Koetter: “I Like Watching The Show. I Wish I Wasn’t On It.”

April 19th, 2017

Epic blast by Dirk Koetter & video

Man, candid Dirk Koetter never fails to deliver on the keeping-it-real front.

And it’s why Koetter will be a star of Hard Knocks — even if he’s unafraid to say he wants no part of the show.

Hell, at today’s news conference announcing the Bucs being featured on the 2017 version of the HBO reality series, Koetter quickly said, “I like watching the show. I wish I wasn’t on it.”

Man, Koetter carries the big stick of which he speaks. The man was sitting alongside Hard Knocks executive producers.

Koetter didn’t back down on that, explaining he’s a viewer of Hard Knocks but he will try to stay away from the HBO cameras as much as possible.

Ironic and telling stuff from Koetter. He will be himself through the summer. And that’s what Joe is certain will make Koetter a Hard Knocks star– even if he doesn’t want to be.

Any truth to the rumor that Bryan Cox is coming back to Tampa as an Asst coach?
Joe wrote about Bryan Cox returning 10 weeks ago. No new info.–Joe https://www.joebucsfan.com/2017/02/bryan-cox-return/ Joe deleted your other question. Please don’t hijack the comments, which are supposed to at least start on topic. Thank you.

  2. Gencoimports Says:

I remember the Falcons on Hard Knocks 3 years ago and what I remember more than anything else is Head Coach Mike Smith delivering bad news to a number of players and greatly respecting both how he and the players handled it.

I don’t see how Dirk is going to be able to avoid that, even if he shakes his big stick at the camera men.

  3. Pickgrin Says:

In Dirk we trust. His straightforward style is made for TV.

I enjoyed the presser. The little video intro they showed to hype the upcoming season was cool.

  4. buddy Says:

At least Dirk made a honest statement about it. All you Superfans who want to be on Hard Knocks and people who actually work in the NFL really don’t want anything to do with it. Thats why its funny to read all you idiots who want this team on it. When in reality it isn’t that great to do it. So now you got you wish so enjoy the train wreck of season thats coming.

  5. feelthepewterpower Says:

    HBO just got Dirked

  6. Lord Cornelius Says:

“So now you got you wish so enjoy the train wreck of season that’s coming.”

lol jesus what a great “fan”

  7. rayjay1122 Says:

I guess I will be ordering HBO for a couple of months. Can’t wait though. Good opportunity to get the Bucs on the national radar. Hopefully we will have more prime time games on national TV. Look out for the pewter pirates this season and hopefully many to come.

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Bucs on Hard Knocks. Where will that be talked about more than right here. I’ll see that part of the whole action and be happy.

  9. ClodHopper Says:

    It’s about damn time!!!!

This would be a great time for Directv to call me up and offer three months of hbo for free. I keep turning it down because I never remember to cancel. This time it’ll be worth the risk!!

Time to break out the GOOD champagne. Right DB??!! Lol

  10. DPewter Says:

Lol, buddy coming out like he’s saying something everyone doesn’t already know. Buddy do you every feel like everyone driving slower than you is an idiot and everyone driving faster is a maniac?

I wasn’t pro or against this. However as someone who reads and watches everything Bucs and never being sated, being able to see behind the scenes (well kind of) look will be fun.

If Hard Knocks (during the preseason) predetermines your team’s failure then you weren’t a good team to begin with. If it was during the regular season it would be a different argument.

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I ordered HBO before the announcement. I didn’t want to take any chances they sell out, lol.

  12. DB55 Says:

Martini Asti is chilling on ice. Got two cups for me and you.

  13. DevilDogBuc Says:

Dirk doesn’t want other teams in our business

  14. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“If Hard Knocks (during the preseason) predetermines your team’s failure then you weren’t a good team to begin with. If it was during the regular season it would be a different argument.”
    ——-

Totally agree. However, the Arizona Cardinals did a Hard Knocks type show a couple years ago that followed them around all season. They went to the NFC Championship.

  15. ClodHopper Says:

Who the hell could watch that promo and not just get jazzed AF when Jameis runs out of that smoke? Next generation begins today!!

  16. big serious Says:

been waiting on this news…cant wait. with this new I am sure there will be more key additions. I think more free agents that get cut after the draft that will want to come to Tampa now. Get on the boat or get left behind. the interesting thing is WHO will walk the plank on TV

  17. bucs_365 Says:

So there ya go Joe. Even the HC would rather not be on HK. Why? Unnecessary distraction at a time when they need 100% focus.

