Another Cornerback

April 30th, 2016

ryan smith

So the Bucs are loading up in the secondary, picking a cornerback for the second time with Ryan Smith of North Carolina Central, the second cornerback selected among their first four picks.

Joe will have more on this in a moment. Until then, watch Smith’s highlights.

I guess we plan to get QB pressure via corner blitzes.

  2. Jason Says:

Perhaps more importantly, he’s a very good kickoff returner too

  3. BirdDogger Says:

All of a sudden the CB position is crowded.

  4. Brent bull/buc Says:

I don’t know? I’m done watching draft really sucked for me this year. Disappointed.. Hope it works. Never heard of this guy. I wanted a dt or wr or s. Just sux.

  5. The Real Drew Says:

Heargraves is a great returner too, but being a first rounder would be limited use there.

  6. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Don’t think we needed a CB but this guy hustles

  7. mike10 Says:

…. well they’re sticking by their board

  8. Guzzie Says:

Good kick returner who cares they dont do kickoffs anymore he will never see the field who the hell is he better than grimes verner banks Vh3 maybe Robinson but we are paying him $2 million to sit on the bench too, we cut Verner, then cool if he’s any good then we can move on next year from grimes and verner, Licht seems to think we are a good team and don’t need to draft starters but developmental backups with upside, this isn’t NE we will fire you

  9. DaRealistBucFan Says:

Guzzie I think he’s trying tocgdt fired so he can collect the unemployment

  10. Couch Fan Says:

You do realize this is the 4th round right and finding starters isn’t exactly easy? Stop bitching just cuz they didnt draft who you wanted. Bunch of spoiled little brats on JBF. You would never know this was spose to be a fan site by how some of you comment like you were former GMs or something.

I’ve been saying this the past 2 months coach my scheme knew something was wrong in the secondary and this pick says that

  12. QBKilla Says:

    Should have taken a punter.

  13. Bobbybuc Says:

Just remember how bad our secondary was when everyone was throwing all over us

  14. PRBucFan Says:

Played safety for two years just converted to CB

  15. Mr. T Says:

He might be playing safety again

  16. Guzzie Says:

After better thought I’m good with this pick, Verner Grimes and Banks are probably done after this year making CB a big need, Banks plays well someone will pay big money, if not we won’t even try to resign him, plus Grimes age is just begging to get injured, really wanted a DT at this pick but I probably complained about some small unknown 4th round LB in last years draft, so what do I know, welcome to Tampa Ryan

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

Sounds like a special teams ace / depth pick. Which is the type of player you find in the 4th round. After 100 picks go by, it is not easy finding talented starters. Kwon was a diamond in the rough for sure.

With that said i find it hard that there wasnt a D lineman or S worthy of a shot with that pick. But if this kid can return punts then it is certainly a need and worth the pick. We shall see.

  18. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

There was plenty of starting caliber talent still on the board that actually fits our needs but instead we draft a 6th corner. One of our strongest positions. Hope he pans out and possibly converts to safety but now amused with the pick at all. Maybe in the 6th rnd but not the 4th were u still can find starters for your team.

  19. martinii Says:

Looks like return man and possible safety to me. Great speed, been climbing the ranks steadily.

  20. Tampa Tony Says:

Been telling the Joes and everyone good GM’s not analyst like Dom DONT draft based on needs those picks tend to be reaches and bust. Good teams and GMs like Thompson of GB who even Joe bows to take the best player available on THEIR board not some media members board.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Smith is 5’11″” and weighs 189 lbs. Safety? Really?

NFL.com draft analysis had this to say about his weaknesses:

Needs advanced instincts and to take coverage chances because closing burst is just marginal. Average long speed in the chase. Can be stacked and big-boyed on vertical routes creating difficulties playing the ball. Small hands at the end of his short arms. Acceleration from change of direction is below average. Skinny and will always be challenged by size. Ankle-biter as a tackler.

  22. TheCollegeBuc Says:

Fans need to understand that our edge rushers can’t be properly analyzed until we have a secondary that can cover receivers for longer than 1.75 seconds. strong secondary is key and will build foundation on D for years to come. Plus we already got one of the best talents at DE. What more could you ask for? Unless you honestly think that Skeleton Grimes, Robinson, and the Bench Brigade are all going to have pro bowl seasons then please sell me whatever drugs you have

  23. Architek Says:

Since some of you clowns hate the Bucs and their picks so much – why invest the time to come here and cry about things you can’t control.

Like it or not our GM knows what he’s doing and he’s completely responsible for the results. Until he fails miserably and consistently he will be the head of football operations.

GET USE TO IT OR LEAVE.

  24. "That guy" Says:

I have to applaud Jason licht, the man plays free agency and drafts like a pro.

  25. teacherman777 Says:

Got a chip on his shoulder.

Just the kind of player we need.

Happy we got a second CB to be an understudy to Brent Grimes.

Brent Grimes modeled his game after Ronde Barber. Even wore #20 for him.

I’m really happy we have Licht.

Dominik kept the team too young, without mentors and leaders.

    Vincent Jackson shapes the locker-room.

Logan Mankins changed our franchise for all time. His influence will live on with Ali, Donovan and Pamphlet. And now with our new tackle/guard project.

A Nigerian dreamer. I love Nigerian players. They are humble with heart.

    GO BUCS!!!
