ESPN: Buccaneers In Multiple Discussions About Trading Down

April 26th, 2017

Bold

UPDATED: 8:34 a.m. – It appears general manager Jason Licht does not have his heart set on selecting a running back in the first round tomorrow night.

Mighty insider Adam Schefter of ESPN is Tweeting this morning that the Bucs are deep in the market to trade down and out of the No. 19 overall pick — maybe even way down.

“Buccaneers are talking with at least three teams about moving back in 1st round, and maybe even out of first round altogether, per source,” Schefter wrote.

Whoa!

Joe is all in favor of Licht stocking up on picks in what’s considered a deep draft.

Remember, Licht traded down in the first round last year, from No. 9 to No. 11, and banked on his intelligence. After the trade, the Giants took cornerback Eli Apple at No. 10 overall. Then at No. 11, Licht took his target, cornerback Vernon Hargreaves.

Licht then used the fourth-round pick acquired in the trade with the Bears to trade back into the second round and draft Roberto Aguayo. As Joe noted yesterday, Licht’s latest draft pattern is to acquire and use two second-round picks, which he did the past two years.

So who might be a trade partner for the Bucs? Kansas City has been a willing draft-day dealer lately, including with the Bucs last year. Andy Reid and Dirk Koetter are close friends, which can’t hurt.

Kansas City sits at No. 27 overall, and there’s lots of speculation they want quarterback DeSean Watson.

  1. Brandon Says:

This is great news. The draft is chock full of high 2nd round talent all the way through the 3rd round. Trading down, or out of the 1st round and loading up on draft picks is fantastic.

  2. 404Buc Says:

    The Patriot way!

  3. Yungry Says:

    Great news! very excited

  4. NJBucsFan Says:

    I’d take that all day

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He does this every year to pick up extra picks that he can use to move back into the second. This tells me that my theory might be right…that he targets players he can get a few picks later so that he can trade down for picks to trade back up with later.

    Bet he’s targeting another kicker!

    (just kidding)

  6. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Make sense. The claim was put in months ago for DC4. Might as well work they’re magic an aquire him along with a few extras if you can.

  7. mike n Says:

    sounds good to me

  8. biff barker Says:

Sure, gotta counter the foolhardy move for trading up for a kicker last year.

Need to build up depth. WR, RB, DL, OL, LB, CB, S, etc.

  9. BuccoBruce91 Says:

    Love it

  10. Joeypoppems Says:

Trading down is a smart move. Out of the 1st is bold. So excited for tomorrow night!

  11. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Love it, it is a deep draft at the positions this team needs, RB, WR, S, D Line. Make the most of it.

  12. JTHV Says:

Silly season smoke. Remember when it was reported Bucs were listening to teams about trading out of #1 pick in 2015?

Thank the football gods all of this will be over in a few short days.

It’s the most tiresome subject in all of sports. So many, too many Keyboard GM’s muddy these waters with opinions and pure speculation that it makes it no fun anymore.

The draft used to be fun, but now even McDonald’s cashiers have smart phones and Madden Fantasy Football at their fingertips.

    Ugh!

  13. Broy34 Says:

    A. This is pure evidence that shows we have a smart, elite gm
    B. NEVER in my life have I been happy to see our team move down. This draft-pure genius. Deepest draft I can remember
    C. This shows they have a target and know they can get him later.
    D. Could be cook sliding which seems to be most definitely real. Could be Baker or obi or simply knowing their back is going in the third maybe second in the form of mixon or Perine.
    E. Absolutely stoked. They most likely won’t move completely out of the first round. Would simply love to move back ten spots and you can bet your a$$ they fly up to get a second guy in the first or two in the second maybe three in the second. Brace yourselves boys we have ourself an elite gm. And I don’t wanna hear about agauyo because the kid was absolutely supposed to be the next great kicker and with the extra point moved back it meant something. Jury still out

  14. JTHV Says:

At this point I can care less, I trust Jason Licht and his *Professional Scouting Department.

  15. Broy34 Says:

Jhtv- you’re clueless. Please , I dare you come up with a reason to report this and have people think you’re trading out…So others don’t trade up for cook? Please. This gets out because you want to trade out and nothing else. Period end of debate

  16. Kobe Faker Says:

This is what a good poker player will say….

