Jacquies Smith Will Return

April 21st, 2017

Returning.

So Bucs fans who believe in hopes and prayers and answered Hail Marys will rejoice with raised glasses this evening with the news that oft-injured Jacquies Smith will, barring something totally unforeseen, return to the Bucs.

Per Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Smith, an unrestricted free agent, did not sign an offer with another team by the 4 p.m. deadline today, which makes him a Bucs defensive end by default. The 49ers had toyed with the idea of signing Smith but nothing materialized.

This is good news but it does not resolve the issue that the Bucs need an edge rusher. Still.

Smith, while talented, has a difficult time staying on the field due to injuries. That’s not a slam at Smith; that’s the ugly unvarnished truth.

Are we to believe Smith, coming off major knee surgery, is going to be just as good as he once was and unafraid of more injuries that will keep him off the field? That’s an Aaron Rodgers-like Hail Mary, man.

Joe has nothing against Smith. But banking on him to log 12 games is, to be polite, a lot of hope and crossed fingers. Only once in the past three seasons has Smith played more than 12 games, and Smith has never started more than 11 games in a season.

Joe sure hopes Smith comes back and is a monster and starts every game. Joe would be much more comfortable if the Bucs can find an edge rusher in the first two days of the draft.

absolutely no way can he be counted on nor trusted to be a key player

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Great – if he stays healthy then you got a valuable pass rusher. If he doesn’t stay healthy he doesn’t really cost anything and you cut him or put him on ER. If he’s outplayed in the preseason, then again you cut him. But an edge rusher at nearly a minimum contract, that’s quite the deal and well worth any risk. I’m kind of surprised in an age where DE’s are getting $7-mil/year when they’re barely a starter no one took a shot at giving him like a $4mil/2 year (total) deal. If you miss… well just think of it this way, Evan Smith is making $4.5-mil this year alone. If you hit, then you got one of the best deals in football.

  3. SB Says:

    #Depth!

  4. NCMike Says:

Depend on him as much as I depend on tmax being good at player evaluations! 😂

  5. DallasBuc Says:

Since he’s the most productive end we’ve seen around here since Michael Bennett can you blame fans for wanting him back?
Sad state of affairs but don’t put any blame on the GM

  6. SB Says:

    What NCMike said x3😁😁😁😁😁

  7. mike10 Says:

How about we keep him off the field for Special Teams this year… so you can’t bash him for getting injured

  8. LakeLandBuc Says:

Good, we need him. He’s our best pass rusher. 13.5 sacks in 18 starts, hopefully he stays healthy through out the season.

  9. Capt.Tim Says:

Sad, but I gotta agree with DallASSbuc .
    I love Jac.
But when a Tub guy gets that much love from the fan base-
Something is rotten in Dallassbuc, Err, Denmark

It stinks. And its stunk for years.
Its not Licht’s fault- but hehas to fix it. And fix it for years to come

We have to get at least one pass rushing DE this draft!!!!
Its a joke, how long its gone unaddressed.

And I hope Jac plays in all 16 games, and gets twenty sacks!!
And stays healthy the rest of his career

  10. Gencoimports Says:

Glad he will be back but Priority remains to draft another edge rusher.

  11. SB Says:

Let us hope that it is Derek Barnett Genco.

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

I hate that the NFL allows players to dive at knees, especially O linemen. I see it so often and it hurts to watch.

  13. Gencoimports Says:

Barnett would be a good pick SB

  14. NFLNut Says:

The so-called “innocent” girl JOE MIXON decked forgave him and all is now well … interesting:

  15. Tampabayucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo loves having Hacquies back……and Haquizz and we need Howard Hones and George Hohnson…….all will be good for da Bucs”

  16. Blake_bucsfan Says:

“From our private discussions I am satisfied that we are going to put this behind us and work towards helping others who may have found themselves in similar C I R C U M S T A N C E S. I greatly appreciate his apology and I think the feelings he expressed were sincere. We both could have handled things differently. I believe if we had a chance to go back to that moment in time, the situation would not have ended the way it did.

“I’m finished talking about what happened that night with Joe. It’s time to move on from that. I wish Joe the best of luck in his future.”

