“It Doesn’t Get A Whole Lot Better Than That”

July 26th, 2016

Predictable?

If you need to get back in the mindset for football, Joe’s got just the tonic for you.

How bout 20+ minutes of fast talkin’ iconic Bucs radio play-by-play voice Gene Deckerhoff at ACC Media Day? Fun stuff here from 92.5FM in Jacksonville.

Now 71 years old, Deckerhoff remains as feisty and energetic as ever.

A little Bucs chatter was weaved into Deckerhoff’s radio appearance, and he went out of his way to laud Mike Smith to the Jacksonville media who knows Smith well. “It doesn’t get a whole lot better than that,” Deckerhoff said of the Dirk Koetter hiring Smith to be Bucs defensive coordinator.

Plenty of love also went out to new Bucs linebackers coach Mark Duffner, who coached alongside Smith in Jacksonville and Deckerhoff remembered him as the University of Maryland head coach (1992-1996).

Joe points this out because Joe believes the hiring of Smith, who was wildly successful as a defensive coordinator with the Jaguars (data here), and the hiring of highly seasoned defensive position coaches, represent huge win-now moves. They ramp up expectations for Dirk Koetter. The belief by the organization is that Smith is the very best man to overhaul a defense in a hurry.

Joe knows many Bucs fans who believe Koetter has at least a few years a winning football team. Joe doesn’t believe Koetter has that much rope, not after being here last year and possessing a stud young quarterback.

  2. Brian Says:

I think the firing of one Smith and the hiring of the other Smith will wind up being the best thing this org has done in a LONG LONG time. GO Bucs!

  3. OneLove Says:

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am excited for the season!! Let’s go BUCS!

“Let’s make Tampa Bay GREAT AGAIN!!”

  4. JAB83 Says:

Not so just excited but truely optimistic. Its gonna be fun to be a true fan again and be the 12th man on the field and in (theyre heads) in the locker room…. Lets Inspire these guys to be champions and…..

    “Lets make Tampa Great again.”

  5. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Could we please stop with the “make anything great again”. It’s become a very bad joke in the greatest nation in the world ALREADY!!! No country is perfect and the Bucs will not go undefeated.

Lots of speculation about how much time Koetter gets. He’ll get the same time Lovie and Schiano got. If he is 4-10 this year and 6-10 next year…barring some major injury to #3 or another valid EXCUSE…Koetter will and should be gone.

Everybody in this league makes MILLIONS. I do not feel sorry for them that the pressure to win is so intense. If Schiano and Lovie never coached another game they’d be sitting on a pile of money large enough for their extended families to never have to work again. Koetter is also wealthy.

The late Al Davis got it right….”Just win baby”.

  6. America's Commenter Says:

If Mike Smith is successful in turning the defense around in one season, Dirk Koetter better make sure the offense improves. Otherwise, Koetter may be a one-and-done and Mike Smith may take over as head coach.

Smith’s resume is a lot stronger than Koetter’s. If Smith has a successful season, he’s bound to be a head coach in the NFL in 2017. They Glazers may be inclined to keep Smith around if Koetter falters.

Me either cause if team sucks smith is waiting in the wings. With all this losing its fever pitch attitude with fans..

  8. Bring bucs back Says:

Sorry guys, Deckerhoff is not good at calling football games. Too much homerim, diagnosis of the play takes too long and of course he can’t pronounce the word “yard” correctly. Good guy though.
