling and chanting for the other team as well!!!!!!!!

  22. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe
Maybe the “Fans” “Tanked” the season so we could get a real NFL Head Coach!!!!!!!!!

    Go BUCS!!!!!!!!!

  23. jerseybuc Says:

This will only get worse this year. At least half the home games will be chock full of visiting fans. Chicago, NE and the Giant fans will travel, and they will buy tickets off of Buc fans as they always do and they will be out in force. Only good thing is the Jets are so bad this year they may not make the trip.

  24. Dlavid Says:

Kalind ……! How do you think the bills get paid man ? Good night ! Free Buc postings and top notch at that , get a life . Keep up the great work Joe’s and Ira !!!!!

  25. BucEmUp Says:

    @Buc1987

If this team goes 9-7 I guarantee its at the fault of the defense, not koetters playcalling, Jameis or a lack of weapons. I believe we have really good guys on defense but I have stated from day one I have little faith in Mike Smith. Hopefully he proves me dead wrong but thats the ONLY way I see a 7-9 finish.

  26. BucEmUp Says:

I do think the Bucs fans attendance will be MUCH better….the best it has been since Gruden left. Fans are starting to believe again. 2018 will be a packed madhouse full of red and pewter if this season is a success

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Have to defend Joe on the advertising front…….Joe doesn’t force obtrusive ads on readers making them watch to see videos or read articles….even the podcast ads are done by Joe & Ira….not the client….making them easier on the ear.
Bucs.com forces you to watch an ad like Youtube on every video…..
Realizing that changes may be forced on the Joes in the future…..we should thank and enjoy the ad freedom while we have it.

  28. BuccaneerByBirth Says:

Coach, you have to understand a few pieces of context. First) Bucs were coming off an 0-8 home season in 2014. 2nd, Thats just how Tampa has always been. Rays, Lightning, Bucs- at many points the visiting crowds outnumber TB fans. Whether by traveling fans (Packers, Bears, Giants, Maple Leafs) popular names (Yankees, Sox, Cowboys, etc) or the home team just being bad! And do not forget, when you said that you had been beat at home by the Rams, Broncos, and about to lose a heartbreaker to Oakland before being trounced by Atlanta.

BUT, as you saw against Seattle, you have a loyal fanbase who WANTS to love you and is waiting for the product to improve.

  29. shouldhavedraftedeifert Says:

@Kalind The Joe’s are a fun train wreck to watch.

Gronkowski is the next Buc great QB, oh wait manizel MANIZEL, or maybe Teddy? It’s Teddy! No Manizel! Damn couldn’t draft him.. Jameis yes it’s Jameis now! He’s the answer, we said all along!

    hehe so fun.

  30. Alaskan abdominal snowman Says:

BucEmUp I don’t know how Mike Smith hasn’t proved himself to you already . He’s proved himself to the organization enough to get an extension after just one season. I would argue that with the talent on board the defense overachiever last year.

  31. RayJameisStadium Says:

I’m glad you are not feeling depress Joe!

Neither am I. That chapter is water under the bridge after 4 – 4 in 2016.

    Expect different!

    Go Bucs!!!

  32. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

I’m going to the game at Lambeau this year. Let’s hope I don’t get jumped by Packer fans, CUZ IM GETTIN LOUD

  33. broy34 Says:

aaaaand maxi pad wastes no time ripping the team to shreds…stopped after the first sentence—cant wait to read his bashing of McCoy…joe let the floodgates open with this one

  34. Pickgrin Says:

I see Derek Carr reset the QB market value today with a 5 year $125M contract extension. $70M guaranteed.

$25M per year – That’s just a slight raise from the $977k he was due to earn in 2017 – the last year of his rookie contract.

Winston’s 2nd contract in a year or two is gonna be expensive – especially if he plays as well as we all hope he will.

  35. Zwak Says:

Put some shade over us its hot as F^#* at Ray Jay!!

  36. 813bucboi Says:

    @pickgrin….Winston will get 5 years $185M with $100M guaranteed…GO BUCS!!!

  37. 813bucboi Says:

    @zwak…LOLOLOL….damn right…..GO BUCS!!!!

  38. Tattoodonny Says:

While, I agree that up until recently it could be placed on the Glazers for not putting a winning team on the field. But now it’s on the fans that sell their tixs to people that aren’t pulling for the Bucs. Also, I understand this state is a “catch-all” state, meaning who wants to move to Green Bay, Chicago, or cold weather cities and states where the taxes are so much higher then here. People need to keep thier memories, but learn to become fans of the teams here in Tampa! Until we become a NE type of team (ever year we are winning or at least going to the playoffs) we’re always going to have to put up with the other teams fans iinfiltrating our beloved Raymond James Stadium. Plus, with so many people working at lower paying jobs, buying tickets at $70 plus and being able to sell it to someone for $200, it’s hard to pass on that, especially now that all games are on TV. I hate our fans selling their tickets, but completely understand bc I’ve done it (being a disabled vet living on a fixed income) making 2 or 3 times face value is hard to pass on. I just hope this season we (the real true Buc fan) fill that place up and drown out any other teams voice. It will be hard with the teams from the AFC East (Jet fans, which I’ll never understand, NE fans, both true and fake bc they win so much) but hopefully we’ll out number them and out scream them, to help our guys make this team a winning team at home! NO MORE SILENT COUNTS AT HOME BUC FANS, LETS HELP JAMEIS PUT UP MUCH MORE THEN OPPOSING QB’s CAN. GO BUC’S…

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Winston contract…..10 years….1 Billion……but, he will have to serve as RB and throw to himself…..perhaps play ST & a position on D.

  40. Kalind Says:

Hey Joe, I was just makin a suggestion for ease. It was no big deal just an annoyance. But I DO see them most definetly. I love your site. Just making a suggestion to make it a little more user friendly. Take or leave no hard feelings. Your site is my most visited site, just thinking maybe a couple less times a day lol. Thanks for all you do for us though.
