Derrick Brooks Goes All-In On 2017

Big call from legendary No. 55

Big call from legendary No. 55

In a somewhat stunning move, Mr. Derrick Brooks, surely the Tampa Bay area’s most NFL-knowledgeable man, put his cards on the table for the 2017 season.

A measured, think-first speaker who pegged the Bucs for an 8-8 season in 2016, Brooks told the WDAE-AM 620 audience yesterday that he sees January glory for Tampa Bay next season.

“I don’t expect [the Bucs] to be idle this time next year, Brooks said. “I’m going on the record 364 days in advance, 365, whatever you want to call it. I expect them to be in the first round [of the playoffs]. I expect them to be in the divisional round, whether by Wild Card win or a No. 3- or 4-seed win.

“Now to say they’re going to be No. 2 with a bye, I’m not ready to stretch my arms that far out without seeing a few more moves this offseason. But based on the nucleus of what’s coming back, based on what I’ve seen thus far, and a deeper evaluation, … I’m comfortable [predicting this.]”

Whoa! Powerful stuff there from Brooks — in January! Read that again. Brooks is calling for a playoff victory.

This tells Joe that Brooks thoroughly believes the culture at One Buc Palace has changed, completely flipped. And that’s why Joe is most excited.

Every Bucs fans should be celebrating at Abe’s Place today like Joe did last night. Man, Joe is so pumped for that free agency dinner bell to ring in exactly eight weeks.

Yep I never make predictions THIS early.

I looked at what’s coming back too and saw playoffs.

So I’m in line with Brooks. Gotta see what unfolds in the offseason.

  2. Destinjohnny Says:

    They have to many holes.

  3. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Poe
    Pryor
    LG if possible
    Addison
    Britt/Stills/Jackson
    Murray
I know that’s ALOT to ask for Licht, but damn it get close please!!! We have the loot. We’re so close. Yes you have to buy the ring in 17 but damn we could truly draft BPA and earn it 18

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

Why did Mr Brooks lay out his prediction??? Its because he saw what this team did against all the division leading and playoff caliber teams!!!!! In 2015 the Bucs only had wins against teams that ended up drafting ahead of them and atlanta who were playing their 4th and 5th sting tackles!!!!!

In 2016 The Bucs hung with and Beat some of the better teams in the NFL!!!!!
So much improvement!!! So much Fun to be a BUCS fan again!!!!!!!!

    Coaching Improvement Indeed!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Buc1987

If memory servers correctly, That was your prediction before the 2015 draft!!!!

Credit where credit is due to you sir!!!!!

    Exciting times indeed!!!!!

    Go BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. M.Stevbobucfan Says:

I am with you Brooks. ….iam going on the record as of 1/12/017 as saying I think the bucs will win at least one playoff game. ….just look at what the team did this year we could have easily went 11 – 5 if not for young team mistakes

  7. The bucfan 88 Says:

Brooks said that okay that means something Joe remember we went 10-6 & everyone in Tampa was saying we are going to the playoffs but brooks said no they are not well he was right that year & now brooks open his mouth people go to the games and support you Bucs we are on the rise

  8. Dave Pear Says:

    @Buc1987,

Hmmm…I seem to remember you “predicting” that we would Win the Superbowl in year 3 if we were to draft Mr. Jameis Winston.
Not just make it to the playoffs. But WIN THE SUPERBOWL!
Have you forgotten that? Because I haven’t.

  9. 813bucboi Says:

    I hope he’s right….GO BUCS!!!!

  10. pick6 Says:

the difference between this year and years past is that the roster and the on-field competitiveness will give us a crack at some of those Free Agents who care more about winning than going to the highest bidder

  11. Buc1987 Says:

Realist…close, I said any team that drafts JW will be in the SB within 3 years of him entering the league. Not just playoffs.

I have a sneaky feeling they might go deep into next years playoffs. Perhaps all the way, we’ll see. The offseason and all.

