We Don’t Pay To Watch You!

Shove the flag up your rear end.

Shove the flag up your rear end.

Joe has already written about the personal foul against America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, for disputing an official’s call Sunday on a critical third-down spot.

The Bucs were stopped inches from a first down. Jameis, competitor that he is, thought the Bucs had secured a first down. Jameis even went after an official complaining about the spot. The official apparently became morally offended and threw a flag, costing the Bucs critical yardage in a game that was still in doubt.

Joe spanked Jameis this morning for this, and apparently Bucs coach Dirk Koetter scolded Jameis as well. But upon further review, the call seems more outrageous than justified.

Jameis spoke a bit about the flag today in his weekly presser and it sure seems there may be an awful double-standard among NFL zebras.

“Not many words were exchanged,” Jameis said. “I said, ‘Man, I think it was a bad call.’ I probably didn’t say it that way but I said it was probably a bad spot.

“I apologized to him. The [reason for the flag] was me looking at him and he thought it was standing him up. I just can’t do that. I can’t let that affect our play.”

While Joe agrees with Jameis, he can’t put his team in that position, this is infuriating. A zebra hit Jameis because he looked at him the wrong way. He looked at him the wrong way? What the hell???

This is just an official that is trigger happy. And folks wonder why TV audiences are declining? Who the hell pays good money or sets aside a chunk of their lives to watch the zebras? To quote Marv Levy, what an “over-officious jerk!”

Joe is not condoning what Jameis did, but how many times have you seen Tom Brady or Drew Brees berate an official? Happens damned near every week. But some clown of an insurance claims adjuster with a high-paying part-time weekend job is so thin-skinned he hits a quarterback and a team with a 15-yard penalty because he didn’t like the way the quarterback looked at him? Did someone steal this guy’s pacifier?

Look, the judicious thing would have been for the ref to warn Jameis and Koetter about the issue, not be some trigger-happy fool looking to get on TV. That’s outrageous!

If Dean Blandino, head of NFL officials, can pull himself away from strip-club-hopping with Jerry Jones, he ought to have a talking-to with this referee.

not to be a smart ass joe but look at your previous post… jameis aint Brady or brees yet so if he’s gonna get in a refs face, he’s probably gonna get flagged.

  2. EA Says:

I would side with Jameis on this but i remeber Jameis kept barking at the referee and wouldn’t back away. I felt it was inappropriate for Jameis to do that, i also thought the spot of the ball was correct.

  3. BucFan20 Says:

I probably didn’t say it that way. No kidding. He got flagged. Get over it.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

I’m pretty sure the language Jameis used to point out what he believed was a mistaken spot was what drew the flag – not a “look”.

The spot actually looked right on to me when I saw it live – downed a few inches short of the line to gain.

To be very much a smart ass, did you read the story?

  6. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Can someone confirm or deny this?..I was out among some elite Tampa fans, watching the game and someone yelled “Oh that official, he’s an attorney up in…”..didn’t catch the rest, cause I was livid myself…lol…

“I’m pretty sure the language Jameis used to point out what he believed was a mistaken spot was what drew the flag – not a “look”.”

Was going to say this myself

  8. mike n Says:

@joe that was your comment about the flag

Brady knows he’s Brady, so he won’t get that flag thrown at him, just like Michael Jordan knew certain calls would never go against him. –Joe

our boy is brady yet so he will get flaged for antics

  10. Rojas Says:

I read it’s between Smith or Jefferey.

  11. DI Says:

Funny this was mentioned, I remember the exact look Jameis shot the ref. Geez I didn’t think that was the reason for the flag. I thought he at least insulted his mother.

  12. iamkingsu Says:

Smith who? And ain’t Jeffrey playing under the tag?? He’s going to want a new deal. ME is probably going to get a new deal after next season. We’re not in cap hell but let’s be smart.

  13. Stanglassman Says:

I thought the flag on McCoy was worse. I like the way they picked up the flag and chose not to even throw it the 2nd time when Seattle did the exact same pass rush between the center/guard on the special team kick.

Btw I thought the fact that Jameis is a capt. he had the ability to question officials on the calls. Regardless he needs to show more composure and respect when addressing officials. I don’t think it would have been called on a white Qb.

