After “Private Conversation,” McCoy Will Follow Jameis’ Orders

It’s a new Gerald McCoy coming

Really telling stuff from Gerald McCoy today at One Buc Palace this afternoon.

McCoy explained that his leadership style is changing, courtesy of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

“Me and Jameis had a private conversation about what he feels like this team needs me to be as a leader,’ McCoy said. “I’m not going to say, but I think it will be obvious when it happens. Because you guys are used to seeing me do things a certain way. That’s going to change. Because the face of the franchise came to me and said, ‘Hey listen. If we’re going to win, we need you to do this. Our quarterback says this is what he needs, that’s what I’m going to do. Because he feels like that’s what our team needs in order for us to win, who am I to tell him, ‘No, I’m not going to do that.’ Because I want to win, too.

“He’s a very intelligent guy. Young or not, very mature, very intelligent, and he sits back and he watches and he analyzes. And he sees something that he feels like I could do to help this team to be better. And it’s not hard to do, it’s just a matter of me doing it.”

Whoa! Joe had to fire off a follow-up question.

Joe: Gerald, regarding the changes Jameis suggested you make. Without the details, is that a day-to-day thing that fans might see, or people watching practice? Or is that more of a gameday thing?

McCoy: A little bit of both. Internally, you guys won’t see it. But gameday, you guys may see it. You may even see it during training camp. … It’s not a very big thing, you know. He told me privately, so I won’t speak up and speak about it. It’s nothing like, ‘Oh, man, wait till you see this.’ I promise you. But he spoke with me privately. So when it happens it will be obvious. Oh, that’s what [Gerald] was talking about.

Joe can’t agree with McCoy downplaying this forthcoming change. It is a big deal, primarily because of his cooperation with Jameis, and because McCoy has the respect of his teammates.

Joe suspects Jameis simply told McCoy he has to get in guys’ faces whenever he sees something wrong — personally, tactically, professionally, whatever. Joe’s just speculating, but what else could it be?

Oh boy! Here come the GMC critics (See! I didn’t say “haters”).
Whatever it is, lets hope it helps this team come together and start winning football games.

  2. Fsuking Says:

Good follow up question. I feel like you got all there is to get out of McCoy. I’m excited that GMC is Jameis’s new 1st Lieutenant. Jameis is a great QB but first and foremost he is a leader of men

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Jameis setting the under achievers straighr love it

  4. BucswinBucswin Says:

I’m fired up!! Go Jaboo.. Lead this team out of the cellar . Past leadership hasn’t helped. There’s a new sheriff in town . Go Bucs!!!

  5. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Love it.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

The term “leader” was thrust upon McCoy whether he wanted it or not, whether he’s a natural leader or not.

I never thought he was a natural leader, just the best defensive player on a bad defensive team.

But leadership can be a learned skill. But someone has to teach it, and that someone needs to be a natural, instinctive leader.

Wanna bet a huge weight was lifted off McCoy’s shoulders?

I tend to agree with this. I remember hearing Booger MacFarland talking about Warren Sapp a few years ago stating that Warren was very vocal in holding people accountable. He said that if there was a missed assignment on a running play Sapp would get angry and ask everyone “Who’s gap?”

McCoy can still be the nice guy leader while holding (and himself) for doing the jobs they are supposed to be doing. He doesn’t have to act like Sapp but he can choose to lead like Sapp.

  8. D-Rome Says:

I wish I could edit a post. I meant to say “McCoy can still be the nice guy leader while holding other (and himself) accountable….”

  9. LargoBuc Says:

This here proves without a doubt, this is Jameis’ team.
Now what kind of change could McCoy be eluding too? Could it in fact be that Jameis is asking McCoy to be more of a rah rah in your face kind of leader? I think every defense needs that type of personality. However, you can hold your teammates accountable without being overly aggressive. Because we all know McCoy just isn’t that kind of in your face personality. But If you look at the Rams game last December, after Aaron Donald kind of hit Jameis late and he and Evans and ASJ were ready to square up, what did the defense do? They got b!tched up by Case Keenum. CASE KEENUM! I was livid after watching that. The defense has to get fired up, but it has to be genuine.

