It’s Tight End O.J. Howard In Round 1

April 27th, 2017

Dirk Koetter gets his man!!

Weapons for Winston?

How bout a big, fast, powerful, versatile, rare and freakish weapon!!

Make zero mistake, Bucs fans. Dirk Koetter is dancing and singing and waving his self-proclaimed big MF stick right now.

Howard is a beast, a rare complete and dangerous tight end prospect.

Tonight on the Buccaneers Radio Network, ex-Bucs tight end Dave Moore was giddy talking about the matchup nightmare Howard would be in the Bucs’ offense.

Howard is a monster, 6-5, 251 pounds with 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash out of the University of Alabama.

Think Austin Seferian-Jackwagon with more speed, power, desire and the right attitude from the neck up.

Move over Luke Stocker, now the Bucs can roll out two tight ends with Cameron Brate, the NFL touchdowns leader at tight end last year. and Howard.

Who the hell needs a running game with this kind of juice??

Joe is amped! #WeaponsForWinston is no longer a dream.

Here’s the upside scouting report on Howard from NFL.com. Dare to dream, Bucs fans!!!

STRENGTHS

Exceptionally gifted athlete. Has long arms and massive hands for his position. Tremendous acceleration into his routes. Has tools to torment defenses on second and third level. Play speed resembles a wide receiver’s when the ball is in the air. Linebackers have no shot against him in space. Can turn a short throw into a long gain. Light on his feet and smooth out of his breaks. Easy separator who creates instant throwing windows when he hits the gas. Natural pass catcher who plucks it away from his body. Can adjust to poorly thrown balls and secure contested catches. Shows no lack of toughness over the middle. Can be lined up all over the field. Monster championship game in 2015 season revealed true potential. Has elite ceiling as playmaker. Lands his hands inside the frame as a blocker. Operates with wide base and attempts to snap hips into his block.

Did anyone make that bet with nos that we’re taking dalvin in first round?

  10. zwh99 Says:

    Uh oh wheres nosbos?

  11. The Anomaly Says:

good pick at a huge need

  12. alamba78 Says:

Heck yea! I was a little surprised Adoree’ went one spot before. I expected a play for him in the 2nd for the Bucs. Oh well. The Juice is gonna be Gronk 2.0 without being a dork off the field. RB or S in Round 2!

  13. Rich Says:

Joke, no DE or Rb. He better be a stud.

  14. BurgDweller Says:

Good pick. Starting to wonder if Cook will even go in the first round now?

  15. Tom Edrington Says:

Awesome player, the real deal, complete package!

  16. gotbbucs Says:

Value was just too good to pass on.

  17. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I was hoping for Dalvin…still have time to get an RB…but I’m very happy with OJ if not Dalvin. Another generational player with the potential to become All Pro.

As long as we get the right guys I”m not obsessing on position. OJ is certainly from the group of “right guys”.

  18. Bird Says:

Wow. Wow. Wow. This kid was top 10. This offense will be sick. They can still get running back or safety. A + grade for day 1

  19. DrHoagy Says:

He blocks, he catches, he is fast enough to play slot and create matchup nightmares. What’s not to like?

  20. FireDaCannons Says:

Awesome! Can’t believe he fell to us. I was scared we were going to take a RB, but follow the Licht, he didn’t waste any time taking advantage of the great scenario

  21. The other Mike Johnson Says:

Wow, I’m thrilled. Cook may be there in the 2nd. OJ is a long term difference maker.

  22. JimmyJack Says:

All’s that’s gotta happen is for Jamie’s to gel with this guy and utilize his skill. This TE could be our cog on offense and is so much more appealing then Cook

  23. AceofAerospace Says:

I would have cheered it, but I am soooo glad we didn’t draft a RB in the first round. Great pick Bucs.

