Magic Number 13

April 18th, 2017

Talks career longevity.

As Joe has referenced, Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was brutally honest about himself yesterday at One Buc Palace, and at times seemed depressed.

GMC spoke about how his knees hurt and he seemed every bit the player seeing the end of his playing days in the horizon.

So Joe asked GMC point blank how much gas in the tank does he feel he has, and how many more NFL years does he hope to squeeze out of his body?

“You know what, 99 [Warren Sapp] always told me to chase the ghosts of the game,” GMC said. “That simply means the players that came before you. He has been my measuring stick since I stepped into the league. One, being my favorite player growing up; and two, being a Buccaneer; three, him being one of five first-ballot d-tackles. You know, Hall of Famers.

“So, he played 13 years. So, at minimum, I would like to hit 13. But we will see what happens.”

So by that estimate, GMC is past the halfway mark of his playing days. Drafted in 2010, GMC just finished his seventh season.

Joe will write it again: it is a football atrocity this franchise, the Bucs, has all but p!ssed away the cream of GMC’s career by failing at nearly every attempt to get a double-digit sackmeister of an edge rusher.

Just a flat out disgrace!

Licht should have traded him last year and get a 1st round pick for him while he was thought of as top of his game and if he is now on the downside of his career or is this some passive aggressive nature to feel bad for him and show teh fans the ol gmc wont be as good as he was

  2. Tampa Tony Says:

Majority of that failing falls on your boy Dom dude let Michael Bennett your all and continually swung and missed at the draft

  3. tdtb2015 Says:

Hearing this poor me energy simply reminds me of David complaining after the Tennessee Ready Game!

    WTH is going on here!!!!!

Maybe Licht needs to draft his replacement. Come on GMC. If you want to emulate 99 then stop giving energy to the pain. Use this disconfort to propel you to greater heights.

Do you think 99 experience pain? Did he bring it up in a press conference? Is part of the game. Now is not the time to defeat yourself. Go out there and do what you have to do. Don’t ever let others dictate your state of emotion. You have a brain use it and be your own self. Never give your power away. Take that to the community. Is all in you not in others opinion.

Get some AYERS in YOU! and David needs more Alexander in him.

We are about to bring a trophy in the next two years. Get your head on straight brother!

    Go Bucs!!!

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

tdtb well said on those points….makes you really fired up for the defense and the 2017 season

  5. tmaxcon Says:

sounds like with all the depressed tone and crying about his knees 93 is already setting up for a season on IR. Contradict that with the raw enthusiasm and emotion from Winston, Kwon, Sweezy and others. Who do you want leading your team a group of hungry determined men or a crybaby with excuses. The new bucs are going to be winners. Get rid of this soft clown he’s 12 million could be spent much better on weapons for winston or hell even a toilet paper upgrade in the lockers room would provide more production in 4th qtrs.

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Gmc sounds like just we thot he was ….. soft. I can’t blame the bucs front office for not ” putting talented players” around him. He had talent and even worse doesn’t make them better. We need to cut ties with him

  7. Tnew Says:

So it’s the bucs fault that he isn’t playing at his potential. Ok, so let’s agree to that point. How does trading up to “go get Dalvin Cook” fix this Situation? Let’s be consistent. If Dalvin is there at 19, fine pick him. But then do your best to come back into the late first (in front of Seattle) and pick up Malik McDowell. A Micheal Bennett type that with Jay Hayes (btw that’s the guy we don’t want to waste. Premium coach, give him another premium pick with Noah “breakout season” Spence) could turn into Charles Hayley

  8. tmaxcon Says:

Joe what is an atrocity is your support for the leader of the losing culture. You can not continue to acknowledge the notion of a losing culture yet support and coddle the leader of the losing culture… damn joe at least one of you has to see the damn light by now. between his pregrame speeches and that press conference – my god, this guy is a DUD. Cancer93 is hurting his team with that soft ass defeated mentality.

