Evans Iced On Final Drive

What was most stunning about the Bucs’ final drive yesterday had nothing to do with the Jameis Winston overthrows or the Vincent Jackson jelly hands, or the poor clock management by Dirk Koetter.

It was the fact the Bucs never threw to their most dangerous weapon, Mike Evans.

The Bucs got off 10 plays on that final drive against the Rams, in what was their last attempt at a winning touchdown needed to overcome their kicking woes.

But Evans wasn’t targeted once during that drive, despite having caught 10 of the 13 previous balls thrown his way for 132 yards and a touchdown.

He was the Bucs’ most valuable weapon on the field, and he was iced by his own team.

Of course, Evans might not have been open. (Joe will wait for the film later this week.) But Dirk Koetter is a skilled playcaller and there are ways to get Evans the rock, or put Evans’ big body in position for the 50-50 balls that he often finds ways to pull down.

It sure seems like the Bucs missed an opportunity to exploit their top target at crunch time.

Yeah, Vince mr ambivalent Jackson gets targeted, the Dancing Bear, Simms, but no Evans or Adam Humphries? Two biggest weapons all day in the passing game

Seems vjax whining got in winstons ear and that is sad, just throw it up to evans like jonny football did at A&M and what jaboo is doing now, ME is a difference maker and only one the bucs have aside from JW

  3. Chris Says:

I agree, something happened with play calling . After VJax threw his fit and sat by himself, Koetter talks to him and he gets targeted twice near the goal line. That frigging one pass, he batts it into the air like he’s playing beach volleyball. If his heart ain’t there , just go home and sit like he did when he was at San Diego.

  4. Joehelldeloxley Says:

Mike Evans attitude has really improved, almost no penalty, head focused on the game and we have to build on that !
On this kind if situation, you must play on your stenght and Mike Evans is clearly one of them.

  5. buc15 Says:

Evans was most likely doubled by the Rams. You throw to who is open & I seriously doubt Koetter changed play calling because a player wasn’t happy.

Jameis, did not look v-jax way most of the night, he was locked on Hump and ME, not that its a bad thing, but many plays he did not go through his progressions, I think the film will show, Vjax open a lot of times. Bucs need to sneak one the games in the next two week s for their psyche, preferably the Panthers, because everybody in the division has losses and they are all even if Saints win tonight

  7. Pickgrin Says:

Need to re-watch, but I’m guessing the Rams took away the options to Evans that drive and Winston was taking what was available and throwing to who was most open or single covered.

    Nice game by Evans.

Sucks to lose at home to a team we should have beaten…

Was at the game and watched a lot of what V-Jax was doing. I don’t care what they are saying… He has lost a step big time. He was covered most of the plays. The timing is off with he and Jameis because V-Jax is slower. Jameis is throwing him the ball to a spot anticpating V-Jax to get there and he can’t. Most of the times V-Jax can’t even get his head around to see the ball. I feel like Jameis respects V-Jax and is trying to keep him happy so he forces throws his way (particularly in the Cardinals game). V-Jax needs to chill with the pouting cause he’s the issue.

    @joe

It’s who Koetter is ask a Falcons fan about Koetter not calling plates for Julio. Oven been ranting about this for the last 18 or so hours. ME is and VJax is 6’5 there size is there skill set there not going get wide open down there.

Go back to the week 3 of the preseason when Winston hit ME for the fade for a TD. And Evans said he was surprised that was the play because they never work on that.

Why the hell at the least don’t you practice that for defensive purposes because your starting corners are 5′ 9 on their tallest of days?? In the NFC SOUTH you have Julio and Sanu and Carolina’s other two tight ends Benjamin and Funchess

  10. iamkingsu Says:

This is Schiano’s “not sticking with the no huddle because they didn’t practice it” level of incompetence we’re seeing.

  11. Mikeck Says:

You might WANT to go to Evans but who you throw to is dictated by the coverage. If they have Evans “hi-lo”…one guy in front and a safety behind, you DONT throw there. Is up to the WR to beat the coverage and get in a position where the DBs are out of position.

If VJ is the right read, it’s going to VJ. They all are supposed to catch. BUT…why are we worried about the OFFENSE! Joe! All of these articles complaining about the offense. How about the D giving up big pass plays?

  12. iamkingsu Says:

    Mikeck

It’s easy to isolate defenders by formation alone. But this always been the knock on Koetter.

  13. Kobe Faker Says:

    Alot of great posts here.

ME is definately getting better. @ more years with Monken coaching he can be one of the elite.

Get Keyshawn Jackson out of the field and replace him with Russel Sheppard. that catch was amazing . they will and determination to lay out your body and never ever drop the ball was 1 of the best catches this week by any receiver in the nfl. Sheppard wants to win. truly a great teammate and team player

Jameis. Damn, his progression is not going to be stopped. Unlike the majority, Kobe thinks long term, conceptually and fundamentally. Jameis train is moving positively forward which all that matters and not even Licht can slow or hinder the process completely

very enlightened and inspired by jameis development

  14. Bucamania Says:

Vjax is a problem. Wish Cecil Shorts III was healthy so they could start to work him in at #2.

  15. JJBucFan Says:

iamkingsu is exactly right, when we go no huddle we are pretty much unstoppable, Winston doesn’t over think, just plays. This is the same way he was at FSU. We seem to keep shutting this down throughout the game and we go 3 and out for a couple series and then we run it again and are successful again. You don’t have to run the hurry up just because you go no huddle, it keeps the same personnel on the field on defense and they tire out. Should run it all the time, give Jameis a LONG look at the defensive formation.

  16. Eric Says:

    Lovie Smith’s fault.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

dirk is suppose to be a offensive guru….you mean to tell me that he couldn’t figure out how to get mike in single coverage…or run a rub(pick) route for him…I mean come on….so far this season he’s been our best player on offense….dirk should man up and admit he f’ed up instead of trying to throw his players under the bus….they player hard didn’t quit but the defensive scheme was horrible again by smitty mixed with bad clock management…that’s coaching….GO BUCS!!!!

  18. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    I agree with Kobe Faker!!!
Evans has been the most developed player this season. Concentrating, catching the sometimes impossible catches..no trash talking..I am so impressed, predicting he will be a top receiver for sure..

Jameis in his 2nd year is also the talk at my home..I wish we would just keep going no huddle..