  24. Maxx Says:

    All in on this pick!!
    RB later-

  25. mark2001 Says:

Cook would have been a nice pick…but some think that OJ is one of the best players in this draft. How can you knock Licht for picking him? And notice.. we didn’t wait to turn in the pick…it was an easy decision at that point.

  26. Howard Returns Says:

    Classy kid.

Speak softly…AND CARRY A BIG STICK!!

  27. Ed Says:

    Great, Great pick

  28. tdtb2015 Says:

AWESOME!!! WE are going to own the NFC SOUTH!!!!!!!

    GOOD JOB LICHT!!!!!!!!!

  29. IWantedCook Says:

Why would we pass on Cook? Upset but also very happy man.

  30. Bucfan951 Says:

    So effing happy!!!

  31. LargoBuc Says:

I cant beleive the best offensive player in the draft fell right in our lap! This feels too good to be true!

  32. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Never saw a scenario where we would get Howard. Unbelievable pick!!! Go Bucs!!!

  33. BucTrooper Says:

This reminds me of the year when Steven Jackson fell to us but we ended up taking Michael Clayton instead.

  34. Buc4life Says:

Absolutely love this pick!!! Our offense will be unstoppable. Go bucs

  35. Bucsalltheway Says:

Dalvin cook will be gone by 2nd round…new England might take them since they been interested in rb’s prior to the draft

  36. Dewey Selmon Says:

Cut Stocker so OJ can have #88

  37. unbelievable Says:

    St. Pete-

There’s still plenty of good running backs we can get. OJ is an all-around TE coming out of college, that’s hard to find.

Can’t believe he fell to us! Yes!!!!

  38. Trubucfan22 Says:

Love it! I bet nosbos, i mean PRINCESS, is crying in his pillow right about now.

  39. Howard Returns Says:

Joes server is glowing white hot tonight!

  40. Nano Says:

    So much for Cook
RB ARE LIKE STRIPPERS DIME A DOZEN

  41. Trubucfan22 Says:

Fyi NE doesnt have a first or second round pick.

  42. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Anybody got NOSBOS’s phone number? He’s a suicide risk.

  43. richardtyson Says:

I think i just peed in my pants a little bit.

  44. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Told all you FSU and cook Homers that cook would be drafted by the bucs in the 1st rd….eat crow!

    That being said

I simply cannot believe OJ is a buc….. this offense will one of the best in the NFL

    OJ is so damn good……

  45. firethecannons Says:

awesome pick!!!!!!!!!!!!! cannot fokng believe he fell to us at #19 I knew Jason would pull the trigger–we did not even trade up and lose picks–perfect–now somehow maybe we could get Dalvin –not sure how but it would be awesome!

  46. mike10 Says:

    This guy is a freak!!

Celebrate Bucs fans, this boy fell in our laps.

  47. DoNUTS Says:

Solid pick. RB in round 2.

  48. Kstoges Says:

    NOOOOSSS BOOOSSSS AHAHAAHAHAHA

  49. Rich Says:

Great pick. Dominant tight end. Running backs are a dime a dozen. FSU homers aren’t objective. Cook has had 3 shoulder surgeries and is Cadillac Williams waiting to happen again. Love the pick.

  50. JP4 Says:

What is it with you Joes and Cook? Is is a brain infection? Bucs have much bigger concerns than RB to spend a valuable 2nd round pick on.

Plenty of good RBs will be there in 3rd, 4th or even 5th round.
Licht has bigger fish to fry.

  51. Blake_bucsfan Says:

YOU SAID IT COULDN’T BE DONE JOE (LEE), YOU SAID IT SHOULDN’T HAPPEN JOE (LEE)!

GUESS JASON LICHT HATES CAM BRATE JOE (LEE)!

BUCS GOT THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE THROUGH A MIRACLECAST DOWN ON US LOWLY SERVANTS FROM THE DIVINE!

AMAZING NIGHT! AMAZING PICK! AMAZING ARTICLE JOE (STEVE)!

    MAY GOD BLESS US ALL!

