It Was All About The Bucs

April 29th, 2016

New Bucs kicker Roberto Aguayo.

Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo wanted to kick in the NFL. That was his goal, and by his performance in college, he knew the NFL would come calling.

But he hoped to get a call from the Bucs. Aguayo shared this desire with Joe from the NFL Scouting Combine back in February.

“Tampa was probably my first team that I fell in love with growing up,” Aguayo told Joe. “My parents took us to one of the training camps at Walt Disney World at Wide World of Sports, and I met Matt Bryant, who was the Bucs’ kicker at the time. It was a pretty cool experience.”

Aguayo, as the second round began to tick away tonight, began to wonder if the Bucs were his destination. In fact, during his conference call with Bucs media tonight, he confessed he didn’t think it was going to happen.

Then his phone rang. He looked at the number and noticed it contained an “813” area code. His first thought, he said, was Tampa Bay.

It was, in fact, the Bucs, informing him he was selected by his favorite team.

“The Bucs were interested,” Aguayo said of chatting with Jason Licht at Florida State’s Pro Day. “And on my end, I was very interested!”

    Welcome to The Bucs!

  2. Mike Johnson Says:

If this kid kicks as good as he did in college? Watch out NFC South!

  3. Birdman Says:

Lichts good buddies in New England had two straight picks and missed a PAT on the AFC Championship. Also they traded out after our swipe… Jameis likes barely like having to cross the 50, and coaches like how Aguayo was perfect from NFL extra point range.

  4. R.O. Says:

Amazing how quick writers and fans turn on Jason Licht for this pick. All we did was give up the 4th from Chicago to get our 3rd pick early. Another starter and leading scorer on your team. Hopefully it works out…

  5. rayjay1122 Says:

Solid pick. Welcome to Tampa!!! Please win several games for us and shut the haters up. LOL

  6. jason Says:

I need a triple shot, my grade for my beloved bucs just went from and a “A” to an “F” !!! Now we just need a wr, s, lb depth, DT, another de, and a kick returner! Maybe now we’ll trade back up for another qb!

  7. buccfan305 Says:

With each DE that gets picked, I’m hating this kicker pick more amd more…..A F#@king kicker over a DE….SMFH!!!!

  8. BamaBuc Says:

Looks like we traded up again. Come on billings!!!! Loving this draft!!!

  9. BucsForYodaIs Says:

    Gobsmacked I be

  10. Buc1987 Says:

    I like Licht again.

  11. Bucnut2 Says:

He’s likely a better salesman than kicker. He sold licht on doing something really stupid

  12. BamaBuc Says:

Boo. Never mind. ESPN messed up. Sorry fellas!!

  13. Patrick in VA Says:

Love this whole draft so far. Getting Aguayo is going to have some folks upset because they’ll say it’s too high, but the points he’ll get us will make him well worth it.

  14. MadMax Says:

    Welcome to Tampa Roberto!!!

Yeah, Bellicheat was probably about to pick him with one of those back to back picks, and Licht swooped in and said NOPE! Just like we did with Marpet last year. What a beast that Licht is!!!!

Grand slam soon to come if we can get Pharoh Cooper, or if somehow Billings is still there (Im scratching my head as to why he still hasnt been selected).

  15. Aaron Says:

    Just Bad!

  16. Buc1987 Says:

BamaBuc…you had me hunting all over the place to find it. lol shame shame not nice.

  17. Bucnut2 Says:

Don’t buy the belicheck was going to take him hype. He’s too smart to draft him that high.

  18. MadMax Says:

We didnt trade up! Thats the KC pick we traded.

  19. Couch Fan Says:

So now people are whining not because we didnt draft a DE, because we did, but because we didnt draft as many as they wanted? LMAO. Buc fans never quit amusing me.

  21. pete Says:

Nobody hates the kid. People hate the fact that the Bucs value a kicker more highly than then 2 other position players that they sacrificed.

  22. The Real Drew Says:

I’ll continue to say it, I don’t love it because it’s a kicker in the second round. But, remember last year when we traded into the second round ahead of NE. How did that pick work out?

