“Jameis Of The Defense”

April 27th, 2016
Wants his own title.

Wants his own title.

A few months ago, Joe was casually discussing various players with a high-ranking suit from One Buc Palace and Joe dropped the name of bone-cracking middle linebacker Kwon Alexander.

The suit’s eyes lit up and a big smile broke open and he said, “He’s the Jameis of the defense!”

The way the Bucs think of Jameis and his football passion and mentality and smarts, that is high praise. So Joe got a chance to talk to Kwon yesterday and asked him what he thought being referred to as the “Jameis of the defense.”

Kwon was, well, conflicted. He liked it but wants more.

“It makes me feel good but I don’t want to be known as the Jameis of the defense,” Kwon said. “I want to be called the ‘Kwon of the defense.’

“But I know what they mean by that. Jameis is a great leader. And I follow him too. He has taught me a lot of things.”

Joe can’t imagine what a quarterback can tell a linebacker, but one thing Jameis helped Kwon with, so the second-year LSU product said, was studying.

“He has taught me how to get into my playbook,” Kwon said.

Now Joe has heard of stories of how a quarterback can bond with a linebacker or another defender, but getting into the playbook with them, well, Joe has never heard of that before.

The more Joe sees these guys work, the second-year guys, and sees on social media how hungry they are to rid the Bucs of their losing ways and hang out away from One Buc Palace, this sure seems like one helluva special group.

Yeah lots of team bonding even since last year… The draft class from last year making waves. I hope we see even more periscope!

  2. Chris Says:

It reminds me of when Sapp and Brooks came in. Both players tired of being called the Yucs on tv. That’s jameis and kwon just one on each side of the ball instead of just defense. We had some good years after that

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Kown and Jameis are the two best things to happen to the bucs since Dungy was shown the door and Chucky hoisted the Lombardi… The future is bright as long as Kwon keeps his head on straight and stays out of the energy cooler.

This has got to be the most excitement for Bucs fans around the world in a long time. No matter where you are, you can feel the culture/environment changing in Tampa. I love it!!

No matter where I am in the country(Marine Life), I always try to make at least one game a year. Normally it’s the closest city to me. I’m in VA now so last year was Redskins game. I will travel to the Primetime Monday Night Game against the Panthers this year. Can’t Wait! Go Bucs

I dont think kwon meant they study together. I think he meant jameis taught him he needed to be in his playbook a lot period. I read a story where jameis was playing the panthers the first time and luke was calling out all of the bucs plays. Jameis was impressed that luke knew what the bucs were about to run time and time again. Jameis went up to kwon and asked him if he could do the same thing luke was doing to us and kwon said no. Jameis response was you should. Thats what kwon means when he says he showed him the importance of studing.

    @Tiny Tim

I think it is more likely somewhere in the middle.

But remember, Joe isn’t quoting Kwon from another interview by someone else. Joe asked him the question directly, and Kwon probably said a lot more than what Joe told us here.

So I see no reason to doubt it.

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I LOVE the influx of true leadership on this team. “Youngry” really is the word.

Kwon reminds me of a cross between Brooks and Sapp in his attitude. He doesn’t want to be the next so-and-so. He doesn’t want to be compared to another player.

He wants to become the gold standard.

    GenghisKwon for 2016!

I hope we get more guys like him and Winston in this draft.

    @Joe

Thank You. Your coverage of my favorite team truly keeps my spirit up.

I remember being in Afghanistan a couple years ago and i sh*t you not, each night before i went to sleep i read every article on here for the day. It helped ease my mind to pass out. You guys rock man, seriously!! So Thanks to you Joes and all of your entertaining fans and their comments.

    @ bucbozai

Thats simple. If they studied together, i am sure joe would have said it or kwon would have said it just like evans and winston talked about studying together. I am also sure that every player on that team sees how hard jameis works and study but i dont think he is studying with all 75 players. Not enough hours in a day.

  11. Tiny Tim Says:

Those players that see jameis study can learn to be in their playbooks due to jameis, but not study with him.

seems like we got some REAL leadership going on….wonder how gmc feels about this?….2 rookies coming in and becoming instant leaders….we haven’t seen, read or heard much from gmc since the end of the season…Winston has been seen working out with teammates…Winston has reportedly changed his body for the better….kwon has been engaged with teammates thru out the offseason….he has been seen working out and has been heard saying he wants to seek advice from the great db…evans seems like he is ready to focus…ayers has been mentioned…grimes has been mentioned…even lvd has talked about the new defense he’s learning….I just gmc isn’t salty and focuses more on team wins instead of trying to reach 10 sacks….GO BUCS!!!!

I bet Killa Kwon would love to rush behind Noah Spence…

  16. feelthepewterpower Says:

Wait, how were the Panthers able to call out all of our players. Either we were being too vanilla for a rookie qb and too predictive, or spygage part deux?!?!?!

  17. feelthepewterpower Says:

    Spygate, rather ^

  18. feelthepewterpower Says:

And plays, not player…wish there was an edit button.

  20. Capt. Tim Says:

Its hard to believe, just how great last years draft was!

Is Kwon an out of the park home run- or what?
And he isnt even the best guy we drafted!!

Amazing! Cant wait to see Licht in action, Starting tomorrow night!

MarineBuc- Thank you for your service! Its the land of the free, because its the home of the Brave!

  21. BigHogHaynes Says:

Same group of players from last year! Except for (GM’s) Free Agents!!

  22. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ feelthepower

Its called film study. Derrick brooks and ronde barber are classic examples of that. Those type of players pick up on tendencies from film study which causes them to play faster and always in the right spot. Trust me, luke is a great talent but he maximize his talent due to his preparation. Thats the point jameis was trying to get across to kwon. Thats probably one reason why kwon wants to get up with mr. Brooks.

  23. MarineBucsFan Says:

    Thanks fellahs!!