  52. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Not very happy right now… There were a lot better options still on the board. And not really sure why we picked a TE when that was definitely not a need here…

  53. duthsty rhothdes Says:

great pick licht now get mixon, caleb brantley, ryan anderson, gareon conley and drop the mic licht

  54. Ghostofschiano Says:

How about the flip side joe –

    Weaknesses
Will need more muscle and mass to be an in-line blocker as a pro. Appears passive. Doesn’t have the field demeanor of most Alabama players. Needs better hand strength to sustain his blocks. Can do better job of working feet into position after contact. Needs urgency in his routes to tilt defenders and get them guessing. Needs to show more elusiveness after the catch. Saw playing time diminish from junior to senior season. Explosive talent who doesn’t make enough explosive plays. Scheme creates some wide-open deep-ball catches at time. Scouts question his competitive nature.

    ASJ redux

  55. Waterboy Says:

    Great pick!

  56. JimmyJack Says:

Ok so great the guy fell to us. Now he better be ready to hit the weights and show up on Gameday. The celebration is over!!!!!

  57. Luke Says:

No surprise here. D was the need. No clue again 9-7 best front office sucks

  58. Dewey Selmon Says:

when it is all said and done we have the best qb, best wr, and best te in team history.

  59. Eric Says:

Wanted Cook, but this guy is a beast. Seems to be loaded with talent and only issue is desire.

Perhaps Jameis can get it out of him.

  60. Tval Says:

Lmao @ duusty w the HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  61. Brett Says:

Crazy good pick. Need a RB by Round 3 if you want to count on him, IMHO. If the plan is to keep Martin at a reduced salary, I could live w/o drafting a rb.

  62. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

I’m a Nole thru and thru, but this was the correct pick. Mixon might be there or Foreman. I’m not mad at it at all

  63. JimmyJack Says:

If you don’t think TE was a need in Tampa then look again

  64. Tval Says:

Thats it, Eric. Jameis gets it out of all of em. Imagine this guy motivated

  65. Jason Says:

Hawaiian, I also am blown away Howard was there, wow!!!!!

  66. Tackleblockwin Says:

No idea how he fell to us. Wooo hoo!

  67. Supersam Says:

    Omg I’m sooooo happy!!! Yes!!!!!

  68. Bucsjunkie Says:

Let’s not forget we have a history of trading back into the 1st round… So happy with this pick btw!

  69. BuccanChris Says:

Jamie’s better get that accuracy straight. No more excuses. Yo Ho Ho

  70. Ghostofschiano Says:

    @Bucsanthem

    See this –

Did you read that? He’s soft, like asj

  71. Captain BucHeart Says:

Phenomenal pick! Such a value pick so pumped!

  72. Pickgrin Says:

This is AMAZING! I pined for OJ Howard for the Bucs probably more than any other single player – but it just felt like we had no chance at him as the draft approached.

    A+++ 1st round pick art #19

This dude is truly a generational talent at TE. He was top 5 on a bunch of boards and top 10 on everyone’s board. And we got him at 19. Steal of the 1st round!!

  73. Trubucfan22 Says:

OJ was the best player available, by a lot. He is a top 10 talent that we got at 19. Great pick. And if weapons for winston isn’t a need, then you need to watch some film. I can’t wait to see the production we get out if 2 TE sets. It’s our bread and butter and no one will do it better than the Bucs with the talent we have.

  74. Matt B Says:

Astounded we got him so late! Amazing drafting! I started to sweat around pick 17 because I really wanted him. I wonder if all that adoree hoopla was
to trick Tennessee into taking him. This guy has the potential to be a perennial pro bowler!!!

  75. Bucski89 Says:

Gonzales2point0#GZ2.0 …complete upgrade, No disrespect for with the one we have #2tights set . Give me U Rhino!!

  76. duthsty rhothdes Says:

The guy played on team wout a qb that was a run first offense, he blocked 75% of time, then on 3rd down and in biggest games he was biggest star, great pick

  77. Destinjohnny Says:

    Roll tide!!!!

