His hazing fuels Bucs tight end.

His hazing fuels Bucs tight end.

Bucs tight end Cameron Brate is an outsider.

His locker room is full of players from college powerhouses past and present, like Florida, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska, Penn State, Tennessee, Clemson, Michigan State and schools from Power Five conferences like Texas A&M, Illinois, Cal, Purdue and Oregon State.

And then you have Harvard Man, Brate.

Speaking on PFT Live, hosted by the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, Brate discussed how he is hazed almost daily for not going to a football school, namely by Russell Shepard.

“I get a lot of grief,” Brate told Florio. “Russell Shepard spearheads that effort. He went to LSU. He always tells me I shouldn’t be [in the NFL]. I love it, to hear from those guys that I shouldn’t be in the NFL.

“I am trying to make a name for myself every single day. Russell Shepard is crazy. He motivates me every day.”

Joe once witnessed one of those conversations, if that’s what it is called, though Brate was not involved.

America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, Louis Murphy and Shepard were going at it at full-throat over which of their alma mater’s had the best team. Jameis hollered he was on an undefeated national champion, therefore, scoreboard. Murphy scoffed back at Jameis that when he was on a national title team with Florida, he never had to play a cupcake like Wake Forest. Shepard, though he never won a national title in college, stuck up for Les Miles and the Bayou Bengals.

It was pretty hilarious to watch. It was like a loud, out of control bar room argument, sans beer. Joe can’t remember which player told him this, but Joe was told, “It’s like this every day between those guys, you just don’t get to see it.”

Shepard is one of those guys that a locker room needs. He keeps guys real, keeps things fresh and is passionate about football.

Oh, it also helps to have a tight end who leads the NFL in touchdown catches at his position, Ivy League grad or not.

One thing is certain Murphy played with more felons and I bet niether Winston or Brate have a teammate serving life.

Ali Marpet once told Jameis Hobart could beat FSU. Why is SHeppard runnin his mouth, he been in the NFL since the 1900’s and still barely plays.

I agree joe. Every locker room needs a good vibe to it. If Shepard is that guy, then we need to keep him. He might not ever be a a good WR but if he can help get the other 50 guys playing better, then he is well worth the roster spot. Leaders and chemistry are important to any team. And those points are why the bucs have been terrible the past decade. The locker room is starting to change, we just need to get in a rhythm on the field, and play good football. Success will follow.

There was a point this year where every offensive and defensive starter on the FSU National Championship team was signed to an NFL Team. 22 for 22.
