Mike Martz Calls Jameis Winston “Unusual”

December 1st, 2016

jameis-1028What could be more fun than listening to legendary offensive coordinator and successful head coach Mike Martz break down America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, with (wait for it) ex-Buc and booted Tampa sports radio host Dan Sileo?

Joe can think of many things. But Joe scours the globe for Bucs nuggets and this was a good one on 1090 AM in San Diego.

On Jameis, Martz, now an analyst for FOX, said he only recently began studying Jameis on film and came away very impressed.

“I was kind of shocked at how quickly, not just how quick he gets rid of the ball, but his decision-making,” Martz said.

“He’s unusual. He’s pretty darn good now. He’s like Philip [Rivers] in terms of getting back, knowing where the ball’s got to go and getting it out of there quickly. He’s maturing. His arrow is pointed up right now. He’s a very dangerous quarterback in this league.”

Quality scouting report there from Mr. Martz.

On the Chargers’ matchup against the Bucs, Martz gave the San Diego offense an “A” grade. They’d get an “A+,” he said, but too many turnovers prevent that elite praise.

Martz said both teams are similar in many respects and the Chargers would be wise to keep pounding their running game against the Bucs. He called RB Melvin Gordon is the most improved player in the NFL.

Martz has been “unusual” his whole career

Mike Martz calls JW “Unusual”? Martz was considered an bit of an oddball back in the day, too. Famous is not an oddball; he’s just gifted.

I’m more worried about Gordon than River’s right now. I don’t wish to see us get gouged in the running game. It seems sometimes our defense doesn’t tackle that well. Maybe those days are gone.

Jameis is unusual. He has had accuracy issues, but almost always makes the right read. He usually only throws into double coverage when giving Evans a chance. He’s getting that Tom Brady vibe to him in the fact that he’s knowing where he’s going to throw the ball, pre-snap. Not because he’s locking on to a receiver, but based on who he knows will be open based on the defensive lineup. I think the next 20-15 years will be fun.

As a Buc fan I’m just going with….he’s going to be.

The Bucs will win this game in the trenches like they did last week.

Agree w/ you St. Pete on Gordon. Gonna need great gap discipline to keep him in check without having to sell out to stop him. If he gets going, it’ll be a long day for the defense. Do we know if Conte is playing?

If we get 90+ yards on the ground and be efficient on first down running, I think Jameis will have a great game and we can get the win. Maybe Koetter will stop calling the toss sweep on 2nd down too??? prob not

  9. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Winston’s biggest issue is his mechanics. Some pretty horrible things were said of Rodgers’ mechanics his first couple years on the bench and look where he is now. Koetter and Winston are on the same page mentally, but he’s going to need a good QB coach to improve his mechanics and accuracy. When this happens, JW will become an annual contender for MVP.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

StPete, I’m concerned about Melvin Gordon too. Chargers have a big OLine (just a tad smaller than Oakland’s) and Gordon seems to run the ball well behind them. For instance, against the Titan he ran for just shy of 200 yds and put up over 100 against the Broncos & Jaguars. Bucs weren’t all that good against the run earlier in the season, but I’m hoping that having McDonald & Ayers back, plus adding Russell & Siliga will make a big difference. I’m just hoping that Kwon plays stouter at the line of scrimmage (way too many tackles well down the field).

  11. Jim Says:

Sorry Martz, if you’re honestly shocked at how quickly Jameis gets rid of the ball, I’m not sure who you’re watching. The line has had pretty good protection this year, yet Winston is near the top in quarterback hits. He’s not really impressive in the getting the ball out quick department. Not knocking on Jameis, but he’s either just not there yet, or it’s not his style. He loves extending plays.

Joe the chargers r gonna move to LA… How’s that news gonna rub their fans this weekend??? Hmmmm

  13. ARGH_M8E Says:

Then again whoooooo cares?!!! Let’s destroy them!!!!!! AMPED

  14. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Jim, if you read it again you’ll see he’s taking about how quick he makes his decisions, not his release time. It’s in the first sentence. Once he knows the throw it’s like a bullet off of his hand. Not once he starts the throw, but at the end.

  15. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’m not worried about a slower release, as long as he continues to look off Safteys, they won’t get there in time. I think it hurt him at times in his rookie season, but not so much anymore. Might hurt him when he starts to lose his arm strength in 13 years, though.

  16. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Just look at the one throw to Evans with 3 guys around him. Even with a slower release, they still couldn’t do anything about it. Not worried at all.

  17. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

I’m rooting for the cowgirls tonight. THEY CAN BE HAD. I think we are a very comparable team to Minnesota (exempt our qb and wr are better) and they SHOULD be winning this game

  18. AtlBucFanDan Says:

I too went with the Cowbi’s, only because I think a Minnesota loss benefits us more.

How ’bout it Joe? Can we start expecting a “Who to root for” article on Wednesday or Thursdays from here on out?

  19. FLBoyInDallas Says:

The Chargers will be missing four of their best players for the game:

Brandon Flowers, their best CB, out with a concussion. Who’s gonna cover Mike Evans?

Tyrell Williams, their best WR (51 catches for 790 yards and 5 TD’s), out with a bad shoulder. Who’s gonna make up for that kind of production?

Jatavis Brown and Jerry Attaochu, two starting LB’s, are out as well.

If the Bucs can’t win this game with their opponent missing that kind of talent then they can’t be considered a playoff contender.

  20. Eric Says:

    @FLboyindallas

I agree man. We need to take advantage of these situations. It’s a little concerning though that we are going on 3 games in a row where we are beating injured teams. Peters, Prosise, Thomas, Bennett, Charles, etc now these 4. I’ll take a win no matter what we’re getting closer to playing teams close to full health and that will be the real test.

I’ve looked at injury reports for the past 10 years to determine if it helped our cause or not and the good thing is, we’re finally taking advantage of those advantages. Can’t wait til we beat dominant teams at full health too!
