“Vernon Is Low Maintenance”

Deep appreciation for the Bucs’ first-round pick

It seems the Bucs aren’t babying 21-year-old Vernon Hargreaves — because he doesn’t require it.

The first-round pick out of the University of Florida is the pride of Dirk Koetter because he isn’t the typical rookie.

“I’m real impressed with Vernon. You know why? Because Vernon is low maintenance,” Koetter told the Buccaneers Radio Network this week. “Vernon isn’t one of those guys that you gotta spend a whole bunch of time on. Like, as a rookie saying, ‘Hey now, you gotta do this; you gotta do this.’ Vernon goes out there and does his job.”

Impressive stuff there, and it also speaks to how well he’s being coached — and mentored by Brent Grimes.

Koetter also seemed to say Hargreaves’ days as a nickel cornerback are officially over: “I think Vernon has settled in that he prefers not having to switch back and forth from corner to nickel. I think he likes staying outside at corner. … We’re just real happy with both of our corners, Verner and Brent Grimes.”

Bucs general manager Jason Licht is taking a beating from fans for the Bucs’ grim situation at kicker and wide receiver, following the loss of Vincent Jackson yesterday, but Joe can’t forget about the positives of Licht’s three drafts.

Just ask the Giants how they’re enjoying Eli Apple, the cornerback taken one pick before Hargreaves in April.

i was not sold on VH3 but he has won me over.

  2. feelthepewterpower Says:

yeah, the Giants taking Apple because of his size not his overall ability was a head scratcher to me as well. If they take VH3 we would have taken Rankins most likely, but actually glad we took VH3 in the long run, and was likely our first choice at that spot anyhow, and we got extra compensation for him to boot!

  3. R.O. Says:

How dare the Bucs not have Pro Bowl backups waiting for the non-pro bowl starters to get hurt. Green Bay had to use WRs at RB last week. The Bucs are not the exception without quality depth at every level for every position. Get over it…

  4. BigHogHaynes Says:

Nothing to worry about with VH28, I can’t wait to seem him next year with a year under his belt! Tho I must say I don’t know why Joe wants to give credit to his “coach” for the guy came saying he could ball! Now if that same “coach” could somehow get those Safeties to improve their play………I would be impressed!

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Haven’t followed the Giants. Can’t stand them. I’m assuming Apple is rotten?

  6. gotbbucs Says:

I have a feeling that the Bucs weren’t counting on Hargreaves still being there when the traded back in the 1st round. It’s my belief that they had their eyes on either Corey Coleman or an offensive lineman when they traded back but we’re surprised by the fact that NY took Apple instead of Hargreaves.

He’s certainly won me over so far. I really wanted Coleman but I guess if Hargreaves is going to continue to play like this it will be a good pick.

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

    So far so good…

I want to see him matchup against his old buddy the following week

    Amari cooper

    Good pick
Great pick if he takes over #1 corner position

  8. Scurvy Dogs Says:

    @gotbbucs

Vernon said his agent told him the day before that the Bucs were going to move back and draft him.

  9. Scurvy Dogs Says:

On another note: Miko is on social media threatening to move on to Carolina because the fans treated her so well and the Bucs fans boo Grimes lol.

  10. Bird Says:

Lol. Most people on this site were ripping that pick. The next joe Haden

  11. teacherman777 Says:

i am not surprised Bucs fans were booing Miko.

Our fans, sorry to say it, are some of the trashiest in the NFL.

Bucs fans used to send death threats to Doug Williams for being BLACK!

Tampa Bay still has way too many racist rednecks rumbling around town.

  12. BigHogHaynes Says:

I approve that message!^^^BACK IN THE DAY!

  13. SB with Jameis Says:

    …………………………..
    Coleman is injured.

  14. @AllThingsTBbucs Says:

Licht must make a move here. His record isn’t as great for Tampa and last year we saw our offence take a step back once VJax was injured. He must have confidence in his rookies but making a trade for a contract year player like Alshon Jerffery or DeSean Jackson with est. 70 mill in cap space next offseason would be great in my eyes.

Note Eric Berry will be a FA for those who hate Conte! Haha!

  15. SOEbuc Says:

AllThings I’ve hated Conte with a passion since he arrived and I’ve been saying all this year that Eric Berry in FA would be a dream

  16. SOEbuc Says:

If Grimes is #1 and Vernon is #2 and Jude is slot, is Verner getting $9 mil for sitting on the bench? Not a bad deal.

  17. CrimsonWarriors Says:

@teacherman777 I’ve noticed the same thing. I’m a bucs fan living in Jersey and from afar the bucs fanbase is a mess. I really wouldn’t want to play for our “fans” either. Never satisfied and all think they should be gm/coach. Shut up and eat tostitos and queso and root for your team from the couch like a normal person smh…hell tale your confederate flag to the dry cleaners or shine your rifle instead if the bucs make you so angry.

  18. CrimsonWarriors Says:

How are there racist football fans?!!! By default it should go against your beliefs to root for any football team to be honest considering the percentage of black players lol.

  19. PRBucFan Says:

Many FSU fans weren’t fans of the pick.

IMO he was my favorite CB going into the draft.

    So stoked he’s a Buc.

  20. godzilla13 Says:

Before the Carolina game the announcers were making fun of our CB size. They showed Hargreaves, Grimes and Verner all being listed at 5-10. They then showed the Carolina WR and TE f Benjamin, Funchess and Olsen being listed at 6-4 and 6-5. The announcers went on to say how much height matters and that the Panthers had a clear advantage over the “small” Buccaneer CB’s. Well, Grimes only allowed one catch on just two targets to go with a crucial interception while Hargreaves limited Carolina receivers to 70 yards, including just nine after the catch. So much for the height disadvantage for the Bucs secondary. There is no better mentor for Hargreaves than Brent Grimes. If the defense can get McCoy, Ayers and McDonald back to get the pass rush goig, this defense is better than most people think.

  21. godzilla13 Says:

One more thing, trade or waive Alterraun Verner. What a waste to pay him almost 7M a year? Jude is playing much better and I still would like to see Banks get some playing time? With Verner gone by next year and VJAX too that frees up around 17M in cap space. There is no team with more cap space available next year than the Buccaneers. 77 million. The shopping list needs to include –

    WR
    Safety x 2
    LT
    DE
    DT
    LB
    TE
