Applauding Bucs Moves

Receiving kudos from a respected scribe.

No, the Bucs did not land the next Reggie White in free agency. No, they did not bolster their receiving corps, which needs fresh blood.

But other than that, it seems the Bucs have done alright for themselves in free agency.

That’s the word from good guy Peter Schrager of FOX Sports. One of the most plugged-in NFL writers, Schrager looks at the moves (and non-moves) of Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and nods approval.

@PSchrags: Sign Ayers, Smith, Grimes, Sweezy … Bring back Martin and Conte… Hold on to Glennon… Good little off season in Tampa Bay thus far.

And really, free agency really isn’t finished. It’s now a buyer’s market. Guys still holding their hats in their hands looking for work have no leverage.

Also keep in mind that two of the better starters the Bucs had last year, Joe Hawley and Gosder Cherilus, weren’t signed until after training camp began.

Oh, and there is this thing in a month called the draft.

I agree with the good guy. I like licht. Seems to learn from his mistakes and improve

Honestly, Licht could have an off year drafting this year and is still be happy to have him as our gm. I like the way this guy approaches the job and builds a team. When the Bucs return to prominence, it’ll be Licht’s team, not Koetter or whoever the coach is at that time. He’s the architect that’s building this thing and I’m liking the groundwork that’s being laid.

I think he has done well and obviously has been outstanding in the draft.
I love his philosophy of drafting with a strong emphasis on production(which is one of the reasons I can not see them selecting Leonard Floyd in the first round).

Love what has been done so far as well, but as a long time bucs fan i know not to get too hyped about the offseason. This won’t be the first time we had some good pick ups during FA period, hopefully unlike other seasons these guys pan out and don’t come to Tampa to enjoy the weather and get paid for taking a season off. Here’s to hoping this is THE turn around season! GO BUCS

I think the Bucs will do something in the are of WR, but I think they know more about Kenny Bell and what he will likely contribute in the offense, if there is a receiver working with Jameis, gotta believe Afrothunder is right there. Dirk has a plan for this young man and I hope we see what we saw out of Charles Sims, they could’ve have tried to hide him on the practice squad besides a injury that was healed likely by week two.

This is the problem around Bucs world a good slap on the back in the off season doesn’t mean anything to me win in the regular season.

  7. Guzzie Says:

I bashed licht the first couple of days of free agency, a lot of us did, I’m now a true believer in licht, plus one on that band wagon, now blow us all away, really fuel our fires, and pick up S Reggie Nelson, imagine defensive rookies coming in and learning from grimes Nelson and ayers for a couple of years, that’d be invaluable experience and bolster our return game and bring Percy Harvin back to Florida, minimal risk huge potential, even if he only returns kicks he’s a game changer

  8. Guzzie Says:

Forgot to add Daryl Smith as another veteran signing that can mentor our young LB corps and be a solid contributor

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m feelin ya there CrustyCrab! What I’ve been sayin since they put together this new regime. Its like..praising a new car you’ve never driven. It looks good, makes you feel good..until it breaks down on you when you are driving it!! Put the product on the field. Win some games. Get us to the playoffs. Then I’ll sing ye praises. Until then? You’d better get to work. You’ve done absolutely nothing yet. We want to see the WIN column. That’s all. WIN BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!

cant really applaud any of the signing except for sweezy…everyone else is a band aid…don’t get me wrong grimes, smith and ayers are decent players nothing special but realistically their all band aids…same thing the last coaching staff tried to do…only time will tell…GO BUCS!!!

All the FA signings are going to help this club. We still need a HB and have very little depth in some positions. We are fortunate we were able to sign one of the most sought after players in Sweezy and one of the few DE left in Ayers. Brent Grimes also had several teams after him and we were able to sign him. I still would like to see us sign one or two more players. Next is the draft. I have looked at every mock draft, scouting report and game film one can imagine and I find myself changing the positions selected in each round. It shows just how important each pick is going to be for this team.
