Alterraun Verner On Notice

April 30th, 2016
Thin ice just got weaker.

Thin ice just got weaker.

Alterraun Verner, you better perform. Otherwise, you will no longer be in the Tampa Bay area. No more slack.

That’s what Joe read when Dick Vitale announced today’s fourth-round pick of the Bucs, cornerback Ryan Smith of North Carolina State. Verner: Get going. Now.

Verner is set to make $6.75 million this year, per Rotoworld.com. The former Pro Bowler regressed horribly under Coach My Scheme, so much so he found himself on the scout team on defense at one point last year.

Verner’s contract expires after the 2017 season. Since Coach My Scheme was banished to the cornfields of central Illinois, the Bucs have added four cornerbacks, including first round pick Vernon Hargreaves.

Johnthan Banks is a free agent after this season.

If Verner has a bad training camp and preseason, then he may be done in Tampa Bay. He’s actually lucky he was brought back.

Seriously can’t see hey Jude making the team. He was by far the worst CB last year and that’s saying a lot.

  2. buccfan305 Says:

I would go ahead and cut the cord now…why ever bring him to camp…if he gets hurt, we are paying him to sit on his a$$…

  3. Abdominal Snowman Says:

I mean great if Ryan Smith turns out to be a good player but I can’t help but feel disappointed. I really like banks and had high hopes for him but it almost seems as if we are preparing for his departure next year or sooner.

  4. Babaloo Says:

Looks like corner might be a strength now. We will see

    Called being proactive:

  6. DB55 Says:

Would have rather had Miles Killebrew

  7. BamaBuc Says:

Maybe we trade him? Never know

  8. Bird Says:

Have you seen pictures of hey Jude. Looks like the guy has been drinking his protein shakes. He looks like he is serious. Competition only a good thing so this position could be a strength. Plus they can cut Verner before season and save money. ( think he got signing bonus but not big bucks(

  9. Bird Says:

    Workout bonus

  10. Z-Bucs Fan Says:

I’m very confused by this draft. DL was clearly a weaker area than DB, which was terribly coached and misused, but Licht hasn’t really steered us wrong for 3 years now. I guess time will tell.

  11. Lou. Says:

What makes you say the d-line was misused? Cullen was respected, was retained after Lovie’s firing, and is employed now. (By the Ravens, IIRC). And Keith Millard before him was given props and is elsewhere employed.

The secondary OTOH was universally felt to be miscoached.

Just because something is new doesn’t have to mean the old was bad.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m sure there are good reasons why this pick was a surprise….both with the position and the player……nobody could have guessed this pick.
In time, we may find out why…..

My initial thought is special teams……this guy returns kicks…..we also may be moving him to S or moving Banks to S….

We are pressing the saying…”You can’t have too many CBs”

  13. That Guy Says:

How drunk do you think Licht is right now? As drunk as or way drunker than the rest of you?

  14. Kevin Says:

will be pissed beyond belief if banks just walks. We let all of our high picks go It blows my mind!!!!

  15. DaRealistBucFan Says:

Winning teams build front to back. Licht builds back to front. How much longer are we gonna have to keep enduring this idiot? I hope we start fresh in 2017.#FireLichtNow

  16. JayBucsBoi Says:

So Joe are you saying you don’t see the Bucs converting this dude to Safety? I think he’s our Return man as it stands, while they develop him at Safety.

  17. robert Says:

    bye bye banks

  18. Lion Says:

This is more of a special teams move at least for his rookie year. I see him potentially as the starting kick returner.

  19. JayBucsBoi Says:

And the fans seriously can’t be doubting Licht after the Grand Slam. Look at what’s happening ppl, who knew Kwon would be who he’s becoming for the D? THE leader on that side. Recognize real.

  20. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    Verner (A) just tweeted:

“Welcome to the squad Ryan Harris!!”

    Uhmmmm..it’s Smith not Harris…

Wonder if that was a jab to the new Buc…

  21. ndog Says:

Darealist what’s your deal? This team is one of the most talented young teams in the league and that is because of Jason Licht. Jameis, Marpet, D. Smith, Kwon, Evans, Hargraves, Spence, Agyuo and got LVD and McCoy retained for the future. What more do you want in 3 drafts?

  22. Miko Says:

    Verner and/or banks at safety?

  23. Joe Says:

DL was clearly a weaker area than DB

No way! Bucs had one of the worst secondaries in rcent NFL history (70 percent completion percentage opponents had!) and with three guys who may not even be with the Bucs in a year (Grimes, Banks and Verner).

The defensive line was missing one key piece (has for a decade): an edge rusher.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

I think this is more about Banks, I wonder if they might try to move him to safety. They just gave Verner like $2-mil of his salary a couple of weeks ago, don’t think they’d do that with the plan to get rid of him. Also relying on s couple of rookies CB would be stupid, rarely are they any good early on and this is a developmental pick.

  25. Mike Johnson Says:

I want far more production out of both Verner and Banks than we have gotten. We shall see if it was the coaching scheme as it has been suggested here. But I was never high on both of them after I witnessed their play last season. Its great there will be Bigtime competition in training Camp. It will all play its way out. Better play hard Banks and Verner. We are Watching!!

  26. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Extremely proactive, Joe. Influx of young corners will push the incumbents to perform better and they also provide a bit of leverage when I comes to resigning guys like Banks or Verner. Wonder where we’ll rank in the league as far as average player age.

  27. Kevin Says:

Im not concerned about banks and verner. Banks will actually play his first season in a defense coached by…ACTUAL COACHES!!!

Banks will earn a contract this year

  28. Rod Munch Says:

The new kid is a safety so it’s a moot point.
