Fourth-Best QB In NFC South

June 17th, 2017

Breaking through.

Yes, the Bucs are the it-team for Bucs fans’ it-girl Kay Adams.

The NFL Network co-host of “Good Morning, Football” leaves no doubt which team is her NFL crush for 2017, and it is the Bucs.

This week, her show crew decided to break down if the Bucs can live up to the hype.

In short, co-host Kyle Brandt believes it is Jameis must live up to the hype. Brandt noted that the NFC South is loaded with quarterbacks and with two former MVP’s (Cam Newton and Matty Ice) and a future Hall of Famer (Drew Brees).

In Brandt’s mind, Jameis must take the next step in his development.

“As good as Jameis has looked, he is fourth out of four in that division,” Brandt said. “He is. You cannot put him ahead of any of those other three guys.”

Brandt has a point. But the point is based on a resumé more it seems than the now. Yeah, Newton was an MVP two years ago. Guess what? Darrelle Revis, Adrian Peterson and Doug Martin were Pro Bowl players two years ago, too. We’re talking 2017 folks, not 2015.

There is nothing to suggest to Joe that Jameis isn’t as good as Newton and can’t be even better than Newton.

  1. Brett Says:

Have to agree with Brandt, though I wouldn’t consider trading jameis for Brees or cam Newton. I’d think about Matty Ice, but probably wouldn’t. But until Jmeis takes the next step, you can’t say he will. By the end of Favre’s career you knoew he was going to lose you some games. Right now, you have to wait to see if jameis can keep the ball safer or he is going to look like that, also… and at age 23 it will be for a very long time.

  2. c-spann Says:

I think JW at least better then Cam. He did throw some ugly picks, some of which bounced off the WR hands. I think the difference the off has more weapons and the def at least knows how to get stops more consistently. I think that alone will make JW look better.

  3. LakeLandBuc Says:

I have been saying this for 2 years. Jameis is a good QB, but he’s the 4th best Qb in the NFC South. He threw for 4,000 yards during his first 2 seasons in the NFL. But Drew Brees has thrown for 4,000 in 11 straight seasons. And Matt Ryan has done it for 6 straight seasons. And Cam Newton is the best Dual-Threat QB in the NFL, and I expect for him to be healthy this season. We have spent so much time getting ” weapons for Jameis”. But we have neglected getting weapons to stop these 3 QBs.

  4. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I completely disagree.

I didn’t see any of those other guys throw for 8,000+ yards in their first two seasons.

  5. LakeLandBuc Says:

I never said they threw for 8,000 yards during their first 2 seasons. I’m speaking of what they are doing in the present. Right now these guys are ahead of Jameis, you can’t argue against this.

  6. LakeLandBuc Says:

I’m a Bucs fan, but i’m also a realistic fan.

  7. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I only put Brees and Ryan ahead because of years in and acomplishments. Clark kent forget it,still worse in the league yards 20 or more down field. And”you people” complain about Fameis’s deep ball. Please. The south will soon have one Undisputed King. He makes his bones here in the Bay.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Team sport and Jameis will lead his team to greatness.

    That is all.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He may be fourth…..but not many Buc fans would trade for any of them……he also happens to be the youngest…..and cheapest.

  10. Tnew Says:

He may be 4th, but allow me two points:

One can make an argument that he’s in the discussion for the best as well, after two seasons, with the receiving “threats” he had last season is pretty remarkable.

Which Qb in the division, today, do you trade him for?

4th best probably, check back a year from now.

  11. Tnew Says:

Honestly, I’m going to disagree with that assessment. Ranking Newton in front of Winston is only if you are a fantasy footballer living in the past. He may never, ever come back from the Super Bowl. He hasn’t shown that he can yet. Age will not be kind to Cam. When it happens, it will be fast and cruel.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

    3rd

  13. Not There yet Says:

There is no way to spin this one. Obviously this goes by what you’ve done like say player contracts. Each one of these quarterback had done multiple things Winston has not done like winning a Superbowl, the other two won league mvp, all have playoff victories. How could you suggest at this point he is above any of them. I’m hoping my answer changes by the end of the upcoming season though, can’t think of many quarterbacks considered elite when they haven’t won anything or had an elite offense or team

  14. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

What Tnew said. Check back on this a year from now. They’ve all had an amory to pick from. Fameis just got his. Gunz will now be ablaze in Tampa Bay.

