49ers Make A Move On Jacquies Smith

The film looks real good on Bucs defensive end Jacquies Smith — when he’s healthy.

However, good health has been a challenge for Smith, who recorded 13 1/2 sacks through the 2014 and 2015 seasons in limited duty.

In what some might call a controversial responsibility for an effective pass rusher, Smith ran down on a kickoff in the season opener last year and blew out his knee after an injury-plagued 2015 season.

But the Bucs, apparently, like his rehabilitation progress and last month offered him a restricted free agency tender salary of about $1.8 million for 2017. The 49ers, though, have made a move on him, per NFL Network. He’s visiting the general manager John Lynch’s Niners now.

NFL rules say if the 49ers make Smith a better offer, then the Bucs get a shot to match it, or they lose Smith.

Smith turned 27 last week and spoke glowingly about his ACL rehab while speaking on WTAN-AM 1340 in December. A lot can change quickly with a knee rehab, but the 49ers’ interest could mean Smith’s healing is still moving along well.

This doesn’t surprise Joe. Pass rushers in the NFL get paid, and teams will search for them anywhere. It makes sense for a team to gamble on Smith’s recovery for, say, $2 million.

If anything, this could be good news for the Bucs. A healthy Smith is quite an asset.

2 mil is peanuts Bucs would match that in a heart beat.

  2. unbelievable Says:

Yea even w/ his injury history, that’s very little money.

Hope the Bucs keep him. Maybe we’ll draft another DE but right now we’re pretty thin at that position, especially in terms of guy who can actually rush the passer.

Keep him off damn kick returns and this guy will be very effective in sub packages for us! Do your work Licht!

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Is this payback from John Lynch, for cutting him ?

  4. Joeypoppems Says:

If they choose not to resign him at least that gives us a reason to go DE early in the draft

  5. CocoaBchBuc Says:

I personally don’t think it is ‘payback’. I think it is Mr Lynch being diligent and doing the job he is getting paid to do. Just a random thought.

  6. Joeypoppems Says:

*choose not to match the offer

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    The problem with Jaq……

    …is he’s a “one trick” pony

…….just a pure pass rusher. ….sucks big booty chunks against the run

    …..that and he’s always hurt 🙁

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

More like Lynch seeing the depleted squad he is now GM of. Niners had their glory days, time to bask in the woes of the 49ers. I’m basking.

  9. BradentonBuc Says:

For the love of god I hope we retain him. Situational pass rusher or not, he has great energy and decent numbers. The fact that we found him in the trash pillar after Buffalo cut him speaks to the rarity of the situation when it comes to quality pass rushers just sitting out there for the picking. With all the cap space we have, plus the question mark that is Noah Spence’s shoulder (one hell of a warrior but still a question mark, if not more so because he PLAYED on a bum shoulder most of the year), it would be selfish of the Bucs to not at least match the offer. As long as it’s not some kind of multi-year deal with outrageous money that would eat up space for Jaboo, Mike Evans, Kwon and Ali

  10. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

    They better keep him

  11. Mort Says:

Bucs could have just put a second round tender on him and this discussion wouldn’t even happen. But they gambled and might just lose him.

  12. Joeypoppems Says:

There is nothing wrong with being just a pass rusher and only playing. But if he is injured he won’t play obviously. If he can’t play he can be released.

  13. USFBUC Says:

I wouldn’t call the DE position thin, we have Ayers, Gholston, Spence, and Smith plus some others. We will match the offer to Smith.

  14. Al121976 Says:

Re-sign him and then trade him for a 4th

  15. Trubucfan22 Says:

When the one trick your one trick pony knows, is pass rush. You have a very valuable pony.

  16. Bigbucs1 Says:

Resign him- you know what happened when we let one guy with only 8 sacks a season go? Oh yeah he became one of the most constant passrushers in the league. He left for peanuts, let’s not do that again- and for those that say we have depth at the position, we also had depth at rb last year, look what happened. Cant ever have enough!- smith still young much like Bennett was then.

