“I Think He Needs More Opportunities”

Dirk Koetter weighs in on VIncent Jackson's struggles.

Dirk Koetter weighs in on Vincent Jackson’s struggles.

This is a not a fantasy football alert — or a bad dream.

Today at One Buc Palace, JoeBucsFan.com’s own Ira Kaufman, Tampa Bay’s only Hall of Fame voter, asked Dirk Koetter if Vincent Jackson is being criticized unfairly.

The Bucs’ $10-million-a-year receiver has nine catches for 99 yards through three games and has developed butter fingers.

“I think Vince is fine. I think Vince is fine. I think he needs more opportunities,” Koetter said. “And I think that will play itself out.”

More opportunities? The Bucs, per the official stats, have thrown the ball his way 22 times. That’s already a solid workload.

eye-RAH! followed up to ask Koetter for comment on the chatter claming Jackson’s unenthusiastic, on-field body language is an issue.

“Check out my body language sometimes; it’s not good,” Koetter said. “Alright. When things aren’t going well, it’s easy to have bad body language.”

Joe’s pulling for Jackson. The Bucs desparately need him to play like himself. However, Joe doesn’t think V-Jax is “fine,” not at all. The evidence isn’t there.

I agree Joe. His play is dictating that something is not right with V-Jax.

  2. scott Says:

Like I said before. We have Jameis who threw to 8 different receivers. Limited amounts of targets to go around but Jameis himself said “I had VJ open.” Vjax even made a critical catch last game. He will have some monster games and be doormant some.. thats just how it is with a good QB who doesn’t force it.

  3. Bucnjim Says:

My father used to say that I needed a swift kick in the A$$ as an unmotivated teen. Kind of the way he has been acting! If I get to it I get to it and if I don’t oh well. Better throw it right to me and even if you do there is a good chance I might not hang on. I guess you could call him a lazy infielder! Hit it right to me and I will catch it. If you don’t it is all on you or someone else!

  4. Trubucfan22 Says:

His body language was not good in our win against the Falcons either. I am a worried that Vince is not happy for some reason. Could be his role in the offense, could be with his QB, could be just old age. Guys get grumpy as they get older (or so I hear). Not sure what it is, but he hasn’t been on the same page as JW, lot of miscommunication between those 2, more than any other receiver has had. I had high hopes that a healthy VJ would make this offense better, but it seems like his play on the field has actually made Winston worse when throwing toward VJ. Bad completion percentage and a couple of INTs on VJ targets. Not cool. Hopefully whatever is going on will work itself out. We need VJ to be a producer if we want to take this team to the next level. An assist by the defense would be nice too….

  5. BucinJAX Says:

Steelers just release Daryl Richardson to make room for Le’Veon Bell.

  6. BigStinky Says:

This is probably the last year that VJax wants to play in the league. After he got hurt last year he may not want that to happen again, OR maybe he is still hurt. Besides, he has made enough money that he could quit at any time and be fine with it. He knows he can start writing children’s books and still have money coming in, not that he needs it. It’s time for us to draft another good WR anyway, OR pick up another one through free agency. We STILL need to draft another DE, CB, and safety to make our defense better. Our offense can already score OVER 20 points a game now and our defense needs to catch up talent wise because we ALL know that defense wins Championships.

  7. DB55 Says:

You got Shep and Martino itching to play yet you’re wasting reps on the old man. If you haven’t figured it out yet Jameis fav targets are the young guys hump, Brate, Evans and AS….oh wait.

Did you see that nasty fingertip grab shep made on Sunday.

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

I think thats the problem. This isnt his last year. He wants to play longer and he wants licht to negotiate a contract…licht said no and he is having a sissy fit.

I see another interception where keyshawn jackson going the wrong way and costing us a game

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Might be old-fashioned, but I could care less about someone’s body language. Don’t even care how much they get paid. What I do care about is ‘Can they get the job done?’ In VJax case, he’s 9-for-22 (41%) for a total of 99 yds. His longest is only 16 yds. Longest in 2015 was 36 yds; longest in 50 yds. In both years VJax only averaged a tad over 50% catching the ball (low but he’s traditionally been a deep threat). This year he’s not being used deep nearly as much as in the past it looks like, and his reception rate is significantly down. Also doesn’t look like he’s getting much separation, but hey, I’m not a coach. I agree with BigStinky that this is probably his last year, and also think he might be feeling the effects of last year’s injuries. One thing I am sure of though is that VJax is a Pro’s Pro, and he wants to give his best at all times.

