Koetter Explains Receiver-Free Draft

May 1st, 2016
Leaning Roddy?

Leaning Roddy?

No wide receivers were drafted yesterday by Tampa Bay.

This is a passing league, after all, and the Bucs’ depth at the position is very shaky.

Joe will spare the re-hash of the heartburn caused by the Bucs’ wide receiver corps. Simply, it’s not good enough or deep enough right now. It would be a different story if Louis Murphy wasn’t coming off ACL surgery in November. But he can’t be counted on — and Kenny Bell (more career injuries than catches) is too much of a wild card.

Did the Bucs want to add a wide receiver yesterday. Dirk Koetter pulled no punches.

“I was listening when you were talking to Jason [Licht] and of course, we would have loved to add a wide receiver and we had some wide receivers sprinkled throughout our board,” Koetter said. “But you’ve got to remember, when you’re trying to stay true to your board, in the rounds where we had a wide receiver there it just didn’t work out.

I mean, there was some that were relatively close, there was a couple where it was within one or two picks and Jason would’ve had to make a call between, ‘Are we taking this guy or that guy?’ There was multiple wide receivers that we liked, but we can’t take a wide receiver – and in my brain, I’m seeing ‘WR’ – you can’t just take a ‘WR’ to say we added one. You’ve got to add one that you think is better than the guys we have and can help us based on where you’re picking and who else is available and you’re other needs.”

Yeah, the Bucs stayed true to their draft board. Hooray for the Best Available Mob! But that doesn’t change Tampa Bay’s need for wide receiver depth.

Joe keeps coming back to free agent Roddy White, who played all of last season and caught a higher percentage of balls to him than did Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans.

Koetter has called White the most competitive player he has ever coached, and White hasn’t hinted at retirement at all.

If White is willing to come to Tampa and be the team-first guy he’s known to be, then Joe is all in favor of letting White compete. What’s the worst that happens? Donteea Dye land on the practice squad? Joe sure can live with that.

Since the days of “Rowdy Rowdy Piper” may he RIP…I like guys named Roddy. 🙂

Go ahead and sign him. Virtually no downside with significant upside.

  2. That Guy Says:

No worries, Joes! They traded picks to take a kicker in the 2nd round!

You know which other teams have used a high draft pick to draft a kicker? The Raiders and the Lions, and we know how historically successful those teams have been.

  3. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sign Anquan Boldin !!!

  4. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Pllllzzzz no more donte Dye this season, I can’t figure out what the team see’s in this guy. He doesn’t do any thing good in particular and is 5 feet tall that drops alot of passes. It would be one thing if he was a decent return man. what’s to like?

Im praying Bell makes the impact were all hoping for. If not, we’re in trouble. I just can’t envision Jax or Murphy staying healthy all season.

Im,surprised they didn’t sign UDFA Mike Thomas from southern Mississippi, Monkens boy.

I wasn’t happy when i seen they released Andre Davis either, your telling me he couldn’t help this team out? I’ll take him over Dye and Humphries any day. he could play Murphys role just as well, if not better.

  5. d-roca Says:

That was a stunner to me that they didnt draft a receiver. N yeah if aguayos available in the third take him. Could have gotten a starting slot receiver with that 4th rounder. Dissapointing. I guess the think kenny bell will be good to go. We shall see

Yeah the Raiders have been to 4 superbowls and won 3. They took a Kicker early and played us in the superbowl 3 years later…

  7. That Guy Says:

“Yeah the Raiders have been to 4 superbowls and won 3. They took a Kicker early and played us in the superbowl 3 years later”

And they’ve been such a powerhouse ever since! Lions too!

  8. JabooBuc Says:

Some people are just stupid. We did not trade picks for a kicker. We traded a pick for a kicker. Also, for those that wanted a 3rd or 4th round WR or DT or whatever, please tell us which one was so great that they would be gauranteed to start for the Bucs. And, if so, why were they 3rd or 4th round picks?