  14. iamkingsu Says:

    Rojas

My bad you’re referring to Torrey smith. I was thinking Steve smith and got mad as hell

Even more disturbing is the lack of roughing the passer calls for Jameis. On the pick he was hit in the head/neck area (took a helmet to the face) but no call and it certainly isn’t the first time.

Let’s see Jameis don’t get roughing calls, Cam don’t get roughing calls and Kap darn sure don’t get calls, coincidence? Absolutely it’s a coincidence no question about it.

Can’t call roughing but look at him the wrong way and boom 15 yards for unsportsmanlike. That’s straight BS. But you gots to keep them in their place or else they start kneeling during the national anthem and really cause chaos. And we simply can’t have that!!! #make #murica #grate #again

  18. iamkingsu Says:

    @db55

    So what are you implying??

    Lmao

O/T: just switched over from WDAE. I listened to the Duemig/Joe show. Jonathan Banks is just a very talented DB leftover from the HC Musical Chairs. So, he’s getting cut loose soon. Well, we got guys like Michael Crabtree (healthy) among others (Raiders) starting this game Sunday. Banks (on the bench) is as good as hey Jude. Let him play just a few plays. Enuff said. Go Mighty Bucs!!

I want to know what is happening to a very good Bucs player who slipped through the HC Musical Chairs. Johnnathan Banks deserves to play before he’s cut. This deactivating him last game was wrong. He better be dressed for Sunday’s game.

37 year devoted Buc Fan. Go Tampa Bay!!!

    DB55
    I agree!
    Jameis ( the captain)
may have been colorful when questioning the call, however, he is very apologetic and did so! There is a misconception that if
Jameis is moving his head, mouth and arms he is being rude and aggressive. Trust me it was the LOOK the Zebra could not take. Jimbo knows, Nole fans know!

  23. Brett Says:

I think he dropped the f-bomb at him. You can read Jameis’ lips.

  24. cmurda Says:

Joe, you may be on record as not condoning Jameis actions but I’ll go on the record and condone it. You got a critical drive that depends on a spot on a close play. It also may factor into whether or not the Bucs go for the 4th down. The pompous refs chose not even to measure the spot. Anything under a yard to go is typically measured if requested. i find it ludicrous that the spot wasn’t even measured and borderline criminal that a passionate QB was flagged for nothing.

@DB55 Let’s keep race out of it since 80% plus of football players are black. I do agree that too many players do not get the benefit of calls for whatever the reason may be. I disagree regarding Cam. That dude gets his share of calls and is continually whining for more calls. I love him as a player and for embracing himself as a role model for kids, but it is what it is.

Now, Kap. that’s a different story. He has the right to protest. For someone like me, who volunteered to help defend this country, I take it as a slap in the face. Yes, he has the right to protest and I have the right to think of him as a bag of testicles.

  25. lurker Says:

goes to show you who the REAL america’s qb is, and jameis christ should be paying attention!

  26. orlbucfan Says:

Love it. Latest rumors have Verner plus Banks as trade bait. Nope. Someone will take Banks w/o the other guy. Banks is a deal. Verner ain’t.

  27. DB55 Says:

    Fair enough but….

  28. iamkingsu Says:

    Shout out to Kaep though!

  29. gotbbucs Says:

I’ve been saying this to my buddy’s at work all season. Every week two or three games at the minimum are decided by the refs and missed extra points.
The refs are there to keep order, not be focal points. It’s getting sickening.
Then the “player” on the team with the most fragile psyche and least athletic ability (kicker) has been made into one of the most important guys on the team. I’ve never seen kicking as bad as what it’s become since they moved the extra points back.

The owners have nobody to blame but themselves for the product that is now getting put out there on Sundays. Their henchman, Roger “Castro” Goodell, has made a once beloved sport from ten years ago unrecognizable. I feel terrible for my young sons that will never know what football is supposed to be played like. The NFL Hall of Fame is full of defensive players that wouldn’t have stood a chance in today’s game. All of the big hitting Safeties that used to administer punishment across the middle of the field would be kicked out of the league. Two players doing a tiny celebration after a big play are penalized now.

…..but it’s alright to beat the sh!t out of women, just don’t smoke a joint or you’ll be banned for a calendar year. The NFL has turned into a terrible soap opera.

  30. unbelievable Says:

    @Stanglassman,

Agreed 100%. That was not leaping, in any way! Terrible call. Even the announcers thought so.

