Dirk Koetter: “I Gotta Make It Work”

June 27th, 2017

Juggler-in-chief Dirk Koetter tips his cap to Team Glazer and shares a new priority.

Change is coming to Buccaneers training camp, says winning head coach Dirk Koetter.

And it has nothing to do with Hard Knocks cameras and recording devices placed in every non-shower, non-toilet crevice at One Buc Palace

Change is coming to Koetter’s August schedule, so he explained in an exclusive chat in today’s episode of the Ira Kaufman Podcast.

The Custodian of Canton (Ira) asked Koetter about his time management as playcaller/head coach, something Koetter has said repeatedly he’s working to improve. Koetter explained he will be more hands-on in the film room this year.

“I didn’t miss any coaching. Really the only thing I missed is some of the meeting time,” Koetter said. “I like to be in that quarterback room when they’re watching tape together. I like being in there. And I just have some other stuff that I couldn’t be in their as much as I want. And it’s ironic that you ask me that today because in my journal this morning, sitting on my desk, I wrote down a note to myself: ‘Change this, and change this so I can be in the quarterback film meeting every day in training camp.’ I gotta make it work.”

As Joe stated in the podcast, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is Reason 1 and 1a why Koetter was named head coach. Desiring and making more time with Jameis in the film room is understandable and wise.

Koetter noted that Team Glazer granted him more help hands this offseason to allow more flexibility.

“Everybody’s been great about that. We’re on the right track as far as the organization has allowed me to bring a couple of extra guys in, in more of a quality control mode,” Koetter said. “We’ve worked very well together to make this thing fit. Everyone wants the same thing in our organization; everybody’s working toward the same goal. Yeah, I’m confident that we’re on the right track. We gotta do it. We gotta back it up.”

Great to hear candid Koetter feeling great about his support system at One Buc Palace.

Just imagine if Koetter wins a playoff game next year. Ownership surely would grant Koetter any possible request he might have.

nice to see the organization at least appearing to be committed to winning. glazer clowns spent enough time paying down debt and embarrassing the bay area with the product on the field for last decade.

if Koetter wins a playoff game next season he will be only one playoff win away from the overrated one dimensional clown…

  2. 813bucboi Says:

with the weapons we currently have, play calling should improve without a doubt….

if he wins a playoff game, he’ll get whatever he wants including an $$$extension$$$….GO BUCS!!!!

  3. Buc1987 Says:

The Bucs never made the playoffs for 15 straight years. Until…they hired an overrated one dimensional clown…

  4. tmaxcon Says:

    Buc1987

he failed…. simple as that. he did far more damage to bucs than good and wasted two hall of famers. results matter. the legend of dungy surpassed reality and his actual accomplishments long long ago.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

the man had one of the greatest defenses of all time and could only manage 2 wins that’s not great that’s laughable. then he goes to indy with one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history and arguably the 3rd or 4th greatest qb of all time and still managed a career losing playoff record. that’s not great that’s hilarious.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

15 years of futility. Some the worst display of football ever seen. Some of Football Follies greatest hits. Then comes Dungy.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    Buc1987

allen, dominick, lovie, schiano and raheem have made the last 15 years equally as laughable. and no koetter a well rounded head coach committed to winning

dungy would have been out of the nfl in two years as a head coach if Sam Whyce did not build his defense for him.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

    ^^^ now not no

  9. tmaxcon Says:

next to gmc dungy is the most overrated buc in history. results matter he was a pretender not a contender

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

Dungy is the epitome of smoke and mirrors. It’s howdy doody time.

  11. BigHogHaynes Says:

@tmaxcon: you sound just like The President, just pure stupidity….stop trampling on Dungy’s accomplishments, we are in the time of Coach K ….tearing Dungy down will not help Coach K win that play/off spot! Forget Dungy, that’s past tense. Let’s see if Coach K can push this team to a play/off run!! Go Bucs!

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

Geez tmax! Ease up a bit. Dungy’s tenure represents one of the very few bright spots in this team’s history. Maybe he could’ve done better, sure. For the record, Koetter’s had ONE season as HC. 9-7 does not make a coach HOF worthy despite whatever his predecessors did. Lets let him win some more games before throwing dirt on Dungy’s legacy.
Until another coach does it, Jon Gruden is the only HC in Buc history to hoist the Lombardi. Maybe, just maybe Koetter can do it too.

