Stop The Nonsense!

May 20th, 2017

Knock it off!

It’s getting to the point where Joe is about ready to choke someone.

Where did this nonsense start that Donovan Smith is an Anthony Collins-like sieve of an offensive lineman? Who started this? Speak! Who exactly started this hoax?

Joe has a fresh scent of Illinois heifer manure in his nostrils over this, which is a strong indication the source of the stench comes straight from the well-trained orangutans with the PFF tribe and their banal, mindless, grossly misleading — no, idiotic — offensive line grades.

Take this Steven Ruiz character who types for “For the Win,” a USA Today outfit. He is of the mind Smith will single-handily Pearl Harbor not just the Tampa Bay offensive line but the 2017 regular season and any playoff hopes.

In no uncertain terms, Ruiz blasts Smith for his play in his first two seasons in the NFL.

Donovan Smith is the key man here. If he continues to disappoint after a rough first two seasons as a pro, Tampa’s line will struggle once again.

Good grief! Did Ruiz not see the holes Smith blew open for Bucs runners at Kansas City? Did he not hear/read AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht say the reason America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, got too many hits is because receivers weren’t getting separation, thus Jameis had to hang in the pocket too long? Or how Smith’s position coach George Warhop said this week that Smith could one day be one of the better tackles in the game?

Did this Ruiz not notice Smith, playing the most important position on the offensive line, was part of a unit that both blocked for a guy that ran for 1,400 yards and allowed the sixth-fewest sacks in the NFL in 2015? For a rookie, that’s impressive.

Go ahead and look at the defensive ends Smith had to block that season and then count how many sacks they got. Smith did nice job… for a veteran much less a rookie.

And the dude has yet to miss a snap in his career! Yet for some anal reason, Smith has become a piñata for the keyboard warriors and the statgeeks who, between running spreadsheet programs, sit at their desks and try to pick the wax out of their ears.

Joe is just about convinced the greatest thing for human society as a whole would be if the North Koreans jammed the PFF tribe’s network with ransomware so not even Cris Collinsworth’s deep checkbook could afford to buy an internet version of a get-out-of-jail card.

joe, pay ATTENTION! Smith is a tremendous liability in the passing game. If not for Winston’s acumen of sesnsing pressure, Smith’s stats would be horrendous. He has terribly slow feet, doesn’t set at the right depth, and his punch is weak. He gets beat all the time. Winston and Koetter bail him out constantly. What more is there to say. He’s just not very good and the PFF have the stats to prove it. He’s played every game whoopdy effing doo. Sadly he’s all they have for now at LT. WAKE UP he is not good and definitely not the cornerstone LT you are claiming. hell he’s barely serviceable. PFF is “dead on balls accurate” — My Cousin Vinny

@Joe. Comments like this prove you have no idea what you’re talking about. DS is a huge liability in the passing game. He has awfully slow feet, never sets at the right depth, and has a soft punch. If it weren’t for Jameis acumen of feeling pressure and Koetter’s ability to scheme around him, his stats would be more horrendous. Watch the tape, I dare you. PFF is totally right and to dismiss their claim is just ignorant. SO what he’s played every game. All that means is there’s nobody behind him on the depth chart worth a damn. Open your eyes, use your brain, and quit writing how awesome he is. He’s awful

Might let you back once the regular season begins but you will not be suspended again. ***If*** Joe lets you back in, third strike is permanent. Joe doesn’t push false information. 15. SB Says:

I know he plays probably the hardest position on the oline but… who was the worst starting Oline man for the Bucs last year? I know he’s not terrible… but let’s be honest he hasn’t been good enough either. He’ll get better ofcourse, (at least we hope lol) and he hasn’t missed a game and he run blocks well and he handles bull rushes with ease. But his feet can slow, inconsistent and lazy at times. Lets see what kind of jump he can make in his 3rd year.

  16. tnew Says:

SB, Cherillus, Dotson and Hawley played worse last year.

  17. tnew Says:

I just watched all of the film that I could find of the Bucs. Most of them were highlights. The thing that jumps out is Winston is under constant pressure. The other thing is that most of it is from right tackle and the middle of the line. Everyone wringing their hands over the Marpet move needs to go watch and isolate on Hawley. I understand his legs were battered by the end of the year but he was targeted, as was the right side of the line. Isolating on Smith he does look to be more of a Right Tackle type, but he is serviceable at left tackle and frankly our best option there. One thing to note, he is very strong if he gets his hands on you. If he goes down, the Bucs might really be screwed. The biggest issue I see in the Bucs, really looking at the team is the O-line depth, specifically the Tackles. Who are our back up Tackles? Espn (who doesn’t know the team, I know) list Wester at back up left tackle and no right tackle backup. So, that means that the backups must either be Benenoch or Pamphile. Moving Pamphile would create quite a shuffle.

