Dirk Koetter, Third In Class

January 12th, 2017

koetterrightstareWhen Team Glazer made the right call to end the Lovie Smith regime, it had a big hiring decision to make, one that would be judged in various ways.

One method of evaluating the call to hire Dirk Koetter is how he fared — and will fare — against the other head coaches hired last year.

Here’s how the 2016 class shook out.

Ben McAdoo, Giants (11-5, + playoff loss)
Adam Gase, Dolphins (10-6, + playoff loss)
Dirk Koetter, Bucs (9-7)
Mike Mularkey, Titans (9-7)
Doug Pederson, Eagles (7-9)
Chip Kelly, 49ers (2-14, + fired)
Hue Jackson, Browns (1-15)

Collectively, it was a damn impressive performance, especially the first-time head coaches like Koetter, McAdoo, Gase and Peterson. Four of the seven were winners and two made the playoffs.

The cream of Lovie Smith’s 2014 coaching class, Jim Caldwell in Detroit (11-5 in Year 1) and Bill O’Brien in Houston (9-7), are still in place, as are Mike Zimmer (Minnesota) and Jay Gruden (Washington). All have been to the playoffs.

But I thought Dirk Koetter = Jim Tomsula right?

Joe you’re being a “loser” for saying he did anything impressive. Just ask 813Bucboi – he’s a real winner and can teach us all how to be winners by talking down any accomplishment the team made

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    Chip Kelly, 49ers (2-14, + fired)

Oh what could have been. Schiano or Chip Kelly what’s the dif?

  3. Buc1987 Says:

    lol LC

  4. mike Says:

I would say awesome but Mike Mularky went 9-7 and he’s terrible

  5. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“I would say awesome but Mike Mularky went 9-7 and he’s terrible”

How do you figure? You been watching a bunch of Titans game film?

  6. BigPoppaBuc Says:

The success of Gase and the Dolphins was very surprising to me. McAdoo took over a pretty darn good team. Koetter gets credit for a culture turn and bringing in Mike Smith. The Titans are in a similar spot as us and we sure dodged a bullet missing out on Chip. Koetter’s path to Tampa is an interesting one, but I’m sure glad he’s here.

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

Start throwing in strength of schedule and it becomes even more impressive!!!!!

    Coaching improvement indeed!!!!!!! !!

    Go BUCS!!!!!!!!

  8. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Start throwing in strength of schedule and it becomes even more impressive!!!!!”

Nah man. Only “losers” look at things like that to have a balanced and realistic perspective of their team.

“Winners” think playoffs or failure every time. We have been a failure for 10 years and every year was exactly the same as the other! That’s the way to think about football and be a great fan with a great understanding of the game!

    GO BUCS! TEEHEE!

  9. Tampa Tony Says:

And to think the Rockstar wanted Chip Kelly here…

All the Loser Lovie supporters claimed it took 5-7 years for a rebuild O’Brien and other coaches have destroyed that theory

  10. The Buc Realist Says:

And to think coach my scheme was like school on martin luther king day,,,, no class!!!!

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

“The success of Gase and the Dolphins was very surprising to me. ”

They had possibly the easiest schedule in the league – with only 1 win against a team with a winning record:

    Browns
    Steelers
    Bills X 2
    Jets X 2
    Chargers
    Rams
    49ers
    Cardinals

meanwhile; the Bucs had more wins against winning teams and faced 10 opponents in the playoffs either this year or last year (vs 6 for the phins); but we only slightly improved while the Dolphins HUGELY improved because they made the playoffs and got destroyed in the wild card.

    GO BUCS lol

  12. Buc1987 Says:

    Bwhahahahaha for you Realist.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

lol…..salty because the truth hurts huh….we made slight improvement….we won three more games….when the previous staff won 4 more games than they did the year before, no one said their was improvement…and we didn’t make the playoffs….NOW people are saying we made MAJOR improvements this year even tho we witnessed 3 blow outs, coaching 101 mistakes and still missing the playoffs….I see why GMC has a big fan base…he’s brainwashed fans into thinking a “winning season” without making the playoffs IS EXCEPTABLE and we should be satisfied…..THANKFULLY theirs fans like me and players like Winston that want to make the playoffs and contend for a superbowl each and every year…..and if we don’t make the playoffs its a failed season….it aint good enough…now, have we improved?…sure “slightly”…last year we were watching other teams in the playoffs and this year IS NO DIFFERENT….dirk did a decent job and so did smitty but we still missed the playoffs….I just like Winston don’t think this was a successful season…we showed slight improvement….get over it!!!!GO BUCS!!!!