Then you see Wagner do it not once, but twice in the night game! with no flag!

This is one of the 2 biggest problems with the NFL, and directly related to their declining ratings. There is literally no consistency between game-to-game, crew-to-crew, on how things are officiated and how rules are enforced.

  31. unbelievable Says:

    @gotbucs – 100% brotha on all points!

  32. Buccfan37 Says:

Hire younger refs, these old codgers are washed up.

  33. lurker Says:

respect the refs or get flagged, simple as that. he won’t say what happened, exactly.

  34. cmurda Says:

I also agree 100% gotbucs. In fact, on the first TD to M.E., I thought for sure he and Winston’s little celebration of mimicking a layup was going to be flagged. How sad has it become that I actually thought that would be flagged. God forbid a man celebrate a TD.

@DB55. I asked to keep race out of it but at the same time, I’m not disagreeing with you.

Let’s be honest Josh Brown got nothing at all. The NFL “supposedly” didn’t know the extent of the abuse. Now, he claims that he never physically hit his ex-wife and blah blah blah. Dude has still not been released. Come on. However the whole Ray Rice thing was awfully similar. Goodell has his head up his arse. I don’t even know if the guy has enough common sense to be racist but…

  35. Chucklehead Says:

    Bucsfan37

Hire younger refs??? How young you wanting to go?

What if they put a bunch of these millenials in there? Where would their “safe place” be on the gridiron?

Lol. I can see it now…

“Unsportsman like conduct on #34 of the offense for making the defense work too hard to stop him”

“And that is the end of the 4th quarter. Both teams will now line up at the 50 yard line to receive your good sportsmanship triphies… that is all”

  36. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Thank you Brett. It was clear that he said f%#$ you. It was clear on the replay. Saying that to a ref certainly deserves a flag and Jameis stepped way over the line there. On top of all that it was a good spot and he was wrong anyway.

  37. Joe Says:

It was clear on the replay. Saying that to a ref certainly deserves a flag and Jameis stepped way over the line there.

Of course there is no excuse for this. Koetter and Jameis both said the flag was for how Jameis “looked” at the ref. That’s just wrong.

Reminds Joe of a story Jim Valvano told. A ref made a call he didn’t like and he shot the ref a glare and shook his head. The referee asked him what’s wrong? Valvano said, “If you only knew what I was thinking.” Ref said, “I can’t hit you with a foul for what you are thinking” and Valvano then shot back, “OK then, I think you suck!”

    Valvano got tee’ed up.

  38. Pit Says:

i am pretty sure the reason we always lose has to do with race and i am positive that the reason Geno Smith got injured is because of race.

  39. Buccaneers Says:

I agree with the story that nobody wants to watch the zebras, only football. We dont get many of them here in Tampa but have you ever saw a game with only just a flag or two? It is a lot of fun……….How about trying to explain the game and the rules to somebody and the game becomes a flag fest? Boy, its embarassing and the answer to the question…… Why do you even watch this junk?……is always the same……..I dont know! Bite me refs,……………………………..Reguarding Winstons pentalty something tells me that this isnt the first time he did something to annoy a ref and they had probably been warned he could get vocal arguing calls. I doubt they threw a flag over him getting argumentative and this being only time,……………arguing flags and ball positioning is not often seen on NFL fields, kinda an unwritten rule maybe?

  40. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Watch the replay Buccaneers. You tell a ref f%#€ you and you will get a penalty. It is cut and dry.

  41. evolvingBucfan Says:

Being partially deaf i am an excellent lip reader, here is what i saw Jameis say

“Come on ref you know you is a few inches short, just ask yo wife!!”

and here comes the flag a fly’n…….

  42. Brandon Says:

This is one person’s view of it. I’m sure the referee has a totally different account of the story. We can’t come to the defense of people just because they said they were unfairly punished. The fact is, he said something forcibly (that much can be seen on tape) and a flag was thrown.

And neither does Andrew Luck, Carson Wentz, and any other STURDY young QBs…. to totally blow your theory out of the water…. I present to you… Robert Griffin III. A black QB that is the complete antithesis of ‘sturdy’ and he’s gotten some roughing calls that even Brady doesn’t get. Heck, he even got a personal foul called against us when Mark Barron legally tackled him.

Racism or not… I think if you look hard enough for something, you’ll always find what you’re looking for whether it is there or not.