  18. Eric Says:

What will the room temperature be in the visiting locker room?

    Whoops, old joke, sorry.

  19. ClodHopper Says:

Man alive!! First all the Falcons blowing a 25 point lead memes and now this. This has got to be the best offseason ever!!!

  20. bucs_365 Says:

So, when they go in the tank… because they bought their own hype and played to the camera… we’ll look back and say, “yup, Hard Knocks did not do them any favors”… and we’ll be looking forward to 2018.

  21. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    What Pick said.

  22. rayjay1122 Says:

I am so stoked. The draft and hard knocks will make the off season a little less painful. Go Bucs!!!

  23. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

If it were Hard Knocks the ENTIRE season I would be opposed. Training camp only, lets do this.

  24. Pickgrin Says:

    Hawaiian Buc Says:
    April 19th, 2017 at 1:40 pm
I ordered HBO before the announcement.

Me too. Last week. Knew it was coming.

  25. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I’ll never forget how hype it was when the Bengals aired on it and they showed their team doing the Oklahoma drill in camp. S@$! was hype man.

  26. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I can’t get images of Harrison who was a Bengal at the time shooting birds at the camera because he hated the idea.

  27. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Coach K will hate it. But our youngins are going to love the camera play make no mistake.

  28. Doctor Stroud Says:

As a Bucs fan, it will be hard not to watch Hard Knocks (having never watched it before). There are so many great story lines to follow, e.g., McCoy, Winston, Alexander, etc. However, I have to agree with bucs_365. We have seen Bucs teams collapse too many times before because they bought into their own hype (even in a single game, re: Bucs v. Colts). As a Bucs fan, I am conditioned to fight my inner pessimism and optimism. Let’s hope for the best!

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    So…we’ll get to see Dirk…and the Turk…as cameras lurk…

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    buddy Says
“At least Dirk made a honest statement about it. All you Superfans who want to be on Hard Knocks and people who actually work in the NFL really don’t want anything to do with it. Hey dummy. He said that because he hates being on camera. Not because he doesn’t want the show. Guess you are the idiot, huh?

To all those whining…what is really the point now? It’s going to happen no matter what, so you may as well get behind it. Or at least shut up so the rest of us can enjoy it.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Know what I am looking forward to?

TMax finally seeing GMC as he really is, a hard fighter and motivator.

  32. TampaTown Says:

^^^^^ What he said. Thank you Buccaneer Bonzai

  33. Steven007 Says:

Good luck with that BB. Max seems incapable of change even if presented with evidence. However I hope he proves us both wrong.

  34. Eric Says:

Nobody seems to realize that our coaches are smart enough and capable of manipulating the cameras as well. For the most part, hard knocks is about their personalities, not their performance but I have a suspicion that Koetter will throw in some smoke to throw off future opponents.

  35. Lord Cornelius Says:

“To all those whining…what is really the point now?”

In general that applies to a lot of Joebucsfan comments every day lol

  36. DallasBuc Says:

Can someone please remind me why playoff teams are excluded from HK consideration?

  37. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Bottom line is this: if we are a good team, Hard Knocks won’t hurt us at all. If we are a pretender, then we will have a bad season and everyone can blame the show. Spin it however you want, it’s true.

  38. Pick6 Says:

“people who actually work in the NFL really don’t want anything to do with it.”

if you haven’t noticed, most coaches and players employed by the NFL also hate doing media hits in nearly any form- press conferences, locker room look-ins, interviews, articles….at best NFL employees treat it as a necessary evil to build their personal or team brand. at worst they treat it like marshawn lynch or warren sapp on a bad day.

but guess what? the NFL lives off of it, the fans demand it, and the most successful teams and players are sought out the most. the only difference between hard knocks and all the other media platforms is that winners can and do opt out. the “distraction” of the whole world watching has never derailed teams with a championship mentality, it becomes part of their environment and their job rather than a distraction from those things.

if winning teams and coaches could opt out of general interviews, you’d never see bill belichick behind a podium. does that mean that being the NFL’s most covered team has handicapped them as far as winning goes?

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Can’t see how this can be a bad thing. Bucs fans have complained for years about not getting any national exposure. Well, guess what … Bucs will have more exposure for the next few months than every other NFL team. Dirk’s been at this game plenty long enough to know how to handle this. Fans need to just enjoy the ride.