Joe, any insight on how Benenoch’s role could be expanded for the Bucs?

  18. Tampa Tony Says:

So the receivers were the problem? They stopped the o line from blocking well in the run game outside of a few games? I don’t buy the wide receiver excuse either as everyone told us prior to the draft Jameis was excellent at throwing open receivers and besides there isn’t much separation between cbs and WRs in this league.

Facts are Donovan Smith lead the league in penalties for a offensive linemen and was the LT for a underperforming line who had just blocked for a 1400 yard rusher (who Joe wants off the team) so acting like this line didn’t regress is almost as dumb as wanting to draft Johnny Manziel

The off season must be really boring as JoeBucsfan has turned into a string of post defending Donovan Smith or articles trying to support the Joes belief that Martin will be off the team. I might just stick to listening to the podcast as the site has become too predictable.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Pieces like this are getting a bit too predictable Joe. Get the wild hordes riled up, then try to calm them down (we’re getting plenty of that out of Washington nowadays aren’t we?). Donovan’s first 2 yrs have had high points & low points, nothing more, nothing less. Just like most should expect from a young man learning a very complex position while playing against the top NFL linemen. He’s held his own & is improving IMO. What concerns me far more than Donovan is that there’s no one BEHIND him … if he goes down who’s the next man up who can play LT even remotely as good as he can? Folks need to be rooting for Donovan to stay healthy & keep on learning & improving.

  23. K2 Says:

If he stops the stupid penalties he is a solid LT. Apparently, Smith and McCoy have the same fan club.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I come down in the middle for Smith……no, he’s not as bad as PFF claims….but does he need improvement…..yes….he needs to get better and clean up the penalties.

  29. MadMax Says:

    Thats Amy smart.

  30. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Joe, you’re defending a subpar player like he’s an All Pro talent without any facts to back it up. Last season the Bucs most telling stat was this:

When Winston was pressured 13 or more times, the Bucs went 0-7.

When Winston was pressured 12 or less times, the Bucs went 9-0.

Donovan Smith gave up far more pressures than ANY other offensive lineman last season with 57. To top that off, he also committed 14 penalties. As late as mid-November, he was leading the ENTIRE NFL in QB pressures allowed.

9-0 vs 0-7. That is as telling as a stat can get.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

All-pro LT’s are hard to find.

Apparently that’s what some Buc and PFF fans want and expect.

What!? You mean to tell me that Smith’s not an all-pro LT after 2 seasons? Better get rid of him then.

  32. I bleed red Says:

Clearly we can all agree that Donovan Smith has room to improve. Is he the worst? ..NO …is he perfect? of course NOT but he has made a lot of mistakes coupled with some great plays as well. He’s 23 y.o. He is a mountain of a man who should get better as time goes forward.

  33. LakeLandBuc Says:

Last season the Saints led the NFL in offense. Then went out and signed a top free agent Guard. Then spent a 1st round pick on a Tackle. Sean Payton knows that you need an ‘elite’ offense line for the offense to click. I predict the Bucs will be battling the Carolina Panthers this season for 3rd place in the NFC South.

  37. Joe Says:

Joe, any insight on how Benenoch’s role could be expanded for the Bucs?

Currently not pegged as a starter (that’s, from left to right, Donovan Smith, Kevin Pamphile, Ali Marpet, J.R. Sweezy and Demar Dotson). As Bucs coaches have discussed, they cross-train backups and some starters to play both tackle and guard. So unless Dotson or Smith gets hurt, or Dotson stinks out loud, Benenoch is a reserve.

George Warhop said this week if Smith or Dotson gets hurt, Kevin Pamphile is next man up as the backup tackle. Pamphile would slide into Smith/Dotson’s spot. Guessing — just a guess — Pamphile’s spot at left guard would be plugged in by Benenoch.

  38. Joe Says:

    tnew:

The other thing is that most of it is from right tackle and the middle of the line. Everyone wringing their hands over the Marpet move needs to go watch and isolate on Hawley.

Yup. There is a reason the Bucs moved Marpet rather than sign/draft a new center.

As far as backup tackle, it’s Kevin Pamphile. That’s what George Warhop said this week. If Donovan Smith or Demar Dotson get hurt, Pamphile slides over.

Not sure who would be the left guard but guessing Caleb Benenoch or Leonard Wester. Just a guess.

  39. tnew Says:

Thanks for the update Joe.. Lets just hope that the line stays relatively healthy.