Thank you..a common sense post..Keep him Licht!

And guys don’t forget the difference between re-sign and resign..

He needs to re-sign his contract..

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

Thats what backup players do, They play special teams!!!! And that is what Jacquies Smith does, he gets hurt!!!

  19. bucfancocacolagoodtimes Says:

see yah good luck hope you can play more than a few games next season

  20. TampaTown Says:

It’s nothing like letting Michael Bennett get away but I think we should pay him what it takes to keep him.

  21. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

    @Joe
Sounds like this would be a good 12 or 24 hour poll topic. You already know Lynch is going to make Smith a better offer, do us Buc fans want Licht to match it no matter what, which I’m of the opinion being HELL YES. Personally have all the love and respect in the world for #47, but BACK THE F!CK OFF & GO DO UR JOB SOMEWHERE ELSE LYNCH, DAM.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

Why is this even news the unreliable bum is never on the field ever. The bucs got better if he left. Bucs need to stop gambling on unreliable bums. Jac Smith is irrelevant

  23. BigHogHaynes Says:

^^^^that proved you don’t know BO! Re/sign him and then trade him for a 4 h round pick or not…. STOP letting players walk away….BUILD THE DAMN WALL! …this guy is not a bum.

  24. tmaxcon Says:

Bighog Jac Smith has no value and is 100% unreliable your crack pipe needs cleaning again

  25. Bigbucs1 Says:

Yeah let him walk!!! Then our guys get hurt and we got nothing- he isn’t demanding money, he is getting offers. I don’t understand the bum comments. Also this very similar to Bennett – gen has potential and shown flashes, bennett got better because he got help- let’s see what he can do

  26. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

For 2 mil we would be stupid to let him walk. He is made for 3rd down not kickoffs. Him and Spawn at DE with Ayers and McCoy at DT on 3rd and long! We can drop 7 and rush 4 and be effective doing so. Throw in TJ Watt in the draft and we would be set for years at DL and LB. Draft a CB/S in the 2nd and we good bruv!

  27. Bill Says:

I think it’d take more than 2M a year for SF to grab him. We put a 1.8 tender on him….I’d say we’re looking at 3-4 if another team is sniffing around. That’s a gamble SF can take, and maybe we don’t.

  28. mike10 Says:

I can’t see another Michael Bennett situation, esp going to JohnLynch

  29. The Buc Realist Says:

    @bighogheinous

Confucius say, cannot build wall with pebbles and loose stones!!!!!

  30. unbelievable Says:

Yea, the guy’s got 14 sacks and 4 forced fumbles in only 18 starts, 27 games played total.

Why would we want a productive guy like that, who can be had for peanuts tmaxipad? So many other productive pass rushers on the team, oh wait…

  31. ElioT Says:

They can’t let Smith go, unless the 9ers ore offering stupid money. I would keep him around at $3-4mil/year.

No team can have enough pass rushers, especially the Bucs.

Let’s keep this freaking D-line stacked for once, Jesus.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

Reliability is key. Sure save him to work 15 since he can only manage 16 quarters a year or so. You people do realize how valuable practice reps are with new CBA don’t you. Wasting reps on a guy that YOU KNOW FOR SURE IS UNRELIABLE is a great way for bucs to remain irrelevant. Stop falling in love with flash in the pan injury prone nobody’s the goal is to win not field a roster full of charity cases

  33. redblud Says:

TMaxCon, I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. You have to have something lose and or missing in your head. You may be the most disrespectful poster I know in any website. I don’t comment much, but I read everything.

As for Smith, the guy is a valuable pass rusher, only cost money(money that we won’t use this year anyway), and if nothing else, provides depth. Why would you let him walk. There is zero reason. Now if the 49ers get stupid and make a ridiculous offer with more than one year, then you let him walk.

Bum? Between you and Smith, I only see one bum.

  34. tmaxcon Says:

If disrespectful means that I have higher standards and expectations I’ll take that all day…I’ll take wins you keep your unreliable feel good stories. Wins matter and unreliable players don’t win consistently