  14. 813bucboi Says:

@lord c…your such a dumba$$….do we not play this game to win a superbowl?….the only way to do that is by making the playoffs….how do you show improvement when you miss the playoffs?….MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THE FOLLOWING YEAR!!!!….why do coaches get fired?…for not making the playoffs…each year teams fight to make the playoffs…if you miss the playoffs, teammates wont say great job, you should be proud…..unless your GMC or @lord c….GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Chargers new logo remind anyone of an NHL logo?

  16. BigHogHaynes Says:

He hit me mark dead on………Now my Montra is “10 will get you in” as we continue to build, because the only thing special about to his team is JW and ME both LOVIE GUYS!

  17. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    813

when the previous staff won 4 more games than they did the year before, no one said their was improvement

I’m 69 and have an excuse for forgetting as DB55 can tell you…but 813 did you see Lovie’s last season. I must disagree with your characterization.

After Lovie’s guys beat Atlanta winning 3 of their past four and sitting at 6-6 in the playoff hunt I recall posters here being jacked. (Dallas/realist/tmax excepted they saw the writing on the wall).

Then an “improving” team just went into the tank! TOTALLY! They not only lost four in a row against some very beatable teams at home…can you say Bears, Saints..road game at the Rams….

Look at the last game of that season and see how the players phoned it in.
Look at the last game of this season…nothing on the line and see the difference.

Not too mention…are you suggesting improving from 2 wins to six is the same as improving from 6 to 9 including win over playoff teams?

Well next you’ll be telling us…”Life is like bunch of chocolates”

    Just funnin’ with ya 813

  18. Lord Cornelius Says:

lol 813 you’re going to turn into a pretzel with all that twisting..

Lovie Smith inherited a 4-12 team and averaged 4 wins per year the following 2 years lol…

I guess a coach could take a 7-9 team; tank it to 1-15; and then win 4 games the next year and you’d think that they were doing a great job lmao.

No one gives a sh1t about going from 2-14 to 5 or 6 wins. Woopady do. We’ve been a sh1tty 4-7 win type team for a decade. This was our first winning season since 2010 – as in our best season in 6 years. You want to ignore that and b1tch about the playoffs and act as if we just “slightly” improved? Cool – enjoy being in that weird extreme minority of so called “fans” that diminish any accomplishments of their team. I’ll be in the group of fans that are excited about the future because of what we just did compared to what we’ve been doing on average for a decade.

Why even watch the regular season bro? That’s a very serious question –considering all you have to do is look at the final record and whether we made the playoffs to formulate your entire opinion on this team lol. Seriously – that’s what it boils down to and why this is hilarious to me.

Hell you don’t even need to watch playoff games if we make it in – you can just check the box score to see if we won. I wouldn’t want you to stress yourself out with more information and data than you can handle. I mean watching the games might give you a more educated opinion and we simply can’t have that bro

And stop suggesting other people don’t want to make the playoffs because they have a different opinion on the team and its direction than you. You’re just being an a4shole when you say stuff like that.

  19. Lord Cornelius Says:

2016 Bucs finished 6-2, going 2-1 against 3 teams currently in the divisional rounds of the playoffs – and all 3 are legit contenders to win the whole thing

Finished allowing 17 PPG over those 8 games – which would rank top 2 for the year right behind the Seahawks; after being close to last in PPG in the 2nd year of Lovie Smith with a trend of regression and blowouts in December. The best defensive 8 game finish since the super bowl season.

Meh – they just barely improved right? I mean pff – I can’t see anything here that’s noteworthy…

What do you guys think? Maybe the team actually regressed last year and I’m just confused?

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

@813- It is disappointing NOT to make the playoffs, no doubt. That said, there’s no way that you could look at this year’s product on the field and tell me that it wasn’t better. Think about the uncontested never-ending slant passes we endured last year, think about NEVER making adjustments even when the UNTRAINED eye knew it had to be made. Think about all the drops and penalties.
Yea, we should always aim for the playoffs. But lets take a minute to recognize where we came from and how we got here. We’re better!

