Sweezy Keeps Injury Details Shrouded

May 25th, 2017

Injury still cloaked in secrecy.

J.R. Sweezy is back on the field, but the mystery continues.

Last season’s highest-priced Bucs free agent acquisition, Sweezy blew his back out allegedly after he signed with Tampa Bay. Sweezy never snapped a chin strap on for the Bucs. Not in underwear football, not in training camp, not in a game of any sort. Never.

Sweezy got the green light from team doctors and he is back on the practice fields of One Buc Palace, albeit underwear football. But when Joe spoke with him after practice, the always polite guard refused to even talk about his injury other than admitting it was a herniated disc. When the injury occurred or how, Sweezy is clamming up.

“We really don’t know,” Sweezy said of the genesis of his injury. “I’ll leave it at that.”

Sweezy really just wanted to talk football. He’s thrilled to be fully involved with a team for the first time since he was a member of the Seahawks in 2015.

“It feels great, finally getting back into it,” Sweezy said, adding he is not holding anything back in an effort to prevent another blown disc.

“Not at all man, I’m ready to go. I’m getting back into the swing of things and knocking the rust off a little bit.”

When asked about being out for a full season, watching games from the press box and pacing the sidelines as the captain of the floppy hat patrol, Sweezy said it was the “hardest year of my life. coming to a new team, probably the worst possible scenario.”

Let’s get it!!! This line will be in full beast mode!

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Man, a hungry and angry Sweezy is exactly what our O-line needs. I hope he exceeds expectations.

  3. Captain Says:

Joe Buc you are just jealous of Sweezy. I bet you will
Never say anything good about him.

  4. tmaxcon Says:

I’m hoping this guy makes it back. New bucs give us hope hold overs give us reason to fear. No more ice cream

I stand by he was never injured. This kinda confirms it to me. The timing of him being cleared was suspicious to me. If I recall correctly it was a day or so after the superbowl.

  6. Piratic Says:

    Cancerous

Him against Suh is my most anticipated one on one matchup come week one in south beach. Man,I can’t wait for that.

And what medical school did you receive your degree from, Dr. Nole-Bucc?

  9. Defense Rules Says:

How, when, where, how it happened is all irrelevant at this point. Only thing that is relevant is getting all this talent fused into a focused T-E-A-M that can kick-ass and take names starting on September 10th in Miami. Convinced that Dirk Koetter has everything he needs to make that happen. Time to run with the big dogs.

Nole on Sat: Thats ridiculous man. Cmon.

  11. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Now that concerns me…

“admitting it was a herniated disc”

I am the first to admit I am no doctor, but friends of mine that have had this issue never reached 100% and often re-injure the problem disc.
I hope he can return to his old form but it is like JOE has said in previous articles about this back issue, no one has ever returned fully from this injury.

  12. GhostofSchiano Says:

The wonders of the internet. I feel better now, hopefully you will as well –

Now I understand why he sat out the year.

What are you talking about? Wrote something nice about him in this story? He’s always been good to Joe. Doesn’t mean Joe is going to bury his head on a story.

  14. FutureBucsGM Says:

Nice work GhostofSchiano. That definitely gave me a clear understanding of the recovery.

And uhm.. I wouldn’t talk about how I got hurt either considering the team could’ve taken dude to court to get a refund if it was not football related, why poke the beehive.

I actually liked Schiano and still do.

  15. BucTrooper Says:

This is BS. There’s something shady AF about him.

  16. Pickgrin Says:

“no one has ever returned fully from this injury.”

BS Ghost. Lots of people have herniated discs in their back or neck and don’t even know about it or manage the condition just fine. There are a # of degrees involved and a “herniated disc” in and of itself means very little. Its the degree and frequency with which a nerve is being pressed on (and the pain that goes along with it) that is the “problem”.

2 people could have the same herniation in the same vertebra – one doesn’t notice and feels no pain and the other guy can’t even get out of bed some days it hurts so bad. Its a very individualized thing and can’t be painted (described) with a broad brush.