You dont want anybody to jump front of you…

If you say that you have no interest in the first round, ..wait for your 2 or 3 players that you like to fall and then grab them by the nuts without anyone jumping front of you to get what you really want

That is the Kobe Faker way

  17. scott Says:

I love it, no wonder we been looking at all these 2nd rounders. Lets get a few of em!

  18. JTHV Says:

It was also reported that atleast 8 teams are trying to trade down … that’s a whole lot of competition for moving back, up, down, left or right.

Sounds like a Super Bowl weekend Saturday night at Thee Doll House on Westshore Blvd.

  19. Dewey Selmon Says:

There is another article which Joe is all for trading up to get Cook. Now he is all for trading back. lol
Why so black and white? Joe is in favor of good, smart deals. They’re out there when it comes to trading up, and they’re out there in the trade-back realm.–Joe

  20. JTHV Says:

    Broy,

    Silly Season

    Your time of year?

  21. EvolvingBucsFan Says:

Man i can’t wait to see what happens!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!

  22. Gencoimports Says:

The Bucs have more needs than they have picks. This post is music to my years.

I wouldn’t even have a problem if the Bucs took Cook in the 2nd round (if he falls that deep) after the Bucs traded down to pick up extra picks.

  23. Waterboy Says:

Probably the best move in a deep draft.

  24. meh Says:

    Excellent news.

  25. Broy34 Says:

Yes jHIV it’s silly season. Rumoring to trade back makes zero sense of a smoke screen. The niners being “in love with Trubisky” is a smoke screen. I know my stuff and nobody knows you. This place is about returning posters. Don’t mock the site runners first post ever

  26. mike10 Says:

    Love it!!

  27. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Able to grab Joe Mixon in round 2 and maybe Caleb Brantley, marcus maye buddah baker that would be a great round 2 and make up for the Aguayno mess up

  28. mike10 Says:

… but, I’ll be more impressed when I see the terms – I always feel like Licht gets bullied out on deals/trades

  29. bucNation Says:

if we move down to late first round i’m convinced we’re getting a running back weather it be nixon or kamara is yet to be seen dalvin definitely won’t make it that long

  30. Joeypoppems Says:

I think Seattle could also be involved. They have been linked to OL prospects the entire time as have the Broncos. Trading spots puts them right ahead of Denver to have the OL prospect of their choice

  31. tdtb2015 Says:

    Awesome!

    In Licht WE Trust!!!

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

If it makes sense, do it. One more day guys and gals! One more day!

  33. Joeypoppems Says:

Idk who we would trade out of the 1st with. Unless we trade down twice. Would be cool if we traded with Cleveland from #19 and ended up with their two 2nd rounders or maybe even their 1st next year and #33 this year.

Playoff contender with the #1 overall pick next year. Sounds pretty good to me lol

And keep drinking coffee, red bull, Saki or whatever you are drinking! lol

  36. JonBuc Says:

Given the absolute abysmal 2nd round recent draft record for the Bucs ( Licht included…ASJoker,¡Aguayo-No!)…giving up a 1st and the 5th year
option control makes me a bit nervous.

  37. Eric Says:

Depends who is still on the board when 19 comes. Smart to have a contingency if the player they want isnt there.

Likely this is happening with many teams.

    Not earth shattering at all.

  38. Supersam Says:

    Yes!! Finally something making sense.

  39. Miko Says:

should be lots of talent at the top of the 2nd round…this would be great!!!

  41. OMGBUCIT Says:

I think we may be getting Mixon in the 2nd if we trade back.

  42. Broy34 Says:

Oh people follow you on twitter you’re so cool. Never called myself cool. Not even the slightest. I’m saying this is a community type website. That’s all. Btw whats your Twitter handle. Let’s see u put Ur money where your loud mouth is

  43. Lord Corn Says:

Lol in the only full 1st round mock I wrote up I had us trading back twice and out of the 1st. Back with Sea who targets o line then back with Cle or SF (I forget) for them to get their QB. That’s my ultimate dream scenario probably – picking 5 players between rounds 2/3 and 6 by the 4th. We could hit on like every need other than o line with good value at DE/S/CB/WR/RB/TE in that range literally getting all 6 positions. Then use r5-r7 on developmental OT/DT and one more WR

  44. 1nebuv Says:

I posted this the other day …
Trade back with KC get KC 1ST AND 2ND .
THEN if Cleveland stills needs a qb (kizoir) you get Cleveland 2 2nds this year or 2nd and 3rd this year and a 2nd next year .
Now you have now you have 4 2nd rounds picks with arguably the deepest draft ever .
Rember you could even work some magic with Jon lynch

  45. KingBuc17 Says:

Hope its not a smoke screen as this would be the ideal situation!!! Hope Cleveland gives us a there two seconds for our 19… they might relinquish 100 trade value points to get their QB before Houston or Kansas City and not have to reach for him at 1 or 12. Plus that gives them three picks in 19. Should be 3 impacts. This gives us 3 (33, 50 and 52) pick in top 52 and one impact and two starters at major need to win NOW.

  46. Broy34 Says:

And bro the people I care about following me do. I don’t use twitter. It’s gone by the wayside in my eyes. I’m a happily married man. That’s where my focus is. Not who follows me on twitter.

  47. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

JonBuc….you are 100% correct with that statement…dunderbox licht should be in Tennessee and we should have robinson down here that guy is building a perennial playoff team and playing chess, while licht is playing checkers trying to be cute drafting kickers and DBs and OL who do not see the field

  48. @SarasotaJay Says:

Seattle at 26 would be nice. They have three 3rd round picks. Maybe give them our pick at 19 and then get theirs at 26 plus two 3rd round picks?

  49. Broy34 Says:

A perennial playoff team that had the same record as us. Interesting

  50. JTHV Says:

    Broy,

    @JTHV of course …

Buddy, you’re a happily married man being confrontational (and starting said confrontation) in the comment section of a football team’s fan site.

    Relax pal.

  51. Garv Says:

Hey, it’s smart and makes a lot of sense. Of course, finding a good trade partner, isn’t that the rub? Aren’t a lot of teams looking to trade down in a draft this deep? As for worrying about fan reaction at draft parties? Well, drafting according to fan reaction is probably not a good idea in the first place. LOL
Bottom line, good idea, hope it happens. Sports Legends tomorrow night anyone?

  52. SteveK Says:

I would love a trade down.

I would also like to hear what Celly is thinking right about now. Anytime a fan suggests a trade down, he loses it lol. 😂

Go Bucs! It would be great to trade down twice, out of the first round and gain 4 plus picks in rounds 2 and 3. That’s how you carve out a roster!

We need to b bold these next two years for a pot of reasons!

  53. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Thats because our GM has a brain.

  54. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m at the point of not paying much attention to all these reports. It’s just smokescreen after smokescreen. I’m sure there are situations where Licht would love to trade down, and other situations where he would stand pat. It all depends on how the draft goes. We won’t know for sure until we are on the clock. The draft can’t get here soon enough.

  55. Kobe Faker Says:

Move up to get future HOF reciever

Terrel Owens clone with Jerry Rice attitude

Give up 1st and 3rd round pick

    COREY DAVIS

  56. DBS Says:

The NFL Draft. AKA The Annual BS Contest.

  57. HFXBUC Says:

This would be awesome. Trade back into the 2nd and pick up more picks this year and next year and grab Dalvin Cook with a late 3rd round pick! (just a little joke for the Cook fanboys.)

  58. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Don’t make me No difference. They’ve been rumoring my guy to the second round for weeks now. On some trumped up behavioral bs. Be it 1st or 2nd fine by me.

  59. KingBuc17 Says:

Trade with Cleveland: They get 19 to pick Watson ahead of HOU and KC. We get pick 33, 50, 145 and right to Josh Gordon.

2nda-33 – Adore Jackson CB – will start in Slot which we play often and be in the League top three SPT every year for ten years, Elite returner ( Neon Deon Esq play maker on SPT)
    2ndb-50 – Don’te Foreman-the man beast will be our thunder(15-20 touches) and Martin/Quizz/Simms/Barber(split 10-15 touches).
2ndc-52- Godwin WR3 – Special receiver that can RAC and durable
3rd-84- Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, another huge DE to replace Ayers next year
4th-125- Xavier Woods, S First Ruston Player taken….
5tha-145- Carlos Henderson WR4, Slot and SPT stud in the NFL
5thb-162-Bucky Hodges TE2 will play often in 2TE sets and be a nightmare in RED Zone, plus we still have the enlightened blocking TE Stocker?? Steal of Draft

  60. Joeypoppems Says:

Just my opinion, Bucky Hodges will be much better off as a WR than an in-line TE in a 2 TE set.

