Major (Hard Knocks?) Announcement Tomorrow

April 18th, 2017

America’s Quarterback gets the stage

Time to call the dreaded cable company.

This time it might be worth the hold time. It seems your beloved Buccaneers will be the featured NFL team on HBO’s Hard Knocks this summer.

It’s a dream come true for hardcore Bucs fans, a chance to see behind the curtain — a little bit — and experience the kind of thing that would rarely show up on Buccaneers.com.

Hard Knocks is the training-camp reality show that installs a bunch of cameras and microphones all over the place and cobbles it together into a mini, weekly documentary about the team and the rigors of preseason happenings.

Distraction? Of course it is. But it shouldn’t be one that affects play once real football starts — or even preseason football. Plenty of Hard Knocks teams have made the playoffs. Also, and most important, Bucs officials are permitted to use their discretion and prevent something from making the final cut and hitting the airwaves.

So, for example, say a linebacker rips Gerald McCoy in a linebackers-only meeting, Bucs officials reviewing the film can have that cut so it never circulates.

Joe is assuming that’s the giant scheduled announcement at One Buc Palace tomorrow in their fancy, big auditorium. What else could it be?

“Joe is assuming that’s the giant scheduled announcement at One Buc Palace tomorrow in their fancy, big auditorium. What else could it be?”

It could be the signing of Peterson I suppose…lol. Wouldn’t that be mean?

  4. Wausa Says:

Hard Knocks with Jameis, Mike, Dalvin, Doug, Ali and Desean

    Should be fun!

  5. greg Says:

I know that I am in the minority here…but I really don’t see how this helps the only thing that matters..wins. Nothing good can come out of this that I can see. If you win enough…you get more exposure. If you win enough, you sell more jerseys. If you win enough, everyone will put Tampa Bay on the map. You want to become more relevant…just win enough.

  6. ARGH_M8E Says:

    BOOM!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Gencoimports Says:

If you have Amazon Prime on your Smart TV, DVR or Blu-Ray player, you can pay $15 a month for HBO and get everything from that including Hard Knocks.

  8. NJBucsFan Says:

How boring would it be if Lovie was still here???

  9. D-Rome Says:

Good! I’m glad the Bucs are going to be featured. It won’t be a distraction.

  20. unbelievable Says:

I’ve been saying this last week. HBO’s Vice had a feature on college athletics and ended with a long segment on Peyton Barber, following him from the draft process through the season with the Bucs.

Just too big of a coincidence… Of all the college players and all the NFL teams they could have chose, it just happened to be the Bucs? I think not. The Bucs will definitely be on Hard Knocks.

  21. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Djax, Jameis, Ayers, Rudy Humphries dominate and then some training camp body will be the feature….

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

unbelievable GREAT POINT……there is a feature story then for hard knocks

  23. unbelievable Says:

  35. Kobe Faker Says:

To celebrate HBO Hard Knocks announcement, GMC Is heading toward church to perform a confessional in front of a Priest

  36. ARGH_M8E Says:

This is soooooooooo the year to do it. Get it out of the way, and we get spoon fed extra BUCS entertainment. I’m stoked. F*ckn cool! The joes, Ira, Justin etc……. Must b looking for a clean pair of undies right about now, HA!!!!! Fact.

  37. DallasBuc Says:

Make no mistake. This will be a heavy distraction, not just for the players but the coaches too. This means the focus will not be 100% on becoming great because there are HK camera crews in the offices and meeting rooms as well as the locker rooms and practice fields. This is a major let down if you are hopeful your favorite football team will take a big step forward this year. Not that it can’t happen in spite of but this is simply an unnecessary distraction. The only solace I take in it is that Koetter, Smitty and Hayes have all been through it before and should be able to avoid a few of the pitfalls they know to expect. The entertainment value does not outweigh the risk for me and am thus very disappointed.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah unbelievable, that was the joke.

    Wow….

  39. DallasBuc Says:

AguaOh,no is going to make our human bobblehead GM look very this offseason and it will be teased out in front of the entire nation. Yikes!

  40. DallasBuc Says:

    “…very *foolish*”

  41. Rod Munch Says:

The only distraction I’m worried about is that Bucs schedule – it’s hard to find even 9 wins on it. Outside of a couple of creampuffs their schedule is pretty stacked. Also I think Carolina is way back this season – and Brees is still in NO so they’re not going away quite yet. I guess Winston won’t be getting that easiest schedule in the league like Mariota has had since they came into the league.

