“Troubling”

Yes, running back and wide receiver are critical areas for the Bucs to upgrade this offseason.

But to read the words of an NFL insider, a third area the Bucs may want to start researching is kicker.

Less than a year before Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht made a bold move and traded up into the second round to draft kicker Roberto Aguayo, Mike Sando of BSPN stopped just short of calling the transaction a failed project.

The surprising decision to use a third-round pick for kicker Roberto Aguayo could have been dubious even if he had made every field goal try. It became troubling when Aguayo missed a league-high six times from 40-49 yards while ranking last among 35 qualifying kickers in overall percentage, just below Blair Walsh and Chandler Catanzaro.

Perhaps this is why Bucs coach Dirk Koetter wanted competition for Aguayo, and why he got it recently. Could there be yet another kicker signing on the way?

Maybe, just maybe, getting pushed by another kicker is just the elixir Aguayo needs to be an NFL kicker?

  2. Tampa Tony Says:

One of Licht’s biggest mistakes was not bringing in a vet to help this kid mentally prepare. His leg combined with Jameis’s turnovers kept this team out of the playoffs

  3. BuccaneerByBirth Says:

Undrafted kickers are a dime a dozen. Get some competition for him. Hope he works out, if not oh well

  4. DB55 Says:

Go BIG or go home, that goes for fck ups too. I’m confident he can correct his accuracy issues but not at all confident he can make’m for 50+ and let’s face it that’s what wins playoff games.

Call Jason Elam and see what he’s up to next spring.

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Why of why are we still talking about this joe?????

  6. chipbuc Says:

Tampa Tony even with a article about Aguayo he manages to work in Winston’s name. Oh i forgot he’s the voice of reason. What a piece of work TT is!!!!

  7. Tampa Tony Says:

Chipbuc- I’m always here to educate the uninformed

    Leg Of Death

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

    Well played ’87!
Lets hope this kid gets it together. It’s troubling to me that his career long is 43 yards.
Not-For-Long (NFL) if he doesn’t get it right!

  10. ndog Says:

So Tony are you sure it had nothing to do with our Defense allowing 37 points to the RAMS at home or 43 points to the Falcons at home which by the way in those games combined Jameis had exactly one pick. The uninformed my ***! Its a team game everyone takes credit or blame for the results.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

ndog…one could easily say losing Vjax and not having a solid RB is the reason they didn’t make it too. One could easily say what you said. One could easily say that they are just not ready yet. One easily say….

Tony always has to take pot shots at JW. It’s what he comes here for mostly. I don’t even reply anymore and I’m Winston’s biggest bff.lol

    Just let him go.

  12. Waterboy Says:

Lol TT so are you saying that with another QB instead of Jameis the team would’ve been in the playoffs?

  13. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m not sure I follow this debate. It is what it is.

Either Ohnono gets a great sports shrink and gets over his yips….or it’s see ya.

I don’t think competition has anything to do with it. He’s not missing because he’s too lazy to practice, or focus, or doesn’t want to win enough.

I hate to use the C word with athletes but it seems to me he is simply CHOKING.

Many of those kicks were actually well struck but just a bit off line…it wasn’t like he was shanking them he choked them.

Winston has never been an accurate qb and by most accounts ,Winston was the 2nd best qb in the draft. As a season tkt holder lets hope Mr. Winston realizes their are no wideouts close to 10ft tall

  15. Joe Says:

Winston has never been an accurate qb and by most accounts

    You sure about that?

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

@ben- I can live with his inaccuracy, for now. Consider he’s a 2nd year guy with only 1 legit weapon this year. He needs to continue working, for sure, but I like what I’ve seen.
I don’t know about 2nd best. The 2 have different styles and leadership qualities. That said, I doubt that the Titans are regretting picking Mariota. Time will tell, they will always be linked.

  17. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Ben

How about some facts? Winston has never been an accurate qb and by most accounts ,Winston was the 2nd best qb in the draft.

And we believe this because you say so? Are you talking pre draft OPINIONS?

Certainly not the facts after two years of play.

#3 was 11th ranked as a rookie and 12th ranked last year.
MM was 24th ranked as a rookie and 23rd ranked last year.

MM passes for a completion rate of 62% as a rookie dropped to 61% last year.
#3 passes for a competion rate of 58% as a rookie and improved to 60.8%

Man when a meme develops it’s hard to kill eh. #3 was just as accurate as MM last year and in both of his years he totally eclipsed his yards passed…

MM throws fewer TD’s over two years but also fewer ints so that’s pretty much a wash.

I watched #3 overthrow receivers as well…I also saw ints that were clearly not his fault…I saw perfect passes dropped.

The only QB I enjoy watching nearly as much as #3 is Aaron Rodgers. Entertainment factor actually counts for me. Brady is great…I find him incredibly boring both on and off the field…I like #3 and Rodgers.

  18. theodore Says:

Aguayo had to kick in thunder and lightning and wind and rain! No fair to criticize him!

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

@Stpete- I have to agree about Rodgers. The dude is lightning in a bottle!

  20. salish_seamonster Says:

Definitely Licht’s worst move. Even if Roberto figures out how to make ’em from 40-55, it’s still too high a price when you can get perfectly good kickers off the street.

  21. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I thought the Mariota lovers had finally conceded. I guess Ben is still holding out hope for his favorite Titan.

  22. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I have heard many say an athlete’s greatest attribute is availability. One is much more durable then the other. I will let you try to figure out who wins that category Ben.

  23. ben Says:

yes M.M. got hurt and played in less games but is still has a higher qb rating(barley)…with no #1 receiver or tight end but a good running attack and a new head coach . I didn’t go to Florida so my views are not centered about the school. I hope the bucs make the playoff’s and the nfl rates Winston as the man in the future

  24. Bucluv55 Says:

Ben… so Delaine Walker isn’t a #1 TE?!? 65/800/7, 8th in catches, 6th in yards and only 1 TE with more td’s….. our very own Cam Brate. Good argument though….You do know we’re talking football, right? You might be on the wrong site…

  25. Waterboy Says:

    @Ben
Don’t forget that the Bucs strength of schedule was top 5 where as Tennessee’s strength of schedule was 23rd.

M.M. looks a lot better than I predicted coming out of college but he’s the only QB beside Tim Tebow that I remember watching throw for less than 10 completions and a 100 yds in a game and still win. That running game opened up the passing game for them because teams had to stack the box to stop Murray and Henry.

  26. DB55 Says:

Not only the running game which is a MAJOR KEY but 90% of his passes are 5yards beyond the LOS.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Lost me at “third round”…

  28. Rod Munch Says:

That ESPN writer is a moron, not only did he say “third round” for kicker, he also failed to mention the two most important FA’s that the Bucs signed, Brent Grimes and Robert Ayers. I don’t actually disagree with the total grade being a C because of kicker and what’s his face at LG who never played, to not even mention it and get the round wrong when you’re a professional writer and not a blogger, well it sort of makes you look like a dummy.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Exactly.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Just wondering…anyone know how many times Aguayo actually had to attempt a kick over 45 yards?

  31. Jimmy T Says:

You guys keep critcizing Jameis ut makes zero sense. The guy just finished his senior year basically and has led this team significantly. How would u like to be a Texan fan?