  13. BushidoEvans Says:

^Right. I dont get the point of the conversation from those two…see who can throw around the most defamatory statements? I’m at JBF everyday and they are consistently two of the most pessimistic posters. At some point you just get tired of seeing it. What does Dungy have to do with this conversation? Its 2017 move on.

  14. Dewey Selmon Says:

If Dirk wins a playoff game this year they will put him in the ROH and name the indoor facility after him.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

if you think dungy is over rated, then dirk must be nfl’s biggest loser…..lol….dungy won a super bowl with the steelers as a player and with the colts as a coach…..dirk will NEVER EVER EVER accomplish that…..dungy didn’t have the pleasure of walking into a situation that ALREADY had a franchise QB….news flash, the bucs just got their first franchise qb when we drafted Winston…..dungy only had “1” losing season as a nfl head coach in 1996 and he won 6games with complete trash…..how many great defenses did the ravens have over the years and they only have 2 superbowls(2000&2012)….

@87 & tmax are dumb and dumber……GO BUCS!!!!

  16. 813bucboi Says:

he did far more damage to bucs than good and wasted two hall of famers.

I GUESS YOUR TALKING ABOUT GRUDEN HUH!!!!…..

you know, the guy that ripped apart a dynasty, never wanted to develop young talent and was more in love with the media/attention than coaching….GO BUCS!!!!

  17. 813bucboi Says:

results matter he was a pretender not a contender…..

I guess dirk is one of the biggest pretenders in buc history…..his results aint sh!t…..

this is the most talented bucs team we’ve had since we won it all….if dirk doesn’t win a playoff game with this much talent, we have to question if he’s the right man for the job or strictly a decent OC….GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Iamabuc Says:

I’m starting to believe that tmaxcon is really a Panthers fan. I swear!

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

bright spots don’t make it great. only great results make one great. mediocrity is at best what bucs teams were under dungy. great defense with an offense that never had a chance to win. one dimensional. i am so sick of the nice guy BS overshadowing reality it’s sickening. overblowing achievements because someone is a nice guy or popular does a disservice to true winners. if he was great he would not have a career losing playoff record.

he cost both the bucs and indy superbowl championships which is harm anyway you cut. the hall of fame has zero credibility with him enshrined as a coach. if they have a nice guy underachiever wing sure put him in

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    813bucboi

hey dumbass koetter been their one year and is on pace to shatter every record dungy the clown had…comparing one year to 6 is not very bright but i get it yoru feeling were hurt. dungy is 4th best coach in bucs history at best.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    BigHogHaynes

2 playoff wins in six years is not an accomplishment that is a failure…. Get used to trump he’ll be your daddy for the next 7 years. regular americans are sick and tired of the soft arse freeloaders and pansy areses. election results prove it. scoreboard my man scoreboard

  22. JimmyJack Says:

These guys know nothing about Buccaneers football. They don’t even realize that we never even sniff a SuperBowl if not for Dungy building his defense here. It’s embarrassing that they are fans of the same team we are. They own the 1% of our fanbase that you can call clueless.

It’s an absolute crying shame that these clueless fans blowup the chatboards with the most comments made.

  23. Bucemup Says:

813bucboi, koetter will be the coach in team.history when the dust clears

  24. tmaxcon Says:

    JimmyJack

sam whyce built dungy’s defense. go check the list of players handed to dungy. just another fanboy given dungy credit that is not deserved.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    tmax

how did he cost the bucs a superbowl?….he led us to the nfc championship game with shaun king….SHAUN KING! was his qb and he managed to coach the bucs one game away from the superbowl…come on man….

in indy he won a superbowl while the previous colts hc failed even with manning playing in his prime…..most of the blame should be put on manning for throwing int after int in the playoffs….remember it was manning who couldn’t get over the hump until dungy arrived…..

with your logic of thinking pete carroll is overrated and one dimensional since he won a superbowl with a dominate defense and cost the seahawks a superbowl…..wow…dungy and carroll in the same boat….that’s some nice company…2 superbowl winning coaches….LOL…GO BUCS!!!!