  42. ARGH_M8E Says:

    Very what?^

  43. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “So, for example, say a linebacker rips Gerald McCoy in a linebackers-only meeting, Bucs officials reviewing the film can have that cut so it never circulates.” Kind of a cheap shot Joe. For starters, Bucs LBs have too much class to take that route. But beyond that, all the LBs know that GMC is one of the better DTs in the league & that they’re better off with him than without him. Plus I’ve seen our LBs, especially Kwon, taken out of plays far more than I’ve seen that happen to GMC.
“Cheap shot?” LOL. It’s an example. Not a stretch to say a linebacker might look at practice film and say WTF on what any D-tackle might be doing on a given play.–Joe

  44. ARGH_M8E Says:

Got ya Dallas, but sooooooo what?!? This is awesome on so many levels. I too originally felt what you’re feeling but I think this is far from a BAD thing. Jameis will change everyone outside of the TB’s opion on him. Sheeeeeeeeee-it… Say if we draft MIXON, just sayin, but if he shows the world how he’s matured and uses his 2nd chance wisely. Bonus. Or the pessimist will look at it completely different, idk… America def gives 2nd chances, let’s see.

  45. IsrBuc Says:

A bucs fan from Israel here- will it be available on gamepass?
    thanks

  46. Kobe Faker Says:

*Now with HardKnocks, Joe Mixon will be definitely drafted in the second round if he is available for Tampa

**Dont kid yourselves. NFL wants Joe Mixon on Hard knocks too

“Its been reported Jenna Laine, Casey Philips, Scott Smith and Peter Schrager are at International Plaza mall feveriously buying any and all lipstick and makeup”

  47. DallasBuc Says:

Sadly, chances of us drop dramatically with this news.
I want winning football in this town not publicity stunts to line the pockets of the NFL.

  48. DallasBuc Says:

“…chances of us *drafting Mixon* drop dramatically…”

  49. feelthepewterpower Says:

Could it be the ring of honor announcement?

  50. DallasBuc Says:

IsrBuc- don’t think so since it is HBO production. I’m sure you get HBO out there and can definitely get HBOGO app.

  51. Couch Fan Says:

Some people just cant be positive no matter what. As for me, I believe this is the year that Jameis takes this team to the playoffs and stays there for many years to come. And it all starts on Hard Knocks. Cant Wait!! GO BUCS!!!

  52. Steven007 Says:

@Rod – Cam Newton had offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder. And he didn’t have it right after the season; he waited a bit for some reason. He’s iffy to be 100% for game one in the regular season and will obviously be limited in training camp and preseason.

As for Hard Knocks, as a Bucs fan it’s hard not to be excited to get so much more pub on our favorite team. I think the “distraction” element is overrated. Obviously NOT being on Hard Knocks seems to have kept us out of the playoffs, ha-ha, so perhaps being on it will help.

  53. $acbuc$ Says:

Correct me but I don’t think any teams that was on Hard Knock ever made the playoffs. I’m gonna love it but I still think it will be a huge distraction for the younger generation. These Facebook Instagram Social Media babies might not be professional as they would be with cameras on them 24-7.

  54. Steven007 Says:

$ac, a few have made the playoffs.

  55. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I can’t wait! I’ve never seen hard knocks before but I will this year!

  56. Eric Says:

Hopefully our team is not so mentally weak that they allow this to bother them. After all these pro teams play every game on tv.

  57. Broy34 Says:

Bengals won their division. Purely coincidence. Means absolutely nothing. One game in nobody thinks about hard knocks

  58. JabooBuc Says:

Wow! For once I actually agree with DallasBuc. Not thrilled with this at all. Do not kid yourselves. This is a distraction in the first order.

  59. Gencoimports Says:

This might be a little embarrassing for some if this announcement is the Bucs’ 2017 Ring of Honor inductee instead.

  60. Pickgrin Says:

This is gonna be awesome. Jameis will truly become “America’s Quarterback” after the whole country gets an up close and personal look at who he really is week in and week out for the duration of the show.

Bucs fans love Jameis and deservedly so. He’s a stellar human being – especially for a 23 year old – and he has demonstrated that day in and day out for 2 straight years here in Tampa Bay. He lives, eats and breathes football. Winston’s love for the game and his burning (searing) desire to win no matter what is truly infectious. And beyond all that – the dude is a flat out stud QB. This is what he was born to do. And he seems to be loving every minute of it all.

Now the world gets to see what Jameis is really like – up close and personal. Compelling TV indeed. Get ready to fall in love with Jameis Winston America.

This is the best thing that could have happened for Jameis. The perfect opportunity for him to win over millions of new fans just by showing up to work and being himself. The easy opportunity to erase all negative associations about him in uninformed people’s minds that were based on nothing more than the media’s previous all out assault on his character due to the false accusation by the cleatchaser.

The Joes are geniuses. Time to dust off that “Americas Quarterback” IP address they bought for a couple bucks 2 years ago – push the title even harder than ever and prepare for some traffic and additional ad revenue…

  61. Buc1987 Says:

Has any team reached the SB while being on Hard Knocks?

If the answer is no, then my answer is no to Hard Knocks.

  62. Gencoimports Says:

Buc1987, one of the rules has been playoff teams from the previous season are excluded from Hard Knocks. So, that would kind of stack the deck against a SB appearance the same season.

