“Game Is Still Moving Substantially Fast For Jameis”

September 26th, 2016
Ian Beckles sees the future.

Ian Beckles sees the future.

One soothing element in the world of Bucs fans is former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) is still pontificating on radio before and after Tampa Bay games.

There is order in the world. Joe can’t bear to think of Beckles not being there for angst-ridden Bucs fans.

Beckles is a busy man on 102.5 FM these days, but unlike many Bucs fans, he wasn’t in panic mode whatsoever today.

Simply stated, Beckles sees a Tampa Bay team still in a maturation phase, but one with significant problems on defense.

On offense, well, Beckles eyes are open wide to a shining light at the end of the tunnel. He’s all-in on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and his competitive drive and ability, and he advises fans to keep perspective.

“The game is still moving substantially fast for Jameis Winston,” said Beckles, explaining it will be only a matter of time (not too much time) before Jameis makes the throws he’s missing and sharpens his decision-making.

Joe is summarizing loads of Beckles’ takes here, but the point is the mass freakout afflicting Bucs faithful this morning hasn’t found its way to one of the more insightful yet emotional Bucs analysts of our time.

    Too bad it didn’t work out on the flagship station. Anyone know what happened?

    if the games still moving fast for Winston… i can’t wait to see how he plays when it slows down! #GoBucs

  3. Thibs5599 Says:

    Or how about we stop playing man press with the likes of our safeties and back up corners. To me it seems like only guys that can play man are Hargreaves and grimes, other than that nobody. Im not scout or coach but can someone tell memifnwere playing zone/man, sure seems like all these deep balls seem to be one on one man and our corners just aren’t fast enough. Haven’t seen grimes or Hargreaves get toasted yet.

  4. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Again…19 games of NFL experience after 24-25 games of college experience which btw was diluted because of his baseball playing.

    22 years of age! Growing pains? DUH.

    I’m all in on #3. I was late to the show but he’s made a true believer out of me.

    I am disappointed at one thing however. He has yet to walk across Tampa Bay on the water…still uses bridges…until he does that I shall not Deify him. I just believe he’s a really, really good QB prospect.

    Sure do. He doesn’t work there any more.

  6. Tampa Tony Says:

    @St Pete

    When do the excuses stop when we as fans see rookies be more accurate with ball and play turnover free games. Heck even first year starters like Garapulo and Seimian look better than Winston.

    Until Winston improves his accuracy and decision making the losing and turnovers will continue

    ______________

    I think he ran out of Tampa restaurants that were willing to bring him free food at the station.

    Thanks for the explanation Joes!

  9. LargoBuc Says:

    Its a shame Beckles is now in association with Cowpatty. Most arrogant jerk in this market, in my opinion.
    Anyway, I disagree with Beckles. I think it’s a mechanical issue with Jameis more than a mental issue. Jameis appears to make the proper read most of the time, and he does so quickly. Footwork and release hurt him more than anything.

  10. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

    Jameis threw for over 400 yards and at LEAST 4 of his 6 INTs this year were not his fault.

    Atlanta 1 INT – VJ ran wrong route, this is known

    Cards 4 INTs – Evans tracks the ball poorly and gets beat by superior play on a 50-50 ball (fine choice, no safety overtop, and good throw by Jameis) Sims drop on a high throw but Sims had two hands on it, VJ not even looking for the ball, and 4th pick was a final play, hail mary throw, hard to blame winston for that.

    Rams 1 INT – Sims drop – Fumble??

    Yes Jameis can do better with ball placement, but unlike most INTs, ALL of these could have been avoided by better play from Sims or other WRs.

    Really the only time so far this year I really want to criticize him for was his hesitation on the last play of the Rams game. Run it in or throw it up Jaboo.

    otherwise he has been impressive despite some inaccuracies

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Tampa Tony,

    Obviously you aren’t watching the games of the other rookies. I suggest you do so. Watch the kind of throws Wentz is being asked to make, then watch the kind of throws Jameis is asked to make. I would venture to say there isn’t another QB in the NFL with as many difficult, down the field throws as Jameis. Couple that with the fact that we have no running game whatsoever and we have no defense and no kicking game, he’s being asked to do a lot. Us not being able to run the ball takes away the play action and enables the other team to pin their ears back and rush the passer. Although he is getting good protection, he is getting hit a lot. He is having to rush a lot of throws, which is going to affect his accuracy. I’m not saying he’s not to blame because ultimately he’s got to make the throws, but I don’t believe he’s as bad as so many think.