That said – If painful symptoms have been previously experienced its a condition that does have a tendency to become “re-aggrevated” at times if one is not careful and proactive about treatment when painful symptoms are experienced. Its kind of hard to be “careful” on an NFL field but you can be sure that the “treatment” options available to these players (massage. chiropractic, accupuncture, anti-inflammatory agents, etc.) are top notch.

  17. Eric Says:

I couldn’t disagree more with the people that said sweezy is shady and intentionally did this.

I disagree a lot but this one is out of hand.

  18. Xandtar Says:

I don’t give a flying flip why how or when he got hurt last year, it’s the Glazer’s money.

I’ll give a Hulk-level flying flip over whether he can play like a potential hall of famer this fall and winter. That’s what we all want, isn’t it?

  19. Brian Says:

Right.. hes shady AF because he hurt himself intentionally? FFS people.

  20. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

    @Joe
I SINCERELY hope that he will be wearing some kind of a back guard down the entire length of his spine. Given his on the field demeanor towards opposing defensive players, I can very easily see an opponent driving a knee into his back when Sweezy is in the bottom of a pile. Same goes for D Jax. If he starts torching too many defensive backs, someone will go for his knees…This is still, no matter what, football; and the “greg williams” defensive mentality will never be gone from all 32 teams no matter what rules they put in place. Perhaps you could run this by Sweezy?

  21. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

No degree just common sense. Again Akeem Spence Allegedly hurt his back in the weight room in 2015. Didn’t miss a beat all last season. I know I ruffle y’all feathers when I talk like that. I’ve always been like this tho. Go against the grain has always been my thang.

  23. Reach87 Says:

Ice cream comments old and moronic.

  24. BobBuc Says:

Seriously – could someone come up with a scenario where Sweezy didn’t commit grand larceny? People get 20 years for stealing beater cars and he took millions. How do you not know you have a herniated disk? Maybe if you’re a mattress tester who never leaves the bed but someone who is getting pounded on every day? Sorry, I’ve been into athletics my entire life and I know when I have the slightest tweak and doctors, Xrays and MRI’s have confirmed that I know my body. NFL players know theirs at least as well and a herniated disk is not a mild sunburn. He ripped us off and l, like all the lovers/anti-haters above can forgive that if he comes back with a vengeance this year.

Guess what the odds of that are though? Three chances, Slim, fat and none. You heard it here first. You did not comprehend though I’m guessing.

  25. BobBuc Says:

I did overlook the obvious explanation that the Bucs paid Sweezy in cash and he, perfectly healthy when it was proffered, blew the disk out lifting a very heavy bag containing more money that most of us will make in a lifetime. Crap, my bad, had it all wrong, apologies all around. You gotta be careful tracking such closely timed unfortunate events.

  26. GhostofTedford Says:

Sweezy will be just fine, obviously he saw what happened to JJ Watt as did Bucs management and had him sit out the year. Another smart move by the up and coming Bucs.

  27. Buccfan37 Says:

I have two herniated discs, L4 and L5, never had surgery. Don’t push myself too much physically. Hope Sweezy is able to compete effectively for the entire season. Doctor wanted to cut me, I said no way.

  28. Pickgrin Says:

Buccfan – good for you. Guess what happens when you consult a surgeon for neck or back pain… they recommend surgery.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

In all seriousness, I’ve been hard on my man Sweez. I do hope he is healthy and ready though. Its just that Sh..eatin grin of his and red hat that says, I am..Easy Money Sweezy!!

  30. Fred E. Bucs Says:

Joe, the pic you show is dated and is bad karma…please have him send you a selfie in a Bucs uni and helmet.

This thought kind of entered my mind too…I wondered if perhaps there was some other health issue that he wanted kept quiet.

As to herniated dick, I have two bulging ones and a pain never stops. I can’t imagine how much worse herniated ones are.

  34. USFBUC Says:

NosBos why do you think he wasn’t injured?

    We still need a RT….