  15. Francisco Menendez Says:

Jameis Winston is the 4th best qb in our division. That’s not even a question. And you know what? He’s still really great, and I’d still rather have his upside and potential over any of the other guys. All you in denial of this, those of you who think he’s better than the other qbs are outright homers, and need to remember all the over throws this guy had last year. He’s a work in progress right now, but I’m happy to wait for more improvement.

  16. LakeLandBuc Says:

Cam Newton first 2 seasons in the NFL, 9,367 total yards, 62 TDS. Cam 6 year stats, 25,338 total yards, 184 TDs. Cam has set records also, he set records for total yards by a QB, during their first 2 seasons. I don’t get all the Cam hate, he’s a unique QB.

  17. R.O. Says:

Who cares… Thats like voting on which f@rt smells the best.

  18. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Why the hate you ask??? Cause he front runs more on the Bucs than any other team in the league. Yea I know bee clowns like that on everyone but I pay close attention seem like the guy has taken special pleasure in doing that against the Bucs. Screw him and anybody that can’t see where I’m coming from. Screw matty and drew for that matter as well.

  19. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I didn’t particularly feel bad for him taking all that punishment last season. You show up your opponents you eventually have your @$$ handed to you.

  20. bucnut2 Says:

I think this is accurate based on last year. Let’s see if JW can change the ranking!

  21. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

Brandt is right, it all comes back to Jameis, just like it did for all the other teams in our division with their respective QB’s. Good news is, he’s already in the history books for his achievements through his first 2 YEARS. Take that into account and he should be primed and poised to take that “next step,” especially w/ the receiver talent around him.
@LakelLand Buc, you are right on point with how we haven’t gone out of our on the defensive side of the ball to aquire weapons like we have on the offensive side. But I’ve said this for months now whenever the topic matter was applicable. Mike Smith is an off-shoot of the Buddy Ryan coaching tree system. That attacking style system is geared to maximize players talents and instill confusion/fear in opposing QB’s. The “Joes” a few weeks back, or atleast one of them, were scoffing at the notion of putting Gerald Mc Coy at DE in a 3-4 front. That’s not what he’s being paid for they said. I’ve countered in writing w/ the fact that most coaches who employ a 3-4, prefer to have their LB’s be the athletes and their linemen be the stiff & still pillar line/gap holders. Pointed out that HOF’ers Bruce Smith & our very own Lee Roy terrorized opposing QB’s from their DE spots in what kind of scheme…a 3-4. Why were they able to do that? Because they were superior athletes. Now just here recently, they’ve come to the realization that GMC rushing from out wide aka a 3-4 end spot, has seen him be dominant…imagine that. Bottomline here is I’d bet good money we all see the kind of pass rushing results by years end we did not believe were possible with our current on roster talent, player health and availability providing of course. And if you seriously don’t understand the cam newton hate, go back and watch the stinking panther’s last SB and see the play where he bailed out like a prima ballerina on going after the football into the pile after he fumbled it. Combine that w/ his post game press conf and you should “get it.” GO BUCS!!!

  22. bucnut2 Says:

    Francisco- what you said!

  23. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Some of y’all kill me man, quick to defend players of other teams. When players like aaron donald sham newton and keekly have s$!#ed on our team during the field of play. Muthaf@!! All them man😠. Its time for payback.

  24. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Ion know how many times I’ve watched sham newton dance and show his teeth in Raymond James, all good got some some dawgs for his @$$ now. aaron donald clean and jerked my QB one Thursday night, all good I got a Sweezy for his @$$ now.

  25. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And I just check the other thread this f@$!boy has the gaul to disrespect ME and say Sims is the best WR the Bucs have. Wow. These imposters are in full effect round these parts.

  26. Dave Says:

Everyone needs to go by last year.

