Dirk Koetter: “I Gotta Make It Work”

Juggler-in-chief Dirk Koetter tips his cap to Team Glazer and shares a new priority.
Change is coming to Buccaneers training camp, says winning head coach Dirk Koetter.
And it has nothing to do with Hard Knocks cameras and recording devices placed in every non-shower, non-toilet crevice at One Buc Palace
Change is coming to Koetter’s August schedule, so he explained in an exclusive chat in today’s episode of the Ira Kaufman Podcast.
The Custodian of Canton (Ira) asked Koetter about his time management as playcaller/head coach, something Koetter has said repeatedly he’s working to improve. Koetter explained he will be more hands-on in the film room this year.
“I didn’t miss any coaching. Really the only thing I missed is some of the meeting time,” Koetter said. “I like to be in that quarterback room when they’re watching tape together. I like being in there. And I just have some other stuff that I couldn’t be in their as much as I want. And it’s ironic that you ask me that today because in my journal this morning, sitting on my desk, I wrote down a note to myself: ‘Change this, and change this so I can be in the quarterback film meeting every day in training camp.’ I gotta make it work.”
As Joe stated in the podcast, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is Reason 1 and 1a why Koetter was named head coach. Desiring and making more time with Jameis in the film room is understandable and wise.
Koetter noted that Team Glazer granted him more help hands this offseason to allow more flexibility.
“Everybody’s been great about that. We’re on the right track as far as the organization has allowed me to bring a couple of extra guys in, in more of a quality control mode,” Koetter said. “We’ve worked very well together to make this thing fit. Everyone wants the same thing in our organization; everybody’s working toward the same goal. Yeah, I’m confident that we’re on the right track. We gotta do it. We gotta back it up.”
Great to hear candid Koetter feeling great about his support system at One Buc Palace.
Just imagine if Koetter wins a playoff game next year. Ownership surely would grant Koetter any possible request he might have.

the man had one of the greatest defenses of all time and could only manage 2 wins that’s not great that’s laughable. then he goes to indy with one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history and arguably the 3rd or 4th greatest qb of all time and still managed a career losing playoff record. that’s not great that’s hilarious.

Geez tmax! Ease up a bit. Dungy’s tenure represents one of the very few bright spots in this team’s history. Maybe he could’ve done better, sure. For the record, Koetter’s had ONE season as HC. 9-7 does not make a coach HOF worthy despite whatever his predecessors did. Lets let him win some more games before throwing dirt on Dungy’s legacy.
Until another coach does it, Jon Gruden is the only HC in Buc history to hoist the Lombardi. Maybe, just maybe Koetter can do it too.

if you think dungy is over rated, then dirk must be nfl’s biggest loser…..lol….dungy won a super bowl with the steelers as a player and with the colts as a coach…..dirk will NEVER EVER EVER accomplish that…..dungy didn’t have the pleasure of walking into a situation that ALREADY had a franchise QB….news flash, the bucs just got their first franchise qb when we drafted Winston…..dungy only had “1” losing season as a nfl head coach in 1996 and he won 6games with complete trash…..how many great defenses did the ravens have over the years and they only have 2 superbowls(2000&2012)….

bright spots don’t make it great. only great results make one great. mediocrity is at best what bucs teams were under dungy. great defense with an offense that never had a chance to win. one dimensional. i am so sick of the nice guy BS overshadowing reality it’s sickening. overblowing achievements because someone is a nice guy or popular does a disservice to true winners. if he was great he would not have a career losing playoff record.
he cost both the bucs and indy superbowl championships which is harm anyway you cut. the hall of fame has zero credibility with him enshrined as a coach. if they have a nice guy underachiever wing sure put him in

When it comes to COACHING, gruden did well. He was just bad at building a team. Dungy went as far as the talent on the roster would take him. He never got more out of his players. Brooks, Sapp, Barber, and Lynch would have been all time greats with or without Dungy coaching them. it isnt weird to you that Dungy leaves and we immediately win a superbowl? Didnt the colts go to the superbowl the year after dungy retired? Dungy does a good job of getting his players ready for the season. But doesnt have the motivational punch to get them over the top.

Once again, silly season is certainly upon us. Y’all are sounding more & more like a bunch of kids squabbling in the school yard. Sam Wyche was like 25 yrs ago. Tony Dungy like 20 yrs ago. Jon Gruden like 10-15 yrs ago. Ancient history! The only thing that matters is the opportunity that’s in front of us right now. This year’s team has a chance to start something really significant: turn a losing franchise into a perennial powerhouse. All the pieces are there … most everyone knows that. Just need to fuse it all together and get it purring like a well-oiled machine. Damn the torpedoes … full speed ahead!

i never said he was a bad coach. he is a one dimensional stubborn coach who produced mediocrity results that some of you call glory years and that to me is laughable when tom brady has 5 superbowl rings and you guys get all excited about dungy and his pathetic 2 playoff wins with a great defense. dungy underachieved with both the bucs and indy he is in the only solely on his popularity and the pc nature of the voting process period. a coach with a career losing playoff record has no place in the hall of fame. if you lose when it matters most you did not succeed you failed.

Wyche did not draft donnie a. That would be dungy along with barber and bk lounge. In any case, dungy’s impact on the game goes beyond just wins and loses. He really opened the door for more african american coaches to get jobs. Sure rhodes, shell and denny green were before dungy, but dungy had a significant tree that followed him and he was instrumental in taking guys from the college ranks ie tomlin and lovie smith etc. He is constantly being asked his advise on coaching hires and personnell moves by organizations across the nfl. I understand that none of that matters to you because your soul focus is the bucs but if dungy wanted to coach now, he would be the first coach hired. There is not one player who will ever talk bad about dungy. All they say is how disappointed they could not win more for this man. They felt as if they let him down. The HOF voters recognize that. Dungy is not the embarrasment you are making him out to be. His contributions to not just the bucs or colts but to the game of football will be felt for years to come.

The irony is that GMC is arguably the 2nd best DT this team has ever had and Dungy is debatably the 2nd best coach. But that doesn’t matter in Cancermax’s negative world. The only thing I agree with tmax on as far Dungy is concerned is the HOF. I think there’s much more deserving coaches to be placed in before Dungy. I thinjk his color had a lot to do with it and it shouldn’t have. I would not want to have that in the back of mind…I only got in because of the color of my skin and first black this and first black that. Bringing color into it cheapens the accomplishment imo.

It’s understandable for Tampa fans to not see Dungy as a HOF since he won his trophy elsewhere. Let’s face it, he doesn’t get in without any hardware.
His race got him some accolades for sure but I think you have to talk about the defensive sytem he created before you talk about race. He invented the Tampa 2 which was copied by tons of teams across the league. It’s still used today and it changed the way the game is played.
Tony made an impact with his philosphy and that is a large part of why he was honored. His race was just a detail.

Dungy was decent but of course over rated. He did not win any super bowls here last time I checked. Gruden is a buccaneer god I LOVE THE MAN. Monte Kiffen is the man who created the tampa 2 from the cover 2 which was brought in by the steelers d. Who here thinks dungy was making any the calls when it came to drafting is borderline insane. That’s an opinion. Love the guy, but I don’t think he should have gotten in so early. Therefore I some to that one conclusion as to why he got in so early before others. To me it is color.
