Day 3 Training Camp Notes & Observations

July 30th, 2016

trainingcampday3

The Buccaneers hit the practice fields this morning at One Buc Palace for the third day of training camp. Can you believe Tampa Bay is in Philadelphia in 11 short days playing the Eagles? Joe’s got all your need to know from this practice.

*Nice cloudy comfortable morning ruined by a lightning delay that sucked roughly 80 minutes from practice before it resumed. Joe felt really bad for the packed house of fans attending the first public practice. Before the delay, the Bucs got in about 40 minutes of drills, stretching and about seven plays of 11-on-11 action.

*No pads today. Hitting not permitted. HOWEVER, in that early 11-on-11 action was an ugly, foolish hit by Major Wright as the second units clashed. Safety Major Wright dealt a forearm to the head of tight end Brandon Myers after catching a roughly 12-yard pass. (Full story here). Wright was taken off the field after that play.

*Before that play, Brent Grimes flashed more A-list cover skills on a pass to Evan Spencer from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

*Jameis throws one of those lollipop short passes over the heads of rushing defensive linemen that drops right into the hands of Charles Sims. And to think some keyboard warrior mocked Jameis for such throws. Joe remembers Joe Montana making these same throws each game (no, Joe’s not comparing the two at all). One of the most dangerous things in the 21st century are wannabe-analysts with subscriptions to All-22 videos. Jameis still knows how to throw a good changeup.

*False start, undrafted rookie tackle Tayler Fallin

*Bit of a heated huddle up, a pre-fight-looking setup, at midfield with the offense on defense. Broke up fast.

*A couple of run plays were next. Of course, in underwear football, nearly every run is a touchdown.

*After the lightning delay, Charles Sims runs right and gets the edge. Crowd goes wild, but it is no-contact football.

*Mike Glennon throws to Cameron Brate. Fumble! But it did come just after the whistle. Camp meat linebacker Luke Rhodes with the strip.

*Incomplete. Glennon to Adam Humphries. Man, the defense is lively and swarming today.

*Doug Martin running hard and to the house. Crowd eats it up. No contact, but his shoulder pad pops out.

*Jameis seemed to struggle with the wet ball a bit. Low through incomplete to wide receiver Bernard Reedy. Way off.

*Quick out to Sims from Jameis.  Sims has got lots of juice in his legs.

*Camp meat alert. Nice touch pass 15 yards to the left side from No. 3 QB Ryan Griffin to Reedy.

*Roberto Aguayo goes 4-for-4 on field goals. BUT WAIT! He missed his next and final kick from what looked like 50 yards. It clanked the left upright.

*7-on-7 action starts with Vincent Jackson skying straight up for a ball from Jameis. Two-hand catch. #Dunkaneers

*Chris Conte with a sweet breakup of a Jameis-Mike Evans attempt about 40 yards downfield. Just a good football play. Good throw and defense.

*PICK! Jameis thrown behind a receiver running a crossing route. May have been Kenny Bell. Receiver tips and Brent Grimes plucks it out of the air with lightning-quick reflexes. Grimes was just a yard off the receiver. Much tougher play than it looks — with a wet ball, too.

*DROP! Mike James on a short pass.

*ASJ gets hit over the middle by what appeared to rookie Cassanova McKinzy. Joe had a bad angle, but there’s no hitting allowed. It seemed McKinzy might have been sending a message after ASJ lowered his head and shoulder into another player. Sloppiness. ((FULL VIDEO BELOW))

*Deep dig route complete from Jameis to Mike Evans. Fans are salivating. Can’t throw deep, eh?

*Another drop on a short ball from James. Troubling.

*Soft short toss from Glennon to Donteeay Dye. Short completion, but Vernon Hargreaves emerges fuming (and ripping out a naughty word) because he didn’t break fast enough to pick it or bat it away. Welcome to the NFL, son.

*Jacquies Smith looking big-time fast off the left edge. Yes, there’s no hitting allowed, but you can see the gear. This was against the second team. Smith was in Glennon’s face so fast it was ridiculous.

Mane.. Young man bringin some would. Grimes got that Darrel Green juice. Forever young.

  3. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Ohhh Joe thanks for camp notes..So Cassanova was NOT suppose to hit ASJ, full pads tomorrow..

    Man, I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Joe..I am getting the feeling that Cassanova McKinzy is going to make the team..is it a Kwon in the making??

  5. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

That D about to be so h3ll. All I can think about is what Wade Phillips accomplished in one season wit the broncos. So anxious to see these dawgs unleashed.

  6. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Glad you have a watchful eye on Jac Smith. 3rd and longs wit him and Spawn coming off those edges. Woah.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    NOSBOS

Grimes looks and moves like 23 not 33… Green was a great analogy

  8. Bob in Valrico Says:

Some form of prevent cover two was played here for the last two years .
Players were assigned a place to be to prevent them from swarming, making plays, and getting beat deep.

