“I Think He Is Going To Be A Dominant Center”

May 27th, 2017

Bold prediction.

Who better to know than a guy locking horns with Ali Marpet often?

Joe’s referring to Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy talking about new center Ali Marpet. GMC appeared on NFL Network to discuss his being named among the Top 100 Players (again!), this year at No. 52. He also talked about the Bucs in general.

GMC believes fans overlook the offensive line. And he told the nation he’s certain the line will be good this year and he is especially stoked about Marpet moving to center.

“My personal opinion? I think he is going to be a dominant center — not good,” GMC said. “I think he is going to dominate at center.”

McCoy went there on Marpet in April, when Joe asked specifically.

“He’s got, you know, these grippers; once he puts his  hands on you, you’re in trouble. And I truly believe, and you can stamp this and quote it, I believe Ali Marpet will be a dominant, not good, a dominant center. I just really do. He’s so athletic. He can pull. He can make all the blocks. He’s highly intelligent,” McCoy said.

“You know, you need a general in the middle. He’s always on the go. He only knows one speed, and when your center’s going at one speed, and you partner that with [Jameis]. that offense is going to roll.”

Joe has faith in Marpet. When folks couldn’t believe the Bucs were starting a Division-III guard, Marpet proved to be a solid player. Last year, you could argue Marpet could have been a Pro Bowl player.

Yeah, he may have a learning curve at center, but by crunch time this season, say after the bye, Marpet should be playing just fine.

I have to admit since I am not a scout and do not really have time to do much more than read pre-draft articles and analysis from the “experts” that I was sort of upset with the Ali Marpet pick at first. Then after doing some research on him, I was like OK maybe he can be average. Now he is one of my favorite players. Definitely by far my favorite OL by a long stretch.

Hey Joe – I saw in pics on twitter the Bucs lining GMC up at DE. How often has he played DE in games? Is that something just for practice purposes?

  3. USFBUC Says:

Also the pic of Marpet and Baker lined up across from each other makes it look like there could be some epic practices. Baker looks no nonsense and Marpet looks comfortable and like he’s grown into his body a bit more.

Don’t recall off hand GMC lining up at end in games — not saying he hasn’t — but there were times GMC has lined up very, very wide for a tackle and he got good penetration.

Essentially, Bucs coaches are trying to put guys in positions to make plays. If GMC can better rush the passer/get penetration by lining up wide and messing with a guard’s head, so be it.

  5. Pickgrin Says:

Yea – this was the right move at the right time. Marpet’s athleticism will shine at Center once he gets comfortable. He will be pulling and lead blocking edge running plays on a regular basis and looking like a stud pancaking LBs on the outer edge.

  6. tmaxcon Says:

The way gmc wears down so fast and gets abused in run game he probably feels like a paraplegic midget has a chance at domination.

  7. Pickgrin Says:

Another troll alert. Broken record this troll. Don’t feed the trolls

Maxipad – you are so boring. Have something intelligent to say, or just go away dude.

    Old story

I remember when Morris ran a 3-3-5 where GMC was lined up in a DE or wide position. It is a little further for him to get to the QB but he has done it.

back on topic: I am excited for Marpet to put his craft to work at the OC position. I fell it is very exciting to know that Marpet will be flanked with 2 good run blocking guards. I think we need to be patient with the new structure of the OL but by game 3 it should be humming.

Good Feeling: with Marpet at OC, we will have much better depth along the OL.

Curious: Will Dotson hold on to the RT position or will someone else come on strong in preseason.

Go back and watch the Raiders game, third quarter. GMC was on the sidelines and the Raiders were gashing the Bucs up the middle for six- and eight-yard runs constantly.

GMC goes back in the game, that crap stopped.

Love ya tmax, but c’mon. Check the hatred. One thing to (irrationally) not like a player. No need to make stuff up like the PFF tribe.

Dotson, unless he sucks out loud in training camp and presesaon, is your starting right tackle. And he would ***really*** have to suck to lose the job.

First pic I’ve ever seen of Marpet face on.

  15. Broy34 Says:

Wow you know when Joe mentions tmax ridiculousness that he’s gotten that annoying. Perhaps his goal has finally been achieved.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    Joe

come on joe one example does not make up for seven years of suffering and watching the leader of the losing culture smile time and time gain after his team came out flat, unprepared and were embarrassed. the new bucs give us hope. the holdovers led by gmc can derail this train with their nonchalant love of losing. when the leader accepts losing so easily it INFECTS the entire team. and before you say it’s jameis team Ive spent the last 7 years listing to the you, fanboys, choirboys and pc police cry about what a great leader of men gmc is and how lucky we are to have him. but now all of a sudden his not a leader. lol good player but his mental approach has done more harm than good and his meaningless pro bowls are laughable just like the hall of fame.

  17. tmaxcon Says:

joe being a baseball guy you have to understand my position. its very simple. it’s undeniable that gmc was / is the leader and face of the losing culture at one buc palace. that is undeniable nor debatable therefore until the leader of the losing culture is eradicated the team will not be able to reach its full potential. its a curse. similar to the goat and many other over the top superstitions in baseball that grown men go to their grave believing in. gmc is the curse of the bucs simple as that. and they need to just stop wasting time on martin and dotson it’s pro football not a damn charity.

Sorry TMAX the only infection I see is you.Spreading your pointless opinions absent of facts.

  19. Steven007 Says:

Ah, Maxi – leader of the loser posters culture! Nice of you to poke your head out of the troll cave once again. Don’t forget sunscreen. Anyway, would you like some dressing for that worthless word salad? You’ve convinced no one, not even Joe who was very gentle dressing you down.

  20. CannonFodder Says:

Stop feeding it by responding and it will go away. It craves attention and feeds off your reaction.

I think our line will be closer to 2015 production than 2016. Even if it’s average, with all the offensive threats, it should create more space allowing the run to develop and everyone knows how dangerous our O will be if we have a solid run game. Couple play action passes early in the game on first down to keep the box from being loaded will help as well. If Winston is going to make the leap to top 10 QBs, this is the year. I’m excited and can’t wait!

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

tmaxcon, McCoy has been our best Dline guy for years. Quit being such a baby and grow up. 😉

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I have plenty of confidence in having Marpet at Center…which I feel is the most important position on the offensive line because it is the hardest to fill properly.

My doubts come in with Sweezy. Until he proves himself, he’s a weakness.

  23. Reach87 Says:

Asking someone to understand irrational, hate-fueled moronic statements…pitiful. McKoy hate w/ every post is so old.

  24. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Maxi pad,

What you’ve just wrote is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

  25. Topdoggie Says:

If you have to be a troll the max pad at least gets to block the front of the cave.

  26. Bill Says:

What did GMC say about Hawley last year?

  27. Bill Says:

“Dotson, unless he sucks out loud in training camp and presesaon, is your starting right tackle. And he would ***really*** have to suck to lose the job.” — Joe

That’s true, because our backup Tackles are worse than a gimpy Goster Cherilus.