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Sam Wyche built the Tampa2??? So which is it? You lived under a rock during those years or do you have serious brain damage. In either case I called you out for being clueless and you helped showcase your cluelessness by uttering such nonsense. I suggest a new hobby cause football clearly ain’t your thing. Miss America pagents maybe

  27. 813bucboi Says:

    tmax & bucemup

how are ya’ll so sure….he’s only been their 1 year….what has he done that has you thinking he will shatter ever bucs record and will be the best coach in bucs history?….

lol….that’s like saying noah spence will be the greatest defensive end in nfl history…..lol….you guys are clueless….GO BUCS!!!!

  28. 813bucboi Says:

TMAX-sam whyce built dungy’s defense. go check the list of players handed to dungy. just another fanboy given dungy credit that is not deserved.

the same can be said about gruden….he won with dungy’s team….especially his defense….#a$$clown….GRUDEN IS THE MOST OVERRATED BUCS COACH IN HISTORY!!!!GO BUCS!!!!

….dungy won a super bowl with the steelers as a player and with the colts as a coach…..dirk will NEVER EVER EVER accomplish that…..

You’re saying Dirk can’t win a Super Bowl as a player with the Steelers? You’re just plain deluded.

  30. Trubucfan22 Says:

813, you are acting as ignorant as tmax is. Dungy isnt as bad as tmax says, but to say gruden is overrated when he won us a superbowl is probably even more idiotic. When it comes to COACHING, gruden did well. He was just bad at building a team. Dungy went as far as the talent on the roster would take him. He never got more out of his players. Brooks, Sapp, Barber, and Lynch would have been all time greats with or without Dungy coaching them. it isnt weird to you that Dungy leaves and we immediately win a superbowl? Didnt the colts go to the superbowl the year after dungy retired? Dungy does a good job of getting his players ready for the season. But doesnt have the motivational punch to get them over the top.

  31. Robert G Says:

    Regain Upshaw
    Mike Alstott
    Donnie Abraham
    Warrick Dunn
    Ronde Barber
    AL Singleton
    Anthony McFarland
    Dextor Jackson
And many more all drafted by Dungy.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Once again, silly season is certainly upon us. Y’all are sounding more & more like a bunch of kids squabbling in the school yard. Sam Wyche was like 25 yrs ago. Tony Dungy like 20 yrs ago. Jon Gruden like 10-15 yrs ago. Ancient history! The only thing that matters is the opportunity that’s in front of us right now. This year’s team has a chance to start something really significant: turn a losing franchise into a perennial powerhouse. All the pieces are there … most everyone knows that. Just need to fuse it all together and get it purring like a well-oiled machine. Damn the torpedoes … full speed ahead!

  33. tmaxcon Says:

you guys are proving my points the legend of dungy far exceeds his accomplishments.

i never said he was a bad coach. he is a one dimensional stubborn coach who produced mediocrity results that some of you call glory years and that to me is laughable when tom brady has 5 superbowl rings and you guys get all excited about dungy and his pathetic 2 playoff wins with a great defense. dungy underachieved with both the bucs and indy he is in the only solely on his popularity and the pc nature of the voting process period. a coach with a career losing playoff record has no place in the hall of fame. if you lose when it matters most you did not succeed you failed.

  34. tmaxcon Says:

    Robert G

but the only ones that matter and have gold jackets were brought in by whyce… i’ll put my guys up against that list of yours any sunday.

    lynch
    sapp
    brooks
    nickerson
    donnie a

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Dude you said it all when you said Sam Whyce built the defense. Your completely ignorant to the facts and you have no idea how we won the SuperBowl in 02′.

And don’t get all butthurt about hearing the raw truth. You are the clueless dreamer who said Dungy did more damage then good here. Something just isn’t working right in that brain of your to say something so dumb. You can cling to you clueless opinion all you like but this site is filled with knowledgeable Bucs fans that know a bit about the history of this team. We all know your are completely wrong with such foolish irrational comments.

  36. JimmyJack Says:

You can pretend like Tony did not build a Championship defense all you like. And you can give Sam Wyche all the credit and believe that coaching doesn’t make a difference. All I can say is that your wrong. Believe me or not it’s a fact, Jack!

  37. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Jimmyjoke

he did not build a “championship defense” other wise, he would have won the “Championship”!!!!!!

Who’s names are on that trophy????

Who are the statue’s at 1 Buc of when they did win that “Championship”!!!!!