  9. salish_seamonster Says:

    “Camp meat linebacker Luke Rhodes”

Uh, Joe… You might want to check that. They’re excited about this guy. Once again, you’re demonstrating ignorance of UDFAs.

  10. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Tmax what’s good bro. And yea I imagine he’s super flexible those guys play effectively a ling time.

  11. SuperSam Says:

k first off Luke Rhodes camp meat? Last I heard he was running with the 2’S he will make the 53 trust me, or LB depth is thin. Secondly im beginning to wonder if these drops are caused by the way Winston is throwing the ball, it seems like the drops have doubled on the team since he took over quarterback duties. I cant remember Evans dropping this many balls 2 years ago with McCown and Glennon throwing to him, in fact didn’t he set the team touchdown record? …. something to think about.

  12. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Damn, salish, you sure do like throwing around insults.

  13. Owlykat Says:

Thanks for the quick report on today’s scrimmage for those who could not get a ticket there, Joe. So glad the Defense is aggressive this year! Hooray Smith is so quick this year!!! When Spence gets up to speed and comfortable with NFL speed we are going to have a super defense. The Offense will be better this year too.

  14. Joe Says:

Uh, Joe… You might want to check that. They’re excited about this guy. Once again, you’re demonstrating ignorance of UDFAs.

Didn’t know you were eavesdropping into Joe’s conversations with those in the know? No, his name didn’t come up but other camp meat players did.

Of course, publicly, the team is excited about every player they sign. smh

Joe just doesn’t go to One Buc Palace so he can drink free Coke Zero .

  15. tmaxcon Says:

    SuperSam

you also guaranteed the bucs were going to draft the fragile coach killer mariota… what is it a slow day over at the Titans site

  16. Joe Says:

I cant remember Evans dropping this many balls 2 years ago with McCown and Glennon throwing to him, in fact didn’t he set the team touchdown record? …. something to think about.

So the Bucs should get rid of one of the biggest quarterback prospects in years for a clown like McCown because Evans can’t catch?

So you would have cut John Elway and Brett Farve?

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    NOSBOS

i dont know what is good genes, something in the water, good diet or luck but every now and then a guy like green, grimes or even bernard hopkins defy logic and father time… glad we have him

  18. Buccaneers Says:

I think its funny that Joe keeps remind us that theres no hitting then i watch the clip of ASJ getting blasted and get excited…….Yeah I can see how underwear football is just a tease.

  19. Buccaneers Says:

SuperSam may have a point. Jamies Winston trhows line drives. Look at Evans and I could see how cathcing a Winston bullet is much more difficult then the lolipops he was used to from Manzeel and McCown.

  20. Greg Says:

I really enjoyed watching ASJ get hit

  21. Reelbuc Says:

    @SuperSam

Of all the ignorant folks on this site, you just took first place. Congratulations, you earned it!! Smh

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

Free Coke Zero, hmm enough said.

  23. Buccfan37 Says:

Nice recap, the anticipation is sky rocketing. Lightning and thunder.

  24. Supersam Says:

Ah yes I almost forgot, don’t ever call out Winston on this site, even though it’s all legit points.

  25. JGhoti86 Says:

Haven’t heard a mention of LVD through 3 days. I know without pads it’s hard for a lb to flash as often, but Kwon and even Rhodes and Mckinzy have been mentioned. Not a great sign his only mention through 3 training camp practices is a Major Wright hit…jus’ sayin’

P.s. LVD is one of my faves too…of course

Or should I compare with other commenters comments that he must be on the same level as Ryan Smith since he hasn’t been mentioned…food/football for thought

  26. Tbbucs3 Says:

    @Supersam

What are your legit points? How about NFL receivers learn to catch from a REAL NFL quarterback. Or we can re sign a QB like Josh Mccown who throw soft comfortable passes but only throws for 100 yards a game. This isn’t the nerf football league.

  27. JGhoti86 Says:

    @tbbucs3

Maybe we need Robert Herrons qb from Wyoming, Bret Smith or whatever his name was cause Herron was a lot better in college catching passes said dude. Heck if that happens, there’s our slot receiver and depth. Sarcasm of course! Had to piggyback on that one #maniacal

  28. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    What Tmax last said.

  29. JGhoti86 Says:

catching passes *** from said dude

  30. JGhoti86 Says:

    @supersam

Maybe we could coax the likes of Chad Pennington to come out of retirement or settle for a Jay Fiedler to do the same. I know Evans could have a 1200yd “down year” with those soft balls thrown his way 🙂

Ah yes I almost forgot, don’t ever call out Winston on this site, even though it’s all legit points”

Or, just like before the draft, you try to take any possible opportunity to be critical of Jameis. Taking Winston over Mariota was the right choice. Get over it.

  32. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    LOL!

  33. Buccaneers Says:

Well I thought superstar had a decent point because Winston, like Brett Farve, throws the ball very hard. Those passes are a bit harder to handle.