Now if only grown men on a blogging site were this mature. If she is capable of accepting his remorse, then we all should be.

    ……….. Also Joe, it’s a down right disgrace that I can’t use words like A C C U M U L A T E or C I R C U M V E N T just because they contain a certain 3 letter word. C’mon man, get your profanity filter fixed.

  17. DoNUTS Says:

I dont think JS makes this team.

  18. Hawk Says:

One thing the Bucs have going for them, is that Jacquies Smith will be very motivated to put a good season on film. If he wishes to stay in the NFL (and make LOTS of money), he cannot have another season in the whirlpool. If Smith has the ‘drive’, the Bucs will reap the benefits.

  19. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Money works in mysterious ways..

  20. DallasBuc Says:

    And there you have it…
    Make Mixon a Buc

  21. NFLNut Says:

^ I definitely think this improves Mixon’s draft position … but again, I think we’d have to take him at #19 as I don’t think he’ll be there when we pick in the 2nd round … and I doubt they even consider taking him at #19 over Dalvin or Christian Mac …

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Do not take Mixon. He’s not the right fit here.

  23. JonBuc Says:

Smith has flashed…playoff teams need players on the back end of the roster to make a few key plays in tight games. I think Smith is capable…

  24. SCBucFan Says:

J Smith is legit when healthy. Doesn’t have to play every down though. Bring him back gradually and he’s an asset to the depth chart. I like the move, plus he can possibly mentor the youngins that’ll be drafted. Go Bucs! Here we come South Beeyotch!!!!

  25. Bill Says:

Just another event that sets the Bucs up to take BPA. I love Licht! Awesome job.

  26. tdtb2015 Says:

Perine and Mack will be Buccaneers!

  27. Joe Says:

How about we keep him off the field for Special Teams this year… so you can’t bash him for getting injured

Joe has never met any professional athlete who wants to get hurt. Some guys are prone to getting hurt. So when a guy has a demonstrated pattern for getting hurt, to ignore that and bank your hopes on said player being healthy borders on irresponsible.

Not sure Smith not playing special teams is the magic wand here.

  28. Pick6 Says:

back on special teams you go, Jacquies. Between Ayers, Spence, Gholston, and whoever we draft, Smith is destined for limited action unless someone (other than him) gets hurt

  29. Stu Says:

I thought Smith was a restricted FA?

  30. danr Says:

Btw unless I missed it no where in that link you posted did it say she forgave him… for breaking 4 bones in her face.

  31. Trubucfan22 Says:

It would be great to get a top end talented DE in the draft. But if we didnt get one, i wouldnt be too worried.

With Ayers and Gholston as our starters and Spence and Smith as our Pass rushers. I am fairly confident in this group to do well. Probably no 10 sack performances, yet again. But the defense can thrive if these guys can stay healthy. But once again, and every down elite talent at DE would be a blessing if the bucs have the opportunity to get one. At 19, im guessing those guys will be gone but who knows. Can’t wait to see who the bucs take wih the pick. I’m ready for some football!

  32. USFBUC Says:

That news about Mixon may have just pushed him to the first round. We just need to trade those future picks and make my draft dreams come true! Cook/Stevenson or Mixon/Perine combo would be a brutal backfield.

  33. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I really like Jac Smith, but id say he’s in danger of not making the team. If Licht brings in a couple more DEs with potential his back will be against the wall and special teams will play a part in the decision. The NFL is harsh.

  34. USFBUC Says:

@danr she said she is moving on an acknowledged that she made a mistake too that night and should have handled things differently. That’s pretty much forgiving also the payday they negotiated behind closed doors without her attorneys getting a cut probably helps her forgive too. Besides did you see what she was suing for?

Some of the comments are this site emotionally distress me but I’m not filing any lawsuits. The whole thing was a play to get money.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Watch the video of Mixon punching a girl in the face and then make excuses like she hit him first – you know because of a 100lb girl slaps the side of your neck you should punch them as hard you can in the face.

