“His Ass Was Enormous”

February 9th, 2016

A Giants legend compares Doug Martin to another Giants legend.

So what makes Doug Martin so great?

A guy who had six 1,000-yard rushing seasons and averaged a stunning 4.7 yards per carry though his career answered that question last week.

Joe’s talking about Tiki Barber. He and Martin chatted on CBS Sports Radio last week and Barber broke down what separates Martin.

“It’s balance, man. It’s going through contact,” Barber said. “It’s the hardest thing for running backs to understand is when you go through contact, it’s not, ‘I’m conceding to get tackled.’ Because a lot of guys do that. ‘Alright, I’m done.’ It’s picking a side, like picking an angle. When I got good and I got strong, it was, ‘I know you’re going to try to tackle me, but I’m going to take your shoulder.’ If I can get through your shoulder so you’re one-handing me, I’m running through that tackle.

“And a lot of it’s because of your build. You’re like the old school. You know what I mean. There was a couple of guys back in the day, like Joe Morris was this way. His thighs were enormous. His ass was enormous. And that’s how you are.”

Martin, perhaps troubled by the giant ass comment, quickly added that running with a low center of gravity is key.

For those too young to remember, Joe Morris was a star running back for the Giants in the 1980s. The guy was 5-7, 195 pounds, but ran plenty between the tackles.

Barber also went on to compare Martin to three-time Pro Bowler Maurice Jones-Drew.

So will Martin return to the Bucs in 2016? If the Bucs and Martin can’t strike a deal this month, the deadline to slap the franchise tag on Martin is March 1.

    Now that’s funny.

I’d compare him to Dave Meggett but it’s all the same I guess. A couple of FA I’d like to see the Bucs look at:

    Chris Ivory
    Alfred Morris
    Robert Turbin (FB)

Well it’s one thing to have a giant asss it’s another to be a giant asss.

I have the first and have been accused of the second.

Credibility alert! Dave Meggett was a tiny little scat back known more for 3rd down receiving and returns than running through tackles. Thanks for playing but no freaking way.

Joe Morris? Maybe Stump Mitchell? Possibly Ray Rice? Closer

  4. Cannon Says:

    ^Well played

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

For a short guy Martin’s giant ass matches the rest of his body, the better to deflect tacklers while scampering about. It’s all good.

  6. DB55 Says:

They all tiny guys who hide behind the line. But yea it’s been decades so you’re probably right. Ray Rice and MJD would be closer fits. How about Alfred Morris from the redskins?

  7. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I don’t know, he might want soften his stance on Muscle Hamster. Bubble Butt seems much worse…..

Tiki barbar has taken analytics to a new level. lets hope we don’t see it in
    stat column!

I can think of number of positions where a BA is re4quired. In fact Doug thrived behind a few of them his first year.

  10. Kevin Schmidt Says:

At least if you tag him he still has to play for a contract. See if he can do it another year. With Charles Simms getting better and better and taking a lot of the carrier off of Martin he should stay fresh….but Ive said it a million times it’s all about his work ethic. I’m sure winston is going to get a good read on Martin and let the coaches know what his “Why’s” are.
