Bucs On Pace For 26 Sacks

Difficulty breathing on quarterbacks

If you have one sack for the Buccaneers, you own a share of the 2016 team lead.

Five Bucs have one sack each through three games: Gerald McCoy, Noah Spence, Robert Ayers, Kwon Alexander and Lavonte David, who got a quality coverage sack yesterday against the Rams.

As a team, the Bucs are on pace for a 26-sack season. That’s not pretty. Tampa Bay hasn’t had less than 35 sacks in a season since 2012, when they had 27 in the first year under Commander Greg Schiano.

Sacks surely aren’t everything, but they are indicative of the quality of your pass rush. And in this case, the data is on point. The Bucs haven’t been successful at a quality rate against three rather immobile quarterbacks in Matt Ryan, Carson Palmer and Case Keenum.

The losses of Jacquies Smith and Robert Ayers have been brutally evident. And it’s pretty stunning how much the Bucs’ pass rush has evaporated since Ayers was lost to an ankle injury during the first half against the Cardinals in Week 2.

The Bucs aren’t good enough to get pressure on opposing QBs even when McCoy is double teamed.

In the deepest defensive line draft in 20 years we take……………

@joe says…..The losses of Jacquies Smith and Robert Ayers have been brutally evident…..

true indeed….BUT…smitty was suppose to be a great defensive coach with a great mind….some even said guru….with the number of sacks we have so far combined with his defense giving up an average of 33 points per in these 3games he will be out of a job very soon….how about drawing up some blitz from the safety position since conte cant cover….or send VHG on a corner blitz….or blitz LVD since he was so successful at it with schiano….the defense has regressed under smitty….simple as that…GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Destinjohnny Says:

In the deepest defensive line draft in 20 years we take from florida state Roberto auguyo wow
Jason doesn’t get the big picture
Solid scout though but in over his head

  5. 813bucboi Says:

@Destinjohnny….blame that one on licht….so many for the taking and we took 1….GO BUCS!!!!

  6. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Yes Joes the loss of probably our two best pass rushers is hurting us very badly.

However were is the blitz? I think I caught maybe 1-2 yesterday.

ALL this talk of confusing fronts and mixing it up with a variety of blitzes… yet in-game ALL I see is a standard 4 man front rushing over and over.

Oh, not to mention CBs playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage…

Is Lovie secretly the D-Coordinator seriously what the hell is going on???

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Jacquies Smith going down sucked but how in the hell could a team go into a season counting and relying on a Jacquies Smith to be successful. The dude has had a few good games but spends more time hurt than anything. if you are going to gamble on fragile players you are going to loose. It won’t be long before the akeem spence and gmc are missing games regularly just like martin will not return productive this season. mentally and physically weak team… it’s hard to watch.

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Pass rush? What pass rush? Are you freaking kidding me? The Bucs pass rush is missing in action. Watching Fisher get another win against the Bucs just gripes my ass with disgust.

  9. lurker Says:

wasn’t there some sort of dline coach savant, a sack whisperer, from cincy that was supposed to work wonders?

  10. I know why Says:

Noah Spence has been beat out by an undrafted player…already. In fact, Noah/tackles Spence has played in three games with 1 tackle. That will aid in the 26 pace sadly…

  11. D-Rome Says:

On an unrelated note was anyone here actually at the game? I was 11 rows up from the Rams bench and in the sun most of the day. I think yesterday was the hottest day I have ever experienced in Florida. I heard two people needed medical attention because of the heat. I got to the game hydrated and prepared. The heat doesn’t bother me but still I was surprised it was so hot. I think Ira said the heat index was 115 degrees.

  12. thunderchunkyPA Says:

813, I agree, when I flew down for camp, that’s all we would hear. it’s going to be a 4-3/3-4 hybrid attack defense. My rear, Mike Smith, Jay Hayes, were supposed to fix that. Look at Philly, it’s Fletcher Cox and the Pips and they are making it work. And don’t get me started on Verner who is supposed to be back to pro-bowl form since his old coach is on staff. Man this just blows…

  13. LargoBuc Says:

I dont know what to say. The talent just isn’t there. Not on the line or the scondary. I don’t care who the defensive co is. And as far as blitzing, do you really trust our secondary to cover 1 on 1? Do you expect them not to look lost on a zone blitz? There is probably a reason why the front hasn’t looked as varied as Mike Smith said it would.

  14. Glenningrad Says:

I really feel that a splash D end could have been had in FA, one with more consistency and talent than Ayers. Would be great if we had a secondary that could consistently make the QB hold on to the ball

  15. Chris Says:

Yeah Jay Hayes has worked his magic with the best natural pass rusher to come out in years

  16. orlbucfan Says:

Knock off the HC/GM Musical Chairs for a couple more years. Smith…..snort, snort……….I have been posting constantly for him to start Banks. This game proved it. Bench Conte. Please, before Denver comes in. Storms were already gathering over here on the east side of central FL. Not surprised to read that it was the Frying-in-the-heat Bowl. Good thing a storm stopped the game in the final minutes. I don’t know about others’ opinions on here, but Kwon, LVD, and GMC played playoff caliber D yesterday. NFC South is already a mess. Ain’ts beat the Chicks tonight, and Bucs will stay in first placed tied w/stinkcats.

  17. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Let’s see…Our QB has 19 games…yep not even twenty games under his belt.
He came out after only two years of college experience…he’s only 22…he hasn’t yet walked on Tampa Bay he still needs a bridge.

