Koetter Believes In Aguayo

August 24th, 2016
Behind his kicker.

Stands behind his kicker.

Boy, embattled rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo sure has folks worked up. Either that, or folks are almost as tired of preseason as players are of training camp.

Yesterday, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was (again) asked about Aguayo’s yips and Koetter believed it was mental. Then Koetter was asked if the Bucs need to sign a second kicker.

That didn’t seem to go over very well with Koetter.

“That would be a question you would need to talk to [General Manager] Jason [Licht] about but, I wouldn’t think that’s an option,” Koetter said.

Koetter is right. Joe will write more about this a bit later this morning. Signing a second kicker now is essentially throwing in the towel on Aguayo before preseason is over. That’s crazy.

Licht should’ve kept 2 kickers on the roster and had a completion, cause of now, it sounds like Aguayo might need a Kenny bell redshirt year.

  2. Clodhopper Says:

I’m just as freaked out and concerned as the next guy but we have to give Aguayo a couple games at least. Hopefully this is a learning experience for Licht. This how the fans and media are going to react when you spend such a high pick on a freaking kicker.

    Aguayo’s need our support!!

    Come on guys!

Practice “quantum physics” and send Roberto some good vibes!!

toxic fans destroy teams!! (just look at Phlly and New York) WORST FANS EVER!!

    So negative and hateful!

    thats why they SUCK

    We need POSITIVE LOYAL FANS!!

    GO Bucs!!

  4. Kalind Says:

Yea. Ignoring WR for the sake of a kicker was insane. Anybody see how Brax Miller is doing in Houston? Guy was a third round pick…looks like he’s locked down the third spot. Smh.

    We can’t win’em all.

  5. ARGH_M8E Says:

Watch your step… My jaw is still on the floor since the day we drafted a kicker in the 2nd round! I’m pulling for this kid tho, he’s here… Let’s roll!

Btw, who’s his mental coach? Hopefully he hired Dr. Bob Rotella, he’s worked with a ton of pro athletes, including some of golfs biggest names, (it doesn’t get much more cerebral then golf!) Peep this article by Dr. Bob on “How not to choke” http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2007/1126/162.html

He also has books, audio books and yada yada yada!

  6. T REX Says:

There’s a huge difference between stating the obvious and cheering for him to miss. I haven’t seen anyone do that. But saying the guy is struggling mightily is just stating the truth. The pick was a reach and he isn’t handling it well. I hope he turns it around but I don’t think he will.

  7. Jeagan1999 Says:

Give the kid a few more weeks. It’s pre-season….none of these games count. If he continues to miss easy kicks in practice, AND in the first game or two when the season starts….then the Bucs may have no other choice but to sign a veteran kicker. But for now, let the kid keep trying to work thru this rough start.

It would be a shame to have wasted a 2nd round pick on a kicker who can’t kick. Jason Licht would have some major explaining to do to the team and the fans.

  8. Tut Says:

I think he needs a consistent holder… The slightest change in the placement of the ball can change the outcome of the kick.

  9. BucMania Says:

They should have had a second kicker in camp to begin with.. Not to compete but to help Aguayo out during camp. He has no one to lean on or show him how to get out of this funk not to mention someone to share the reps. I think this was a bad oversight on Lichts part..

We need to get Connor Barth back (again)

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We should stand behind him like his players & coach…..

  12. Pickgrin Says:

The only thing to do right now is support Aguayo and let him work through this.

If he’s still blowing kicks after the 2nd or 3rd game of the season, then you have no choice but to bring in another kicker for this year and would probably have to carry 2 kickers on the 53 man roster unless there’s a way to get Aguayo on “IR”.

He won’t be cut or exposed to waivers this year – that I can pretty much guarantee.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

I don’t think we have the luxury to wait until week3 to see if he’s figured it out…we will most likely need him in week1 and week2 and if he blows the game we could be 0-2…if he blows wreck in the 3rd game and we’re 0-3, his confidence as well as the team and coaches will be shattered…at that point he would be struggling for 2 months….we had a kicker last year that blow it in the 3rd game and never recovered….dirk is right….now is the worst time to bring in another kicker because that would kill his confidence….the bad thing is, we cant wait for him to get his act together…he has to get this corrected within the next 2weeks….if he’s still missing kicks after the 4th preseason game, licht has to take action….licht’s seat is getting warmer with every miss….GO BUCS!!!!

  14. Buccfan37 Says:

We all have some degree of confidence in the Bucs chances in the coming season. Add confidence that Aguayo will likely miss a placekick here and there. That’s a bit down the list of serious things I’m concerned about.

  15. Pa Privateer Says:

Let’s bring in his holder from college……I am just throwing ideas out there

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

I believe in juran reed dt out of bama who we could have had instead who is destroying it in Seahawks camp and pre season games.
But hey who wants a dominating d line anyway.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

What do you expect Koetter to say? Lets kick our million dollar kicker off the team? I’m not very sympathetic to this kid. He’s kicked in bigtime major college venures successfully. Which means, he can kick. So cut the Psych BS Aguayo and earn your pay son!! The NFl is the bigboy league. Either you do, you don’t..you will or you Won’t !! No pacifier or diapers at this level son. Some guy way over in BF Samoa is smiling at your demise and waiting for his shot at your job. So cut it out and knock it off!! ball out. Do your Job or stand at the drive thru window and take my order!! And no Mayo on the burger…sir!!

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    JBF history was made today…

    I agree with Mike Johnson.

“licht’s seat is getting warmer with every miss”

LOL dude. Really??? You think Licht’s job is in any degree of jeopardy – even if they cut Aguayo tomorrow?

    #delusional

I am with 87…. Mike Johnson said it perfectly… i am amazed out how many fans on this site coddle professional grown men. This are not tee ballers that need a hug. this oversensitive society we live is disgusting and more importantly not even close to reality. toughen up butter cup work your way through it. kick the damn ball.