  10. Rojas Says:

Just read a report Josh Gordon future in doubt with browns, after entering himself in rehab.

  11. Chris Says:

And someone mocked me when I said maybe Dirk had Jameis start targeting VJax on the last drive. Yeah, I believe he did it to please a sulking Vince Jackson. He confirms it here by saying we need to target him more. Jacksons jealous and upset he isn’t a number one and Mike Evans is.

  12. Chris Says:

Ask San Diegonif he gave his all when things don’t go his way

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    Cranky old man.

  14. Louis Friend Says:

Jackson is as stand up a human being as can be found in the NFL. He’s also an aging veteran who is dealing with depleting skills. I think he’s frustrated at himself, not at his role or his targets. The Bucs are just having a hard time admitting he’s declined.

  15. Guzzie Says:

Big receivers fall of a cliff in terms of production, just like our bucs to pay a 34 year old receiver for $10 million instead of drafting an early round receiver

  16. Kobe Faker Says:

“I wanted to be drafted by the tampa bay bucs and play in front of poster KobeFaker” Sterling Shepard

  17. Etzel Says:

Rather see what short Cecil can do (when healthy). Speed could grease the proverbial offensive wheel.

  18. ElioT Says:

Could it be that VJax is dealing with some type of injury/illness and the Bucs (knowing they have no one else to take attention away from #13) are trying to spin this thing?

I’d be interested to get a real Xs and Os diagnosis from someone like STEVE WHITE… cough cough JBF $$$$

Guys like Vincent don’t just wilt away into oblivion. Something is wrong here…

    Go Sucs!!!

  19. unbelievable Says:

Koetter obviously didn’t want to speak about V-Jax, but we saw in the ATL game that his body language was off, even while things were going well.

  20. ElioT Says:

    Kobe Faker is a dumbass!

You think VJax is looking to renegotiate with sub par play? He’s making $10mil and extremely overpaid at that (albeit if anyone on this team deserves to be overpaid it’s Mr. Jackson). That’s not a position to negotiate you f**kin troll.

God damn, I get your motives but be more creative jacka**.

    Go Sucs!!

  21. Bucs Ace Says:

Too early to write this guy off yet….he might be the best receiver the Bucs have ever had

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Chris hit the nail on the head with this comment – Jacksons jealous and upset he isn’t a number one and Mike Evans is.
He has become little more then Mike Evan’s decoy, in this offense.
Jameis flat out missed him last game, for the winning TD.

It really is too bad we gave up on ASJ. The Jets have embraced him, and Brandon Marshall has stepped up to be his mentor. Another player in the long list of talent we have discarded, because fielding a team of goody goody choirboys seems more important then winning. LOL, we have to play the Jets next year. Blount is leading the NFL in rushing, and Talib will probably have another all pro season.

  23. ARGH_M8E Says:

WE NEED HEART!!!!! We used to have it… not saying Vincent doesn’t, but we need it BAD!!! Remember……..?

  24. Greg Says:

Yeah, let’s give him more chances to let balls go right through his hands again, and by all means, do it when you are trying to score the winning touchdown!

  25. ElioT Says:

You guys are some serious dumbasses.

  26. godzila13 Says:

There is nothing wrong with Vincent Jackson. He wants to win.

  27. MegaDaveUK Says:

Joe you have been so salty on Vjax this year. Jameis refuses to throw accurately at him watch the tape and hop of Vjax nuts jeez

  28. Bob in Valrico Says:

Everything going on with Vjax is not all on VJAX.Jameis has not been as efficient since he faced the better defenses. He had 15 off target passes in the Arizona game.AT least three were to VJAX early in the game.VJAX may be
slowed somewhat but there is no excuse for Jameis to throw two yards behind a receiver on a crossing route.VJAX appeared to used as a decoy in most of ram game.We need both Jameis and VJAX to work through this.We will not get far with only two wide receivers catching passes.
We have got to do a better job in the redzone, plays are breaking down and Jameis is being forced to ad lib.

  29. Da Fonz Says:

Once again VJAX is Roddy white 2.0. Roddy White was acting the same way Vincent is right now.

  30. TEBUCS Says:

He played the same way for a few games when Freeman was benched for Glennon.. It looked like he was not running hard and dropping passes on purpose. Go back and look…. Same body language and everything that’s how he is when something is bothering him.. If true, it maybe what Koetter is talking about “bad culture”.. Just saying.
