Two Players To Monitor

April 27th, 2017

Joe was asked last night on Twitter if he was going to do a mock draft.

No, can’t. As most readers know, Joe is not a big fan of mock drafts. At best, they are guessing games. Joe can’t exactly rag on mockers and then do a mock.

Who does Joe want the Bucs to draft? Regular readers should know this: Dalvin Cook. The Bucs need a running back in the worst way and Joe believes Cook likely is the best every-down back in the draft. Leonard Fournette is not an every-down back. Folks are talking that Christian McCaffrey will play some slot receiver. The Bucs already have one (please don’t kill the messenger).

Now if one is to believe the rumors pumped out by BSPN uber NFL insider Adam Schefter yesterday, he claims Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is desperately trying to trade down. That tells Joe that either the Bucs dug up something on Cook that has them spooked, or he will go much higher than No. 19, or they predict Cook to fall and figure they could trade down, get an extra draft pick or two, and still grab Cook.

Joe knows the Bucs (still) need an edge rusher, too. Although he may not be there at No. 19, linebacker Haason Reddick from Temple is intriguing.

No, the Bucs don’t need a linebacker and the only opening is potentially strongside linebacker. But this Reddick is an every-down player who can rush the passer. He can play strongside linebacker, and when the Bucs go to nickel- and dime-packages, Reddick could move to edge rusher. Some scouts believe Reddick to be so good, in this scenario, it would be like Licht getting two positions in one selection.

Those are the two players Joe is going to pay close attention to tonight. And Bucs fans should as well.

Enjoy!

No mock draft but great opportunity for another Dalvin Cook pic

  2. BucsFanFromSaintsLand Says:

I agree. I think they still like Cook and he will be available later in the 1st if they trade back. I also think that they may take LB R. Anderson in the 2nd or 3rd. He can play 4-3 SAM or pass rush out of the 3-4 (which I believe we will play more of this year).

  3. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Reddick..wow..impossible to see there at 19..
My mock draft is pretty easy peezy..

    Rd.1 No Cook
    Rd 2 No Cook
    Rd 3 No Cook
Rd 4 to 7 No Cook..

    I want:
    Rd 1 DE or S
    Rd 2 S or DE
Rd 3 TE or WR or RB

    —–

  4. DallasBuc Says:

If they trade back it’s BPA at the following positions RB, WR, DE, TE and Cook if available will not be the pick.
They want to address all four positions with first four picks and would like to accomplish that in the first three rounds.
    Trade back
    Pass on Cook
    Make Mixon a Buc

  5. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Mixon in the latest NFL Network draft is projected going in the late 1st Rd..I’ll take him as our RB..

  6. bucs_365 Says:

    (1) Reddick is going higher. (2) There’s been no connections with Reddick and the Bucs to this point, so I doubt it. If they’re after Reddick, then they’ve done the best job of disguising their intentions in several years.

  7. bucs_365 Says:

I think it’s gonna be AJax or Jordan Willis.

  8. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Just saw 30 minutes of Adoree Jackson tape, my lord, my sweet jesus and mary, that guy is a freak of nature!

  9. briandorry55 Says:

So let me get this straight…

Getting Haason Reddick would be like drafting two players in one, because he can play end on passing downs…

But McCaffrey is a bad fit because he’s the most freakish route runner in the history of running back prospects so operating out of the slot on occasion is an appealing option…but the Bucs have Adam Humphries…so there’s not room for McCaffrey.

How many defensive ends can you have on the field at one time? I’m pretty sure Koetter could find a way to put McCaffrey, Humphries, Evans, Jackson, and Brate on the field on passing downs.

  10. briandorry55 Says:

    @DallasBuc

Do they have a nice chair for you in the war room?

  11. Bucco bruce Says:

    Mike Mayock has Malik hooker

  12. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

FSU alum here. Die-hard Noles fan.
    Love Dalvin Cook.

    Mixon >>>>>>> Cook

    Be smart, Bucs. Trade back.

  13. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Mixon’s PR team has done a hell of a job straightening things out. He’s jumping up the charts faster than I can jump at a chance to see Julian Edelman in the shower..

I like tony from LA’s post..

Get Mixon..but he might not be there past late Rd 1..

  14. Dooshlarue Says:

    Just making a point Joe:
If McCaffery can play slot as well, doesn’t that equate to depth?
    Isn’t that what we want?
I’m not beating the drum for him but I find it odd that depth is crucial especially at slot.