  23. BamaBuc Says:

Yeah sry 87. They didn’t change it on the ticker thought licht did it again. Wouldn’t surprise me. Lol. Can I get a mulligan?

  24. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I will bet anyone here a Roberto Aguayo jersey that Aguayo makes more pro-bowls than Vonn Bell

    Any takers?

  25. Eric Says:

Kickers are awfully fickle. One twitch and the kid could start pulling or pushing the damn things.

    Seems totally insane.

Hell the Noles would have won that championship with no kicker. Jameis lit everyone a new one.

I can’t even remember him making a game winning kick.

  26. R.O. Says:

You all are stupid.. How many games is a WR, S, DT going win you a year? Your K’s win or lose you 3-4 games per year.

  27. flmike Says:

Other than your QB the next highest scorer on your team is your K, plain and simple.

  28. Aaron Says:

I’ll take any player other then a kicker

  29. Greg Says:

    Aaron, you’re an idiot!

  30. JenaW Says:

Welcome Roberto! Happy to continue to watch you and your great leg!

  31. Big Rob Says:

    @Eric

Short memory. They won a lot of close games Jameis’ last year because of his leg.

  32. Stanglassman Says:

    Last Season:

Barth was 23-28 with a 82% Adj with a long of 53 yards.

Aguayo was 21 of 26 with a 80% Adj with a long of 51 yards. Kicking a larger NFL ball won’t make life easier either. Some kickers don’t transition well to the NFL, Brindza or it takes them a few years to adjust, Nugent.

I do think Aguayo is a slightly better kicker but the only knock on Barth was in previous years he had trouble kicking off through the end zone. Now with the rule change that isn’t as important. Barth always had good hang time and placement on his kickoffs. I’m a former walk on kicker at FSU and usually pointing out the importance of kickers to a team but in this case the Bucs clearly gave up too much for Roberto. I’ll be his biggest fan and am looking forward to meeting him.

    @ joe

BPA available regardless of position according to your board. I hope you are getting an understanding of how the draft works now.

  34. Chris Says:

If all three start and are effective, that will be 7 in 2 years. THAT IS IMPRESSIVE!

  35. old buc fan Says:

Well after reading the previous comments it DOES NOT make me feel any better this morning at all. I do not care where he comes from we just had too many greater needs and now not a chance in hell to address them. It blew my mind what we gave for him at that point. I immediately turned off the draft before I became sicker, what a waste of a great oppurtunity.

  36. 1sparkybuc Says:

The Bucs could be set at kicker for the next 20 years. I’m fine with that. It’s a better return on the investment than the likely 4 or 5 years we would get from 3rd and 4th round players at any other position. This was not a casual decision. Their jobs depend on making the best choice possible. I believe they did. The biggest problem last season was leadership and poor coaching. That’s been corrected. This team had talent last year. Lovie didn’t know how to make the best use of it. Mike Smith knows. The Bucs are going to have a balance of talent on offense and defense for the first time in franchise history. Bobby is going to be busy kicking a lot of extra points.

  37. old buc fan Says:

Just a small list of players we could have gotten instead of RA. He is a great kicker BUT::: DT: A. Washington, Javon Hargrave, Maliek Collins. DE:: Carl Nassib, Shilique Calhoun. OT Shon Coleman, LeRaven Clark. FS: Vonn Bell. RB Prosise. WR Braxton Miller, Leonte Caroo CB: Cyrus Jones, Daryl Worley. PLUS any of the first nine selected today. For these reasons I do not agree with the pick. Just too many needs.

  38. Tiny Tim Says:

News flash…..kicker was a need as well or maybe you guys missed last season.

  39. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Great Pick draft and Licht got better with Spence pick,

  40. Dano2200 Says:

Lest we forget we lost the first Carolina game last year due to missed FG’s? I understand the haters view of needs at S, DT, LB, but strong special teams are essential to a winning organization. RA brings incredible accuracy and confidence to the offense for the next 15+ years, he will earn every bit of this selection and then some. Go Bucs!