But let the Bucs be the first. They were 9-7 last year and most teams on Hard Knocks were losers the year before.

  63. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Well I know nobody cares but I prefer them not be on hard knocks. It’s a distraction we don’t need as a young team trying to make a jump to the playoffs. So if we come out and go 7-9 or 8-8 will everyone blame Hard knocks? Who knows or cares it will be to darn late! It just makes me nervous

  64. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “Rod Munch Says:
    April 18th, 2017 at 3:04 pm
The only distraction I’m worried about is that Bucs schedule – it’s hard to find even 9 wins on it.”

It’s an easier schedule than last year (5th hardest vs about average this year).

Bring on hard knocks. We’ll be the first team to win a SB after it f*ck it lol

Also there is not a correlation to hard knocks negatively or positively effecting a team statistically over time – I ran the #’s on it but forgot which article it was in

  65. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Dylan Krempel Says
“it was just announced via bleacher report. no need to wait until tomorrow, order today!!!”

Actually, they used PR as a source, and PR said “it is believed”, not that it was confirmed.

For all we know, the Bucs could have signed Adrian Peterson and that is what its about.

But I think we all are pretty certain it’s Hard Knocks.

  66. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Buc1987 Says
“Has any team reached the SB while being on Hard Knocks?

If the answer is no, then my answer is no to Hard Knocks.”

What’s done is done, if this is what it is about. So will you avoid watching the program as a form of protest?

  67. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

For those saying it is a distraction, consider this: The show is filmed during Training Camp, not during the regular season. So how is it a distraction exactly? Will players suddenly forget how to play underwear football? Will Noah Spence forget how to tackle?

Will Mike Evans forget how to catch a ball?

What forms will these distractions take exactly?

  68. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, there’s a first time for everything. I’m so excited for this season. We finally have a QB that we have high hopes for and we have stockpiled talent throughout this team starting with the 2014 draft. As long as we keep drafting well we should be contenders for the next 12-15 years. It’s time for Bucs fans to expect to win every week like Pats and Packers fans do. My younger boys are 13 and 10 and I’m glad they are old enough to get to enjoy this winning run that we are about to go on!

  69. DallasBuc Says:

Bonzai- the coaches and players will augment their behavior in some way every time there is a HK camera around. That by definition is a distraction and while you can’t seem to appreciate the impact that can have in film study, player/coach interactions, locker rooms and practice fields the final result will be a less focused football team at all levels of the organization. It doesn’t mean they can’t overcome the distraction but to deny it’s existence is simply obtuse.

    ———-

Yeah and honestly if any team from hard knocks was to get distracted and let it blow up their season i’d have thought it’d be a Rex Ryan lead team. Revis had a contract holdout that year and Sanchez was a baby QB entering his 2nd year. If anything the show seemed to have a positive effect as that was their best year since 1998 and one of only 3 11+ win seasons in franchise history.

Bucs also only have 3 11+ win seasons in franchise history if you want a depressing stat of the day. Yet we still have haters of the current team after 9 wins with the 5th youngest roster in the NFL facing a top 5 most difficult schedule and with a franchise QB entering his 3rd year.

Hell I’ve seen people come in here spewing blatantly wrong information saying we’re one of the oldest rosters in the league and that we have a harder schedule this year or that run of great defensive performances was just because all those teams “weren’t ready” or some sh1t when all those games were huge and important for the Chiefs/Chargers/Seahawks lol… like has all the losing really made us that delusional that we’re inventing facts to support our negativity?

You Dave and you know it. Commenting on another man’s head movements during his presser yesterday. Those movements look somewhat familiar to you didn’t they. This whole Dave thing, your newest bizarre obsession, has to be the weirdest thing to be so sure of. It’s like the people that think they see mother Mary on toast or think Obama is a secret Kenyan Muslim! You are a strange little man.

Informative and educational.

  82. Spartin Says:

It was a meeting that was posted on Facebook live Joe. I promise I didn’t dream it up. The guys at 98 Rock were given a jersey as well.

  83. Fred E. Buc Says:

This is also big for local media, especially the TBT. Tom Jones will buy his first Bucs cap and T-shirt…and be at One Buc more times in three weeks than he has in 10 years. And he will leave the price tag his T and cap…so he can return it when Hard Knocks and HBO pull out of town and argue that he didn’t really wear and deserves a full refund–from Wal-Mart. Martin Fenally will do a five part series on High School baseball and wonder why it’s not getting any hits. Greg Auman will report any and all camp news…as usual…five hours after it’s on the local networks. Rick Stroud will get a style cut but keep mentioning about how it was where he grew up. Tom Bassinger will write a 5 page statistical analysis on NFL team’s records for the five seasons following knocks…and end with “there’s really nothing conclusive here.” And HBO will wonder why the local pay media is so bad…and instead, cover how fans get their news from JoeBucsFan.com….