  9. Walter Says:

Trade him? Cut ties with him??? Y’all are crazy. Our team is better with McCoy than they are without him. That’s something you can’t deny. But go ahead and name a better DT that’s available if you want. This should be funny.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    Walter

the numbers prove otherwise when she is out of the game. mccoy is a career loser and that is undisputed he does not know how to win and his mental weakness is holding this team back.

  11. Walter Says:

I’m still waiting for you’re idea to replace him. Do you have one??

  12. Walter Says:

Also, if you’re going to referred to him as a woman, at least be consistent and do it throughout your entire post.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    walter

who cares who is replacement is. get a special Olympian he will play with more consistency and heart and not make excuses every time he gets a damn boo boo replacement is irrelevant it’s not like his position has won any games or made a difference in over a decade. DT is not a priority position simple as that…

  14. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

What tdtb said. If we ain’t drafting DC sound like we need to be drafting this guys replacement in the first round. Dude not sounding good.

  15. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

D@$! a safety D@!! a DE we need to go get the highest rated DT we can find. And fast.

  16. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

This guy has quickly changed my while draft desire. I still want DC in the 1st. I now want a DT in the 2nd.

  17. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

OMG. This dude sounds defeated. Camp right around corner man😒.

  18. Walter Says:

Really???? That’s your answer, who cares???

Thank god you aren’t in charge, we’d have even more holes on this roster lol

You’re trolling right?? You can’t be serious, a special Olympian?? You think if you plugged in a retard in McCoy’s spot that there wouldn’t be a noticeable difference in our defense?? Come on man, you can’t just get rid of a good player and not have a replacement waiting in the wings, that’s foolish.

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

    Joe, spot on.

This team STILL HASNT GIVEN HIM MUCH HELP.
Ayers is passionate. Also old and small
Gholsten is a run stopper. So is Akeem Spence.
Noah Spence may be something this year. But hes a 6’2, 255# Linebacker.
We draft Sapp- we draft Marcus Jones and some other DE in the first round.
    Then trade for Simione Rice.
    And draft Booger

We never STOPPED throwing Talent around him. And Kept him with Monte Kiffin most of his career. Same with D-line coach.

McCoy has touled in vain, and alone.
You are so right Joe- its a damn crime what they’ve done to him.

That was depressing to watch yesterday. With his talent and work ethic, I bet he expected to be mentioned in the same breath, as the legends of the game.

Instead, hes had to carry a wretched DLine by himself.

And read post by the stupidest people on earth, to top it off( Tmaxipad, Db55, Et Al).

    Id be F**^ing depressed too.

But Licht better find a way to re-energize him- like a youg talented DE for instance. 7 F**king years too late!!

Because, despite what these Morons think
If Gerald McCoy isnt here, and at the top of his Game
Then we can kiss any playoff chances away. McCoy is the only game changer we have on defense. Lavonte has faded into ordinarness.

We wanna see playoffs- then we need an inspired Gerald McCoy. Or it aint gonna happen

  20. bucs_365 Says:

How is he not sounding good nosbos? He just found a new source of motivation. Man, some of you guys are tone deaf. Self-reflection is a good thing.

  21. bucs_365 Says:

tmax is just a GMC hater. You can’t take his McCoy b!tching seriously.

  22. Argie Pugh Says:

So many none football clowns why has 93 made the pro bowl more than any other buc player since he came? He is double teamed on nearly every play! These Madden couch potatoes couldn’t last a day in pop warner

  23. DB55 Says:

    get a special Olympian
    ————
    YOOOOOOOO!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
    I’m 💀

  24. tmaxcon Says:

    bucs_365

i am not a gmc hater I just have higher standards and only care about winning unlike that defeated bum 93.

    walter

i did not use retard you did but now that you mention yes I do believe a retard would be better for the bucs in the long run. mccoy does not know how to win. he is a career loser.