    1. Matty Ice
    2. Brees
    3. Winston
    4. Cam

That should how they played last year
JW could and should move to the top this year with the weapons they surrounded him with.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

A year ago, Ryan was considered bottom two. Now everyone is saying he’s top two.

A year ago, Cam was considered top two…now he is considered bottom two.

So forgive me if I think Winston is better than both of them. The biggest difference between Winston and the others is that Winston has made it clear he doesn’t just want to be a good QB, he wants to be elite. And he’s working hard to make it happen.

Neither Cam nor Ryan say or act the same way. So they each had a good year. Big deal.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    1. Brees
    2. Winston
    3. Newton
    4. Ryan

Ryan had a good year. Well so did Newton the year before. This year, the fight will be between Winston and Brees.

    Just watch.

  29. DefenseRules Says:

If Bucs win the Super Bowl no one will give ahoot whether James is #1 or #4 QB in the NFC South. It’s more about how effective he is within the team concept. Brad Johnson probably wasn’t the #1 QB in the NFL in 2002, but guess what … He won the Super Bowl and that’s all that mattered.

  30. mark2001 Says:

Lakeland…one big red light on Newton. He is only a couple of concussions away from the permanent sideline. So my question is, can he change his game to keep himself away from those head to head compromising situations? I honestly don’t know if he can, or if his instincts will be the end of him. And if the later is true, he only has a couple more years.

  31. BucEmUp Says:

I really like Jameis and the swag/grit he brings to the team. I won’t lie though his inaccurate throws are killers. He also likes to make up his mind early in the play and sometimes can’t go through all his progressions. Hopefully the line and playacting is a little better and more aggressive this season but he’s got to take what the defenses are giving him and not try and force throws that are not there.

  32. darin Says:

Brees is the main reason they have no defense. Greedy Ahole. Wants the whole cap to himself, and he has fallen off considerably. This year he will play baaaaaaad. If youre gona rank them take it all into consideration. Go bucs

  33. Maze Says:

I’d be embarrassed if crybaby Cam was my quarterback

  34. bucs Says:

How can u possibly think Jamis is even close to the qb in the division .He has NOT been all that accurate in the nfl so far .i hope that changes but he is not worthy of carring the other qb’s jock strap as of now. How many games has Jamis won taking the team on his back ? Get reaL !

  35. Joe Says:

How many games has Jamis won taking the team on his back ?

Six last year. Seattle and KC wins were on defense.

  36. mark2001 Says:

Joe… he does show alot of promise…and I’m very optimistic about the near future….but there were big games late last year that we had to win…. Dallas at first thought…New Orleans for another…where it didn’t happen. And those games were huge. Do you think Carolina will be the basketcase this year they were last year? Seems to me we need to take NO twice.

  37. Oxycondoms Says:

How many 23 year old qbs in the history of the game would be ranked higher then 4?

  38. Stanglassman Says:

Not there yet- When Did Cam and Ryan win a Super Bowl?

  39. orlbucfan Says:

Name any other NFL division which has 4 quality QBs like the NFC South. Thoughts? Cupcake, the South AIN’T!!

  40. mark2001 Says:

Stanglass…. they didn’t win a SB..but they have been to one. And did win some huge games….playoff games…. to get there.

Don’t get it? I doubt Jameis wants you to anoint him as the second coming of Joe Montana or Troy Aikman….. Sure he wants and deserves respect as a great young QB…a leader of men. The rest of what we think means nothing…what does matter is winning games, playoffs, and SB’s. And that will build the reputation that he will so richly deserve….it isn’t cheap talk cheaply given…he earned it…and he will deserve it.

  41. DBS Says:

Except when it comes crunch time Then he Folds. The time he is to carry them the most. But let the excuses begin. The same receivers, Running backs and O-line got him in the play off hunt to begin with. And yes try remembering Jameis was a Pro Bowler when? So yes it is 2017. So if Jameis can everyday carry the title “Pro Bowler” So can they!

  42. Oxycondoms Says:

Yeah he choked in the national championship game , people forget that he finished last season while he was still 22 years old

  43. Mark Says:

Get that Doug Martin jab in there.