  61. DB55 Says:

Fun fact: with the 9th pick that we traded away last yr the Bears drafted Leonard Floyd (DE) who had 7 sacks last yr vs 1 Int from VH3 and whatever positive contributions Aguayo had which seems like not much (see Nick Foles).

And for those of you screaming that we need sack masters in retrospect the trade down seems like a bad decision.

So stay at 19, draft Cook and move onto Friday night.

  62. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Get back on your sh!t Licht.
Damn Skippy we need more – draft capital.
No flash in the pan here buddy – Licht tryna build a perennial contenda.

  63. DB55 Says:

    JTHV

I follow you on twitter too so I win too!!!! Now if I could only get a follow back. 🙏🏽

  64. gotbbucs Says:

It’s a fine idea, people just need to realize a trade down from 19 to mid to late 20’s isn’t going to net a plethora of picks. The pick or picks gained would likely just be used as currency to trade back up in the middle rounds.
I’m all for this idea because if we’re not picking in the early teens then the players I think they actually want are more late first round graded talents. I still think you either trade up for a premiere player that slips a little bit out of the top 10, or you trade back and grab someone like Forrest Lamp, Obi Melifonwu, or Budda Baker later in the 1st round.

  65. grafikdetail Says:

if cook or njoku is there at 19 just take them… if not pick up the phones for trades

    LMAO, done!

  67. Pickgrin Says:

A trade back with KC to #27 should net us their 3rd and 4th round picks. Perfect position to snag Budda Baker or Adore Jackson towards the end of the 1st.

Problem is – its being talked about so the opposite will likely happen. Crap. Well – if we’re gonna move up, it better be for OJ Howard…

  68. JTHV Says:

    Handle?

  69. MadMax Says:

lIf Barnett, Williams, Davis, Howard and the other Dline top 20 guys are gone (probably will be), DO IT!

We can work on grabbing Obi, Engram, Perine, Walker!! I like it!!

  70. Mike Johnson Says:

By the time our Bucs pick in the 1st, the best ones will be all gone..almost. So if we can get a 2 for one deal in the 2nd rd, that would be great. This draft is full of..Middle of the pack guys in the 2nd rd. Yes, even at running back.

  71. DB55 Says:

    I sent you a tweet. 🙏🏽

  72. blind melon Says:

  73. Broy34 Says:

  74. Pa Privateer Says:

Maybe the Browns jump from top of the second to 19? Yeah, I know, but I can wish.

I think there will be more trades this year than people think.

If Litch does trade out of 19 it would not surprise me. The Bucs have invested a ton of scouting time into prospects ranked in the late 1st to the early 4th.

I feel very confident saying that Litch is targeting another pass catching TE early. I think Litch wants one early. High probability it is Njoku TE. I would not be surprised to even see Evan Engram TE selected to the Bucs. He is not a true TE but he isnt that far off of a comparison to Julio Jones. He isn’t Julio, but he could create some very interesting mismatches.

Imagine Litch picking up a TE, WR, S, RB, DL and OG/C all in rounds 2-5?

  76. Tampa Tony Says:

A lot of FSU fans pretending to be Bucs fans will be crying tomorrow

  77. America's Commenter Says:

Dalvin Cook could be the next Marshall Faulk … or he could be the next Cadillac Williams. Many scouts don’t see a dime’s worth of difference between Dalvin Cook and Marlon Mack, so it makes sense to trade back for a pair of high second round picks to shore up other areas and take Mack in the third round.

    ^This!!

  80. SOEbuc Says:

Love to trade back most of the time. This drafted is so stocked with so many good players at different positions. If we are able to trade very far down in the first I would like to address the safety situation first with Budda or Obi. Then again there are many positions needed for our team so they could go BPA for all these extra picks

  81. Pistol Pete Says:

I am too pressed for time, but is there a link someone can post to the point chart for each draft pick? I’d like to see after work what #19 Round 1 is worth and potentially where we would trade down to.
    #lazy

  82. Capt.Tim Says:

    Yes!Yes!Yes!
Get outbof first round, get an extra 2nd, 3Rd, and 5th.

