Ronde talks draft

Bucs icon Ronde Barber makes a firm, detailed case for Tampa Bay to draft a cornerback. It’s all below in this video by FlavorOfTampaBay.com, the online home of former Bucs guard Ian Beckles.

And Barber insists that’s not just an old cornerback talking, as Barber claims he’s been on record for years pleading for the Bucs to fix the offense.

  1. 813bucboi Says:

Hargreaves please!!!!!we can find a first round talent at de or dt in the second round…GO BUCS!!!

  2. Pickgrin Says:

How old is this interview? Sounds like it was before the start of free agency from a couple of the things he said.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Rhonde Barber is my favorite player from the Old time Bucs!!!!!

  4. DB55 Says:

With the additions of Grimes and Robinson do the Bucs really need to draft a CB? If yes, do you use the #9 pick to do so? I say no.

I say you go WR or DE @9 with a safety in the 2nd rnd and more WR, DL, DE n OL in the 3rd and beyond. We have 2 sixth rnd picks this year.

As for Glennon, take no less than a first rnd pick, he’s better than Keenum, Sanchez, Osweiller so there’s definitely some added value considering the market.

  5. Mitch Says:

    The buc realist- Ronde*

  6. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Maybe so just not wit the 9th overall. Koetter said yesterday “he has big hopes for Banks this season”. To me I interpret that as a cb might not even be on the radar for this years draft.

  7. SOEbuc Says:

That pick 6 against the Eagles was one of the happiest moments of my life. Thank you Ronde. VH3 (even though i hate the gators) or Shaq Lawson (even though we have bad Clemson DE history)

  8. DB55 Says:

I’d even bring back Sterling Moore if we need more CBs. There’s nothing about Hargraves that screams – you must get this kid- I’d rather trade up for Ramsey.

  9. Lord Says:

I’d be fine with drafting 0 cornerbacks personally. We have 2 that have been probowlers; a young 2nd rounder with promise; and couple ok backups. I’d like to see what they do with good coaching.

Would rather go S than CB. Conte is ok but not amazing and gets injured a lot and Mcdougald is no sure thing

DE/DT is where I’d like the top picks to go. I’d probably even prefer WR or O line over CB

  10. 813bucboi Says:

@db55…with grimes and robinson we absolutely need to draft a cb(Hargreaves) @#9 if he’s available…grimes 2 year contact 33years old and robinson 1 year with a history of injury…banks will be a FA after this year and who know what verner we will be getting…if vhg is gone by #9 then I say try to get William Jackson in the second but I think cb is a bigger need than de…we do have some young talent at de with ghloston h.jones and j.smith…the cb situation is very murky…if available at #9 vhg could be the next barber in terms of longevity and hopefully slightly better production…

@nole…don’t be so sure…he said the same thing about k.pamphile a few weeks ago and then turned around and signed sweezy…GO BUCS!!!

  11. 813bucboi Says:

@db55…trading up to #2 for ramsey would cost the farm…we need every singal pick we can get…I personally think he’s going #1…he is from Nashville and they do need secondary help…to be honest I feel the same way about ramsey as you do with vhg…I really see nothing special…he is a freak athlete but the only thing he has over vhg is height…both can play two positions in the secondary cb,s and cb,slot…both can return kicks and punts(I havent seen ramsey do it,maybe he did)…my uncle is a diehard fsu fan and we talk about the 2 all the time…ramsey’s more athletic and vhg has better technique…the question becomes who would you rather have: a versatile player like tyrann matheiu(plays some cb, mostly fs and ss and can return punts) or someone like pat p(shutdown cb1, returns punts)…(for the record I would be satisfied with either one)…GO BUCS!!!

  12. 813bucboi Says:

@lord…safety isn’t as important if you have elite cb’s….ask Denver…ward is good but chris harris, roby and talib are elite and gives them a chance to win every week…de and cb go hand in hand…GO BUCS!!!

  13. Espo Says:

Lovie tried to hire Ronde as our assistant to Nickel coach Marmie and sometimes Dime back coach. This would’ve put us somewhere near 19 db coaches if you count Lovie’s niece’s neighbor’s boyfriend.