  40. LifeOfABucFan Says:

My family and friends from the UK and South Africa all are very happy to see their team on an international level!!!

Love it!! My Gawd!! I love it!!!

  41. The Buc Realist Says:

Hola from Spain B!tches!!!! Had to interrupt the vacation to weigh in!! It makes Sad to see the owners not Buying all in to win!!!! Are they doing every thing they can to help this team win?? Are they helping this team by eliminating every distraction they can???? The answer is NO!!!!!!!! They signed this team up to expand the brand and be on NFL’s longest commercial!!!!

I am giving a pass to the Coaches and players as the OWNERS did not set the right mindset for this season!!!!! Hope the season is successful despite what the glazer are doing!!!!!! Maybe next year they will be all in!!!!

    Go Bugs!!!!!!!!!

  42. greg Says:

As if we needed any more reasons to not be happy about this Hard Knocks nonsense

  43. dooshlarue Says:

    NosBos,

No Ebonics on Wednesdays or did the doctors switch up your meds?

  44. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

So did I Hawaiian. I have never seen much of a need for HBO and therefore have never seen Hard Knocks. No way am I going to miss this one though. I could watch Dirk and Jaboo 24/7. Signed up this afternoon. Hey they even threw in Skinemax and Showtime for only $15 extra per month.

  45. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Go back to your siesta Realist. Any Bucs fan should be ecstatic about this. If this keeps them from winning they aren’t ready anyway. Personally I think these guys are professional enough to handle. Jesus, as if a couple more cameras at practice is going to ruin this for the guys.

  46. The Buc Realist Says:

    @TouchdownTampabay

Its 10:35 p.m. So siesta was a long time ago just like my first bottle of rioja!!!!! And your wrong!!!!! “REAL” Buc fans are ecstatic about Playoffs!!!! We are excited about winning Divisions!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Duches maybe you can remove that dildo from ya @$$ sir.

  48. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Sit yo old dusty @$$ down somewhere..

  49. Buc1987 Says:

    DallasBuc Says:

“Can someone please remind me why playoff teams are excluded from HK consideration?”

    Exactly!

    Why? Because it’s a distraction.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

    Oh and Bonzai….stop.

We’ve already seen GMC’s motivational skills with “Let’s go have fun.”

    That ship already sailed.

Well said. I agree with every word!

These are adults making money not college kids exited to be on TV!!!!!!!!!

It’s a new day! Go Bucs!!!

  52. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    tdtb agreed..

  53. Earl Says:

Put Miko (Grimes) on there if Dirk don’t want to show his face! ijs

    ——–

One of the funniest and most entertaining things about this blog is to read people’s comments, and realize that they actually think they know what is going on. They truly believe they know which player has heart and which doesn’t, which player works hard and who doesn’t, and which player is a great leader and which isn’t, and which player is a good player and which player isn’t. And the majority have never even stepped foot in One Buc Place, never played a down of football, never watched a second of coach’s film, and have never had a shred of inside information, yet they make proclamations that go against the evidence and every legit source. It’s comical, and it’s the #1 reason I have been reading this blog since almost day 1. These are the ones that make this site go (aside from the Joe’s killing it with great articles day after day). I salute you Mr. Uneducated, yet you think you know it all fans.

  56. DoNUTS Says:

Flowers are in full bloom for silly season.

By the end of Summer, Coach K and #3 will be TV superstars. I hate the distraction aspect of HK but I think this team needs a little national attention so hence I tolerate it. I think Kwon will also shine somehow he has that it factor on-off field. If you need evidence, see his twitter feed.

    Go Bucs.

  57. Capt.Tim Says:

    Nobody had HBO?
    Thats a statistical anomoly?

I am excited to see the Bucs on Hard Knocks!
Its not going to cause problems. If fact- it will probably add motivation.
Nobody wants to look like a loser or a quitter on HBO.

And you sure dont wanna get fired, nation wide

  58. Buc1987 Says:

    Hawaiian Buc …you’re welcome man.

I aim to please and give my opinion the way I see it.

I mean I watched the game like you did right?

Or Did you miss that one? I saw the pre-game speech and it was WEAK and EMPTY. Just like most of your defense of this man you so greatly revere for some unknown reason.

I call it like I see it. If others saw it that way too, then so be it. You don’t have to see it that way pumpkin.

  59. Buc1987 Says:

Fake and contrived? Trying with all his might to inspire?

