Indoor Practice Facilities – you guys are missing the mark on this topic.

I work for a construction company who just built the UGA indoor practice facility and was part of the management team on the project here in Athens, GA. So I speak from first-hand that it ain’t just about “weather” (though that is the obvious reason) why you build these things:

    1. It’s a recruiting tool (college is admittedly somewhat different than pros), but could help recruit free agents looking for top-of-class amenities, which 1 Buc place could remain in that category with an indoor added.

    2. The climate control aspects of being able to reduce humidity (not just temperature) are scientifically proven to reduce recovery time and stamina. Again, more important in college where they are restricted to 20 practice hours a week, and thus need to maximize time to the seconds. Practicing in the elements may have its “hardening” advantages, but you can’t argue against lighting and heat stroke.

    3. Security. Big issue at UGA, because all the practice fields are easily visible to the public. Likely not the case at 1 Buc, but any team with one wouldn’t have to worry about peeping toms if they were in a secure facility.

    4. Artificial Turf. How many stadiums in the NFL are natural grass vs. artificial? This now gives another stadium setting to simulate during practice for upcoming game conditions.

    5. UGA did some unique things too in having a giant video board that can display play-diagrams, video-replay, or just hype videos. Also they installed state of the art surround-sound system and lighting to simulate away-game crowd conditions (better than any outdoor field ever could) and the ability to blast music.

This stuff matters. It’s why UGA just spent $30mil plus to build the latest and greatest in the SEC.

This podcast would be much better without Lee. Much better chemistry with Steve and Ira! Lee should stay in the background as far as Ira’s podcasts!

A+ effort by the Joes and Mr. Kaufman. This has become one of my favorite podcasts to listen to on any subject. I don’t agree with Hig’s comments above. Keep up the great work!
