Koetter: Fans Should Jack Up Their Expectations

April 1st, 2017

Bring on September

Dirk Koetter isn’t a patient man and he doesn’t expect you to be patient at all.

It’s a win-now league. Wins are all that matter. Koetter reiterated this big time at the NFC Coaches Breakfast in Phoenix after a question from JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman.

“I expected to make the playoffs last year, and we didn’t. I mean, no one has higher expectations than I do. I have very high expectations. It has nothing to do with coming off 9-7. I mean, go ask any coach in this room, ‘Coach, do you expect to be 2-14 this year? Yeah, Ira, I think 3-13 would be an excellent season.’ No one’s thinking like that.”

But you know what the fans are thinking, Ira fired back at Koetter.

“They should. I mean, they should,” Koetter said of fans having a playoffs-now mindset. “I just saw a clip the other day of the Seattle game at home when Seattle was driving. They threw that pass and Bradley McDougald intercepted and it ended the game. You know what jumped out at me when I saw the clip? How loud I could hear the crowd. You guys were there; those last two or three home games at Raymond James, that place was rockin’. That’s how it has to be all the time. That means your fans have high expectations and we have to deliver our part. You know I’m always beating the drum: no opposing jerseys in the lower bowl. And I want that place loud as hell. I know that our main job is to do what we have to do on the field. But, sure, we want our fans to have high expectations. They should. You know, let’s face it, if we don’t do our part, they’ll be getting rid of me. That’s just what this business is.”

Man, fans love this kind of talk from Koetter. It’s April 1, and reading that, Joe might not have enough patience to get to September.

So pumped for this season.

    “Bradley McDougald intercepted and it”

Seattle was so impressed they signed him. Grrr. Major Jason Licht failure…one that will come back to bite us later, just like Bennett.

  2. Mick Says:

Buc Bonzai don’t worry we’re damn near guaranteed to draft a safety within the first two rounds. If we can snag Budda Baker or Obi in the 2nd round that will set us up well this season as we’d have a rotation of either of those, Tandy, and Wilcox.

  3. Destinjohnny Says:

No cause jabril peppers will be roaming the secondary

  4. Eric Denman Says:

If this team draft Peppers I’m gonna be pissed to the max.

  5. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Yeah, we don’t need a lber with ZERO balls skills playing safety for us. Peppers is literally the only pick I would legitimately hate for us to make. Mayock putting him as his number 1 safety is a joke, and it’s just a tv move to generate buzz. The guy will BUST hard

  6. Bucballbaby84 Says:

I’m not gonna be pissed if they draft peppers. Just highly disappointed. I honestly don’t see management going that route.

    @Bonzai:

There is a major difference of perspective between Bucs management and some fans. I sure felt that MacDougal was the cream of our safety crop. It’s clear that Licht disagrees. Mike Smith signaled he was ready to move on. Whether it turns out like Bennett or like Booker Reese remains to be seen.

And it looks certain that the team will draft a safety.

I have wondered just what went wrong on the MacDougald front and what the GM sees in the current roster and coming new crop. But the change sure is not accidental and the team doesn’t seem distressed.

  8. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

McDougald sure visited a few teams an none were willing to sign him for what he wanted, so he went crawling to the best team he could find so he didn’t have to lose anymore. If Seattle was so high on him they would have never let him out of the building on the first visit

  9. Buddy Says:

Good now that he said that he can be fired when they don’t win 9 games this season good riddance Dork-err Dirk. Go back to being a great assistant coach.

Your slow. Go be an Illinois fan

  11. Bucballbaby84 Says:

@buddy your shot! So you want us to be a team that will forever never be in the playoffs again? So let’s keep firing coaches after two years? Do you really think that’s gonna get us anywhere? This is the best the team has been since we went to the super bowl and their only getting better.

  12. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Some of that idiotic crap that comes out of ppl’s mouth I tell us.

  13. Pickgrin Says:

    LOL – Bonzai’s man crush is gone…

    Michael Bennett comparison eh?

It took McDougald like 3 weeks to find a job. Nobody really wanted him and the Bucs obviously didn’t either. His deal with Seattle is a 1 year contract for $1.8M. Thats’ just over half of what we paid Conte.

  14. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Boy I’m ready… What say you BUCS fans?
    @buddy… Go play in traffic.
This team is going on the right direction lead by Capt Dirk. ⛴

  19. James Walker Says:

Seattle must be very porous at safety if they look at McDougald and see him as an upgrade.

  20. Mike Says:

I had an expectation that our moron gm sign McDougald.

  21. HardynickersonforbucsROH Says:

Don’t worry Dirk the expectations are high…