  15. Joe Says:

If McCaffery can play slot as well, doesn’t that equate to depth?

Please don’t shoot the messenger here: The Bucs really, really, really — as in REALLY — like Adam (Rudy!) Humphries.

They like him so much it’s difficult to imagine them looking to replace him.

At 19, the Bucs want the guy on the field as much as possible.

  16. Guzzie Says:

I like the draft more than I like Christmas lol, today is the day!!!!

  17. Anthony Says:

Basically, joe doesn’t want to be wrong in writing.

  18. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Pretty much every Bucs fan out there:

Lloyd Christmas: Hey Jason, what are the chances of drafting Dalvin Cook?
Jason Licht: One in a million, Lloyd
    Lloyd Christmas: So…you’re saying there’s a chance!!!

  19. Iamkingsu Says:

    Malik hooker

  20. Dreambig Says:

Just read more on the Dalvin Cook Sports Illusrated piece where there was a agents runner spreading false stories about Cook to hurt his draft stock. Seems they were jilted because Cook choose another agent. I predict that some GM will their homework and Cook will not fall so much after all. He won’t be around by the time the Bucs pick. Kinda hoping the Bucs do trade down and pick up more pics!

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

So many good players, at our positions of need.
Its gonna be hard for the Bucs to make a bad pick

I cant wait. Gonna be a loooong day!

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Cook will not be on the board at 19.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Finally the BIG day arrives. Capt Tim, you nailed it … “So many good players, at our positions of need. Its gonna be hard for the Bucs to make a bad pick.” As long as Jason doesn’t fall in love with a long snapper this year, we’re in good shape. Time for all Bucs fans to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

  24. Joeypoppems Says:

Like I said yesterday. All the top CBS are dropping like flies. It’s gonna be hard for Cook to drop past Philly now, especially if the off the field issues are not true.

Plus Cook publicly stated a couple weeks ago that the Eagles were “heavily interested” in him.

  25. Since '76 Says:

Since 76 will be watching and hoping for Joe Williams, Utah on Saturday

  26. Buc Fresh Says:

It’s draft party day. Let’s gooooooo

  27. Gencoimports Says:

The Bucs should draft a RB sometime this week but they don’t need a one in the worst way. Certainly not a back in Davin Cook who has 13 career fumbles.

Defensive End. Right offensive tackle. Safety. Cornerback. Tight End. Wide Receiver. All bigger needs right now than running back IMHO.

If we pick up an extra second rounder and Cook is still there, then we could risk it.

I hope Light is able to trade down and then trade down again. stock pile as many second and third round picks as possible.

  28. Deenice07 Says:

The 👀’s don’t lie, Mixon is the best RB in this draft!

  29. Fred E. Buc Says:

“…Bucs dug up something on Cook that has them spooked…”
Naw. They already know he’s damaged goods, and if there is any question on character with Martin (whom I think is out for redemption), Cook is much worse. I think the Bucs stay with Martin and pick up Marlon Mack in the 3rd Round. I don’t think Cook will last half a season, no matter who he plays with.

  30. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

How can people say McCaffrey doesn’t fit? because he can play slot receiver doesn’t mean he will be a slot receiver on every down, doesn’t our current back run routes? come on…. this guy is a beast at any position the more weapons the better and hasn’t had major injuries or off the field issues. In my eyes he’s the best choice hands down, but as we all know opinions are like assholes everyone’s got one.

  31. Blake_bucsfan Says:

^ it’s not that people are saying that. It’s just another tired argument from Joe that I doubt he even believes.

Obviously if the Bucs draft Cmac, it will be for his skill as a Rb and his overall versatility. Because he is a phenomenal, in between the tackles runner despite what his size suggests. In addition to being able to linr up ANYWHERE as a reciever, and he’s able to field Kicks & Punts.

  32. Bird Says:

Yah. Cooks rankings on many analysts board are in the 20 to 50 range. I know that means nothing but maybe the bucs could trade back and still get him and pick up another draft pick. Dream scenario would be cool and budda baker. Cause team needs free safety. Not another strong safety

  33. Tampa Tony Says:

After today this site will no longer be called JoeDalvinCookfan.com

Can’t wait until this draft is over

  34. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

@LifeOfABucFan , Adoree’s tape is impressive!!! would love that guy, can you imagine him zooming around the field in a Bucs uniform?!!!