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Bucsfanman…813 wants to be Jameis and not just a fan.

He expected a SB run this year and anything less well….see above.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Improving from your own 2 wins to 6 wins the next season is not a winning season. Therefore you suck as a coach with all your years of experience It’s certainly NOT anywhere near a playoff team.

The Bucs were THAT close. With Lovie they were miles away with 6 wins.

  23. Joe Says:

Improving from your own 2 wins to 6 wins the next season is not a winning season.

    LOL!!!

  24. Stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW 9-7 and NOT a playoff team and why was that? Not because of the number of our wins…we won the SAME number of game against better competition than the Lions but because of some arcane NFL playoff rules the Lions got in.

Remember it wasn’t that we even needed to win another game…although doing so would have assured us…it was because we beat Carolina instead of N.O.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

I’ve watched every game the past 12 years!!!….as I said…are we better?…yeah….have we improved…yeah…SLIGHTLY…..nothing wrong with slight improvement…but if you think im jumping for joy because we finish with a winning record but still missed the playoffs then sorry….

the funny thing is, you all keep comparing last year to this year but in both seasons under 2 different coaches, we still are not in the playoffs….

I guess the bar is set so low for dirk that you guys are willing to except anything……THANKFULLY we have players like Winston and fans like me that have high standards…..

im only following our leader…JAMEIS WINSTON…..if he says this was not an successful season, then i’ll follow his lead…..I see you guys follow GMC….he’s the only player that said he is satisfied with this season….BUNCH OF LOSERS!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    answer me this….

    are we in the playoffs?

did the leader of our team, JAMEIS WINSTON suggest this was an successful season?…

nuff said….I rest my case….GO BUCS!!!!

  27. DB55 Says:

    Still luv ya ST. Pete.

  28. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Feeling’s mutual DB55…glad you’re able to put up with an old man.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    @stpete
    @87
    @bucfan
    @lord

don’t spin anything….just answer the question….are we in the playoffs?….did Winston say we made HUGE improvements or he’s satisfied with this season?….simple yes or no will be fine….GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. 813bucboi Says:

FEEL FREE TO BE A LOSER…BUT WONT…AND I KNOW OUR LEADER HAS MY BACK…..from jbf-“the passion of jameis”

Recently, Jameis mentioned that while he wanted to finish the season with a winning record, it was hardly a successful season. Not making the playoffs is a failure, he said, and thus, the season is tainted.

Today after the game, Jameis was again asked if the season, a winning season (!) was a success. He said no and moved on to the next question.

Later, Jameis was asked why he expects it to be the norm that each season the Bucs make the playoffs. Jameis recoiled in horror as if someone accused him of laying down in a game. Jameis then answered straight from the heart.

“Because why would I not think that is normal? Why would I settle for less? Why would I want to sit at home when other teams are continuing to play football?” Jameis said. “There is no bone a part of me that would want to sit at home. I don’t think my teammates deserve [me settling for less].

REAL ROCONGIZE REAL….WINSTON AND “REAL” FANS KNOW WHAT A SUCCESSFUL SEASON LOOKS LIKE AND WE DIDNT HAVE ONE….PLAYOFFS! YOU LOSERS!!!!…..KEEP UP THE GMC MINDSET…IT’LL GET YOU FAR….#DUMBA$$LOSERS….GO BUCS!!!!

  31. 813bucboi Says:

    *BUT I WONT……

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

813 – i’m not answering any question you ask – considering you twist my words and never respond to any point or question I’ve ever posed in any debate.

You’re an impossible person to have a reasonable conservation with. Simple as that.

  33. Lord Cornelius Says:

    example of 813 twists

-entire conversation & debate is about the level of improvement from 2015 to 2016 – and all points are made in this regard

-he twists the conversation to be about a winston quote defining what a successful season is acting like we all never want to make the playoffs

    intellectual dishonesty at its finest

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    @stpete
    @87
    @bucfan
@lord…if Winston were to read the comments you guys post, he would shake his head in disgust while saying,” what a bunch of GMC’s….LOL….now try to spin what Winston, our team leader has said about the season…..GO BUCS!!!!