  78. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

I’m so excited right now!! Go Bucs !! Let’s trade up and grab Cook now!!

  79. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    PHEW!!!
I’ve been saying for months that good teams simply do not draft RBs in the first round. So glad Licht came from the school of Bellicjhck and gets this. go bucs!!

  80. NJBucsFan Says:

Where is NOS? I’ve looked on every story

  81. JimmyJack Says:

I 2nd that tru22. TE sets are our bread and butter

  82. King C Says:

Anybody comparing ASJ to OJ Howard should not be taken seriously

  83. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Ghostofschiano

    Every draft pick has flaws

The fact that he can actually BLOCK and be amazingly fast and has good hands and body control is amazing

I’m truly thrilled with this pick

  84. Jeagan1999 Says:

Love it! Wanted him all along….never thought he would fall to 19!

  85. Pickgrin Says:

NOS BOS – you were right and I was wrong – Dalvin Cook was on the board at #19….

NOS BOS??? Hmmmm I guess we won’t be hearing from you for while…

  86. JimmyJack Says:

I was liking the TE from Miami…….but this will do. Yes this will do for now.

  87. Michael Duggan Says:

You have got to be kidding me. The best TE talent in the draft fell in our lap at 19 and we have complaints? This guy will be a stud! Sometimes I don’t get Bucs fans?

  88. Bucski89 Says:

Koetter completely revived Gonzale’so G.O.A.T. years, when he was the O.C. in dirty birdtown

  89. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I’m a big Dalvin fan. I’m not a fan of drafting a RB high though, but if he had been the pick I would get it. If there’s no blue chip dl avail, this was the right pick. Team Licht.

Trade into the second for Dalvin

  90. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    No no no

NEVER DRAFT A RB IN THE 1ST RD PERIOD!!!!

  91. Ateonetree Says:

Oj Howard will be our Tony Gonzalez

  92. Pickgrin Says:

    Howard = 6’6″ – 250 lbs – runs a 4.5 – 40… and he can block like a mofo. Is that sick or what?

  93. Cometowin2 Says:

Called it. Couldn’t be happier. Get a RB next and then a fast receiver.

  94. Lord Corn Says:

Hell yeah now get Cook R2 please gods haha

  95. Bucski89 Says:

Image what’s he’s going to do now, you Koetter is wetting his bed dreaming about this line up

  96. Rich Says:

so we got 2 TE’s. Big deal. Are we gonna be able to run the ball? Are we gonna get after the qb yet?

  97. Ndog Says:

I am still shocked he was there, wonderful fit. Wonderful pick now we need a de, receiver and of course runningback.

  98. mark2001 Says:

Ghost… He was only ranked among the top picks in the draft…No one is a finished product. Did you hear what Sapp said about the number 1 pick? The fact is that the draft is a gamble…but better bet on a guy of this talent and potential than a someone with less talent and character questions…wouldn’t you agree?

  99. Ateonetree Says:

Our redzone offense should be lethal

  100. Buc1987 Says:

“Who the hell needs a running game with this kind of juice??”

    Joe…I’m freaking giddy right now.

  101. $acbuc$ Says:

Good job Jason! Dunkaneers are back.. Go get Vjax

  102. JimmyJack Says:

I betcha Jamies will be calling OJ promptly at 6:30am

  103. LargoBuc Says:

    GhostofSchiano

You dont play under Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa for four years without being competetive.

  104. King C Says:

    Oh my … OJ HOWARD is 6 ft 6, 250 and runs a 40 in 4.51.
    Unbelievable!
We have not seen a talent like this in many years

  105. Pelbuc Says:

Solid pick! Can’t believe he fell to BUCS. I’m stoked!

  106. Bucsalltheway Says:

I seen lol..maybe cook won’t get drafted in first round. Actually he may go to the browns

  107. JimmyJack Says:

Think you can put RB on the backburner now and get some Beef for the D.