The guy is garbage. I’d actually be on his side if he had slapped her at about 15% power – but responding to that situtation by punching her square in the face – it tells me he’s bacially tarded and lacks the intelligence to be a productive member of society. The guy isn’t Talib, he’s not picking fights with men, or shooting convicted sex offenders stalking his sister – this dope hauled off and punched a girl in the face then talked about how it wasn’t his fault. How you dopes want Martin, a guy who everyone says is a good guy and the only All-Pro running back in team history – you want him chased out of town because you think he’s a bad guy – yet you want to bring in this trash. Makes no sense.

  36. Joe Says:

I thought Smith was a restricted FA?

Yep. And the deadline for other teams to sign him was 4 p.m. Friday. No teams took the bait. So Smith basically will be playing for the Bucs or sitting out the season.

  37. Pickgrin Says:

I hope Jac Smith earns a big fat contract with his play this year. He was easily our best pass rusher towards the end of the year 2 years ago.

Remember when Luke Stocker couldn’t stay healthy his 1st 3 years and he got basically the same treatment from the Joe’s. Disbelief – constant tub cliches etc.? Now, 3 years later – Stocker is considered a valuable member of our team because the constant injuries were curtailed. Sometimes players just have bad luck for 2 or 3 years straight with injuries and then shine when they are able to stay healthy. It does happen. Hell – many were ready to label GMC a total bust because he had serious arm injuries end his seasons his 1st 2 years in the league.

I’m pulling for ya Jacquies. Hope the knee heals well enough to go full on in TC.

  38. Bill Says:

The Bucs will not be drafting Mixon, we’re not that desperate.

We’re a 9-7 team with an improving QB, a young OL, and a defense led by an outstanding DC. Why would we draft a guy like Mixon? Somebody will, but it won’t be TB.

  39. Bird Says:

Happy for jack smith. He has over 4 months to get healthier. Would be great to start him slow in a rotation. Which they have plenty of guys to do just that. No special teams ever again. Limit his practices and keep fingered crossed cause if healthy (and that is a big if), the guy can ball in pass rush situations

  40. Brandon Says:

He’s not an unrestricted free agent. He is restricted which is why he stays a Buccaneer.

  41. Kevin Says:

    First pick DE

  42. Phreakybucfan Says:

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst. Just sayin’

  43. USFBUC Says:

You guys still hating Mixon are just being silly now, the girl moves on, she admitted she was also responsible for escalating the situation, and wants to move on. And the Bucs are that desperate at RB that they need to draft the best guy they can.

  44. Tut Says:

3-4 D line is setting up nicely

  45. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Jack Smith is obviously the candidate this year with the biggest swing in potential.
He could end up camp meat and IR again…or he could break out with a healthy season.

I think what intrigues everybody is the way he played when healthy. Who can forget NO…he took over that game. But we also remember the injuries……

  46. Rod Munch Says:

USFBUC – Haha… the girl moves on after she gets a huge cash settlement. Mixon is a low IQ piece of trash, that’s what you are when you punch a hundred pound girl in a face after you claim she assaulted you first – which consisted of a slap to the side of the neck. As I said had he slapped her back or gave her a good backhand I’d actually maybe sort of be on his side if he did it at like 15% power, but he didn’t. This isn’t a he said / she said deal, this isn’t a gray deal, this isn’t he used a naughty word deal, this isn’t a I drank 3 beers and I’m perfectly fine but just got a DUI deal – this isn’t even a Ray Rice deal where he marries the chick and they were both completely drunk – and Ray Rice never played again. I’m not in the every player needs to be a boy scout crowd, heck Warren Sapp is my favorite player ever, but Mixon is garbage, when you punch a girl in the face as hard as you can and claim that she punched him first (which she didn’t, she slapped him in the neck and yes, that’s a huge difference), that he spreads around that she said something ‘racial’, that he was forced into this situation by her actions, then a week before the draft you sign a cash settlement to make it go away and then claim she apologizes for her role, give it a break, the guy is garbage.

  47. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    TJ Watt

    Superstar…bank on it

  48. Rob Says:

Love Jack and definitely think we should keep him on the roster. BUT, we’re getting to the point where we only have some many roster spots at d-line. i want to draft a younging but at some point we have to push one of our average guys out unfortunately.
