Pick Influenced By America’s QB

April 28th, 2016
Bucs love his ego.

Bucs love his Jameis-like ego.

In a roundabout way, the selection of cornerback Vernon Hargreaves at No. 11 was fostered last April by the pick of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Yes, really.

One thing Joe has learned about Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is he wants a certain mindset in his players. He wants them to eat nails and have a passion to win so bad they’d rather walk on broken glass than lose.

That type of personality is personified by Jameis and Kwon Alexander, to name a couple.

The Licht theory was tested with the pick of Jameis. Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, in his press conference tonight to talk about Hargreaves, invoked the pick of Jameis last year, saying it influenced the selection of Hargreaves.

“We thought maybe Jameis was going to be a little too overconfident last year,” Koetter said. “But that can be a good thing and we think Vernon’s confidence will be an asset as well.

“Everybody [in the organization] was on board. I really like the kid’s confidence. I like his confidence a lot. I thought he was very articulate. I thought he had bright eyes. I thought he was eager to learn. I thought he had a short memory and at corner in the NFL, guys he is going to be covering, he is going to need to have a short memory. “

Koetter had a message for Bucs fans who rejoiced in the signing of cornerback Brent Grimes this winter: Hargreaves is Grimes.

“This guy reminds me a lot of Brent Grimes,” Koetter said. “That’s one of the things [Jason Licht] does is to do comparable players, and this guy has got excellent plant and drive. He is quick. He is tough. He can play off. He can play press. He can support the run. He can play on both sides, possibly inside at nickel. We will see when he gets here. I think it is a big win.”

If Hargreaves is close to the player Grimes is, that’s a win for the Bucs. A big win.

Why is it we had the highest pick in our division yet I feel like we got the 3rd best player? Rankins and Butler are going to be tough against twice a year for a long time. I sure hope VH3 turns out to be a special player if not we are going to regret it for a very long time.

  13. Danati Says:

We draft a non-shutdown CB at #11. Would any other team do that?

  14. SB with Jameis Says:

IF we get Billings or Ogbah in the Second people will Hail this draft.

This team is finally getting some attitude and swagger. Something this team has lacked since the golden days with Sapp, Brooks, Lynch and company. VH3 is a baller, he will provide us with plenty of turnovers and that’s one of the main reasons they drafted him. Our CB’s provided us a whopping 2 int last season. And one of those pics were from S.Moore who is no longer with us. That has to change.

He is a grimes in the making in wich he will he gone after one or two seasons at the max. The only corner that I have confidence in being here in a year or so is Banks. U don’t know what your gonna get from Verner so this was the right pick. Both Verner and Banks contract’so are up at the end of the year.

On top of it we got our guy plus ammunition to trade up in the second (hopefully) and grab either Ogbah or Spence. Now imagine that scenario. Licht would be considered a genius, and after last year there’s no reason to think otherwise. He knows what he’s doing, that’s what I’m not worried at all. A lot of u wanted the guys with the 9th pick, they just might get two for one if they play their cards right. Then hopefully some of u will quit your whinning.

    #welcome home VH3

    @danati

Uuummm the Giants took Apple ahead of VH3 and he’s a much more raw talent than VH3. VERNON can come in on day 1 and be a impactful player for us. I don’t know if you can say the same for Apple. I think Eli got drafted on his height more than his skillz. His skillset is not on VH3’s level. I’m willing to bet my savings that Hargreaves becomes a better corner than apple, and will have twice as many int’s than him. You can take that one to the bank.