  35. 813bucboi Says:

    @lord…WHAT?…..
I said we made slight improvement….

you said we made HUGE improvement….or we improved more than slightly….

when I say making the playoffs would’ve showed HUGE improvements, you disagreed and listed a hundred facts TRYING to support your case….

then I go and find a quote from our team leader, AMERICAS QB that agrees with me and backs up why I don’t think this was an successful season…

    now I talking off topic….LOLOLOLOL….

dude stick to your music because football and knowledge of it aint your thing….lol…GO BUCS!!!!

  36. Buc1987 Says:

    813bucboi ….long day?

You’re entire JBF existence is a phony and you’re not Jameis Winston.

    You’re high.

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

This has seemingly taken on a life of its own. I was merely stating what most observers would; We are a better football team.
That you take this as an indictment of my “GMC love of losing” or whatever is head-scratching. What we’re saying is fact. The Bucs are better. In MY world I am the biggest Buc fan on the planet! There’s nothing I want to see more than the victory formation at the end of a Super Bowl that WE won!
But hey, run with whatever gets you fired up 813!

  38. BFFL Says:

Defense finally played better which is why we have more wins.

defense = wins. Offense played like crap and regressed. JW was a magician and really helped to cover up just how bad the offense was.

  39. 813bucboi Says:

@87…nawl…im a real bucs fan….someone who jameis would be proud of….you…not so much….

@bucsfan….your right…this has taken a life of its own….we can all agree that the bucs are a better football team….I think they are slightly better while others think they have improved by leaps and bounds…we all want the same thing….at the end of the day, we want the bucs to be superbowl champs…..GO BUCS!!!!

  40. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    813

Don’t feel beat up. Just a disagreement because we all have different opinions and we all know what they say about opinions.

  41. 813bucboi Says:

    ….GO BUCS!!!!

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

    Amen brother! Go Bucs!

  43. JameisDungy Says:

Feel like that has more to do with Mike Smith than Dirk Koetter.

Here’s hoping Dirk gets better as a HC next year.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

813..okay you’re right. I’m buying season tickets in a few weeks and if they don’t make it to the SB they should fire Dirk. Cause that’s what fans should expect every season or the season was a failure.

    Even Brown’s fans.

    Try going to game sometime…

You’re making me laugh. Talking like a player instead of a fan. If that’s your way of being a fan, that’s okay by the rest of us.

We’ll just keep calling out your rants of silliness.

  45. BushidoEvans Says:

813…hi! We all really like you and you’re an awesome fan. You are so smart and knowledgeable about football and sports in general man! You could’ve been a GM or something, I mean seriously. Thankfully you decided to forgo that lucrative career path and chose to sacrifice all the potential accolades and fanfare, I can hear them chanting now “813! 813!!!, the savior of Bucs nation!”. To think you gave all of that up to educate us silly Buccaneer optimists, who dare to use our eyes and see the improvement. We just don’t see the game at the deep level that you do. I mean I was raised around and played ball from the time I was 5, but clearly we don’t see the game like you do at such a deep level. What a man, what a fan…I’m thankful, I’m just thankful for you man. You’ve shown me the light. The Bucs suck and they have no future, no future at all. I mean they did dominate Seattle and beat Kansas City in a place where they never lose…oh and had a winning season…oh and only missed the playoffs by a tiebreaker. That means nothing, I know that now. So thankful for you!

    Is that good?

  46. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    @BushidoEvans

    Roasted. I lol’d.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

    BushidoEvans…ha ha ha ha. smh

  48. BushidoEvans Says:

    🙂

  49. BushidoEvans Says:

I honestly don’t know what else to say to people like that.

  50. 813bucboi Says:

@bush…I see your as stupid as they come….ive said plenty of times that the team is better….slightly better….but thanks for giving me props…I know I have more knowledge than you and others…..now people want to say I cant have the same expectation as Winston because im not a player or Winston himself….BS…LOL…keep on losers!!!!….Winston is shaking his head in disgust!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  51. 813bucboi Says:

@87…..I go to games year…I was a season ticket holder for 6 straight years….I went to 4games this year…I have a few businesses so I don’t purchase season tickets, a little too busy….firing dirk would be stupid….but he should be able to get us into the playoffs….dumba$$!!!!….GO BUCS!!!