  108. MadMax Says:

    MR. LICHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU THE MAN!!!!!!!

But seriously, how in the heck did he drop to us? Unreal!!

Def BPA and a NEED!!!!!! The football Gods are smiling on us I guess.

  109. rrsrq Says:

    @Pick,

I have been right there with you just did not think he would be there. Basically getting a guy who can block in the running game, can catch and run, since the national championship ended, i have made the argument. I remember when Brate went down last year with a back injury, the team had nothing

  110. Arealbucfan Says:

You will all hate this pick when Dalvin is ROTY

  111. Trubucfan22 Says:

I think he might be faster than mike Evans. Lol

And he absolutely helps the run game. He can block! do you think a RB can do it all by himself? This guy is setting the edge for whoever runs the ball for us next season. There is no doubt he helps the run game.

  112. Vittaveve Says:

Unbelivable!!!! at 19 wow just wow..there are no weaknesses. we got a stud

  113. Bucamania Says:

AMAZING pick. Evans and DJax on the outside OJ up the middle. Good luck defense!

  114. Trubucfan22 Says:

You mean the dalvin that still hasn’t been drafted? I guess the bucs were stupid just like the other 26 teams. How dare they not draft the god known as Cook!

  115. Arealbucfan Says:

Brate has a good year and is rewarded with being replaced Doug did drugs!!! Adorall!!! It was molly… RB or S should’ve been the pick.. marlon Mack is going on 3 or 4th for a reason!!! Good job asjackhats

  116. Gencoimports Says:

Anybody who doesn’t love this pick is either a deranged homer or knows nothing about football. Howard has the potential of easily being the best TE this frannchise has ever had.

With this pick, we can wait on picking a WR until late. Main focus tomorrow should be on defense.

  117. Arealbucfan Says:

Yea I hope y’all and you’re crack head running back have a great year

  118. Ndog Says:

The Falong just got a beast. I love this kid. Dang it.

  119. Ndog Says:

Why the hate towards Cook? We had to take the best tight end in the draft at 19 thats no knock on Dalvin. Just chill cause he might still end up being our running back.

  120. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Orange Juice gonna sell out in Tampa stores tonight! If we get Cook call the state police there’s gonna be a riot!

  121. EA Says:

I applaud the organization for picking the best player on their board.

  122. SOEbuc Says:

OMG!!!!! So hyped he dropped to us. This was a top 12 guy. He is such a monster!!! ME13, DJax, OJ Howard, Brate, Hump!!!!!!!! And possibly another early round receiver. Soooooo hyped about this core!!!

  123. Ndog Says:

You morons saying they would never draft a running back in the first are lost. This pick had nothing to do with that it is all about something amazing happening to us so just be happy we got lucky.

  124. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    @GhostofSchiano

It’s abundantly clear that you, and whoever wrote that, have never watched one shred of gametape from this kid’s senior year.

He blocks his A$$ off. And routinely sprung running backs and receivers free for big gains and touchdowns on runs and screens.

    Best TE prospect in years.

I didn’t think it was possible for him to fall to us. I don’t think anyone did. But thank the lord, we have all witnessed a Miracle.

    JUICE!

    Welcome to Tampa, Mr. Howard.

  125. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

ArealBucsfan don’t get it twisted Stocker will be the one replaced

  126. Arealbucfan Says:

What’s he gonna spring a block for a cab driver this year??? We need a running back for him to help a running back

  127. Arealbucfan Says:

Yea I know stocker will be replaced but I don’t trust our running game and our secondary is probably the worst in the league.. never been a fan of Luke like others.. always pulled for dougie until we found out what a waste of talent the guy is.. we better move quick if we wanna be relevant.. this pick brings us no closer to the super bowl!!!