  10. Pickgrin Says:

    “what else could it be?”

Maybe Jameis suggested that after McCoy gets his 1st sack in Atlanta, that he reach out to help Ryan up off the turf – and then when he’s half way up, release dumping Matty Ice right back on his keister to help set the proper tone for the season.

  11. unbelievable Says:

    LOL PIckgrin.

  12. DB55 Says:

    Bucsfanman

I’m just gonna sit here eating my crow flavored popcorn and wait to see if you guys figure it out. What else could it be? Hmmm….

  13. Buc50 Says:

It really speaks to the kind of respect that these 2 guys have for each other. Jameis having the cajones to off something like that to a veteran and Gerald being humble enough to listen and heed in order to help the team win. I love it!!!

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- You’ve worn me out, you think he wants him to have more DAWG in him?!
    Ok, and……..

  15. Dave Pear Says:

He told Gmac that there would absolutely be NO laughing and cutting up in the locker room after a loss!

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

    @Pickgrin- LMAO!

  17. DB55 Says:

    Bucfan

I can’t use the proper language on this here corner of the interweb but I willing to bet yes “more dawg” and a lot less cat.

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

So the Face of the Franchise, told the old face of the franchise that now that he is the Leader of the team that he still needs the old leader to lead the defense, but he needs to be a better leader to lead the defense now!!!!

  19. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

My hunch is that this refers to GMC standing on the outside of the pregame huddles and not the inside. Or that may have been one of several issues Quarterback Jesus brought up during the discussion

  20. tmaxcon Says:

This is a classic case of a great leader making players around them better. Mccoy never made players around him better and that is why he is a good player versus an elite player.

  21. dooshlarue Says:

JW told GMC that if he wants to have real fun while playing in the NFL then he should try winning instead of just playing.

  22. Bob in Valrico Says:

Jameis is both a leader and cheerleader offering encouragement and direction
at times to teammates.my guess would be jameis would like to see a little of both from GMC.

  23. Pick6 Says:

i think it’s Gerald being as willing to offer a foot to the backside as he is to offer a pat on the back. Pointing out when guys were accountable for doing something and fail to come through for their teammates. I believe that Gerald is one of the most accountable and committed guys on the team, and it would mean a lot if he were more willing to hold others to his standard. Gerald’s way seems to have been to just be the best Gerald McCoy he can be and to set an example. He has faith that others will follow it but that faith hasn’t been rewarded in his pro career.

  24. Bob in Valrico Says:

    more important to me :
what does Db55 crow popcorn reference mean .Did I miss something?
    C,mon man enlighten me.

  25. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @D Rome
I wish I could edit my posts also.
And PiratiCuss wishes I could edit my punctuation.

  26. BigHogHaynes Says:

McCoy said we would see it, so let’s just wait for it and not speculate! Simple as that!

  27. LakeLandBuc Says:

All of this talk is nothing but talk, actions speak louder than words. I need to see some action before I even speculate on what was said between them. Talk is cheap, you have to walk that walk before you talk that talk. All of this talk is becoming annoying to my ears. 9-11-2016 is D-DAY for this team, it’s ALL or NOTHING.

  28. DB55 Says:

“I want a bunch of guys that are going to play hard-nosed, emotional football.” – Dirk Koetter

  29. DB55 Says:

All I know is Jameis said we gonna fix the mentality of this team in the offseason. A HC is already gone, the “leader” has gotten a talking to, let’s see what happens next. Lead, follow or get the F out of the way.

“I want a bunch of guys that are going to play hard-nosed, emotional football.” – Dirk Koetter

  30. DB55 Says:

    Bob

I’m being sarcastic. the gmc haters out there just got validation that gmc is not all-world like the fanboys make him out to be. You might want to check the article below so you can catch up.

