A More Stationary Jameis On The Way?

August 7th, 2016

jameis 0517Interesting words from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

It’s well known that Jameis has improved his fitness, and many speculate that will help Jameis become a more mobile quarterback, even if that movement is just quickness in the pocket to extend plays. But it seems Jameis is eager to be a more stationary gunslinger.

Speaking Thursday on First Take on ESPN, Jameis said he’s focused on improving his “footwork” and “rhythm,” as well as staying more committed to the pocket.

“Getting the ball out on time in this league is very big,” Jameis said. “You know, you don’t got enough time to sit there and hold the ball even for 2-count sometimes, with these D-ends these day. So just my pocket presence. Feeing the rush. Not moving too much in the pocket, and just taking what I need and getting the ball out on time.”

It’s going to be some damn interesting to see how Jameis’ game matures in Year 2.

Twoย great things about Jameis are his self-awareness and quality instincts. He’s somebody who will adapt and adjust on the fly, the kind of quarterback who will change his game if something isn’t working. But for now, Jameis has a goal to be a more stationary QB.

    In Jameis we trust

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Every day i thank the football gods we have Jameis Winston to lead our team. Previous attempt at leadership over the last few years has been tremendously weak. Jameis will make the team more mentally tough with his focus and accountability

  3. DB55 Says:

I watched an FSU game recently and the time he had to throw was night and day. Same issue Glennon had no time in the pocket. The line must give them more than 2 seconds to throw the rock.

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

Soooooo he is going to play more like MG8??????

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

#3 needs to more of a matador like Marino. Difference is Winston is a threat to run. The game will slow down in year 2 and Winston will have another year to master his craft, dude will be deadly in years 3-10+

  6. DB55 Says:

Nah I’m just saying the line needs to give him more time to read n throw. At FSU he’d sit back there for 5 secs and destroy defenses. Even Marino needs more than 2 sec to throw the ball effectively.

Btw Joe are you planning a article on Jaboo hosting the special Olympians at 1bp today? The videos are enough to bring a grown man to tears. And the one kid who juked Verner and broke his ankles he was awesome! Jaboo makes me want to be a better person.

  7. R.O Says:

    From Thursday… It’s Sunday.
Congratulations on knowing the days of the week. –Joe

  8. LocalJoker Says:

If Jameis wants to be stationary, Donovan Smith better get better in a hurry. Spence is killing him in practice. I’m just sayin’!

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

DISAGREE TOTTALY! let jameis be who and what he is..period. Everybody cannot be a Brady or Manning. Jameis is at his best..being himself within the system. Would he do better stationary? Well, he’s better have the O line Manning had during his career. Then he can Mr. Stationary. But for now with this Buc team? Its better if he continues to mix it up. That’s his forte. Keep him in the pocket if you want to. Can you spell…Out for the season?

  10. SB with Jameis Says:

I watched the episode this morning. Totally impressed with the way JW handles himself in interviews. I am fully believing that he “gets it”. Not very often do you see that in a 21 yr old.

  11. SOEbuc Says:

I still wanna see some of those wonderful Jameis runs from time to time

  12. unbelievable Says:

I watched that video and it seemed like he was talking about not moving too much inside the pocket, so as to keep the o line in a good position for blocking.

Most QBs also become less prone to take off as they grow past their rookie year, but I suspect we’ll still see Jameis scrambling. Dudes got some moves.

  13. Brent bull/buc Says:

I’d be happy if he was just a pocket qb. Running gets qbs hurt..

  14. Waterboy Says:

I’m excited about Jameis going into year 2 but still worried about that offensive line. Last year he didn’t take as many sacks as he should have but took a heck of a lot hits and without Mankins I doubt they’ll be any better. Hopefully he’ll make it thru the season healthy.

  15. Kevin Says:

    I don’t think so Tim.

  16. Trubucfan22 Says:

What he is meaning to say is that he doesnt want to be like russell wilson constantly running in circles while in the pocket. He wants to set his feet and throw the ball in rhythem and on time.

Make no mistake, he will run if the play breaks down, or if the rush pushes him out if the picket before the receiver gets open. In the interview he talked about avoiding the unnecessary movement in the pocket, had nothing to do with him taking off on a third and 4 to get a first down.

  17. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’m surprised that Joe wrote “ESPN” in the article. ๐Ÿ˜›

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

SB, I’m trying to get in but apparently I have a login that I forgot about. Lol! You only got 71% with no point spread?! What happened?! ๐Ÿ˜› Let the trash talk begin!

  22. BuccaneEric75 Says:

SB, how will you find out the game scores? Montana has electricity? ๐Ÿ˜›

  23. SB with Jameis Says:

LOLOLOL………..Indeed Eric……….Let the Trash Talk Begin!!!!. May the Best Bucs Fan win………..That would be me tho. ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. SB with Jameis Says:

You’ll be A’ight DB…People get cocky later in the season and you can always catch em.

  25. 97bucs Says:

Jameis is and was the only man meant to come in and run this squad. He is exactly what this team needed after the last few years of complete dissapointment. There is no other qb that has come out in the draft that can be a motivational speaker to these guys and give them faith and trust and belief in themselves that they can do it since russell wilson. (Jameis+bucs=DESTINY) WORD UP SON!!

  26. JarvisMoss Says:

Yeah, I didn’t get that (reluctance to run more) at all from what he said. I took at as his ACCURATE REALIZATION that the quickness of your release is one of the greatest determinants of your success as an NFL QB.

Over the years I’ve closely watched Mariota vs Winston, and while I was one of the very first people on the JW-bandwagon, it’s become painfully clear to me that QUICK RELEASE is the biggest advantage Mariota has over Winston, even more than athleticism. If that other guy can master being an NFL QB the way he did the Oregon offense, he is going to be downright SCARY… but I digress,

because on the flip side, if JW can improve his release time (and not lose accuracy) he could also go a long way too! Where he still beats Mariota is instincts, natural strength (vs weight room strength), and pure DESIRE to win.

  27. BucTrooper Says:

This is what killed Freeman’s career.

  28. The Buc Realist Says:

    @BucTrooper

That and his work ethic, his nightlife, his lying, his mental capacity, his throwing accuracy, his surrounding himself with the wrong friends, his aloofness, his drug habits, his drinking, his self-accountability, ETC!!!!!

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

Buc Realist..Stop Lying. YOU do not know these things to be true. You are only quesstimating. Which you seem to do a lot of. You sound like a man I know who is running for President..lying all of the time and not having a clue or factual data.

  30. The Buc Realist Says:

    @mike johnson

jfro-6pak was in the NFL drug program, fact!!! Many around Tampa (including myself) saw him beyond drunk at Tampa establishments!!!! Fact!!!! He told lies to get out of Tampa!!! Him and his agent Threw many people under the Bus Fact to pass the blame!!! Fact!!!

Keep asking why no team will put him on the roster for the season!!!!
    Any questions now!!!!

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

Well I’ll be a horse’s A… Unsubstantiated facts by the nostradeamus himself..Buc Realist. You real pitiful man. You cannot prove anything you’ve said. I bet you stay up late nights J’aying off to the fox News network. You liar!