    Which do you prefer?

    I prefer WEAK and EMPTY.

I never bash GMC. So why single out me?

Did I hit home or something? Jeeesh!

    So many questions….

  60. Buc1987 Says:

You loooove me and you know it!

  61. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @1987,

I didn’t mean to single you out, although for many reasons posters like you are great for the site. Your comment just sparked a little mini-rant for me. I’m sorry you took it personal, but I know you’re a good dude and aren’t really that butt hurt. It’s all good.

As for me revering GMC, I come to his defense because he gets unfairly criticized by a select group of people. By all accounts he is one of the best players on our team, and has been for quite some time. I know why he gets criticized and I’m sure he does too – because we’ve been losers for a long time. It’s no fun to go after the little guy, but much better to go after the big guy. However, he’s not the reason we have been bad. If we had a room full of 5 or 6 time Pro-Bowlers (not sure how many he has), I promise you we wouldn’t have this long playoff drought. The reason we have been bad has been the guys around him, poor coaching, poor management, and some really bad luck. He’s not Warren Sapp, but there’s only one 99. I NEVER even think of comparing the two, just like I never compare Michael Jordan to Lebron James (and no, I’m not saying GMC is Lebron). They are two different players in two different eras, surrounded by different players and coaches, and playing different defenses. Hell, even the ownership is different.

If you want to believe that GMC is a bad leader or an overrated player, that’s just fine with me. Good for you. I know his teammates love him, and that’s what really matters. But the people who think I love him so much are the same people that have an unhealthy hatred for him and bash him at literally every post. Last I checked we are all Bucs fans, correct? Why do people want to single me out for defending him, when he’s one of our guys? So it’s okay to bash him at every turn, but not for me to defend him? If he doesn’t play well or isn’t on this team, our defense will be worse. That’s a fact, backed up by actual statistics. I cheer for every single player on this roster until they are no longer on this roster. I will defend any player on this team that gets bashed constantly. Go back and look, I defended Jameis when so many weren’t during his rookie year. Criticizing a guy for a bad game or a selfish act is one thing, but I’m not going to trash a guy over and over and over again. This is my team, these are my guys.

  62. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Distraction or not, we are making the playoffs this season! I haven’t felt this strongly for the team since the day before Monte announced he was leaving. It’s about time. We deserve this!

  63. BuccaneEric75 Says:

The only thing I’m worried about is the defense. As good of D as we played in the second half, it’s not like we stopped any powerhouse offenses. The two good offenses faced at the end (Cowboys and Saints) he’d thier way. That is why I wouldn’t be opposed to a DE in round 1.

  64. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    *had thier way

  65. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    @Realist

Try some Priorat while you’re there, especially Costers del Priorat – Clos Cypres, Joan Simó – Les Eres, or Cal Batllet – Gratallops or absolutely anything from Clos Mogador, Mas Martinet, Clos Erasmus or L’Ermita. Best appellation in Spain by far and a big step up from Rioja. I’m a winemaker myself and currently live in the Mediterranean area (for the last almost 3 years) running a small vineyard and winery, so I know about that which I speak. You’re welcome for the recommendation and for making your vacation better!!! Go Bucs!!!

  66. The Buc Realist Says:

    @FLBoyInDallas

Thx!!!! I was just talking down to the Underlings here, using terms they can understand!!!! I have written down you recommendations and will keep a keen eye out and report back!!!! I am leaving Sevillia tomorrow and will be in Granada then onto Madrid until the end of the month!!!!!!! So plenty of time to try so much here!!!!

The for the tips and the info!!!! Such a great feeling to be into the Bucs Family!!! Saw a Bucs Jersey and Rays jersey in Barcelona over Easter!!!!! The club is International!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!

  67. LargoBuc Says:

    Well put Hawaiian.

  68. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

While the exposure is a good thing for marketing reasons I think this is a bad decision. We are so close to being great and instead of focusing on being the best we can be guys will be focused more on cameras and all that extra crap.

In a couple of seasons down the road it wouldn’t be an issue as much but as of today I think we are taking away focus that needs to be on football and only football. Hope I’m wrong!

  69. Mike Johnson Says:

Koetter knows the real deal. HE knows what a distraction this hard knocks crap is going to be. And HE..wants to concentrate on putting together a winning team. Thats right folks you heard it here, This HBO program is not good for our Bucs in the all out winning objectives program. As YOU..shall soon see! Bad move for our Bucs.