  25. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

365 the part where be says “13 but we’ll see how my body responds”. I’m a fan man One that has grown to respond to that Fameis way. Make believe yo, that’s all we as fans have. If he takes this energy into the lockerroom how can it be plus for a 5th youngest team bro. He quickly diminishing some of my excitement about next season.

  26. Walter Says:

Does anyone have a SERIOUS answer to my question? Otherwise, I can’t really take any of you seriously. If you want him gone so badly, you must’ve had a successor in mind for a while now. Don’t be shy, let’s hear it. 🙂

  27. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Done tho. Won’t be clicking on anymore #93 threads.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

    walter

the point you are missing is two fold a it really does not matter who they put in when’s the last time a dt dominated a game for bucs… draft a guy pick up another teams garbage at cut down down it truly does not matter.

  29. Gencoimports Says:

I agree with Joe that it is a disgrace the Bucs haven’t acquired a double digit sack edge rusher to compliment GMC.

So tell me again why you want the Bucs to waste a No. 1 pick on Cook rather than a DE?

  30. Walter Says:

I think you yourself might be a little retarded if you really believe that hahaha

According to your logic, that means you think that you can play the position better than him, right? I mean, if a retard can play the position better, then surely you and I can do a better job, right?

Don’t run away now, answer this question: do you think that you could play defensive tackle in the NFL at a higher level than Gerald McCoy?

  31. tmaxcon Says:

second part is at least the bucs will have a DT for 4th qtrs

  32. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Walter before I started listening I felt him saying becoming more dominant in the 4th I was geeked but as the threads continue I’m a little concern bro. C mac concluded last season With 2017 will be our year. This guy don’t sound like he believes that.

  33. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

When a professional starts talking about they’re body that is usually a prelude to the end nearing in their minds. We got other young studs on this team man.

  34. martinii Says:

I usually try to avoid these petty arguments, they are so non-productive and demonstrate a level of hate that is disturbing. This is football, Gerald McCoy is a very good player. 5 pro bowls, constant double teams, for the most part he is highly regarded by the analyst and his teammates. I thought his presser showed his concern about self improvement which is refreshing and finally I believe that if the Buc’s surround him with a few better players he has even more upside. I have found in my old age that some people use a cause not as constructive criticism, but as a means of drawing attention to themselves.

  35. Walter Says:

What you’re basically saying is that you would purposely make the team worse just to get rid of a guy you don’t like. That kind of stuff gets coaches fired.

  36. Walter Says:

Not a single one of you have named a replacement that is either equal to or greater than McCoys level of play. That leads me to believe that neither of you have any idea what you would do to adequately replace Gerald McCoy. Until such a time, you’re just blowing hot air.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    You guys are a trip.

Newsflash…most players feel pain all the time, especially linemen. It takes a toll. They just learn to play through it.

McCoy was just saying he’s in the second half of his career and wants a championship, even if he has to cram it down teammates throats. He’s just saying it in a polite way.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And he did not look depressed. He look somber. There is a difference. Somber means he is ready to change things. And not just about himself.

He;s determined to drawn the best out of the entire defense.

  39. Steven007 Says:

Walter/martini – well said. Obviously some people are tone deaf. I heard a mature professional football player, and a good one at that (this is fact, not conjecture) agonizing over how he can IMPROVE to become an even better player. I mean, hooray to that, right? Haters hate. Simple as that.

  40. '74 Bucs Fan Says:

I have been a GMC supporter, but his presser rubbed me the wrong way. What do you think Ayers, JW, and Kwon think about that? “my knees hurt and I need to do a better job when the game is on the line”. Someone had to point that out to you Gerald? Really? 7 years later? Come on man!!

  41. Walter Says:

It’s funny, I ask a simple question, it should be really simple for Tmax, who is a better player that we can replace McCoy with? Yet there’s no answer, you should be aching to answer this question, yet you disappeared the second I put you on the spot. If you don’t have a better option in mind, then you should just be silent, because you bring nothing to the table. Absolutely nothing.

  42. '74 Bucs Fan Says:

But I agree that self reflection is a good thing. If this can push him to greater heights, then awesome!