  44. Not There yet Says:

Stanglassman hey come on we’re all fans here we all know the NFC South and we all know only two teams in the division have a Superbowl and we were there first. I said winning (A) Superbowl. Sorry for not being so detailed or should I be sorry for expecting everyone to have common sense….. But there’s always at least one and it had to be you

  45. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

Much ado about nothing. No one yet knows how good any of these QBs will be this season. Winston has been working hard, has two full seasons under his belt, has three more prime targets to throw to, and may now be better than all of them. No you say? Well, one thing we must all agree on is that we will have to wait and see.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    bucs Says
“How many games has Jamis won taking the team on his back?”

Spoken like a fan who has not paid attention to the games.

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    People comment on his inaccuracy.

Never mind all the drops and the fact that even with them he broke records.

  48. Maze Says:

Oh sounds like some more Mariota fans are still butt hurt lol

  49. Maze Says:

Not all Buc fans are creating equal 😅

  50. mark2001 Says:

Bonzai…yeah…those playoff games were great weren’t they? That Dallas, or at least the NO win was the key.

And seems some fans don’t keep up with the Bucs news. Hasn’t the coaching staff been charting every pass, concentrating on footwork, etc.. because they felt accuracy was at least a small issue last year? Did you look at the TD to interception ratio? Yes, I think there are likely some consistency issues that we are working on…and I think they will be ironed out.

One thing we can possibly agree upon…with the weapons he has this year, he should have one of the best completion percentages and TD to interception percentages in the league….shouldn’t he?

Don’t get me wrong… I like him…alot…. and though some, as stated in this article, might think he might be the 4th qb in our division, by the end of this year, I believe he might show himself to be the best QB in the division.

  51. mark2001 Says:

Maze…true… I thought Freeman wasn’t going to be a franchise QB, that rather than fire Gruden, Allen should have been fired, that Rah was too young and over his head, that Schiano was unproven and an over reaction to Rah’s lack of player discipline, that Lovie would be a disaster on the day he was hired, that hiring Licht and promoting Koetter was a good idea and step in the right direction, and that Jameis was a better pick than Marcus (though liked them both). So all fans aren’t created equally.

I’ve gone through the manic/depression roller coaster ride as a Bucs fan over the last thirty years and how great these guys were going to be…the Sandman, McCants, Charles McRae’s, Bo Knows, Rod Toast, the Adventure begins, Leeman, laid back Vinny, etc. Yikes…we are in a so much better place now. But it is a steady building process now…with a passion for and eye on the present and one on the future, and I like where we are and where we are going. And I think Jameis can get us where we want to go, but not ready to give him keys to the kingdom. Call that what you will.

  52. mark2001 Says:

Did I forget to tell you that Mcrae could lift the front end of a tractor? Paul Gruber part two (and Paul should be in the Ring of Honor, btw).

  53. mark2001 Says:

Further…And glad Paul was inducted in our Ring of Honor, and SB in the HOF, considering what he had to overcome during his years here.

  54. BigMacAttack Says:

No man is an island. Football USC a team sport. Idiot.

  55. BigMacAttack Says:

    Fn autocorrect lol

  56. BurgDweller Says:

If he has a break out season this year, Jameis could easily become the #2 best QB in the South. And let’s face it, Brees isn’t a spring chicken anymore. He is one shoulder injury away from retiring. The tides are turning and this season could be the one where they do

  57. Fred E. Bucs Says:

Looking at the whole body of work, I’d say Jameis IS fourth of four. But he’s got a lot less experience. When you look at incremental improvement and potential, I think Jameis is off the charts. Drew Brees…exceptional, and on the decline I am betting. I think Ryan has peaked; he’s the best he’ll ever get. And that’s pretty darn good. But he’s a choker. Face it. Cam MAY have peaked, and looking just at leaderhip, I think Jameis is at least two of the four, if not one (Brees is the man there). Again…it’s about potential. Jameis keeps improving at the rate he has over two seasons, look out!

  58. unbelievable Says:

If you look at their entire history, then yes, Jameis is 4th.

Looking at last year, I would agree Joe and put him ahead of Cam.
