Lotta Love For Chris Godwin

Yesterday, Joe shared Bucs video of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, hooking up with rookie receiver Chris Godwin.

It was a perfectly-placed pass by Jameis, just a hair over the outstretched arm of Lavonte David. But perhaps more importantly if not impressively was the catch Godwin made.

Godwin apparently has been so impressive (for a rookie) in underwear football, it moved prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports to doff his cap.

@PriscoCBS: You know who looked really good today at Tampa Bay OTA? Rookie receiver Chris Godwin

Now that was on Tuesday. After that practice, winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter mentioned Godwin has been sticking out in practice more than heralded rookie tight end O.J. Howard.

Apparently, that may still be the case based on Koetter’s words from yesterday.

“Yeah, Chris is off to a fast start,” Koetter said. “Like I said the other day, Chris and O.J. … are both doing fine. O.J. has showed up probably a little bit more as a blocker than a receiver the first couple days. But Chris is – a couple small mental blips but the physical stuff is there, for sure.”

This sure gets Joe geeked up. Problem is, rookies and young players shining in underwear football scare the hell out of Joe. Young receivers and return guys who looked like underwear football all-stars were garbage when the pads came on. Guys like Tommy Streeter, Solomon Patton and Kenny Bell.

While Joe is very much intrigued by the videos of Godwin and the accolades, Joe is trying to temper excitement until the pads are put on in training camp.

Hey Joe…..the rookies shining is better than hearing they look like DJax from yesteryear.

  3. Mick Says:

NOS I guess you could say it’s a win-win situation.

  4. Mike Says:

The difference with Godwin and those others is that he also produced at a high level in college and against top level competition, so putting that together with his initial showing in OTA’s is a good indication that we have ourselves a future legit #2 WR, and potentially current #3 this year.

I agree with joe….I wanna see if he’s still sharp mid july when the pads are on and intensity picks up….GO BUCS!!!!

    That’s fair.

Joe’s been jaded by the Streeters/Pattons and Bells of the world.

Getting jacked is a natural occurrence for a true fan……better to get jacked and have your hopes up than to be immediately disappointed. The good news is that we have plenty of players to get jacked about.

I honestly think Godwin is more the type to do better WHEN the pads do come on. He’s a physical player, he wins contested balls, he runs and blocks hard. I thought before that he would shine most when the pads came on. That being said, it does worry me a little that he is standing out so much without pads… though he did run 4.42 at the Combine, what stood out most about him and his game was his physicality….

BTW, Joe… you missed one stud OTA/Underwear Football standout…. The Golden Goose, Chas Gessner. Gruden loved that guy.

Anyome starting to worry abt OJ?

Great pick. Excited to see this young man develop.

@Joe … “Joe’s been jaded by the Streeters/Pattons and Bells of the world.” Hard for anyone to know whether any rookie is the real deal until they get in the Big Top and perform consistently IMO Joe. However, in Godwin’s (and OJ’s) case, they’ve both got great potential, our coaching is considerably better than in the past, and they’ve both got a more experienced Jameis firing the ball to them. It’s gonna be a fun ride this season.

    Thanks for the repeat..

We will see when we get to the pre-season what we actually have in OJ and C-God. I am amped, though.

More as a blocker than receiver?????

the ghost of the blocking icon lives

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

Been watching Godwin. He has an unusual skill set. He uses his body to shield defenders, and great hand strength to catch everything around him.
Only one reciever in the NFL that he reminds me of.

Jerry Rice. He looks just like a young Jerry Rice.

Not saying he’ll have that kind of success, or Career. But the way he fights off defenders, and hand stabs every ball in his catch radius-
Looks just like a young Rice.

My best wishes for this young man., he could really be special!

  21. Brett Says:

Was Prisco there? Why is he saying this?

  22. ARGH_M8E Says:

Anyone who can’t see Godwin is going to be a stud, is like a blind man or woman picking out their favorite porno. No clue. Not a knock against the blind because I respect anyone who has to battle such odds. I’m just saying… CANT YOU SEE THIS GUY if YOU’RE WATCHING, because I’m telling you… HE’S NEXT LEVEL.

    It’s sooooooo on!!!

  23. Joe Says:

Was Prisco there? Why is he saying this?

Yes, Prisco has been at One Buc all week. No, someone hijacked his Twitter account (sarcasm). 🙂

  24. Pa Privateer Says:

Godwin will outshine Howard this year in the passing game. Next year Howard will come on stronger. Koetter will have a very difficult decision to make this season when deciding #3 WR….Godwin vs Hump. Everyone wins this battle