  43. Steven007 Says:

Walter, he’s not going away. Troll’s troll, that’s what they do. He (she?) brings up GMC in unrelated posts all the time. Clearly he pitched a very small tent when there was an actual GMC post, particularly when it could be construed by the uncritical listener to be slated negatively. So just wait. She’ll be back.

  44. Steven007 Says:

    *slanted

  45. Walter Says:

Oh trust me, I’m aware of that. I’ve been reading these threads for years now, and they’ve always been whining about McCoy. Sometimes it’s fun to troll a troll. I’ve never taken Tmax seriously though, she obviously doesn’t have any solutions to her perceived problems with the team.

  46. Bucsfanman Says:

I won’t delve into the GMC conversation other than to say that we are better with him than without him. There really is no arguing that FACT.
What I’m tired of hearing though, are the comparisons to “beasting” Ayers attitude. While Ayers may have added swagger to the line, he sure as heck didn’t produce as much as he ran his mouth now did he?! A lot of good a “beastly” personality does, when it doesn’t produce!!! Hey, it’s fair freakin’ game! With all the hype, I expected more.

  47. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Its not our job Walter. That’s designation gose to Licht and Koetter. With all these players experts around here I’m sure if some wanted to throw out some names they could. I don’t follow every team an player inn college like some here clearly do. All I’m saying is with the way he sounds to expect a stellar year to me is bit of a stretch.

  48. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Ask me who I think should replace DM an I’ll give you something. I can speak on him because I followed that young man.

  49. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Bryan Cox said the very exact same thing and later was ran out of town for picking on #93. Now some people step to him at the pro bowl and he gets it. C’mon man.

  50. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I want a DT in the second round. The WR can come in the 3rd.

  51. BucTrooper Says:

Damn… that means he only has 6 more years of realizing that he’s not playing to his potential.

  52. The Graham Tram Says:

I have a tremendous amount of respect for someone that is trying to improve their game/leadership and is open-minded enough to seek help and criticism. Imagine if you haters worked on becoming better versions of yourselves

  53. JAB83 Says:

Inside scoop for all you knuckle heads….

GMC has be at OBP all off season getting ready for this season….

    DUDE IS A BEAST!!!!

Always has been ALWAYS WILL BE!!!

You RETARDS are just picking on the best player from a bad team!!!!

Now that the team aint bad no more STFU!!!

Also note… The best player does not always need to be the best player in a TEAM SPORT…

Hate the loosers that are gone… Not the loosers that remain. The man deserves RESPECT for being a CAREER BAD AS MOTHER Fer for The Buccaneers

  54. Reach87 Says:

Amazing how low people go criticizing the team they are supposed fans of. The level is extreme. Standards…

    Go Bucs

  55. BigHogHaynes Says:

Picking at the career of GMC seems to be such a waste of brain cells … Since the team has determined it will not make the same mistake twice (Bennett) those that don’t like GMC, the hate will never go away, be it that he is one of the best in the league at what he does (that’s what the people say) why would you want to run him out of town, and what lame-brain came up with terms soft serve, leader of the losing culture, I got one question …If the BUCS refuse to sign D Jackson and get (Weapons for Jameis) and went all Defence in the next 2 Drafts, would Jameis be able to get the team to the Championship Game any time soon? Hell to the Naw naw naw!!

  56. BigHogHaynes Says:

We should take MIXON in the 1st Round! He is that damn good ! He is not a one hit wonder! See what I did there! Damn what the people say! GET MIXON GET CHAMPIONSHIPS!

  57. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

Exactly why I see them going DE first round. Not Dalvin Cook. Hayes knows what he needs. They upgraded from akeem spence and adding another nasty edge rusher will make them a scary line.