If they make it to the NFC Champ game. Then I deserve at least a cookie for being so damn close. 🙂

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Jameis and I are on a mission. lol

  13. Joeypoppems Says:

    My Wishlist

    Kenny Britt
    Kenny Stills
    Trumaine Johnson
    Johnathan Hankins
    Chance Wormack

    Draft
    Rd1 OJ Howard, TE
    Rd2 Jamaal Williams, RB
    Rd3 Eddie Jackson, S
    Rd4 KD Cannon, WR
    Rd5 OL depth
    Rd6 DL depth
    Rd7 BPA/ a Full Back

  14. Buc 4ever Says:

I see a 12-4 record with a few FA pickups and a smart draft. Go get Coradelle Patterson and either Kenny Stills, Kendall Wright or even Jeffries if he isn’t over priced to help Jameis on offense. Then a good run stuffer in free agency. Pickup OJ Howard or BPA and draft smart. Hopefully Sweezy will be back and move Marpet to center. If not draft Ocico. He is a big nasty beast at center.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

Yep I never make predictions THIS early.

    @Buc1987,

Which is it? You don’t make predictions this early, but over 2 years ago you “guaranteed” that who ever drafted Jameis Winston would WIN the Super Bowl.
I would go back in the archives and find your numerous quotes on this if I knew of an easy way to do it.
Why don’t you do it for me. you always seem to find guys old quotes to show how they have said things they now deny.

The Bucs did instantly last year when NFL GM Licht called coach my scheme in the night!!!!!!!!

    Go BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Negative Jeff Says:

Hold your horses Mr. Derrick Brooks….Playoffs? That’s a bit of a stretch. Absolutely Brutal Schedule next year. Guaranteed losses all over it. Sorry Bucs Fans, but they’re not beating the Patriots unless Tom Brady dies during sex with his perfect wife. I see 8-8 unless the Bucs are extremely aggressive in Free Agency. And I don’t trust the Glazers to spend the money. Winston needs another year to mature and correct his mechanics and to gel with all the new free agents that Light should be bringing in. 2018 is the Bucs year to shine! Go 2018!

You’re always so damn technical. So let me rephrase that for you seeing how you’re confused as usual.

I never make record predictions this early or predict how next season will go for the Bucs.

Does that clear things up for you? I hope so.

  21. Doolnutts Says:

I like the team, coaches and GM. If we somehow can keep smitty for one more year I think it will go a long way with all the players finally getting used to one system that works.

  22. The Buc Realist Says:

Buc1987 last “record” prediction was that Guns-n-Roses would go triple-platinum!!!!!!!

  23. Waterboy Says:

I also predicted 8-8 last year and agree with Brooks but I’ll need to see what Licht does this off-season before I’ll fully commit to that.

  24. PaBucsfan Says:

@negativeJeff I bet you’re the same type of person that “GUARANTEED” losses when Tampa played Seatte or Kansas City as well… You can’t guarantee a win or a loss. You have to play the game. I’m not gonna get into a debate with you because I absolutely hate talking sports with people like you.

  25. The Buc Realist Says:

    @PaBucsfan

Maybe NegativeJeff is kobe liar and he just now lived up to his bet that if Bucs Beat KC that he would never post on JBF again as Kobe liar!!!!!

  26. Mojiska Says:

I have to see improvements in the wr and dl position before I can vall playoffs with confidence. I am always hoping for playoffs, but there needshould to be improvement in those areas for it to be more than a pipe dream. Poe and cardelle/ pryor in fa, Solomon and juju in draft. Pick up Joe mixon late!

  27. orlbucfan Says:

I, for one, refuse to argue with a Buccaneer HOFamer. That said, I also predicted 8-8 last and this season. Bucs went 9-7 with a 5-game win streak that included such NFL luminaries as Seattle and Kansas City. Hmmm, 10-6, 11-5? Have to always factor in Buc (bad) Luck. We’ll see.