  12. Waterboy Says:

    @Tampa Tony
    Let me go out on a limb and guess that you felt the Bucs should’ve drafted Mariota or started Glennon?

    The guy completed 62% of his passes yesterday and I think still leads the NFL in TD passes and you’re looking for anything you can possibly find negative to complain about to try to make a point that he’s not a good QB.

  13. BigStinky Says:

    Can’t wait until Jameis starts completing these passes to wide open guys and keeps some more of these drives alive. We could be scoring OVER 30 points EVERY game this year which would help our defense. Jameis keeps giving the other teams points: like 7, 10, or 14 – like yesterday, but it’s NOT entirely his fault. We are just NOT getting the bounces in our favor so far this year. It’s a shame the defense is NOT playing better, to keep these games from getting outta hand. Looks like we are STILL another year or 2 from contending for the division, or going to the playoffs. We are kinda like New Orleans now, we can score points but give up more than we score. Keep fighting BUCS!

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    Jameis Winston at one point in the game completed 10 straight passes.

    Accuracy is not an issue.

  15. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Thanks Hawaiian, Waterboy, and 87. Everybody hasn’t lost their nucking minds.

    I mean seriously…we’re now comparing a QB who is running one of the top offenses in the league…probable Super Bowl team in the Pats to the QB who was drafted by the worst team in the league at the time. We’re still nowhere near the Pats!!!

  16. Tampa Tony Says:

    @waterboy-

    You’d be wrong assuming that. I was all for Jameis, still on the fence about whether he is a franchise guy or Freeman 2.0. Which I think is fair. 8 TD’s 8 turnovers and leading the NFL in turnovers since entering the league is not good.

    His stats look good just like last year but when the Bucs needed a completion to keep a drive alive in the 3rd quarter Jameis couldn’t deliver and when we needed a td to win the game he over throws jackson

  17. Tampa Tony Says:

    Oh now St Pete chimes after he had no comebacks after our last exchange. Bad form amigo

  18. Dreambig Says:

    Lets be real here and think about this. We have a 22 yr old young man, who made the probowl, gots lots and lots of great hype over the off season, came out on fire against ATL, and got taken to the wood shed against the cards. He came back to earth hard and it looked to me that his confidence is shaken a bit. There were multiple times when he would have ran in previous games that yesterday he seemed hesitant. There were multiple times he failed to run yesterday when he could have. He is in a funk/slump at the moment that I think will clear through combat in the coming weeks. He still had a pretty good stat day but mentally he wasn’t all there. I agree with others he will be just fine.

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Tampa Tony,

    There’s one thing you have to understand – when you have a young guy leading a top 10 offense, you are going to have a lot of turnovers as well. That’s a fact. Jameis isn’t a game manager, nor is he being asked to be one. He is asked to do everything vets like Brees and Brady are asked to do. But here’s the thing – he doesn’t have 17 years in the NFL. He has less that 1.25! Watch what the other teams do to their young QB’s, and then watch what we do with Jameis. It’s not even comparable. We have ZERO running game. We can’t stop the F’ing Rams! We literally can’t even make an extra point. He’s dropping back over 50 times, and he’s not throwing a bunch of screen passes. He’s taking old school, 7 step drops, with his receivers running slow developing routes. All this combined means lots of points and yardage, but low completion percentage and lots of turnovers.

    Now if you want to argue we should do less with Jameis, maybe that’s valid. I don’t know. I would like to think it’s better to take the lumps now and reap the benefits later, but who knows? But with the way our offense is combined with his age, you are going to have to take the good with the bad, and there will be lots of bad. It doesn’t make him Freeman 2.0. Maybe you forgot, but Freeman always looked lost. He was constantly calling timeouts because he couldn’t get the team set. You don’t see much of that with Winston.

  20. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

    Hawaiian Buc hit the nail on the head, we have zero running game. Plus, we were playing catch up much of the game. This played right into the Ram’s hands.
    Our obsession with stopping Gurley cost us this game. Just him being on the field caused our safety’s to be out of position much of the time, and we got had.