  58. Buc 4ever Says:

Mccoy need to play his game and realize that he is not Sapp and is not the leader of this defense. He doesn’t have the internal makeup to be a leader. He is a good player on a team, but not a game changer. Follow Ayers and Kwon lead, and just play. Also please stop bringing attention to yourself by running to the middle of the field and kneeling for a prayer after the pregame hype circle. I can’t stand another you of watching that your pregame ritual and then you disappear during the game.

  59. BigHogHaynes Says:

    Really STUPID^^^

  60. gotbbucs Says:

He’s not even sure who he himself is supposed to be. Being a leader is not something that can be forced onto someone or taught later in life. As a player, you either have it pretty early in your playing career or you don’t.
Morris and Dominik forced it onto him from the start directly after they released all the leaders that were on this team. A year or two under the wing of a guy like Derrick Brooks probably would have done him good.
I don’t know how, after seeing or hearing about this press conference, his teammates are supposed to react to this. He didn’t elaborate on what he was even talking about or what is thoughts were so it’s hard to judge. Is he now done trying to be a “leader” and is now going to just focus on playing? I don’t think even he knows, he’s at a point where nothing he’s tried has worked and he’s now going to try to follow someone else’s blue print on how they led?
Every time I’ve seen one of his cringe worthy pump up speaches it feels forced and uncomfortable.

Maybe Gerald, just try knocking someone on their ass, walk your ass back to the huddle, and try doing it two or three times in a row. Your not a vocal leader, which is absolutely fine. Do your job consistently and your teammates will follow your lead.
If not, and if your just going to continue to have these little epiphanies every offseason about how better to lead this defense, just take it elsewhere. This team is ready to start winning, they don’t need one of their veteran players constantly mulling the meaning of their football life and the possible legacy they may be leaving behind. Baker and Gholston and the bunch will be just fine in your absence and this defense can finally transform into a scheme that doesn’t have to cater to a guy that can only play undertackle and can only make plays against a singled up block.

  61. Capt.Tim Says:

McCoy is just as important to the defense, as Jameis is to the offense.
    You loose McCoy- no playoffs.
    Not a chance

  62. The Graham Tram Says:

    gotbbucs,

McCoy came here as a young man and was pretty much instantly made the face of the franchise. He’s had high expectation levied on him from the start and has had a pretty terrible supporting cast most of the time. We were honestly a complete joke and that’s not his fault (run defense was always a strength). But I’m sure the pressure to effect change is what’s is responsible for the changes in approach to leadership.

You should feel lucky to have a class-act like Gerald on the Bucs. We’ve watched this guy grow up, and I’m glad he’s finally getting a legitimate chance to be a winner.

  63. JimmyJack Says:

Some of y’all that are posting are an embarassment. All your doing is making the fan base look bad. A select few of you are the most unknowledgable sports fans I’ve seen on any forum.

Yeah sure it’s true that a few areas of McCoys game are debatable but to actually say garbage like he is hurting the team has to be the most clouded judgement I can recall. It’s completely irrational……..it does not present a true problem nor open the conversation towards anything reasonable.

I actually feel lost trying to respond you “dreamers” because the only estimation one could come to as a response to such nonsense is: Why is our GM still employed here for keeping somebody on the roster who is hurting the team?…….AND…….Why is our head coach and coordinator not fired yet for letting McCoy start and play every down when he is hurting the team?

  64. gotbbucs Says:

Alright JimmyJack, if we’re all just unknowledgeable sports fan, why did three people that McCoy respects enough to take their words to heart tell him that he doesn’t play up to his ability? They basically told him that he doesn’t belong in the Pro Bowl.

McCoy comes to a press conference and says himself that he hasn’t done what he was brought here to do, and you clowns come on here and flat out disagree with him. It came straight from the horse’s mouth, what more do you need to hear?

  65. JimmyJack Says:

If you simply read what I wrote I acknowledged that McCoy has some debatable parts of his game. There isn’t anything wrong with disliking something about McCoys game and being critical.

The conversation takes on a whole new level when one says “he’s bad for the team” or that “his teammates will be fine in his absence”. You guys sound like you don’t know what your talking about with those types of comments.