Who is going into the Ring Of Honor this year!!!!!!!

thank you tony d for being a good regular season coach, and posting regular winning seasons, but that is about it!!!!!!!!

and if he didn’t do that, Mr Malcolm Glazer was on a mission to Make the Bucs Great!!!!! and he did!!!!!! That was the driving force and he did not settle for just “good” and that is why tony d had to leave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. RayJameisStadium Says:

Malcolm is the original Stick Carrier!

  39. webster Says:

    @ tmax

Wyche did not draft donnie a. That would be dungy along with barber and bk lounge. In any case, dungy’s impact on the game goes beyond just wins and loses. He really opened the door for more african american coaches to get jobs. Sure rhodes, shell and denny green were before dungy, but dungy had a significant tree that followed him and he was instrumental in taking guys from the college ranks ie tomlin and lovie smith etc. He is constantly being asked his advise on coaching hires and personnell moves by organizations across the nfl. I understand that none of that matters to you because your soul focus is the bucs but if dungy wanted to coach now, he would be the first coach hired. There is not one player who will ever talk bad about dungy. All they say is how disappointed they could not win more for this man. They felt as if they let him down. The HOF voters recognize that. Dungy is not the embarrasment you are making him out to be. His contributions to not just the bucs or colts but to the game of football will be felt for years to come.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

If you are to step there and tell me that Gruden did not inherit a Championship defense when he walked through the door of One Buc then you are just an ass.

And I’m not one of those fans who says Jon won with Tony’s team but any Buc fan worth a salt knows that Tony taught his defense how to perform at a Championship level. It’s basically undenayable. Well except to the dreamers.

  41. thespiritof76 Says:

Neither here nor there but have you guys seen this video of the big boy whale jumping out of the water next to a small fishing boat ?

I mean, this dude was HUGE and all of a sudden he scares the hades out of these guys.

    Good grief.

  42. JimmyJack Says:

You dreamers are just fickle fans. The turnaround that Tony created here, after decades of futility deseres a lot of credit. You guys praise Gruden to no end without ever realizing(fickle) that the only reason we got Gruden is because the team was in a position to go after a top tier coach. Now maybe Dungy doesn’t deserve all the credit for getting is to that position but when you opinion is that Tony did more to hurt the franchise then he did good all it does is showcase your cluelessness

  43. Bucsfan951 Says:

Using tmaxipads logic: He can’t spell or use proper grammar to save his arse… He must be a retard and loser in life. Most overrated JBF poster, ever!!!

  44. Steven007 Says:

Haters gonna hate. Everyone reasonably familiar with JBF knows that Dungy and GMC are Cancermax’s toxic hobby horses. The irony is that GMC is arguably the 2nd best DT this team has ever had and Dungy is debatably the 2nd best coach. But that doesn’t matter in Cancermax’s negative world. Because Dungy didn’t win a SB every year he coached unlike Gruden. Oops. Well 1 out of 7 ain’t bad. He has as many SB wins as Dungy. And GMC, well he hasn’t single handedly won any games for us unlike…um, er, [insert name of phantom fantasy DT here]. And for crying out loud, stop giving Wyche credit for Rich McKay’s draft picks. Seriously. The troll was very well fed today.

  45. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m so over maxi pad and his stupid arguments. It used to be fun to make him look stupid, but now I legitimately feel sorry for him.

  46. Buc1987 Says:

813bucboi…not that I care, but I’m pretty sure I’m a bigger fan of Dungy than you. Dumb is not understanding that I was defending Dungy. Don’t be dumb.

The only thing I agree with tmax on as far Dungy is concerned is the HOF. I think there’s much more deserving coaches to be placed in before Dungy. I thinjk his color had a lot to do with it and it shouldn’t have. I would not want to have that in the back of mind…I only got in because of the color of my skin and first black this and first black that. Bringing color into it cheapens the accomplishment imo.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

All it is about is disrespect for me. It’s a slap in the face to knowledgeable Buc fans to discredit what Dungy did for the franchise. And it gets even worse when tmax stoops low enough to take the credit and give it to Sam Wyche. His arguments contain but a shred of reality. But what do you expect from a dreamer.