  14. Espo Says:

And for Buc sake his name is R-O-N-D-E!

  15. Espo Says:

We’ve just signed a pro bowl CB, just after signing another pro bowl CB. Our own 2nd round draft pick won the Jim Thorpe award and has looked very good when Lovie wasn’t here. We just signed a burner from the Vikings. Draft a CB sure but for the love of Simeon Rice let’s get a pass rush first.

  16. unbelievable Says:

DE is way bigger need than CB. Not saying it has to be our 1st round pick but is undeniably a bigger need. Wtf are you smoking?

  17. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Hargreaves..period…and this kid WANTS to play here..813 and Tampa written all over his gear..has mentioned he wants to be here..has mentioned Grimes is the one person he models after..and maybe that’s why the bucs got Grimes? Sort of a mentor? And he’s got the fire in the belly..

And anyone that saids they are not impressed with VH3..must not have seen him at the combines and playing…I’ve been watching him since high school..

Look who use to babysit him while his dad was coaching? Look who he use to hang around with..

I will be utterly disappointed if he is not made a Buc..and that’s all I am going to say..lol…

  18. DB55 Says:

    813buc

All good points but my spidy sense tells me hargraves is a wasted pick. And my spidy sense be on point.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

Been on this site for nearly 3 years now and Realist ALWAYS puts that H in there.

    Singin’ :

Help me Rhonde, help help me Rhonde…..

As far as Hargreaves is concerned. I think someone made a good point the other day about him when they said anytime the Gators played anyone decent Hargreaves sucked. Not sure if it’s true as me being a Nole WON’T watch the Gators play at all. Remember Kelvin B(Panthers) torching him though when they played FSU. So if what that poster says is true then just go DE. Damn it just fix the DL once and for all. Stop bouncing around the biggest issue on this team.

  20. Big Marlon B Says:

For the first time ever, I agree with most of you. Verner and Banks will be much better in (any) new system, Grimes may be old but he’s a gamer. Depth is always good but these guys can be productive.

I just can’t understand why most people aren’t placing enough on an emphasis on the need for safety help. I like Conte, but he gets hurt a lot because of his reckless style. McDougald doesn’t really do much for me. Tandy is nice for depth and special teams, but I don’t see him as a full time starter. And Major Wright is absolute hot garbage. There are a lot of talented safeties in the 2nd round and beyond. Karl Joseph, Darian Thompson, Miles Killebrew, Keanu Neal, Vonn Bell, Jeremy Cash, Tyvis Powell.

I’ve been thinking more and more lately that if Ronnie Stanley falls to #9, he needs to be the pick. DE, S, CB all have decent depth through the middle rounds. Make a beastly O line as he would likely be BPA, and then draft more for need later.

  21. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Big Marlon if Stanley falls to 9 make no mistake he will be the pick.

  22. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

It appears to me the gaytor fan,I meant gator fans round here have they’re fingers cross for vh3 not because it is a necesary pick but more so to have someone from they’re beloved team to rep for. I agree with DB55 that would simply be wasted pick. Listen to 87 and stop skirtting around this team’s biggest need. D d@$! line.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    It’s all about Trench Warfare.
All the rest – is just window dressing.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

@1987…”I think someone made a good point the other day about him when they said anytime the Gators played anyone decent Hargreaves sucked”… not true at all…the same could be said about ramsey but fsu never plays anyone except for uf…he shut down odell, j.landry, l.treadwell, r.green(fsu)…Hargreaves was a 18year old true freshman….k.benjiman was a 22 year old redshirt soph…not to mention a first round pick…GO BUCS!!!

  25. Buc1987 Says:

LUV….you’re 1000% right. Some peeps have no idea.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    @db55…LOL……

@nole…we gatorfans just see an elite cb that this team really needs…we’ve watched him for 3years…just like fsu fans were beating down the drum for Winston…once Winston hit the field and produced all the fsu fans said see told you so….Winston wasn’t perfect at fsu…his biggest concerns were off field issues and int’s….I do remember him throwing 4 ints vs. uf, so he aint perfect…as a rookie he had his ups and downs but was great for this franchise…Hargreaves can provide the exact same type of production, play making ability and leadership…

with that said if Stanley in there at #9, we have to take him…first priority is protecting the qb and run the ball..2 things Stanley is good at….GO BUCS!!!