That is the move, in a dradf thats deep thru 5h round.
Its the best idea , of every scenario Ive seen. That would answer all of our question marks

    In Licht we trust!

  83. USFBUC Says:

Wow trading out of the first altogether would be a bold move. Imagine trading back to the top of the second, still getting a top RB, solid TE, DJax replacement, and more.

  84. Kenny Says:

If these reports are true, I think its quite obvious they are targeting Mixon at the end of the first or early second round… then have 2 more second round picks!

I would trade 1 first for 3 seconds in a heart beat!

  85. DraftPartier Says:

Of course trading out of the first may suck for those attending the draft party tomorrow night.

  86. LUVMYBUCS Says:

The “Great” Bobby Beathard was notorious for trading out of the 1st round.

  87. Big-BucsGA Says:

I think this is a good idea. If Tampa isn’t sold on the talent at pick 19 trade back to get more picks. Now if Dalvin Cook, O.J. Howard and John Ross are still on the board at 19 that will be interesting to see what the Bucs will do as far as drafting one of them. If they trade the19th pick I truly believe that they will draft the best safety on the board. I can see in the second round taking the best offensive skill position on the board.

  88. Buc Fresh Says:

I love this. I been wanting to trade and get picks. This is great thanks Jason

  89. unbelievable Says:

If the Bucs can come away with 4, or even 5 picks from rounds 1 – 3 (even if none are in round 1), we will be sitting pretty.

Could turn out great or vice Versa I really wanted Dalvin it seem with the chemistry him and famous had would be deadly and now that every team in our division has world class backs we as well should invest in one!!

  98. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Lakeland right on, this bobblehead has not shown he is the 2nd coming of Bill Polian or even Sonny Weaver jr, he is more like the GM from the jags in draft day, he needs to draft how it comes to him and grab cook if he is there or even cam robinson if the others are gone, teh bucs OL is putrid, and we have a franchise QB, protect him

No I’m not bragging about anything.

I’m pointing out 2 successful 2nd round picks vs 2 failures in 4 drafts. 50% success = better than the NFL average = you being a jack4ss for making a deal of it. I’m holding you accountable for obvious bias and negativity which isn’t based in any sort of objective realistic NFL world view.

Do you want LIght fired? Make an objective argument for it. Otherwise stop talking sh1t on your own team using only negative facts. Or keep doing it I guess – but that’s just sad as all h3ll to me. Like why even care if this is how you feel all the time?

We weren’t the WORST o-line in the league according to pretty much any site. Most have us bottom 1/3. Biggest weaknesses were C/RT not LT/RG. Saying that doesn’t discount anything I’ve said about those 2 guys being succesful draft picks. You’re just looking for more reason to keep hating and feeling angry about our GM for whatever weird reason on a wednesday.

Smith right now has been the best LT from that entire draft class despite being like the 4th or 5th OT taken. Go look it up. And Marpet has been graded as one of the better interior lineman in the NFL. And that’s only 2 years into the position – which is the most developmental position in football now (i.e. expecting immediate all-pro OTs/OGs out of the 2nd round is a ridiculous standard to have – just getting starters is a win).

I don’t mind him trading down. I don’t see him trading completely out of it though.

Depends on who is available at 19 when it comes up.

I have no problem with trading down, I don’t feel there is a game changer at any position at 19. I would not mind getting solid depth players that could take over as starters in a year or two.
I would get the best DL player in the first, WR in the second, RB third, and Safety in the third if that’s what they get for trading down.

    1-Harris DE
    2-Godwin WR
    3-Hunt RB
    3-Baker S

Man, I would be a grown man crying if they pulled this off! That would set us off! I don’t think Baker will make it to the 3rd tho.

If we traded down into the 2nd we would pick up some serious talent with those extra picks.

Brown’s have a bunch of picks don’t they? Nice could get a couple second rounders for their first…and maybe even a player?

  111. Pete Mitchell Says:

Man, I’m excited for the draft!

I hope all this trade back talk is conditional on derek Barnett not being there. I think he may wind up being a top 10 pick, or maybe 11 to the Saints.

    I’m sooo excited.

    GREAT, GREAT, GREAT NEWS!!!!!

#19 is a perfect spot to trade back from as the Giants and Texans could both draft a QB so any of the teams picking after them could want our pick bad … I LOVE IT!