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

    Alot of wisdom here

    Its all about the jaboo process

    Alot here know that i wanted Sterling shepard. I wanted him so jameis to learn how to use a rac wr to beat defensive coodinators. Learn how to dictate and really control the game so he will be unstoppabe. It will take alittle longer than i thought without a player like shepard but…

    Damn! Jameis is impressive. There really isnt any consistant separation, openings and playmakers for him. Even all the me13 receptions were tight windows. Dammm

    Amazing

  22. LakeLandBuc Says:

    I have to say that during Josh Freeman 2nd season, he threw 25 TD’s and 6 INTS. In 3 games during Jameis 2nd season, he already have 6 INTS with 13 games to play. I just thought that I would throw that out there to you DELUSIONAL fans.

  23. Grt1 Says:

    Beckles is still trying to be relevant, please go away . Most uneducated ,ill prepared, self promoting person on radio. Just go away ian. Jameis is fine . Our problem is V Jax he’s done we need a solid number 2.

  24. carload Says:

    Miss ya on DAE Ian

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    “I have to say that during Josh Freeman 2nd season, he threw 25 TD’s and 6 INTS. In 3 games during Jameis 2nd season, he already have 6 INTS with 13 games to play. I just thought that I would throw that out there to you DELUSIONAL fans.”

    ——-

    The DELUSIONAL fans are the one that thing that 25-6 was legit. Look at the teams we played against. We played an ACC schedule and he wasn’t asked to do anywhere near what Jameis is asked to. How many teams did we beat with a winning record? He threw for less that 3500 yards. People also forget he had an amazing number of dropped interceptions that year. He turned around the next year and threw 22 interceptions! Funny how you leave that out.

  26. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    People nowadays are so dependent on stats to tell them who is good. It’s obviously a result of fantasy football, which is the very reason I will never play that crap. I’m sure it’s fun, but it puts too much focus on stats, and not enough on reality (hence the word “fantasy”). Anybody here think Kirk Cousins is the top QB in the NFL? His stats say so, so it must be true, right? People need to realize that football isn’t baseball, there are too many variables to compare stats and judge players.

  27. Tampa Tony Says:

    @hawiaian

    Great points

    Maybe the Freeman comparasions are extreme but Jameis will amaze you and break your heart in the same game just like Freeman

  28. Tampa Tony Says:

    In that same 2010 season Freeman also had an extreme number of comebacks something Jameis has yet to master. The schedule is tougher in 2015 but in the NFL wins are wins. Wouldn’t we love to see this more talented Bucs team actually beat bad teams with bad QB’s?

  29. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Tampa Tony,

    Yes, I would. However, I don’t know what it is, but it seems like the crappier the QB, the better we make him play. Been that way since Lovie got here. At least a Raheem defense would eat a crappy QB up.

    There is no excuse for losing to the Rams. None. Disgraceful, horrible, embarrassing.

  30. Buc2015 Says:

    For perspective: if Jameis had made just ONE MORE MEASLY PLAY – a rush or pass TD on last drive – he would be the absolute toast of the town, and up for offensive player of the week honors for the second time in three weeks. I’m frankly shocked that he didn’t do it … would have put money on Jameis to finish that drive.

    He will be fine going forward, and D will play better …. Broncos or Panthers will fall, watch it.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

    I was a pretty big Freeman fan, but I don’t ever remember being “amazed” by him. Even during those comebacks.

  32. Issic Haggins Says:

    Largo Buc is dead on !!

  33. gilhealy Says:

    @Buc2015- well said, and exactly right. Kobe- he is an amazing talent. I’ve watched every game this kid’s played, college and pro, at least 3 times apiece. He’s special for sure. And well worth the wait.

  34. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @Jolly buc fan agree with most of what you except on the pass that you and others called a 50-50.In his presser Koetter said the play was a post pattern and that Evans had inside position. thinking that ball should been thrown
    between Evans and the goalpost where Evans was looking,not toward the back corner.Koetter also said that Peterson used his hands to stop Evans and I saw a pushoff.Koetter also said offensive player would get a PI callif they did this.