  31. SO CAL BEAST Says:

This 1 is very easy in my opinion. Last year McCoy didn’t include himself in the pregame huddle, hype, breakdown. JW told McCoy lead by example and include yourself. I’m sure everyone remembers

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

Still top 10 DB55. I’m OK with him being persuaded to tap into his inner Dawg!

    Next: TOP 5!

  33. The Buc Realist Says:

I thought it meant that GMC93 wanted pop-corn but there were 2 guys in the kitchen, so he was “double-teamed” so he did not get any!!!!!

  34. DB55 Says:

    Bucfan

In 14 he was #1, in 15 he was top 5, in 16 he’s top ten. In 17 he’ll have the most beautiful smile in the NFL.

    ….there’s crow flakes, crow curry……

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

You were waiting in the weeds with that one Realist!

  36. Dreambig Says:

Sounds like Jameis making good on his off season promise to get everyone’s “Whys” aligned and in the right place. Paraphrasing James’s end of year press conference …. “We gonna get players … how? We gonna make um” How are you going to do it? “Me, being me”, “leader”, “quarterback”!

  37. Bob in Valrico Says:

@DB it did make more sense after read your link. hey ,whatever takes to make this team better.when I read the arcticle the thought occurred to me that
Jameis might be visiting some other players such as LVD.He may already have
a connection with KWAN since they were drafted together.

  38. ATrain Says:

    WINSTON just took over totally…

McCoy just got out on notice. Lose the Loser Mentality

  39. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Pickgrin..you need your own podcast..lol..that was funny as fook..

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

Sick of all the talk. Just WIN Bucs. Just..WIN!

  41. DallasBuc Says:

Maybe he asked McCoy to take the tutu off? Not a big ask I don’t think.

  42. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I know exactly what was said.

    “Have an attitude like Kwon.”

  43. chromolly Says:

Im ghey for Winston…how lucky are we fans? The guy is a mature Man amongst some imature men..Brighter days right around the corner starting in August!

  44. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Chromolly
    ????????????????????????????

    did you enjoy his barbecue????

  45. MadMax Says:

Yep. Pretty sure it includes GMC including himself in the pregame crowding up together instead of separating himself. I didnt like that. Also the smiling and acting happy after a loss….didnt like that. Thats cool GMC, that kind of change is good….looking forward to it!

  46. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Maybe he told GMac to take out MRyan and JJones, game 1, like Sapp in ’97!

  47. Hecticbuc Says:

I read all the comments and was surprised that not many tried to guess what Jamie’s said or how he said it. Well this is my guess Jamie’s is very smart and he wouldn’t go right at GMAC to tell him what to do or how to change his play on the field. He probably told him something like hey Gerald question player your favorite superhero is hulk right ? Hell yeah man I love hulk he is the best one of them !!! Yeah I love hulk as well man. One of the best things about the Hulk is when he is in a fight he is unstoppable its because of his anger and his emotions and honestly Gerald that’s what we need more from you on this team if we are going to take this to the next level man and that’s what I’m trying to do WIN!!!

I understand what you mean Jamies I’m not here to lose if you honestly think this what is required to make the team better as well as myself than I will do it say no more

Alright man so no more Bruce banner and hulk on the field at the same time anymore only HUlK smash right ? Yep no more BB on the field only off the field.

  48. Bryan Says:

All this dribble lately about McCoy and us d@mn haters. Hey Joe! Why no follow-up to the last game with the “getting their why’s right”. Don’t worry about it. Sounds like Jameis has you covered!

  50. Iamabuc Says:

All of this account to one thing. It seems GMC never wanted to be a leader, period. He just said it. The leadership crown was thrown at him by Barber. Soooo, when JW approaches him with the subject, of course he was all up for it. Now, GMC, you don’t have that responsability, so it’s time to play harder and stop the smiling. We love you to death, but let’s be real, you haven’t being totally what we drafted you for, a total force to be recon with in the trenches, in the huddle and in other players faces.
