What’s Wrong With Roberto Aguayo?

August 20th, 2016

Aguayowide

Last week was understandable. Tonight was downright scary.

It was “butterflies” that plagued Roberto Aguayo in Philadelphia.

Tonight in Jacksonville? Perhaps it was a soggy shoe.

Joe has no idea how rookie Aguayo, a Bucs second-round pick, missed an extra point last week in Philly and badly shanked a 32-yard field goal attempt tonight. Later, he missed a 49-yarder.

There’s really nothing to say. It’s the kind of thing that leaves you speechless. Joe’s only printable reaction was “Bada Brindza!”

It’s way to early too freak out, but it’s not too early to start thinking about it.

he needs a hug or maybe there is too much cursing going on now that Lovie is gone and he is distracted. I am confident he will right the ship… Not sold it was the best use of a draft pick but now it’s a done deal I am pulling for him.

  2. Bucs Scout 1493246788 and counting Says:

Jason Licht’s backside is very puckered right now.

  3. Mike Johnson Says:

Kids gonna be allright. He has just got to settle down. Get out all of his jitters in preseason. Come regular season though, he’s gonna have to step it up. We tend to play at least 3 to 5 games yrly which are decided by field goals. This is the big league son. You gotta step up or..put your foot and heart into it. Either way, He’s a 2nd rder meaning we will probably keep him at least 2 yrs. I got this feeling though he’s gonna be just fine. He will get better….I hope!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo has sin comentarios…..look it up.”

  5. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans' Says:

He looks ‘scared to fail’ which is kinda like playing ‘not to lose’ instead of confidently attacking the situation. I’m worried about for d@mn sure at this point. Seems similar to mike evans’ drop issues last year. Pressing too hard

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We could package him up with Mike Glennon and perhaps get a late rounder….(sarcasm)

  7. Bucs1975 Says:

I think Licht is learning why you don’t take a kicker in the 2nd round…needs to bring in some competition but can’t

  8. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Well if he was wearing those same red tights as in the picture on the field this evening that could explain things.

Dude just needs a cape and he can morph from a kicker to a superhero.

Takes some cojones to show up on an NFL field dressed like that. LMAO

And I’m one of his fans!

  9. Tackleblockwin Says:

As long as his “clutch” rating is like a 99 😉 jk

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Damn U its bad when Joe’s speechless.

  11. Tbbucs3 Says:

If Aguayo is nervous now, he’s gonna be wetting his pants in the regular season. No excuse to miss when it starts to count.

  12. Name Required Says:

The words “he sucks” come to mind. It’s ok to say it.

  13. iamabuc Says:

Tiene que apretarse los cojones, and focus…I’m rooting for him to do alright. Arriba Aguayo!

  14. Eric Says:

Kick offs are nothing special either

  15. Alan Bucs Says:

People secretly rooting for someone to fail. Classic case of this. Does it make us feel better about ourselves when he misses so we can all say I told you so? How stupid people can be. SMH.

  16. SOFIERCE Says:

Time to get a kicker off the streets to challenge him?

  17. Boatrunner Says:

Why the Bucs would waste 2 draft picks including a 2nd rounder on a kicker beyond Comprehension. Kickers are head cases and can go from hero to zero in a very short amount of time.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Heh…it’s okay to say it? Under a username that requires no accountability?

    lol

Maybe it’s because my life is going to amazingly well (better than ever) right now, but I have zero worry over the kid…or anyone else on the team.

In fact, I’ve already come to terms with the possibility of going 1-5 to start the season. Anything better will bring celebration in my house.

  19. Mark Biggens Bachman Says:

Bobby “Poncherello” Aguyo has been missing in practice all training camp, yet we’re not supposed to “overreact” per the McClowns in the media? Kid has time to get his sh!t together, but not much.

  20. Dr A Says:

I don’t want to say this is one reason why you don’t pick kickers early but… too much pressure. He can kick theres no doubt, but can he handle the pressure of nation watching him? Hopefully he’ll get used to things by the time the regular season starts.