@Fred E. Buc would love to have McCaffrey but that likely wont happen.. but i agree with you 100%, probably and hopefully the most likely outcome if they keep druggie Martin and will try to pick up Mack in the 3rd he said the Bucs have been talking to him alot according to Joe. and why wouldn’t they he is litterally in their back yard

  35. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

lmao @ Tampa Tony hahahahaha !!!!

  36. martinii Says:

HAPPY DRAFT DAY! It’s finally here, BS turns into reality and after months of discussion tonight we will start adding new Bic’s (Unless of course we trade down out of the first round.) I have no player preference. This draft is deep in good players and I am sure Licht will come away with a few welcome additions. I like joe do not do a mock, next to trying to get a date with Kim Kardashian, it is a useless exercise. No, today I am going to get a pizza, some wings, and a six pack and enjoy the festivities. May your favorite player get picked, enjoy, and GO Buc’s!!!!

  37. BuccoDav Says:

Reddick looks like a beast! But highlights only show part of the story.
Has anyone seen the rest of the film? What’s he doing when he isn’t creating highlights?
Not that it matters. He’s probably gone by 19.

  38. Brian Says:

“desperately” trying to move down? I swear you just make stuff up and put it in writing. Hack.

  39. BuccoDav Says:

BTW… What’s the over/under on JBF Dalvin Cook stories today?

  40. Joeypoppems Says:

    Over/under 2.5 Cook stories

  41. BuccoDav Says:

Ooohhh, Joey, we still have 12 hours. I might have to take the over on that…

  42. Tampa Tony Says:

At least two more Cook stories today book it!!!

Cook is the Manziel of this draft for the Joes

  43. Ndog Says:

Blake saying McCaffrey can run between the tackles in the NFL based on his college tape is equal to saying Tebow will be a great pocket qb in the NFL. In other words it’s ridiculous. The guy is going to be a glorified 3rd down back/return man in the NFL.

  44. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Life, I’ve seen you post about not wanting Cook because of his past. I’m not advocating for Cook, but I don’t get why you want Mixon. If you’re being consistent I’d think you wouldn’t want either of them.

  45. Tampa Tony Says:

Ndog- Why not he’s nearly the same size as Cook who everyone believes can run between the tackles? Lot of hate for a guy who was more productive than Cook and Fournette and better with securing the ball as well

  46. Ndog Says:

No hate at all I hope the kids great especially if we get him he just is the exact same player as Reggie Bush and will have the same NFL future. They beat up on the same crappy PAC12 defenses, put up the same eye popping numbers and have the same build, why should the results be any different? People got suckered into thinking Bush would be great to and look at the result. A great athlete but no quite big enough in the legs to be anything more than a specialist.

  47. Tampa Tony Says:

You could make arguments against any back in this draft especially since colleges only really play 2-3 good schools a year. Cook tore up a bad acc but looked great against Michigan and Clemson. Fournette was hurt a lot and McCaffrey the only knock on him is Size as he broke Barry sanders yardage mark that stood forever.

I’m not a fan of a RB in round 1 especially behind this o line

  48. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Not really Ndog, and I gotta say that analogy is pretty awful, seeing that everyone who wasn’t a gators fanboy knew that Tebow had terrible mechanics, was never consistently accurate, and wouldnt be able to run over NFL defenders like he did against college kids.

And me saying that Cmac can run inbetween the tackles based on tape is no less ridiculous than Fsu Nuthuggers saying that Cook will be the next Marshall faulk based on watching him for 3 years.

  49. BigHogHaynes Says:

MIXON THE MIDIGATING FACTOR!! HE’S THAT DAMN GOOD!

  50. Ndog Says:

Blake think what you will but fan boys of McCafreey like you are blinded by your desire to see him succeed and he will as a returner or 3rd down back. He is a better version of Charles Sims who is always hurt just like Bush was always hurt. Say what you will but they are the exact same player. To me Cook is nothing like Faulk in that he is not as fluid and doesn’t juke, Cook is more of a see hole make a quick step then he’s gone back. Either way it doesn’t matter as we are not going rb in round 1 it’s looking like defense then the rest of the draft finishing the offense. I see DE in 1 TE in 2 then Mack in 3 then WR in 4.

  51. R.O. Says:

“Mock Drafts are guesses at best”? I think you can definitively say they are GUESSES…

  52. Armando Says:

    Deenice07 Says:
The 👀’s don’t lie, Mixon is the best RB in this draft!

    Your blind.