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    813bucboi

I appreciate the fact that your a passionate fan bruddah. But I just don’t see it in this kid. I don’t even see him on the same level as DeAngelo Hall – when he came out of VaTech. He a solid corner don’t get me wrong – But top 10 worthy? Nah bruh

  28. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Buc1987

I respect everyone’s opinion bruddah. Just remembering how many times we’ve been down this road in the past. We never truly protected our former Franchise Quarterbacks.

    • Doug Williams
    • Steve Young
    • Vinny Testaverde
    • Trent Dilfer

Only to see them win with better protection elsewhere.

It’s almost like we’re chasing our own tails – every time we come to the crossroads – don’t know which way to go. Successful franchises always make sure the fortify the Offensive & defensive lines. Why? Because we’re this game is played

So If a Blue Chip prospect is there draft’em. If not trade back – fill out the depth chart with grade A talent.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

    Luv…good call.

Now I’m at BPA as long as it’s on the lines.

Does that make sense to everyone else?

BPA at #9 if it’s DL or OL. If not trade down (won’t happen) and fortify the lines with more quality rookies on the lines.

I’m not against drafting O-line at 9 too if it’s there, but let’s just fix the damn D-line once and for all or atleast start working on it.

  30. DB55 Says:

    LUV

Watch Glennon BLOW UP behind Denvers oline. You’ll think he is Manning reincarnated. #truestory

    813
    L. Treadwell scuffs at the notion that hg3 owned him. Treadwell said he was not impressed. And out of curiosity, of the 4 ints how many did hg3 have?

    87
Julio Jones, Benjamin, funchess, are lmao right now begging for the chance to go up against two 5’2″ CBs. oh wait hg3 should be able to cover Brandon Cooks so there’s that.

  31. DB55 Says:

Well if we’re going DL at 9 I want A’Shawn -I’m a grown ass man lookin like somebody’s grandfather out here – Robinson. I think this guy hit puberty in 1st grade.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

Buckner or Bosa if they fall!

I’d even pass on Ramsey should all three be there at 9 (won’t ever happen I know) over either one that’s how bad I want this team to start working on the D-line.

I know this draft is deep with DL, so let’s go get them in abundance. Load up on them in ONE draft until we get it right.

Yes they have many needs, but fix ONE thing at a time.

So anyone that keeps saying get a safety, a CB, a WR or whatever need to let it go. Keep coming at us with it all and I’ll keep saying one thing.

My name is NO, my sign is NO, my number is NO
You need to let it go, you need to let it go
    Need to let it go
Down to the I, to the No No No
My name is NO, my sign is NO, my number is NO
You need to let it go, you need to let it go
    Need to let it go
Down to the I, to the No No No

Let it go….. fix the line.

  33. DB55 Says:

Ok Elsa but I think we did that once before with bowers, price and ??? But it didn’t exactly work so why not get BPA? Which in this case will be a WR or DE.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

Bowers doesn’t count he cam in hurt and should never have been drafted.

If this draft is loaded with DL talent then go get them.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

    Lines DB. Think lines.

Great lines on both sides of the ball can make everything behind them better.

    Fix the DL.

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    DB55

Man I’ve got Madd LUV for the kid. Wish him the best.

  37. DB55 Says:

    87

I feel you bro, in theory you’re absolutely right it’s the execution part that scares me.

    Luv

I hate to see him traded.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

DB…if Buckner is gone (I’m a Buckner guy) and A’shawn Robinson is the BPA for DL then go get him. He flies off the ball pretty quick for a big guy.

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

DE guys. We gotta find a good’en. I do hope one is there at no 9. Grimes is gonna play hard. Its the rest of the secondary I’m concerned with. I’m not gonna knock our Bucs if they go secondary at no 9 though. Just seems with that pass rush upfront, we make it a lot easier for our safeties and CB’s. There will be quality Secondary guys in the 2nd and third rds. Not so for DE’s though.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

We had Revis and Talib… now we have Verneer and Banks. Anywho get your DE in the 1st round and get a corner in the 2nd as you can almost always find starting corners in the 2nd while finding starting DE in the 2nd is much less of a sure thing.

