When Did Mike Smith Know?

May 15th, 2017

Piecing together timeline.

NFL folks have ways of knowing things way before the public at large gets a sniff. That stands to reason since they work in the NFL.

Take the issue of Mike Smith, the Bucs defensive coordinator, staying with Tampa Bay when he reportedly had interviewed to be head coach in Jacksonville and pulled out of the running for the Chargers’ top job.

If you do not listen to “Bucs Uncensored,” the anything-but-boring podcast hosted by Joe’s good friend “The Commish,” Justin Pawlowski, what the hell is the matter with you? Recently, Justin interviewed colorful, smart Miko Grimes, wife of Bucs corner Brent Grimes. Brent and Miko, obviously, have a history with Smith dating back to their Atlanta days, and they are tight with Smith.

In the podcast, Miko dropped the following little nugget.

“You know, I asked him,” Miko said of Smith. “The last game of the season I met up with him in the parking lot. I said, ‘What’s good? I hear you might go to Jacksonville. You might go to L.A.?’ I’m like, ‘What the f— is up? We came here to play with you. Like, are you leaving us or what?’ And he told me he wasn’t going anywhere.”

The very next day, it was reported Smith would interview with the Jaguars. A week later, it was revealed Tom Coughlin would take over football operations in Jacksonville.

Smith and Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell, who was essentially gelded with the Coughlin hire, have a work history together. Did Smith, perhaps through Caldwell, already know Coughlin was the man in Jacksonville and therefore understood he didn’t have a chance at the Jags gig because he wasn’t a Coughlin guy? And Smith just decided to go through with the interview anyway, perhaps just pick Coughlin’s brain?

Often in the NFL, interviews are little more than shams and a way a general manager and a coaching candidate gain intel on each other. It was made famous by Al Davis and often practiced by Bill Belicheat. Sort of high level networking.

Smith pulling himself out of the running for the Chargers gig wasn’t much of a surprise. On the surface, that job seemed like a coach-killer. Philip Rivers is on his last legs and with the team moving that Chargers job seems like a nightmare. (Joe heard via a former member of the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams coaching staff that a franchise in moving limbo, such as the Rams, is a total cluster without yet a permanent home or stadium.)

So with the information Miko dropped, it sure smells like Smith already threw in the towel on getting a head coaching job elsewhere before the 2016 season ended.

  1. Buc Fresh Says:

I still believe if Mike Smith was offer the Jags job he was gone . I believe he only wanted the jags job. So when it opens again in 2-3 year , Mike Smith will go interview.

  2. EA Says:

Like he would tell Miko what’s up.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

All that’s important is that we got an excellent DC out of it all regardless of how it went down. Bucs are building something special.

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I can’t stand Mike’s mouth or attitude. …she’s a stain on Brent Gimes

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I meant Mike (stupid auto correct)

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Omg……stupid auto correct. …..it’s Miko

  7. AC Says:

@thebucsanthem no one cares who you like or dislike worry about your own life i can assure you she doesn’t give a Sh!t if you like her or not

  8. Lunchbox Says:

I understand she is part of the package of Brent Grimes being here, and I’m very happy he is with the Bucs. But honestly, if I never heard her again, that’d be fine with me. Just my opinion.

  9. Lunchbox Says:

And as AC just said, I can guarantee she wouldn’t give a sh1t about my nor anyone elses opinion about her, nor should she.

  10. The Buc Realist Says:

I am so excited with the coaching staff that is assembled!! Really hope licht steadies the pipeline of talent and Coach Mike Smith remembers how fun it is to lead a dominate defense and just falls in love with our beloved area here!!!!

If you are not excited right now, Then you need to question if you are a football fan at all!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was hoping more of miko’s passion and class would have rubbed of on the Pathetic leader if the losing culture cancer93 by now.

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

One of the best things about a great coaching staff, is there ability to salvage “reclimation projects”
Players whose career has stalled.- either due to bad coaching( for them at least), or bad fits into the teams scheme.

Players with talent, but arent working out where they are at.
I think Mike Smith and Staff improved the play of Robert Ayers,Brent Grimes, and Daryl Smith.
All 3 were playing well- but seemed to step up with Smith.

Real improvement was with our Safeties. Both Tandy and Conte were playing at a high level last year.
    Both playing their best ball.
I think both JJ Wilcox- a tremendous hitting former first rounder, and Chris Baker both will be impact players on our Defense.
Baker was already an impact guy
    Wilcox really should be.

Im looking foward to see if we pick up any other vets, after the cuts.
Expect to see a DE join the ranks- one way or another.
Finally have a coaching staff able to improve a player- instead of tearing him down

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

And, Tmaxipad still crying about McCoy.
Who must be grinding Tmaxipads ex-girlfriend, even as we speak.

So, how long was she sneaking around to see Him, before you found out?
Yuck! No wonder you’re bitter, tmaxipad

  14. Fsuking Says:

Let’s just base our knowledge of the situation on a Mike Grimes interview where she asks Mike Smith “what the f- is up”?

  15. Teacherman777 Says:

    @Capt Tim

    Thats right!

    Tell Tmaxipad whats up!

    I got GMC’s back too!

    Go Bucs!!

  16. DallasBuc Says:

She also said he could have told her that and then taken a head coaching job elsewhere. So it really doesn’t matter in any way what Smith told her and she acknowledges as much.
What are we talking about again?

  17. Cobraboy Says:

    That Miko interview was excellent!

  18. Hodad Says:

As far as Miko goes, I like a sista who’s keeping it real! Smith has the best job, with his good friend in an area he likes. He’s been there H.C., done that, now looks happy to lead hopefully a championship defense. He got a few new pieces on his side of the ball, and looks to add some new twists. His staying on suggests the Glazers have finally settled in on this staff adding much needed stability to the organization.

  19. Stpetebucsfan Says:

If the Bucs are as good as we hope this is also a much better career move for Smitty.

His D was poor the first half of last year but finished strong. He was an interesting option but he wasn’t a hot name.

If the Bucs should reach the SB in the next two years Smitty will be able to pick his next job. He’ll be the slam dunk choice.

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

Miko can tell it Iike it is. Too bad Brent is not younger now, I’d welcome her colorful takes for a long spell.

  21. unbelievable Says:

Comments sections are starting to get so predictable and boring:

    Realist constantly bragging about nothing.

Maxipad complainfing about GMC regardless of the subject at hand.

Bunch of snowflakes scared of Miko Grimes.

Lol JBF. Gotta love it though. Go Bucs!

  22. JimmyJack Says:

It’s pretty cool to see how Smith promoted Dirk and helped him get a HC job. Dirk now is going to help Smith get a HC job, considering our defense keeps improving.

These 2 guys work very good together and fielded some winning teams in their time. Hate to lose Smith eventually but he has to take a promotion.

Always liked Smith and know he can be successful no matter which city he goes to.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Personally, I think SMith is smart enough to know he can get more money from the Glazers if it looked like there was a chance he would leave.

  24. Stanglassman Says:

CTim- Ayers was a 1st rounder, 18 overall. Baker was undrafted and Willcox was a 3rd rounder.
I’m looking forward to seeing Willcox exceed fan expectations for his year. I believe he recently changed positions and now will flourish with this coaching staff and system.

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

Grimes played well last year and Miko is small price to pay. I still think ATL made a mistake letting Mike Smith go and losing Koetter