  21. SOEbuc Says:

If this kid doesn’t start to produce (especially in regular season), Im gonna drowned Jason Licht in his pool with his $2000 suit on

  22. Buc53 Says:

He doesn’t suck. He’s better than Hopkins and Gano–both FSU kickers who have NFL jobs. He needs a sports psychologist and he needs to break the slump, and he’ll be fine.

    If he doesn’t, well….

  23. MadMax Says:

Roberto and JW3 need to get that equilibrium established more consistently. I know its preseason and it was a friday night in Florida, but stuff was off. Hopefully Roberto gets it together and stops thinking too much or starts practicing too much. Anything below 40 in good weather should be automatic barring a blocked kick.

  24. MadMax Says:

saturday night, after a “friday night”…..shouldve been more clear

  25. Ben the GA Buc Says:

    Time to call Connor Barth?

  26. Capt Blighe Says:

Gotta bring someone in to light a fire under his a$$.
If he misses twice under 50 in the whole regular season that’s a disapointment.

  27. Trubucfan22 Says:

You never want a kicker to ever get butterflies or have confidence issues. It is a slippery slope. The mind is a powerful weapon. It can hurt or help you. Right now it is hurting Aguayo. I do hope he can over come this. But history is not on his side. A kicker has to have nerves of steel, butterflies are not a good sign. I had hoped our kicking problems were finally over, looks like they have just begun.

I still wont say it was a bad pick even if he does bust, we needed a kicker badly. Unfortunetly kickers are players too, and like all players, they don’t always pan out.

  28. Destinjohnny Says:

This is a team with holes.
    You build through the draft.
You can’t waste a second round pick on a kicker.
Barth was middle of the pack

  29. T REX Says:

The problem is that a kicker can be replaced at anytime. If he’s not good from day one you can’t keep him. He either makes FGs out of the gate or he’s toast. You can’t keep a bad kicker. Mid-season and he’s under 50% then you wasted that pick. It was a reach and Licht should get heat for it.

  30. Poor Glennon Says:

    If he’s 6-11after week 5. He’ll be gone.

  31. Tom S. Says:

Wasn’t Joe a fan of this pick? Meanwhile the rest of us fools thought it would be better to spend the 3rd and 4th round pick on, you know, football players. Which is sort of funny since some of us are FSU fans who saw Aguayo kick for 3 years (including that wonderful game losing blocked kick at GTech). We also saw his FG% get worse each year, but they were all outside of NFL kicks, right GM? He’ll mortar kick for us they said.

Licht really fooled you Joe. I like him overall. He obviously didn’t care about what outside voices thought when he took Jameis number one overall over “Golden Boy” Mariota, but someone needs to tell him when he has a stupid idea once in awhile and not get blindsided by the criticism on draft day with that dumb look on his face when the press told him about how he was being laughed at by the league over it.

Stupid pick then. Stupid pick now.

  32. Waterboy Says:

It’s all mental with kickers and there’s a lot of pressure being put on the guy because of where he was drafted and everything he does is being viewed under the media microscope.

  33. Brent bull/buc Says:

I agree with you destin Johnny. Even if Aguayo has a good year you don’t trade up to the 2nd Ed to get a kicker. They aren’t worth it. We could have used those picks to add some quality depth at wr and lb. I’m rooting for him but it is just preseason.

  34. nate12345 Says:

WE could of drafted a wide out in the 2nd round!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. BigHogHaynes Says:

He has two more preseason games to audition for the job, but this was and will forever be a bad pick! Simple as that! Damn sure ain’t LOVIE’S fault!

  36. AceMcBuc Says:

I have to agree with Alan Bucs here, after all..Adam Vinatieri and Stephen Gostkowski didn’t have very good starts to their careers, however they turned out OK. How bout we let these young guys actually develop, before we start beating them up? It’s not the players fault where they were selected in the draft. Then there’s the fact that this is…Preseason!

  37. Jim Palm Harbor Says:

What pressure? He kicked at much larger crowds at Florida State than the two pre-season games.

  38. Mike30#1bucfan Says:

You should always have two kickers in training camp to help out the #1 kicker so that he doesn’t get tired legs!!!!!

  39. dusthty rhothdes Says:

Picks like this trying to be smartest guy in the room are more ammo to leave licht in his pool, failed miserably in free agency thus far and waste picks on a kicker… hey licht my fantasy draft is saturday, should i go kicker early?