  48. webster Says:

Anybody that think the only teason dungy got in the HOF was because his color is an idiot. His all pro dads foundation had nothing to do with color. His telling players like double nickle that its more important to be a probowler in your community than it is to be a probowler on the field had nothing to do with color. I know the simple minded fail to see the significance. Dungy is not in the HOF just because he is black.

  49. webster Says:

You could not play for dungy unless you gave back to the community. Last i checked, the community encompassed many races, religion, health issues etc. Because of dungy, you have warrick dunn’s single mothers home foundation. Because of dungy, you have the brooks debartolo school. Stop being ignorant and respect what this man brought not only to the nfl but to society..

  50. JimmyJack Says:

It’s understandable for Tampa fans to not see Dungy as a HOF since he won his trophy elsewhere. Let’s face it, he doesn’t get in without any hardware.

His race got him some accolades for sure but I think you have to talk about the defensive sytem he created before you talk about race. He invented the Tampa 2 which was copied by tons of teams across the league. It’s still used today and it changed the way the game is played.

Tony made an impact with his philosphy and that is a large part of why he was honored. His race was just a detail.

  51. webster Says:

Mike alstot has had his foundation in tampa for the past 20 years all because of dungy. Color is not a factor. Thank you father dungy!!!!

  52. Buc1987 Says:

Not the “only” reason. One of…calm down Webster.

    Fight the power!

  53. 813bucboi Says:

    87

if your defending him, then right on….must have mistaken your comments for one of the other idiots….but to say he got in partly because of the color of his skin is a cop out….your basically saying he is overrated…..

    JOEinPHX

dirk will never accomplish being a champion as a player and coach…..if you think he can still throw the rock as an nfl qb than your just as dumb as everyone thought….

Trubucfan22 says…Didnt the colts go to the superbowl the year after dungy retired?

did they win?….NO…..the saint embarrassed them….gruden is overrated…it wasn’t like he had to come in and build a team….and he killed our chances of a dynasty….he gets all the love because he won the big one….dungy only had 1 losing season in 96 with the bucs….gruden had 3 with all the talent he had….I rest my case….GO BUCS!!!!

  54. webster Says:

Anybody that says that color had “a lot” to do with color is an idiot. Dungy got in on his merit period. Is that better 87? And yea, I will fight the power against idiots.

Actually bucboi, you’ve just redefined dumb. Congratulations.

  57. buccaneerGod Says:

Dungy was decent but of course over rated. He did not win any super bowls here last time I checked. Gruden is a buccaneer god I LOVE THE MAN. Monte Kiffen is the man who created the tampa 2 from the cover 2 which was brought in by the steelers d. Who here thinks dungy was making any the calls when it came to drafting is borderline insane. Dungys team lmao look like gruden team to me. i mean he recruited like 28 new players that year and held defense to a new standerd both his team he was affiliated with was in suber bowl sam year and killed the eagles in the playoffs thank god for gruden

  58. Buc1987 Says:

I’m saying yes…color had something to do with it…and it’s… yes shameful. I’m also saying there’s many other coaches that easily should have went in before him and color pushed him in over them. That’s an opinion. Love the guy, but I don’t think he should have gotten in so early. Therefore I some to that one conclusion as to why he got in so early before others. To me it is color.

  59. webster Says:

    @ 87

Im wrong for saying idiot. But you tell me a coach that has done more both on and off the field and you cant. Dungy got in due to his totality. Color in this case was not a factor. He deserved it because of him as a man period. He did not get in due to of his color. He got in because he brought more than x and o’s or wins and loses. He is father dungy!!!!!

  60. Jimbuc2 Says:

Once again tmax reveals his ignorance. Sam Whyce? Never heard of him. Sam Wyche has a place of honor in NFL history. Learn before you burn. And BigHogHaynes, get over the election dude. Trump will be remembered in history for hitting the ground running and winning his battles. Fake news, fake climate science (a ruse for wealth redistribution, mainly at USA expense), millions more Americans returning to the workplace, standing up to Syrian despot Assad, DOW climbing to heights unheard of, tell me just what exactly has Obama done, except doubling the nation’s debt in just two terms. Or, perhaps you were enthralled to see your (not my) President bow at the waist to a Saudi? Really, dude, do us all a favor and post your BS somewhere else. You are clearly muddled in your thinking.

What are you talking about? Lol…. Stop it already!!! You do know and understand that Dungy actually played in the Cover two on an NFL team correct? Lol