  9. Dreambig Says:

Hopefully they find some WR help before the season starts.

I was just looking back through past drafts and was suprised at how bad Dominicks record really was. You have to add up all of this drafts back to 2010 to find 4 players who are still starting from Dominicks drafts.

  10. rayjay1122 Says:

    @JabooBuc

Nobody who is still crying in their fruit loops about drafting Aguayo will be able to give any detailed and reasonable explanations as to who would have been the savior with the 106th pick that we traded. They also are too foolish to realize that we would have picked him with the 74th pick had we not traded and IF he would have been there however with back to back 2nd round picks, I think the Patriots were eyeing him.

  11. Bigbucs1 Says:

Man – I don’t think this draft will be as good/impact as people think- keep saying in litch we trust- but we still ignored the defense – how come we didn’t draft on the defense like we did with the offense- two years in a row, all offense- we needed to make an impact, a statement and we didn’t – we made the system td that we would like to be like lions and raiders too!- I’m dying to be optimistic about this draft but to me it’s quiet hard this time around- dos we really have draft two corners when we have two probowlers? How about a safety or one of the plenty of DL THAT WERE THERE AT #3- time will tell but we will see how impact full Hargreaves can be without rush up front- remember McCoy is an injury away from missing a whole year again!

  12. Bigbucs1 Says:

Hargreaves in the first and the kicker in the second were the boggest mistakes of the next few years- mark my words, considering how the guys we could’ve reached for or drafted instead of them like Rankins!

  13. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Bucs got 5 starters in this draft. That makes it the best draft in Bucs history.

  14. That Guy Says:

“I think the Patriots were eyeing him.”

lol When have the Pats ever done anything that moronic?

  15. Scbucsfan Says:

I’m thinking trading up for a kicker will end up being a daily argument like the daily article on Glennon trades. Beat the topic over and over.

  16. BUC55 Says:

Joe I agree completely with your assessment of our current receiver group. It’s thin and needs more talent asap!

This was however not a good draft to get one. I was hoping one of the top wrs would fall to round 2 or we could trade up into the first for one. As it turned out we got Spence…..no wr would have been better than him!

In the later rounds (3-7) the remaining wrs just don’t stand out that much. The majority of productive impact receivers in the NFL are drafted in the first couple rounds. The wrs taken in the later rounds are not much different than the huge pool of UDFAs.

I believe Licht will find one or two before the season starts to improve our overall wr talent. In Licht I trust!!

  17. R.O. Says:

Believe it or not fellas… Barring injury there are not many open “starting” spots… No matter who we drafted they weren’t starting. LDE maybe… As Koetter said they needed to be better then what they had… Drafting now for 2-3 yrs down the road… Also we have a ton of FA’s next year.

  18. Mort Says:

The patriots also drafted a kicker relatively early in Ghostkowaki… I think they’re doing OK. He was taken in the 4th with nowhere near the résumé that Aguayo has.

Aguayo was not going to fall to us in the third. Period.

  19. BUC55 Says:

Bonzai – I agree, this was somewhere between a very good and very possibly one of our best drafts ever!!

  20. JabooBuc Says:

“That Guy” is truly that guy.

  21. Meatloph Says:

@that guy well, they drafted a long snapper this year so clearly they were looking to work on their special teams.

  22. Kalind Says:

Roddy, Anquan, Percy, James Jones, don’t care just grab one (or two) and lets out up some points.

  23. Kevin Says:

I guarantee our coaches are planning to keep our running backs and Te’s heavily involved in the passing game. More so than last year especially with the TE’s. So when you consider what it will look like with ASJ, Brate, and Kenny Bell and VJax coming back we have a lot of guys who can catch the ball and thats not including Evans, humphries or Murphy. Kenny Bell was always healthy in his career before the pros I really expect him and ASJ to be big, consistent contributors. We had worse needs at other positions

  24. Johnny Says:

why no love for Anquan Boldin? i’d much rather have him personally

  25. JabooBuc Says:

I mentioned this on an earlier thread but this was truly an odd draft in that it appears that there was a lot of mid round talent but not not much top round talent.