But I think you’re taking it to far to put any kind of blame on the QB for this. It should matter if the QB throws a pure duck going end over end. All a QB has to do is put the ball in a spot where his target can catch it. After that it needs to be caught, each man has to do his job and I don’t care if the ball is wet or its on fire. The wideout needs to make the catch. Undebatable

  34. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Oh c’mon guys now we’re really reaching. Again I’m a 68 year old dude who has been watching football since freaking black and white days.

My earliest memories always included one saying. Any NFL receiver who gets even a hand on the ball is expected to CATCH IT!!! Two hands with a drop and it’s not even high school caliber…unless of course a defender makes a great play.

If a player has trouble catching a ball from #3 because he throws it hard…as BSPN loves to say…”Cmon man!!!’ I’m with Joe…a guy who gets two hands on the ball and doesn’t bring it in consistently should be playing for Calgary not Tampa!

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here is my thought on incompletions…..if Jameis has a completion percentage of 55 and the receivers are near that then they are somewhat in line because his percentage is increased significantly when he throws to backs.
The lower percentage is caused by two things…..to many drops & some off target throws….I suspect both will be cleaned up this year and his percentage will be near 60%.
I don’t think there is near enough of a sample size to determine if there are any differences (shouldn’t be) between the receivers and the QB making the throws.

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    too many drops….

I do know that other Bucs sites have noticed this guy, and mentioned that the Bucs like him, Duffner likes him. They also note that he’s been running with the 2’s. He was a priority UDFA for them, I believe. So, my definition of camp meat is a guy who is not an actual threat to make the roster… and that does not seem to describe Rhodes…

  38. Defense Rules Says:

All last year I never heard ME13 complain once that Jameis threw the ball too hard. Mike did get ticked off at himself a number of times it looked like for dropping catchable balls however. Fans may be making a mountain out of a molehill here. Last year was their first year together, and chemistry takes awhile to develop I’d think. Probably more-so for some QB-WR combos than for others. Mike knows what he needs to do, he’s got some excellent coaches, and he’ll git ‘er done.

  39. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    Keep hittin him, Cass!

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    12 more days til preseason!

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

Only the pads tell the real story. They come on Sunday.

  42. SuperSam Says:

Take off your rose colored Winston glasses, there’s more to throwing the football than just hard or soft, Spin, Placement, trajectory are all factors. Winston is the quarterback no doubt, but he has flaws he still has a pitchers release which might be the cause of his inaccuracy’s. Keotter has said several times he was the last one to ” get on board with Winston” which makes me wonder why? He says he’s “all on board now” but I remember a coach we had named SCHIANO that once said ” im all on board with Freeman” and we all know how that ended.

  43. JabooBuc Says:

SuperSam is truly a dope. Did anyone else on the team experience issues catching the ball last year other than Evans? The answer is no. It’s the 3rd day of training camp and drops will happen from everyone. I believe Joe’s reports have included passes dropped with delivered by Glennon.

Get over your butt hurt of being wrong about Jameis and go troll the Titans site.

    ——————————————————-

While I agree that SuperSam is an idiot (still nursing his Mariota fetish apparently) – you may have forgotten the # of drops last year I’m guessing.

Everybody dropped passes. VJax, Humphries, Martin. Sims – they all dropped at least a couple or more catchable balls. It happens. Hell it was just a couple years ago that Joe’s nickname for Jackson was V-Drops.

Dye dropped way too many passes and Evans led the league in drops although he DID have a ton of targets and made quite a few big plays too last year.

Point is – it wasn’t just Evans.

Sam – you were not missed. Tell Robert9 and Barry and Patrick in Va and chickster and all the other Mariota knob bobbers hello and to please stay gone. You guys still sponsoring that Winston is a POS meeting under the troll bridge every week? Or is it bi-monthly now? I heard your anti-Jameis club membership has dwindled substantially…

  45. Buccfan37 Says:

I always liked Patrick in VA comments, he’ll be back. Everyone has an opinion, that’s great.

  46. BuccaneEric75 Says:

NFL receivers do not need the ball thrown to them slow to be able to catch it. if it was that easy everyone would be an NFL WR.

  47. JabooBuc Says:

Pickgrin, I think you would agree that most of the concern last year was over the drops by Evans. Yes, there were other drops but all receivers have drops. My point is that there was nothing that would indicate that Jameis was the problem. And, as a point of fact, I don’t recall FSU receivers having any issues with drops on the way to a NC and a final 4 finish.

As I said, SuperSam is a dope.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

Evans was targeted more than the other WR’s hence more drops. I’m not worried about Jameis to Evans.

  49. Buccfan37 Says:

Is that the same Major Wright who played basketball at U of Florida? If it is he was a good player.

  50. Buccfan37 Says:

smh.. no that was Major Parker, silly me.