  28. 808BUCS Says:

We definitely need improvement on the OL as well. Don’t know how long Winston would be able to take the pounding he took this year. He goes down kiss 2017 season good bye. We wont even smell the playoffs.

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

87 I’m with you let’s just win the whole damn thing

  30. Stpetebucsfan Says:

@87 You more than anyone else convinced me to toss in with #3 as the draft pick. As I’ve told you before you were right.

You’ve placed so many of your chips on the table with #3 I’m hardly going to nitpick you if we only win a Conference title next year and not the SB.

I do not think DB’s prediction is bold at all. Glad to have his confirmation though

I know all the reasons we can’t get these guys but just imagine…if we signed Pryor and Berry in FA…Berry likely stays in KC and Cleveland MAY have the inside track on Pryor but its not out of the question.

If we then drafted Cook and used the rest of our picks on BPA for either line our team would be pretty efffing scary.

6-4 wideouts…one with blazing speed…good possession receivers in Hump and Brate…a running back that can literally run away from DB’s if we get him the space…and he can catch the ball…

If Licht found a 2nd round OL like either Smith or Marpet and Sweezy gets healthy our line is not only talented but deep.

This is the first draft I can remember we didn’t have lopsided needs at one or two positions. We are now in the process of upgrading across the board except at QB. I think we finally have our foundation.

  31. MadMax Says:

Im thinking we just might be able to draft Davis at 19. The mocks have changed a lot over the week. My DE Barnett is out of reach. So is Solomon.

So w/o knowing wth the FA period will bring in:

    1st – WR Corey Davis
    2nd – DE Taco Charlton
3rd – (may have to move up) TE Jordan Leggett
    4th – RB Perine

  32. Buc1987 Says:

Max…I like Davis at 19 too.

So that’s all that matters. lol

  33. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

I think solomon thomas is a late riser. But I was one if the 1st on board with drafting this kid. He WAS projected to be a 2nd round guy. I think now he is a mid to late 1st round guy. The scouts say he is not very football smart tho. With Stanford he only had 1 gap assignment or he was running stunts. He cant really read formations, but that can be taught up. I dont think he will be a year 1 impact player, he will take a few years to develop. Corey Davis or Solomon Thomas? I’m taking Davis every day of the week. Pj fleck (W Michigan head coach, and our former wr coach) said that Davis is the 2nd hardest worker he has ever seen. Behind VJax

  34. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    @ madmax
    No to perine
Take Joe Mixon in the 3rd if his character checks out.
Take Jake Butt in the 4th with his torn ACL sit him for a year and BAM 1st round talents in round 3 and 4. (Man am I good or am I good?)

    – This vid has me fired-up for next season already…..the offseason is entirely too long.

  36. Pickgrin Says:

We got to experience a bit of the excitement of what having a legit contender feels like this year. The team wasn’t consistent enough or deep enough to close the deal and advance to the playoffs in 2016 – but the next 10+ years are likely to be a LOT of fun for Bucs fans.

We need more talent in a # of starting spots and we need better depth at even more spots – but the young nucleus of this team (Winston, Evans, Marpet, Kwon, VH3, Noah Spence) gives great hope for what’s to come.

  37. Red86 Says:

Too soon. It depends on Mike Smith and some good pick up during the off season for me to agree with this.

  38. MadMax Says:

I hear ya 87! Hopefully we hit that #1 need with the BPA at 19 with Corey.

Goat, no to Mixon, Im sorry, just dont need that kind of cancer on our team. Butt I could deal with though. Hate he was injured and hate chancing on injured players, but a late rounder, Im all for it.

  39. ME13 Says:

Terrelle P Cordelle P Mr Poe JPP IM like the P in pewter!!! Then 1stRd lets get some juice OJ Howard !! You know our GM loves a good trade!! Trade back up in the 1st an get a S to go wit the Tandyman !!! Resign our top gunners an Goldson an Bradly Mc for depth at S!!!