  26. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Bucs got 5 starters in this draft. That makes it the best draft in Bucs history.

Maybe down the line….but other than Aguayo, I don’t see a single day 1, or even season 1, starter in this group. Time will tell

  27. ATrain Says:

I think this was a great Draft…I think grabbing the Kicker in late 2 was bold but I believe he was gone by the end if the 2nd.

I hope out DT step up this year ..If they Do our Corners will have a field day…You see what happens to Cam when he gets serious pressure all game

  28. James Walker Says:

When the Raiders and Lions took kickers high (higher than the buc btw) THE RULES WERE DIFFERENT! PAT were on the 2 yard line. Moving the kick to the 15-yard line turned it from a 17-yard kick to a 33-yard kick. NFL PAT have gone from 99.3% to 94.2%. The last time PAT were that low was 1979.

Add to that the kick off rule change may actually INCREASE RETURNS, Jay Feely said “Every NFL kicker I talked to said he would change to a high, short kick to the goal line. It’s not hard to do at all. The hard part will be the amount of hang time. The BEST KICKERS will be able to get 4.4 to 4.6 hang time kicking it to the goal line.”

Since 2002, the most common margin of victory in the NFL has been 3 points with 418 games out of 2,668 games. This is equivalent to 15.67% of games finishing with a 3 point difference between the winner and loser at the end of the game.

And both those guys went on to have incredibly productive careers on some really badly managed teams.

Both proved to be excellent picks.

    —————————–
This is the dumbest thing people can possibly say to try to discredit the pick.
Kickers dont win or take teams to super bowls all by themselves. No 1 position does so this statement is utterly ignorant. Think harder next time. Assuming you know how to think properly of course.

  31. Bird Says:

Aguayo was a third round projection at around 100. Teams sitting at the end of 2nd round are cardinals/Carolina/patriots etc etc. those are teams that need a guy or two and yes potentially the most accurate kicker in college football history to put them over the top. So licht obviously moved ahead of 1st pick in third round to get him. GET over it people

  32. Cobraboy Says:

    CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

but other than Aguayo, I don’t see a single day 1, or even season 1, starter in this group. Time will tell

IMO NFL teams no longer consider 11 guys as “starters.” In fact the term “starter” is old hat today, no longer really applicable. The NFL has become a specialized situational game and this draft reflects it. On offense you have only 9 every-down starters: 1 QB, 1 RB, 5 OL and 2 WR. The other two are situational. I’d say most teams have, really, 16 “core” players on offense—“starters”—that determine the success of an offense: 1 QB, 6 OL, 2 RB, 1 FB/H, 2 TE, 4 WR. Koetters’ offense may use even more.

Defense is similar: 7 DL, 3 LB and 6 DB combine to make the core of that D: 16 “starters.” And we won’t even get into the developing “hybrid” players like DE/LB and LB/S. That is coming very soon.

And the kicking game is equally important and has defined “core” players that really don’t play on O or D but are critically important to the teams success.

In that regard I see Hargraves, Spence, Aguayo, Ryan (safety), and Bond contributing on Day 1 with Vitale right behind, ALL in positions of need for the Bucs.

I’m especially intrigued by Vitale. The guy’s measurables are through the roof! In many ways he reminds me of Alstott: big, strong and fast with some twitch. But a better blocker Day 1 (a big Alstott weakness) and superior receiver-and Alstott has a solid receiver. I can see many intriguing ways Koetter can use him. I’ve never been a big fan of the “H-back” because tight ends seem a little out of place in the backfield beyond blocking. But Vitale may be a “true” H-back, a real hybrid. I’m looking forward to some new, nifty wrinkles with this guy in an unleashed Koetter offense.