  128. Bucfan951 Says:

@ghost: you need to google “oj Howard workout video” and see how he flips 45lbs weights and catches them to strengthen his hands

  129. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Watch our inside the 5 tds go up like a big dawg thanks to O J!

  130. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

RealBucsfan Cook, Mixon, Perinne and a number of other backs are still there for the picking so don’t worry we’ll get one

  131. Buccfan37 Says:

I won’t get overhyped about this pick. Someone said he was mostly a blocker, another pointed out his weaknesses. The Bucs must think he is can’t miss. Probably just my hatred of Alabama football oozing out.

  132. Blake_bucsfan Says:

6 rounds of this draft remain ArealBucsfan.

6 rounds of the deepest Rb draft in recent Memory.

We will get a stud Rb in this draft make no mistake about that. Heck we may get 2.

This is a blessing. All of you doubters will come around. Trust me on that. We got a tride and true gamechanger.

  133. Capt.Tim Says:

A great talent- unbelievable that he dropped to us!!
Jameis LOVES TEs. Both in college, and as a pro.
Kotter said repeatedly that he wanted to run more 2 TE sets.
Done!!! We have two great TEs!
Jameis is at his best, throwing the slants and crossing patterns in the middle of the field!
Man, does he have options there now!

We have two Wrs, and two TEs, that defenses cant cover!
Joes right. Who needs a Rb!! Lol

Now- hope we find a DE!

  134. Jdr Says:

Ha ha… wdae hu g up on me this morning when i said the bucs would fake hkward over cook. Rb from texas should be our next pick

  135. Red86 Says:

Nice!!! Zay Jones in the 2nd please. #MoreWeaponForJameis

  136. biff barker Says:

Nice add Licht. Now go and scrape Koetter off the ceiling.

BPA, safe pick too. I wanted to trade down to stock picks but you cant squander this kind of opportunity. Still time to find a DE and RB.

  137. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Blake… Screw these trolls. So many new posters tonight. All idiots! Shame about Nos Bos though. Should’ve manned up
No excuses for being off the grid of all days today

  138. Pa Privateer Says:

    #weaponsforwinston nuff said

  139. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Great pick. Hopefully that shuts up nosbos. 2nd round will be safety I bet.

  140. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Would be ecstatic if budda baker drops to us in the second round.

  141. Arealbucfan Says:

Hope he’s not AS GOOD as Hargreaves was supposed to be… this kid better be the next gronkowski or it’s a waste… time will tell… we passed on something great… if you think Cook was. A bum you must think Dunn was too… meanwhile conte allows another TD and mr Martin just averaged .02 yards for 2017 but we O.J. Howard did half as good as Cam Brate.. this kid better be the golden ticket

  142. ShutTheBucUp Says:

There were nasty edge rushers still on the board and we go… Tight End? Idiocy. If you think this guy is going to put the Bucs over the hump then you’re on crack. #rememberASJ

  143. ShutTheBucUp Says:

What are we doing next round? Trading up for a long snapper?

  144. NFLNut Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stumped for O.J. right from the start and explained that Jameis loves 2-TE sets and that OJ Howard would be the best possible pick as he is a true 3-down TE that never needs to come of the field … however I didn’t actually think he would still be on the board at #19 as the chatter was he could go high as #4 or at the lowest #10.

OJ is the type of player that could be with Jameis for the next 10+ years, have a HOF career and be one of the best TE’s to ever play the game!

    I AM STOKED!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, I will say that if we get Cook or JOE MIXON, we could have the scariest, most talented, most dynamic and flat-out BEST group of 5 skill players in the entire NFL.

Mike Evans and D-Jax on the outside with OJ and Brate on the line and either Cook or Mixon in the backfield … NO DEFENSE COULD MATCH UP WITH THAT … that would be sick!!!!!

  145. Pit Says:

Wow just wow. That’s just awesome. I don’t even have word to describe this. It’s just amazing.

  146. Buccsfan76 Says:

    @Dewey Selmon

    LOLOLOL!