  41. godzilla13 Says:

We don’t need anymore 5-10 cornerbacks. Hargreaves height is an obvious concern but what happened in the two last games at the end of the year against Michigan and Alabama? There are also concerns with his recovery speed (4.50)? Brent Grimes, Josh Robinson and Alterraun Verner are all 5-10. Jude Adjei-Barimah is 5-11. Johnthan Banks is 6-2 but is slow by NFL standards (4.61 combine). Banks did post a promising 3 cone drill time (6.97) and broad jump (10.5). 40 time, 3-cone drill and Broad Jump are the three drills that are used to judge the best potential in cornerbacks. Based on history, you want your corners to post a time of 4.5 or under, 3-cone drill that requires lots of change of direction, covering slant routes, out routes, fly routes and so forth. Guys who run the drill in under 7.10 are considered good. In the Broad Jump about 72 percent of starting cornerbacks in the league averaged a broad jump of 10-foot-2 or more. If we do draft a CB the choice should be Eli Apple, William Jackson or Xavien Howard. I agree that we should focus on our defensive line and a playmaker at WR this year in the draft.

  42. 813bucboi Says:

@db55…of course he scoffed at vhg…if you were the #1 wr prospect would you admit being shut down by (so they say) the #2 cb prospect…I think not…he did say j.tabor give him the hardest time in his career…and that was uf’s cb2….sterling moore did a decent job vs. julio…but really name a cb besides revis(who’s 5’11) that can shut down julio…maybe pat p and Sherman but i still like julio over them…plus vhg will have m.evans to go up against in practice and figure out what works best defending taller wr’s…if we pass on vhg for anyone else than Stanley,we will regret it deeply…the height thing is overrated…now people are just nip picking…players like j.haden, b.roby, r.darby, d.revis c.harris and plenty others have had great success…no reason vhg cant be just as good…GO BUCS!!!

  43. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

If we do take a cb Godzilla I’m wit you and my belief is that it should be Will Jackson3. He’s long, agile, athletic and stupid fast. Duke rip the combine, only reason he’s not the highest corner is because he didn’t attend a prominent sec school.

  44. 813bucboi Says:

@godzilla13…really?….out of 30+ games you question 2….sounds like he was great at least 95% of the time…the 40 time is blown out of portion too…we all know that 40times don’t necessarily translate to game time speed…players that run 4.3’s look like they run 4.6’s in the live games and players that run 4.6’s look like they run 4.4’s in the game…just ask pittsburg and dri archer…kid ran a 4.2 at the combine…now he’s out of the league…Justin gilbert ran a 4.3, is 6’0 and went 8th overall…who?…exactly…measurable don’t always translate…its what between the ears and in the crest that count…Winston is a prime example…GO BUCS!!!

  45. DB55 Says:

  51. Clw JB Says:

definitely do not need to spend the 9th pick on a CB – no way, no how…with the top 4 CB’s we have, we are set for now, maybe next year in round 2 or 3…why pay Grimes and sign Robinson and keep Banks/Verner, then spend the 9th overall on a CB?????? No f-ing way…

  53. godzilla13 Says:

813bucboi Says – “out of 30+ games you question 2?” My main point was with Hargreaves height. Some players can play through it some can not. In both of the last two bowl games it looked like he was getting beat by taller receivers and had trouble recovering at times. I like Hargreaves, I just think it is in our best interest to draft a taller CB because we have so many short ones now. I agree with Clw JB that we would not have invested in our CB if we plan on drafting one at nine. A’shawn Robinson is a run defending DT. Pass rush moves are non-existent, no hand swat, spin, grip/rip, swim, anything. Even when he does generate a push, Robinson runs out of steam after a step or two. The Buvccaneers held a private workout on Baylors Pro Day with NT Andrew Billings. I would be blown away if we draft him in the first round. Then move up in the second to get Kevin Dodd. Bottom line we need a DE in round one or two. DT in one through four.