Geez let’s whine about how Wentz is better and Dak Prescott and yada yada

Our HC is now 3 games into his career..1-2…can his arse

Our DC..also 3 games with this team and a new defense…he’s awful..fire him

    Our kicker is choking…fire him.

GMC sucks..trade him and LVD because…well just because they’ve played for all the losing Buc teams.

Damn that’s a lot of personnel moves for some of you. Should we bother to waste our time watching this team when so many “experts” here have pointed out our franchise QB sucks…our DB’s…DL..our entire defense sucks.

Forgive me for being the contrarian here. Buc Bonzai and a few others who are on the contrarian bandwagon.

I believe rather than a knee jerk reaction I’m going to wait and see how we play the final 11 after the bye. Doug will be back…Ayers will be back…Smitty will have five games to teach his D…and yes..our 22 year old QB with two years of college and 19 games might actually improve. Oh noes say it isn’t so.

We sucked yesterday…so did Carolina. Like us they are 1-2. Somehow I do not believe they or their fans have written off the team. Fan is short for fanatic. Are the Panther fans better than us? More fanatical?

So many people breaking their necks jumping off the bandwagon. I’m still on board…as Chris says I would have a positive view of the apocalypse. LMAO

Because Chris came up with the perfect analogy to describe his and many other posters views…the Bucs suck in apocalyptic terms.

  18. grafikdetail Says:

they better get greg hardy on the phone asap LOL

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    StPete

you can not for a minute truly believe Doug Martin will be back and productive from a hamstring injury at this point in season. Sorry that is not going to happen. he will be useless when he returns. martin will be in and out of the lineup with very little production the remainder of the season. that is best case scenario. Bucs need to plan accordingly versus being pie in the sky with doug martin returning healthy given his history. licht already went pie in the sky counting on Jac Smith to play DE for the entire season. Too many key players with horrendous injury histories.

  20. 911bucs Says:

    St Pete
I’m all onboard with JW and agree there should be no whining about these first year guys winning games. It’s really really frustrating that these teams are somewhat successful with first year guys, it says everything about the organization and the coaching staff. They are giving these guys the tools to succeed, unlike the Bucs. I really don’t care if JW throws 200 yards a game if it shows up in the win column. A win is a win is a win, give this guy the tools to succeed. You you could say ya but they put up 31 against the Rams but we’re pretty much shut down against Az.

  21. Buc 4ever Says:

It’s all about no defensive pressure from the line. There is no one on our team who can bring pressure from the outside. Bring in Greg Hardy before it’s too late. It was hot as hell watching Case Keenen have 10 seconds to survey the field before throwing a pass. Yes our safeties are play poor but you can’t expect them to run with Austin for that long. First home game of the new season and I am ready to give away my seats for rest of the season. Raised my prices for this mess! Bring in Hardy!

  22. D-Rome Says:

…Smitty will have five games to teach his D…

    Five games?

You do realize he’s been here since January right? The team had had OTAs, the entire off season, pre-season, and many practices. The defense has been learning the plays this entire time.

No one is saying to fire the coaches or trade away all players, well no one sane anyway. The local media, the Joes, most of you…they all suggested we’d see marked improvement so long as Lovie wasn’t the coach. Well, by most measures this team is worse than any team coaches by Lovie, Schiano, or Raheem through three games. All I know is Mike Smith better figure it out if he ever wants to be a head coach again. This year is his dress rehersal.

  23. Tampa Tony Says:

    @st Pete
Panthers have lost against two undefeated teams. Bucs lost to a previously anemic Rams team and the cards who got smashed by the Bills.

It’s funny when I have a point how our #1 draft pick doesn’t look to be at the same level of other young QB’s you have no response. How long do we make excuses for winston until we label him Freeman 2.0?

Frustrating as a fan that other teams can find smart accurate QB’s and have rookie coaches turn teams around faster than the Bucs

  24. Tampa Tony Says:

Other coordinators (Jim Schwartz) don’t need this much time why does smith?

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

it says everything about the organization and the coaching staff.

It also has something to say about the competition.

We still do not know who some of these teams really are?

Again…According to Tampa Tony Dan Quinn would have been a genius…you know one of those fine young coaches who “turned around the culture” of the Falcons a lot faster than our coaches…Five straight wins to start the season. How did the Falcons end up? How will the Eagles end up? The Vikings?

  26. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Sterling Shepard: 16 catches 233 yards 2 TD
    Noah Spence: 1 tackle

This is what drafting for need gets you

  27. 813bucboi Says:

@largobuc says….I dont know what to say. The talent just isn’t there…..

I agree…but no one was saying that last year when the talent wasn’t there either…..

@tampatony…I agree….some coach know how to get the most/best out of their players

@creamsicle….damn…I aint know he balled out like that….GO BUCS!!!!

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

^^^Yeah, but Sterling doesn’t have a cool nickname like Spence!

  29. ElioT Says:

I’ve been very critical of McCoy in the past, but now I just feel sorry for the guy.

8 years in and the most help he’s had is Ayers who is a good, not great player.

Really a drastic failure on the Bucs’ part to never get this guy help.

    Go Sucs!

  30. Another J Says:

I didn’t even see Spence on the field for more than 2 plays yesterday…

  31. 813bucboi Says:

@ANOTHER J….the sad part is an undrafted player played most of the snaps….GO BUCS!!!!

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t matter one Iota. The defending superbowl champs are rollin into Ray Jay this Sunday like they own the place. 1-3 here we comes!!!!!!!
