The Deep appreciation for the Bucs’ first-round pick

The Bucs have the top cornerbacks tandem in the NFC South. Which one is better?

Rookie Vernon Hargreaves doesn’t have an interception yet, but he’s playing like a veteran in many ways.

Cornerbacks coach Jon Hoke was talking Hargreaves on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week, and he echoed what Dirk Koetter said, that Hargreaves was at his best at San Francisco.

Hoke also sees the development of Hargreaves as a complete player.

“Probably Sunday was his best game so far,” Hoke said. “He was really locked in, did a lot of very good things in the run game and in the passing game. Because, you know, in this defense, you’re not just a corner, you’re a football player. And you’re going to be asked to do different things. So he’s starting to understand that and grasp that. He’s studying well and you can see him starting to react faster, see things faster.”

Hoke went on to say Hargreaves starting his career learning two positions has paid dividends.

“He’s learned a lot of football, and now you’re starting to see some of it be more reactionary instead of thinking so much,” Hoke said.

Exciting times, Bucs fans. Hargreaves has been more than holding his own as teams avoid throwing at Brent Grimes.

Sipping the sauce a little early Joe??? What does the CBS have to do with run game, your next column gonna “kicking game still in inconsistent” and write about the draft? LOL anyways, the best thing to say about our rookie CB, is we hear nothing during the games until he makes a play, in other words he’s doing great by not getting beat so analysts have nothing to say

Imagine what it would look like with a decent pass rush!!!!!!

    Guzzie

He meant defending against the run. Stuffing the run. You know, tackling running backs and stuff like that?

I know Ive seen a couple plays where he took some one out at the line of scrimmage. Reminds me of #20

Definitely need a pass rush this weekend. If Carr has too much time, he’ll pick the secondary apart.

  11. orlbucfan Says:

Be nice if Smith WOULD LET BANKS PLAY A FEW REPS along with VHIII and Grimes!! Banks has no fear tackling or sacking a QB. What’s with Smith regarding JB, Joe?

  12. Louis Friend Says:

@orlbucfan If they liked what Banks was doing, he’d be on the field. I just don’t see him getting near a game unless there are a couple of injuries. Not to mention, he has 10 games left on his contract as a Bucs player. Everyone else in front of him is playing well enough and has a longer future with the team. Except Verner.

Agree. I’m totally happy with going DE or DT round 1 next year if the talent is right. Even if Spence comes on strong the rest of the year; you can never have too many freaks on your line.

  14. unbelievable Says:

DL, OL, S, and WR are highest needs. Don’t care what order, just get the most talented guy possible. WR or S could possibly be handled in free agency but the draft is where we’re gonna find our best talent.

As for VHIII, he has certainly been holding his own so far. Although having your best game of the year against one of the 2 worst teams in the league ain’t saying much.

This weekend is going to be a great test of our roster on both sides of the ball. Hoping he gets his first INT as well, 813bucsboi. Go Bucs!

  15. Pickgrin Says:

Anyone else notice that QBs are hardly throwing in Hargreaves direction? That’s one of the main reasons he has had so few Int opportunities and speaks volumes about the job he is doing at CB so far

VH3 was exactly what we needed. A rookie who could come in and have an immediate positive impact at CB on the field. And he’s got a bookend elder statesman in Grimes who has been very successful in the NFL and has the exact same physical attributes to help mentor and advise him on how to translate those athletic, ball hawking skills onto an NFL field.

Very pleased with this pick so far and if we can find a safety of the same caliber in next years draft this secondary will be looking good heading into the future.

Definitely need a pass rush this weekend. If Carr has too much time, he’ll pick the secondary apart.

–The problem is that the Raiders have a very good offensive line, and the Bucs’ pass rush is merely average. I think the Bucs will need to effectively blitz to get a win this weekend.
