Mike Williams Returns To The NFL

Elite head coach comes calling

Mattress-in-the-yard, blade-in-the-thigh, stripper-pole-showcasing, Tampa-Bay-Times-persecuted Mike Williams, one of the greatest young receivers ever to wear Buccaneers colors, has a new team.

Williams, one of the greatest fourth-round picks in Buccaneers history, is a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Williams was out of football after Buffalo booted him midway through the 2014 season. He worked out for New England last month and turns 29 in May.

Joe always liked Williams — fun guy to talk to, always had the backs of his teammates, and clearly he put in a ton of work to record three strong seasons for Tampa Bay, 2010-2012 (193 catches and 23 touchdowns). They were no accident; in two of those years he was cast as a No. 1 receiver when he really was a No. 2.

Joe wishes Williams well.

It’s pretty rare for a wide receiver to emerge from the shadows and land on a playoff team.

Good for Mike. Even better if he emerges as more than a camp signing. Hopefully he gets another bite at the apple before he has to hang ’em up.

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

KC can have him. I wish him well but I do not miss him.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Good for Mike… glad he’s back. He’d be the second best receiver on bucs roster right now. bucs are going to be in a world of hurt if dye and murphy make the team…

  4. 813bucboi Says:

wish him well….just wished he would’ve matured sooner because the kid has talent…GO BUCS!!!

  5. Lunchbox Says:

Good for Mike. I wish he could’ve gotten his stuff straightened out in Tampa, but I wish him well nonetheless.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

“One of the greatest 4th rounders”?????

when did this happen? and if so, what does that say about all the other 4th rounders??? Or is it enough to be a dominik 4th rounder that makes you great???? Does Luke Stoker count as a double word score because he is 2 4th rounders from dominik!!!!!

He is just another “flyer” that dominik took that blew up in his face!!!!! again!!!!!

So we’re pretending that Williams did not have three excellent seasons. Ok. Carry on. Joe didn’t call the guy great, only that he was among the greatest fourth-rounders in team history. –Joe

  7. Lunchbox Says:

On a side note, I must admit I am curious to see if Kenny Bell can develop with Jameis throwing the ball and Koetter running the show. It could be interesting.

  8. DB55 Says:

    Joe

Who’s Storm Johnson and should I care?

  9. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Andy Reid could resurrect his career for sure. This should be a good fit for Mike, who is very lucky to get thus kind of second chance.

  10. HIRE JIMBO Says:

    @DB55
He is a rb from USF. Played with Blake Bortles. Was a Jax 6th or 7th round pick.
I kinda like him, good depth with Rainey gone.

  11. DB55 Says:

    Jimbo

    Does he return kicks?

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

I want to apologize!!! I looked at the numbers and you are correct, it was a good 3 year run!!! My memory was clouded by the Rah/Dom 3 year drug/alcohol party that made a manziel’s parties look like a 5 year old’s tea party

  13. Couch Fan Says:

I actually agree with Joe on this one. Sort of. I wouldnt say he had 3 excellent seasons but he did have a great rookie season along with 2 average to good seasons and 1 seaon mostly injured. He definately shown the flashes of why some thought he was worthy of a 1st round pick. In the end it didnt work out but he was very good for the most part.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

    @couch

2 of those years he was just 6 yards and 4 yards away from 1000 yards,, VJ83 and ME13 do that and people talk like they are the best duo in the NFL.

  15. James Walker Says:

He most definitely was the greatest football player in Bucs history to have a stripper pole in his living room!

  16. Tom Edrington Says:

    Camp body…..

  17. 813bucboi Says:

@hirejimbo….storm went to ucf….I agree with you tho…he would be good depth…GO BUCS!!!

  18. BamaBuc Says:

Seen the Storm Johnson signing. Has he ever played FB at all? Maybe worth a look.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Mike Williams is not a thug nor a horrible cancer on the team. But he was a loose cannon! Red flags everywhere from his messed up college career which is why he dropped to the 4th round.

All things considered he was worth the gamble IMHO because they did get three years of good production from him which is not really a waste of a 4th rounder. I’m just glad we didn’t take him any higher. Talented guy just a wild child.

I agree other posters who think Andy Reid will give MW his best shot at reviving his career and hopefully he has grown up by now.