    Fun times ahead…

  33. Power Vapor Says:

I hope the Bucs use Noah Spence like the Giants used LT. Both 6-3. Spence 15 lbs more. Both explosive. Both great agility and mobility. Very strong for size. Can rush from LDE or RDe Check out his sports science clip.

  35. Guzzie Says:

The only thing that freaks me out a little is VH3 and Spence have the exact same problems physically, both are short and slow compared to elite caliber players at their positions, a 5’10 4.5 CB and a 6’2 252 lb 4.8 DE, the one thing both these players have that can’t be measured is heart and love for the game, but the thing that really concerns me is the picks right after our picks….VH3 is considered the No. 2 CB, next pick was No. 1 rated DT Rankins, Spence was questionably the No. 2-4 ranked DE/edge rusher, next pick the unquestioned No. 1 rated slot receiver and Bucs need, Sterling Shepherd, regardless what’s done is done, Rankins and Shepherd hope we made the right choice

  36. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Hargreaves, Spence and Aguayo are Day 1 starters.

Ryan Smith will convert to Safety and start by next year.

Caleb Benenoch will start at RT by mid season.

Dan Vitale may start by Day 1 after the Bucs see his skills and attitude.

Devante Bond has a good opportunitiy to play opposite L. David…if he takes advantage of it.

  37. MadMax Says:

could’ve had Mike Thomas instead of Bond…..just sayin

  38. rayjay1122 Says:

We needed a kicker so why not grab the best available? Here was last years stats and some of the misses cost us games. This year, making the playoffs may very well come down to 1 or 2 games which solid kicking may swing in our favor.

    FIELD GOALS EXTRA POINTS
    RK: 11 31 of 34 91.2%
    FGM: 29
    FGA: 40
    PCT: 72.5%
    20-29 YDS: 10-11
    30-39 YDS: 10-11
    40-49 YDS 4-9
    50+ YDS: 5-9

Some games were decided by the missed attempts. Also Aguayo is adept at good hang time and placing kickoffs inside the 5 yard line which shoudl help our defense, at least as long as kickoffs are still a part of the game.

  39. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Cobraboy

Vitale is the new brand of fullback…he is a merging of TE and Fullback…which is where the term “Superback” comes from.

I agree with you 100% about him.

If the roll of FBs had not diminished in recent years, I think he could have gone as early as Mike Alstott did.

  40. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    CobraBoy-

I think that all makes sense. I’ll admit I was disappointed with the VHIII pick, but adding Spence in round 2 eased my mind a little bit. I really wanted Sterling Shepard, but the guy went one pick after we took Spence…no way we could’ve taken him in that spot.

I’m a fan of the Aguayo pick for sure and I’m sick of people saying the Raiders haven’t won any Super Bowls so kickers aren’t that important. How many Super Bowl’s has JJ Watt and the Texans won? Guess having the Defensive Player of the Year doesn’t matter. How many did Calvin Johnson win? Guess having the best WR of his generation doesn’t matter.

PS – CobraBoy, good to see you man. Hope the DR is treating you well. Miss sparing with you on the TBBBB

  41. TvD Head ball coach Says:

First of all, everybody needs to chill out. We made our team significantly better through this draft. It’s not like we took a kicker in the first round. Not to mention the fact that we lost at least two games due to missed field goals. We now have the best kicker in college football history!!! We have one of the best corners in the draft who actually wanted to play in Tampa! We have one of the best rushers in the draft! And the 4th pick was actually a safty! Stop hating and let it play out. No team starts the season saying, what will we do if all our receivers get hurt? You play to win the game. Hello!

  42. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Sorry, CreamsicleBananaHammock was who I was addressing. lol

  43. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Frankly, I’m embarrassed I didn’t have Vitale on my wishlist.

  44. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    Bonzai-

No way that VHIII and Spence are day 1 starters. VHIII may start out as our nickel back…maybe. I suppose you could call that a starter but I wouldn’t.

Spence will be a pass rushing specialist to start his career. I bet he averages 15-20 snaps a game this year. Doesn’t mean I don’t think those guys will be impact players down the line, but expecting too much from them this year will just lead to frustration. It’s going to take time for those guys to develop

  45. Cobraboy Says:

    Guzzie Says:

The only thing that freaks me out a little is VH3 and Spence have the exact same problems physically, both are short and slow compared to elite caliber players at their positions

I disagree about Spence. No DE runs 40 yards on a play, so a 40 time is moot. What matters most is the “get off”, and there Spence is beyond elite as the video Power Vapor posted: 0.12 seconds vs. a track sprinter’s 0.14.

Additionally, Spence has a monster upper body & strength, a requirement when trying to blast past OT’s man-on-man.

That’s quicker than Rosie O’Donnell’s first twitch toward a plate of donuts…

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

20 undrafted free agents signed and no word here? Joe must be at church 😉

Kid scored 9 TDs in 2 games.

A nickel is a starter. Last year 53% of plays were with 5 DB’s on the field.

Fact is teams feasted on slants vs. the Buc’s passive nickel play last season.

I suspect that will come to a grinding stop under Mike Smith.

  49. That Guy Says:

“And both those guys went on to have incredibly productive careers on some really badly managed teams.”

The parallels are even deeper than I described.

  50. rayjay1122 Says:

I can’t change anyone’s mind anymore than they will change mine but I for one am satisfied with the draft. I wanted WR Sterling Shepherd who was grabbed right after Spence but we had too many needs to address them all in one draft. If our current wideouts can stay healthy and ME13 can remember how to catch, then we should be OK for this season. I would be fine with signing Roddy White too for a short low risk contract.

  51. Couch Fan Says:

The UDFAs signings arent official until Tomorrow I believe, thats most likely why he’s waiting.

I’d imagine there’d be a lot of whining if Joe posts names today that changed by tomorrow.

  52. Cobraboy Says:

I suspect Roddy White will sign somewhere after the first week of the season to avoid a large guaranteed contract, a weakness of the CBA-vets are penalized, when that clause was supposed to help them.

But I’d be OK if the Bucs signed him, if possible, before.

  53. K2 Says:

I think coach really respects Roddy and wasn’t going to put him on the team…then cut him. So, if he doesn’t find the right receiver he will probably add Roddy to the mix.

Even bad managers can make a few good decisions.

I love how Armchair Draft Gurus think they know more that an entire NFL scouting department that has spent millions in analysis to pick just 6-8 players.

I posted this in another article….

It’s painful for me to go to the past to illustrate my point….

Eight years Buc Draft selections 2nd & 3 rounds.
    2007 Sears, Piscitelli
    2008 Jackson
    2009 Miller
    2010 Price, Benn, Lewis
    2011 Bowers

Many of these were 2nd round picks……now, how do you compare the Aguayo pick which essentially was a 3rd round pick?

Stop this constant whining about that pick and focus on our overall potential draft success….a couple

  56. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A couple more drafts like this and we are set for a decade….

  57. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

A nickel is a starter. Last year 53% of plays were with 5 DB’s on the field.

That’s a fair point. I still don’t agree with taking a nickel corner at 11, but I can see why we did it.

I was kind of hoping for Rankins at that spot. A DL with Rankins, Spence, McCoy and Ayers would’ve taken our line from a huge weakness to a strength immediately.

But Licht, Koetter and Smith have forgotten more about football and the needs of this team than I know…I trust they know what they’re doing

  58. That Guy Says:

People around here were pretty excited about ol’ Sabby Picitelli, tho. He was gonna be the next John Lynch! lololol

  59. Guzzie Says:

I do really like our selections though, a top rated CB, DE, K, a ball hawking safety and excellent returner, durable athletic RT with 35 consecutive starts, and a do it all top rated FB, not much to complain about, that’s 6 potential starters, at the very least we upgraded K, CB, DE, and FB compared to what we currently have at those positions

Amen Nole!!!!!! Good to c ya man. What’s shakin’?

  72. SB with Jameis Says:

“Best Press Man Corner in the country”
Best Pure Cover Corner in the draft”
Best Man to Man Corner in the draft”
    …………….
Turn the page to Cream’s opinions and he is suddenly a Nickle corner that isn’t fit to play yet. SMH

  73. SB with Jameis Says:

Hey Nole, I need to ask you something. My best friend is a die hard Nole and he is questioning the Aguayo pick because in his opinion Aguayo is Great no doubt but chokes in the Biggest of moments. Is there truth to that? I watched 10 FSU games this yr and I don’t remember him choking but I’m not going to argue with my buddy cause he Eats, Sleeps, and Breathes Seminole football.

  74. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I agree with K2

Koetter wasn’t going to sign White then have to cut him if we drafted a WR….he is allowing him to test the market and may pick him up later. Koetter is a class act…..

  75. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

SB there are alot of adjectives associated with Roberto “choke in biggest moments” is a new one to me bro.

  76. SB with Jameis Says:

I mean the kid made 267 out of 276 Field goal attempts !!!!!
How could the only NINE misses all be in big moments. Maybe he is just focusing on one or two games.

  77. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Everyone entitled to their’s I suppose. Honestly we could argue about who will have biggest impact on next season from the entire draft class. Right now, I’d put my money on Roberto.

  78. bigbucs1 Says:

This site is full of freaking homers, left and right. Can anyone, with any seriousness sit here and tell me it was our corners fault (other than jenkins and jennings) or was it the scheme? If it was the scheme, like many say, why draft so many CBs in the first place? We already had at least 3 starting corners that would start over VH3 in any team. VH3 is not supposed to start this year if we go by some of you guys assessment on why we drafted him.
Our DTs are on the same page as the DBs, as to we have some, but some are leaving next year during FA. What we are STILL missing is the pass rush! I am so glad we got Spence and I am hoping he turns into a a sack machine. Anyways, This draft was supposed to be so DT heavy and we don’t even get one. Not ONE! we should’ve drafted at least 1 in the first three rounds.
Don’t get me going about Aguayo, we are the biggest clowns of this years draft because of that. Besides the homers here, no one else really looks at it as beneficial and I am a Florida State fan. Yes the guy was a great kicker in college, and I am aware of the games we lost last year because of kicking, But the team wouldn’t be in those situations if the defense was effective! It starts in the trenches folks, in the trenches! I don’t care if the patriots wanted aguayo, they can afford him because they are contenders years in, year out! We are still pieces away from any type of contention other then the bottom of the NFC South and we DRAFT A KICKER! Carolina didn’t need a DT, but they drafted one, why? Because it starts up front! Seattle went ahead and got themselves some good line. Does CINCY need another DT, no but guess what, the drafted them.
My point is that Mccoy needs help, and he is not getting it. He needs another explosive DT to really make this Dline go.
No one will admit it, but the bugs reached for aguayo and VH3 – instead of beefing up for the DLine – I hope I am wrong but don’t expect this guys to be that much of an impact this year, so you won’t be disappointed.

  79. Buc-Naked Says:

Go to walter – football for our undrafted free agent signings

  80. SB with Jameis Says:

Thanks Buc-Naked. Panthers signed Cash though who I really wanted

  81. Pa Privateer Says:

I love the idea of an H-back in our offense. Vitale can catch very well and that threat out of the backfield will hold an extra LB in place instead of blitzing. I watched his highlight video (grain of salt) and he runs well after the catch and can put a hurting on DBs. So in a way we actually did increase our passing game without drafting a WR. Yes, we still should be active for obtaining better WRs.

I really like LB Devante Bond. I think between Bond and Spence we could run a 3-4 Defense at times. Watching Bond’s highlights video shows he has talent to rush the passer and great speed.

I love the RT too. He may be our day 1 RT.

Safety Ryan Smith has great speed

I am excited to see how they shake out but the front office and coaching staff are doing a great job in drafting.

  82. Buccfan37 Says:

On the Vitale pick someone put up the youtube video of his highlights, wasn’t every play a pass to him, I think.

  83. Buc-Naked Says:

I tried to post the list on this thread; however, it would not allow me to post it…could be an issue with copying/pasting it. I did notice, that walterfootball adds a “link” to everything you copy on their site.

  84. rayjay1122 Says:

Sarcasm intended: After wasting moments of my life reading negativity that I will never get back, I conclude from that same reading that we suck! We have 53 players that suck. A terrible QB, Head Coach, GM and scouting department and are doomed for the next 5 years for giving up the 106th pick that would have been used for a backup player to get a horendous rookie Kicker who can’t kick. Does that about cover everything for you negative fans? Rolling my eyes at all of you!!!

  85. Buc-Naked Says:

I’m going through the highlights for each undrafted signee. The heartfelt story of “RB Peyton Barber” is touching. Got to root for a kid who’s mom is homeless due to the massive tuition expense! He wants to take care of her now! Motivation = Success! GO BUCS!!!!

  86. Buc-Naked Says:

LMBO!!!! @rayjay Sarcasm that works…that’s funny right there!

  87. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Someone mentioned this a bit but I wish to add…

One of the best parts of this draft is that we selected players who WANT to be Bucs. Remember Ghost Johnson. Despite the many millions we gave that unprofessional joke he never wanted to be here. His heart was in Cincinnati.
That is the very essence of a locker room cancer.

Let’s look at our newest Bucs and one we took last year.

First and foremost….#3…he WANTED to be here. He and his father have great memories of the old Bucs and Doug Williams. Of course #3 wanted to be the top pick but I honestly believe if Tennessee had selected first #3 would have still wanted to be a Buc.

Now we have hometown guy VHGIII who was desperate to be here..putting Tampa on his shoes for the combine. Hooray

We have Spence…#3’s bud from the Tropicana game..he comes #3 approved and Spence is mean hungry to embarrass everybody who doubted him!!! He WANTS to be a Buc!!!

Aguayo was as bad as VHGIII in his open and unabashed desire to be a Buc!!!

Our new DB from NCCU…Ryan Smith has a serious chip on his shoulder. He’s been doubted since high school when he wasn’t seriously recruited…doubted in this draft…this kid is MOTIVATED.

Some don’t seem to thing chemistry and the locker room do not count. Not me!

This is one of #3’s greatest selling points…and now we’re surrounding him with other “good” guys…at least good in the football sense. Any of them with baggage are simply guilty of youthful mistakes…there are no Lawrence Phillips or Sleazebag Incognitos nor any Talibs.

  88. Pirate n packerland Says:

What @rayay said. What a waste of time and energy to be so negative about a football team your not apart of. If you hate the Bucs don’t watch.

  89. CrustyCrab Says:

I’ve said this along Jameis likes Kenny Bell so I knew he was going to get a very good chance this season to prove his worth. Jason Licht was glowing about Bell last know they bring a hurt guy on the road every game and not believe in him.

  90. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ joe
the need to upgrade our recievers is real, but Roddy White put up very pedestrian numbers last year.you . Don’t see an upside to a receiver averaged only 31 yards per game last year.White averaged only 11.5 yards a catch.VJ and EVANS averaged at least than 16.3 yards per catch.

  91. Mike Johnson Says:

Please Buc fans..Cut it out and Knock it off!! Roddy White is done. You can stick a fork in him!! Why do you think ATL let him go? The man is a half step away from the surgeons and PT table. Let him ride off into the sunset..Please!

  92. Bigbucs1 Says:

I love football, and the team which is why I am upset with the damn draft not to please any of you peasants. The team is not going to sink over night but we did passed over opportunities to drastically improve the defense. Specially the Dline. VH3 and AGUAYO are the picks I am referring to, the other ones are ok for depth, maybe start someday. I hope those two work out how most of you are expecting because I’ll hate to see the increased rate of suicides in the years to come.
The team also failed to add speed to the offense – go figure!

This draft in conjunction with the first FA class makes me question litch a bit.

    ———————–

I agree with this…and Vitale immediately started posting on how he was hoping it would be the bucs that drafted him..he also posted like within minutes how he was going to make sure Tampa got another SB..

    4 starts for sure..possible a fifth…

Great draft..thank God we didn’t risk and got Aguayo..twitter had Colts, Saints and Pats wanting to draft Aguayo..

20 undrafted free agents signed and no word here? Joe must be at church 😉

    Joe doesn’t acknowledge UDFAs.

LB Luke Rhodes, William & Mary
… this guy should make it.

    @DemBoyzFomDazbay

I agree with you totally on that Mike Thomas comment. I’m currently a Senior at Southern Miss And I can oersonall y tell you the kid is a stud. I thought for sure he would be taken at least in the 3td. I think he did get drafted tho in the 6th I believe by the Rams? I could be wrong tho

Finally someone that is starting to make some sense around here . I agree 100 my man. Been trying to tell these folks this since the moment they announced VHIII and Aguayo.

  98. DaRealistBucFan Says:

There’s a reason why Roddy White is still a free agent. But Would I take him over Donteea dye? Definitely! I’d rather have Bouldin. He be our new version of Keenan Mcardell

    True.

It’s called the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  101. Rick in Ft. Myers Says:

Yeah and if we had listened to Joe and his merry band of wannabe GMs and Head Coaches on here, we would be waving good bye to Johnny Manziel (sic) and the #7 pick he would have represented in the 2014 draft. I’ll put my money on the wisdom of Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter, thank you very much. Maybe you guys should get lives, Joe included, because you’ll starve as NFL GMs and HCs.

  102. Rod Munch Says:

Rodney White looked terrible last season, he was slow and couldn’t get open. I’d rather we sign Andre Rison than him, I’m sure they both run the same 40.

  103. Bigbucs1 Says:

Now the Manziel pick was hilarious- I was at rayjay when fans booed at the Evans pick- I was fine with the Evans pick but wasn’t sure because I didn’t know who made who then- I knew for sure I didn’t want that arrogant SOB in town though, glad we made the right decision.

we should have taken a flyer on a german wr who is 6’4″ weighs over 230 lbs and runs a 4.4 40 rather tan a linebacker who was not even slated to be drafted but was considered a sign on after the draft.

  106. Deez nuts Says:

They will continue to try to explain away to the fan base how great they are at making football decisions in the offseason, yet during the season will never win more than 8 games. There is an institutional madness on display here that starts from the top down. Eternal Optimism. It doesn’t win games. And there are not a whole lot of Buccaneers fans left. Jameis Winston is the only reason to even pay attention to this team at all at this point, and if he continues to get punished behind that weak offensive line, he will not be playing long in the NFL.

  107. Deez nuts Says:

No I was for Mike Evans since the first time I saw him play. In fact, I was like, the Bucs need to draft this guy more than anyone in that draft. Also knew Glennon was better than Manziel. The last two drafts have been solid, but I do take exception with Donovan Smith being an OT. He’s not, he’s an OG at this point and may always be. They needed to draft an OT in the second round and could have traded up to get Spriggs.

  108. Cobraboy Says:

    Deez nuts Says:

And there are not a whole lot of Buccaneers fans left.

We call the defectors “casuals” and “bandwagoneers.”

There are plenty of real fans who support the Buccaneers.

You ARE aware Smith made the All-Rookie Team at LT, correct?

  109. mike10 Says:

Look I’ll be honest, they’re saying all the right things here… It’s better than that smoke and mirror bs where were made to feel stupid as the coaching staff tries to reinvent the wheel…

Not to mention, I like that FB coming out of the backfield.. He’s got great hands!