  40. Doctor Stroud Says:

I would say that he clearly has proprioception and should be put on IR immediately!

  41. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Licht is either gonna look like a genius for this draft pick or look like a idiot and right now it’s leaning towards idiot unfortunately. The league is laughing at us as of now. Still think he wo7ld of been ghere in the 3rd. Smh. I pray he pulls it together and just needs to calm down and ignore the pressure on being a 2nd rounder. Hopefully he gets this crap out of the way during preseason and is ready come sept. 11.

  42. Seminole Bill Says:

    Kyle Brindza is available

  43. SOFIERCE Says:

Perhaps he needs to wear glasses?

I say let’s pour on the pressure now either he goes down the drain now or wake up quick… No need to wait weeks for development with kickers IMO

  44. LakeLandBuc Says:

What is wrong with Jason Licht for wasting a 3rd and 4th for this BAG OF GARBAGE?. Licht has to go, look at his draft picks and his free agent signings. The guy is a Joke and this franchise is a JOKE.

  45. JMN Says:

Who was his place kick holder at FSU? The Bucs should be signing him ASAP!

  46. BuccaneEric75 Says:

BigHog, you are just as bad as the people who blame Lovie for everything. Let it go. He’s gone. Does it make you feel better that Licht isn’t looking good right now if it makes your point more valid? I swear you would rather see us go 0-16 this season than win a Super Bowl just so you can get rid of Licht. Some fan you are.

  47. Name Required Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai, glad your life is going well. Happy for you. Maybe you can go out there and kick.

  48. BucsGo Says:

Meanwhile Von Bell, the safety drafted right after our kicker, in NO last game had 7 tackles and 1 sack…

    This is depressing..

  49. D-Rome Says:

I am on record supporting this pick in the past. I thought it was a gutsy pick that could make Licht look like a genius. I hope Aguayo succeeds because this team really needs a good kicker. As far as I’m concerned Jason Licht’s seat should be warmer than yesterday.

  50. sumo Says:

The guy is going to be fine. Everybody needs to chill and quit talking about it.

  51. Pewter Power Says:

No excuse for this pick with how thin wr is.

  52. feelthepewterpower Says:

I recall Brady playing like absolute dirt in the regular season…in 2014. Media/Fans wanted him out of there…..only goes on to win the Super Bowl inflated balls or not.

the 49 yarder he missed he had plenty of leg on just pushed a bit right.

the 32 yarder he shanked to the right…he sidewined it with no follow throw with his legs through the goal posts….

no one mentioned his kickoffs though….the last one I saw he clubbed it at an angle and the receiver had to decide whether or not to take a knee….did the right thing and took a knee 5 yards deep. But he can kick it out of the endzone, let it hang high and short of the goaline, or a combo of both on the aforementioned directional kickoff.

he’ll have more reps, and his confidence will only continue to grow.

  53. DaRealistBucFan Says:

BUST. Just like i said on here as soon as we drafted him!!

  54. DaRealistBucFan Says:

Vinatieri and gostkowski weren’t picked in the 2nd rd.

    ———————————————————–

A bust already? Buccs fans really are that delusional. Ten plus years will do that to a fan base. Let’s give the guy at least a couple of years, lol. The sky isn’t falling, folks. He has a strong leg, just needs to tweak the mechanics a bit. The first game winner he hits, his confidence will soar and he’ll become a machine. Watch.

  56. JarvisMoss Says:

I’ve followed Aguayo since his FR year at FSU and he had few bigger fans than ME! That said, I realized his weaknesses, namely leg strength & the lack of having to make ANY pressure kicks–in fact, the few that he missed in college were probably the most “pressure” filled kicks he ever faced.

His kickoffs were nothing special. With all that said, I constantly became annoyed with fellow FSU fans saying he was better than Janokowski–more consistent, yes, but NOT better. In fact, I think Graham Gano was better than Aguayo.

When the Bucs moved up to pick him #2, I puked in my mouth and hit the message boards ASAP to whine & complain. His leg strength is proven average & ability to kick under pressure is a complete ? it made NO SENSE.

This may go down as one of the worst picks in NFL draft history.