  20. Rrsrq Says:

Great hands, great feet, just no speed, loved his time here in Tampa, wish it would’ve worked out for him, glad he is getting another chance, will never forget his first touchdown Fahrenheit he tipped the ball to himself and then got the feet in for the score.

  21. Waterboy Says:

I was surprised he didn’t get a call from the Bucs last season.

  22. Destinjohnny Says:

i thought it would be the mean machine team

  23. pick6 Says:

there was nothing particularly sinister about mike williams and the way he lived his life during his buc career; he was a wealthy young man enjoying his wealth and youth. unfortunately, you don’t have to be sinister to have your priorities wrong, and i think getting booted from Syracuse, Tampa, and Buffalo is evidence that the bucs were not the only ones to come to the conclusion that his priorities were definitely wrong

  24. JonBuc Says:

Add him next to the other 4th rounder with tons of promise: Tanard “Smoke ’em if ya got ’em” Jackson.

  25. SB with Jameis Says:

Glad for Mike everyone deserves a second, third, or fifth try. 🙂

  26. Kevin Says:

Bucs signed rb storm johnson. Was with jags last year little scat back

  27. SB with Jameis Says:

macabee just posted a picture perfect Bucs draft scenario over on another site. I wish you guys could see it.

  28. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Reading this thread brings up an interesting question.

i’m curious as to what expectations we have for our draft picks. Obviously we’d love all of them to be all pro but that’s not realistic. What is realistic?

I think a #1 has to play to GMC levels…and a #2 to LVD levels…but what about after that. I three good years worth it from a 4th round pick….I’m actually OK with that. Mike W was not a wasted pick nor was Tanard Jackson. Would have been nice if their personal issues hadn’t shortened their careers but while they did play they were good.

So what say ye guys? First rounder needs to be impact…2nd round hopefully but 4th round and beyond wouldn’t we be happy this year if we found somebody in the 4th who contributed as much as Mike Williams?

  29. Rrsrq Says:

    Storm Johnson
    High School All American
Started career at UM but couldn’t beat out Lamar Miller/Duke Johnson,
transferred to UCF and was solid, not spectacular
Kinda in the mode of Mike James, but MJ may be better

  30. SB with Jameis Says:

Actually SPBF I think that most of us know what ‘realistic’ is as fans. What has been ‘real’ in recent years is we are a losing team. Who knows what ‘realistic’ looks like other than losing anymore? I want to be optimistic with skepticism. I think this is the only way that I have been a Bucs fan for 40 years.

What I think that we should hope for is the Best ‘Rusher’ in this draft be it a DT or DE. I don’t give a rats behind about people in the ‘edge’ rusher only class. Pressure is pressure no matter where it comes from. And as for who we get in the later rounds I trust in Licht and Koetter and Jameis to do all they can to make those guys stars too. Hard to believe I just typed that last sentence.

  31. SB with Jameis Says:

    “don’t know what ‘realistic’ is

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Mike Williams was another one of those “work hard to get there” only to ruin it with immaturity.

I could care less for stupid people. Give me millions per year and I promise…I will have no issues with the law. I will stay out of bars. I will get in no fights. I will pop not pills or do any drugs.

I really don’t get how stupid some of these guys are. If you need to do all that stuff, do it after you retire so it doesn’t cost you a career.

  33. unbelievable Says:

I would disagree about Storm Johnson at UCF… He was actually an absolute beast when he played there.

He is a huge reason why Bortles was drafted so high. Who do you think took all the short screen passes to the house for touchdowns?

Storm Johnson and Ranell Hall were Bortles main weapons along with JJ Worton.

As for MW19, I wish him well and would love to see him actually come back and play.

  34. QBKilla Says:

Hopefully Mike has his life straightened out. I wish him well.

  35. Kevin Says:

I always liked Mike James, suprised he hasnt seen any action since breaking his ankle

  36. Dave Says:

Williams was damn good for a few years. Opposite ME he would be awesome!!
    I wish him well.
As for BuccanerBonzai claiming if he got paid millions he’d do everything perfect…. I’d like to think I would too. That is work out and eat right and handle the media well and not party too much etc…
But that is BS. Most everyone on here, as a 21 year old college grad being handed 100’s of thousands, if not millions, would be pretty oblivious to many things and probably party a little too much.
That is why I have no problem giving most these guys a second or third chance for dumb immature things. Beyond that, see ya.

  37. Phil Says:

Hope Mike does well. Anyone with a stripper pole in their living room is my hero.