  53. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    @ Joeypoppems over

  54. Bobby M. Says:

Hoping for McCaffrey or the TE from Miami…..OR….a defensive tackle. McCoy’s days are numbered, he has come out and admitted so. My guess is he’s been made aware that his position is one in focus to start grooming a replacement if the right type of talent falls in their laps.

  55. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Comparing Cmac to Sims is even more ridiculous than comparing Sameje Perine to Quizz. But you just keep on keeping on Ndog.

  56. 813bucboi Says:

actually, we do need a linebacker….we have zero depth behind kwon and LVD…I think jarred davis is a better player than Reddick and is just as versatile…he can play all 3 linebacker positions, stuff the run in 43 base and rush the passer from 34….he would never have to come off the field….most mocks have him going to the raiders chiefs or Texans….

I hope we trade down to the mid late twenties and grab a player that could play 4 positions….GO BUCS!!!!

  57. MrNolesAllDay Says:

Mixon will be a bust, so will OJ Howard. Cook @ 19. Lets go. I’m a Nole first, and let me say this some of y’all Bucs fans are some pansies/clowns. Y’all have been one of the sorriest teams in the NFL in the last decade. But you have expert fans that know what it takes to win?! Lol! Stop with the nonsense. Actually I hate that my guy Jameis got drafted to y’all ungrateful know it alls. Y’all drug his (Jaboo)name through the mud the whole draft process. Now he’s here for a couple years and y’all just LOVE HIM! Y’all don’t know what a winning team needs/wants . Just be fans y’all are not experts and to bash a 20yr old that you don’t know . Shame shame shame

  58. Joeypoppems Says:

Yet you kniw OJ and Mixon will bust…. Ironic

  59. LakeLandBuc Says:

I wouldn’t have a problem with the Bucs drafting Dalvin Cook. Even though I wanted other players, Cook would be a solid pick.

  60. Mo_Downs Says:

    DE Bennett
    BPA – TE
    WR Chris Godwin
    BPA – SS

Joe Mixon will be on the Cover of Madden 19’…in a Bucs uniform..holding the Lombardi Trophy….??

  61. stanglassman Says:

Joe is right they’re looking for a Sam who can put their hand in the dirt and get after the Qb on passing downs but I don’t think it’s Reddick. Look for them to draft Samuel Ebukam out of E. Washington in the 5/6th round to fill this need.

  62. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    Mr.NolesAllday

Lol thanks for the laughs. The idea that fans have thr slightest impact on how a team is built is a straight up Joke.

And while there were many ignorant Sob’s who were against drafting Jameis, many of us have loved him right from ths start.

One last thing, if you care so little about thr Bucs, then wtf are you doing here boy?

  63. TampaBay AllDay Says:

@ Mr noles, you’re a disgrace to the name AllDay. Kick rocks.

  64. Ramblingman Says:

Said it before – it’s all a guessing game and as long as you see the mocks like that, they really are not harmful. It’s good fodder to stir up interest. Plus I believe the smarter GMs use them as tools to put out a lot of bad information and misdirection in order to gain an edge.

Funniest part is watching the fans who sit in their chairs and declare they above all others know who will be drafted by X team in the 6th round. Yeah, if you have that much knowledge, you should really be playing the stocks.

I have my list of 6-8 players I would like to see the Bucs go after in the first 2-3 rounds. If they get a couple of them, great. If they don’t, we’ll see who they got. I know Licht is a whole lot smarter than I am on these matters, and he has the staff working on them 24/7.

No matter who they pick this weekend, go Bucs.

  65. ndog Says:

For me good friend Blake yes McCaffrey and Sims have a similar body type and testing times. See below:

    Height: McCaffrey:5’11, Sims: 6’0
    Weight: McCaffrey: 202, Sims: 211
    Combine 40 time: McCaffrey: 4.48 Sims: 4.48

So like I said the same size (actually McCaffrey is smaller which is not good) and the exact same speed. Now McCaffrey has better vision and cutting ability but my point was that he will get beat up if used as a every down back and that all he will ever be is a specialty back, just like Sims.

  66. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Ok so just because they are similar sizes that means they are similar caliber players?

Shoot I guess that makes Johnny 8Ball Fran Tarkenton.

Weak af arguments as per usual.

  67. ndog Says:

Again I never said same caliber, I said he must be used the same way due to their size and likelihood of getting beat up. In fact I said McCaffrey is better, see below:
